Ground is marked for social distancing but not enforced in line, but I did hear them ask a customer to wear their mask until they got to their table, so yay! 1. Food was a bit of a miss here which is why the 3 stars. French toast had good flavor, the guava jelly & whipped cream were flavorful and sweet. But the main part, the toast seemed a bit undercooked, esp the piece on the bottom. It was soggy on one side, maybe they forgot to flip it. I like my toast... toasty; so that was disappointing. 2. The piña colada, the main attraction as to why we came, was also anticlimactic. It came out very watery, when I was expecting a more blended drink. Flavor was decent though, there was definitely rum in there! It is pretty small for $16, but that was expected. 3. Best part of the meal was surprisingly the El Sandwich! Came here during lunch time with a friend. Unfortunately at that time, they were only serving brunch. Nevertheless, their brunch menu looked really good, and I had their guava island tostado. Not sweet at all though there were no seasonal berries like it was advertised. But the toast had a similar texture as a slow-cooked pork, and it melted in my mouth. Ok I love the drinks and ambiance of this place! Their pina colada and michelada (which isn't on the menu) are SO good. However the food is lacking. It looks like it will be really good, but then womp womp. It just needs more flavor. For a South American place it doesn't taste like it. And it's priced pretty high for that lack of flavor. Once is enough for me. Went for happy hour because reviews looked good and I heard their drinks were especially good. First drink I ordered was served warm. Not as in a toddy but a cold drink that was not cold and all the ice had melted. Ordered chips and guacamole. This was $10 and you get about an eighth of a cup of weird cloyingly greasy guacamole. My husband ordered three chicken tacos. I ordered the two chicken taco happy hour special. The server brought out my husband's tacos and then mine never arrived after waiting about 15 minutes we waved the server down to ask about my food. For some reason, this made her pretty upset, and she just kept sneezing at us and asking weird questions about what we ordered and how much like we were lying about it and then she finally went into the kitchen and could be seen through the window having a conference with the kitchen staff and glaring over at us every few minutes after about another 15 minutes a nice man came outside to apologize for the wait and said that our tacos would be ready soon. once they got there they were hot and tasted pretty good but at that point I was already over Tropicale. We ordered a second round this time their signature piña colada's, and those were pretty dang good after having not even been able to finish the first drink. I was delightfully, surprised by the second. My husband wanted to order a third drink so we did but right about the time it came out. I was already starting to feel sick. Yes, that's right folks food poisoning. I had to leave that one basically un-drank because I was already so woozy and kind of belching stomach bile continuously. I can confidently say I will never go back to Tropicale but honestly the worst part is not even my churning gut. It is how terrible that server was. I usually avoid terrible inner Portland hipster joints with $5 tacos solely on principle alone but with this one my experience with the server seemed to mirror what I have read quite a few other reviews to say and that is that the staff are just rude. Dear Tropicale owners I hope you care that people who spend their hard earned money at your restaurant are being made to feel like garbage simply for politely asking where their order is or the poor lady who got screamed at just for asking a question about sour cream. I struggled with how many stars to give this place. I love the setting, and the idea is pretty cool. I went with my friend to have a meal before going for a walk around Mt. Tabor. So many great looking items on the menu. I was in line behind my friend who I arrived with when I was told I needed to back up. I casually mentioned that I was with my friend but the staff member insisted that I back up. Ok. So, I did. The people directly behind me, and I do mean directly behind me, close enough that it was uncomfortable for me barely made any move to give me space. (Since, you know, there is a pandemic going on). This kind of irritated me, as I was asked to move away from my friend, yet these people were very much in my personal space. Oh well, once I got up to the counter to order, the lady that helped me was very nice and quick. She added me to the same table number as my friend, as she could tell we were together, despite me being told to move back. My friend and I sat down at a covered table near one of many outdoor heaters. Two people sat at the table directly behind my friend and decided it would be appropriate for their dog to have free rein of the area. The dog jumped up next to my friend while we were trying to eat and was trying to get some food. The owners barely noticed until my friend told the dog to get down. They didn't even apologize or say anything. Seems like a lot of people who were eating here when we were have their heads up their bums and don't have common courtesy. Kind of salted my experience. So, back to the food. I ordered the tostones and the Cochinita tacos, my friend got tostones and the chilaquiles verde. Both my friend and I really enjoyed the tostones and the dipping sauce that came with them. The Cochinita was a bit too rich for me. The pickles didn't cut thru enough to balance it out. Two tacos was plenty. The salsa was very smokey in flavor. Not too spicy. I wish the tacos would have had something else to help cut the richness of the meat. Even a squeeze of lime wasn't quite enough. It was tasty, but very rich. I would give this place a try again, maybe in the summer time, and hope that the other patrons weren't as rude as this time. read more

I think we made the ideal order to share a pina colada in a pineapple shell & try the Mezcal flight. Neither of us ended up ordering food from the happy hour menu because the prices of the regular menu were very reasonable. We got the camarones tacos & hot bowl. Both delicious! The hot bowl was full of nutrients & protein to keep ya feeling fresh! Service was also spectacular & despite being off of Sandy, the ambiance was chill & there was limited road noise. Tropicale HH is where it's at! Featuring HH from Tuesday-Thursday 3-6pm, they're known for their piña coladas and you can get them in actual pineapples! Come early!! They were packed the entire time we were there, and there's no reservations. They are located in a plaza with other eateries (sushi, vietnamese, pizza) sharing the same eating area. Tropicale is counter service and they give you a number with a QR code after your order, so you're able to order more from your table. (Recommend!! have a person order through the line to get the number card, and have the rest of your party order through the QR code, much faster that way than waiting in the line!!) The drinks were delightful, refreshing, and the perfect cooler on a hot day. The food was great as well! We got chips/guac/salsa for sharing and I ordered their cochinita tacos. Their tacos feature their homemade blue corn tortilla and it complimented the meat so well. Food and drinks are both a hit at Tropicale, you can't go wrong here! This was a breath of fresh air on a cold snowy week in the PNW for us! The margaritas were fresh and tasty, and led the way to us trying three or four more cocktails from their menu. Lots of cool mezcales, and other interesting whiskey and tequila spin offs. We had the pulpo and to stones (or patacones.. how we call them in my hometown of Costa Rica) and neither disappointed. Chips and Gauc and Salsas are a must. We were floored by the fresh chips and the smoky, almost BBQ tasting pineapple salsa. Arepas were almost my favorite dish of the night. The texture is perfect and the flavors are on point. However, it were the SHRIMP TACOS that took the prize. The creamy sauces and succulent shrimp tucked inside the blue corn tortilla was immaculate. Cant say the same for the fish taco. I thought the breading was grainy and inappropriate for the fish, which was sort of dry. I was psyched to try to the Octopus, but unfortunately for me (and fortunately for most of you) it came with chorizo so I couldn't eat it. Next time I'll remember to order it without! The "Hot Bowl" was great too, especially if you love garbanzo beans and kale. Not a must order, but delicious nonetheless! Now, for their crown jewel: the Pina Colada. The QR Code sign on each table asks that you please place your order before seating yourself/your party. Most Tropicale visitors were respectful of this, but you will observe some seat savers. However there is a good amount of seating. Most of the tables can fit up to 6 people comfortably. We tried their pozole, pulpo (octopus), medium piña colada and tropi tropi drink. The pozole was packed full of pork, hominy, and flavor. The pulpo was cooked perfectly and all of the ingredients complimented the octopus so well. The touch of cherry in the piña colada really hit the spot and the tropi tropi drink had refreshing herbal taste. We enjoyed the music, how colorful the bar area was, and the overall vibe. My friend asked for a half strength drink and she loved hers - I got the rest of her rum and enjoyed mine. The pina colada is of course a sweeter drink but they've got other options if that's not your thing. They also have a small food menu and their A game on outdoor seating. There's plenty of heaters in the covered area - plus the drinks should keep you warm in this rainy weather. They're also in a great location, with Friendship Kitchen and 24th Pizza and Meatballs right next door - so you can mix and match food and drinks if not everyone wants the same thing in your group. This was such a fun spot to go to for some after work drinks with my friends. They were definitely slinging some delicious drinks while manning down the fort for a busy crowd. I ordered an off menu item that I saw on their Instagram and it came with a candy straw. The cocktail was so flavorful we finished it within minutes. I will say that I was confused when I first got there and didn't know you were to order then find a seat, but lesson learned fairly quick.
