Once again another fine example of a mainstream restaurant that also insures vegans, (and gluten free) customers are also considered. Not just accommodated but catered too. This beautiful stylish restaurant with a bar, dining area and beautiful patio area has an extensive menu of food, specialty beer and drink options and has a section for vegans with 4 entrees and clearly indicates vegan options on the side/appetizer and dessert areas. What a relief that we don't have to ask the waiter questions that they often find irritating or uncomfortable. We did not have to wait for the waiter to go back and forth to the kitchen to before we could order. All the while wondering if this is going to translate into a better tip or a disaster. More restaurants need to get on board and have clear options and train their staff like Tru BBQ. Our waiter was amazing and friendly. We enjoyed complimentary fresh made chips and pickles while waiting. We dipped them in the 4 homemade BBQ sauces on the table. Very tasty start! We ordered the vegan BBQ "beef" and the vegan pulled "pork like" sandwiches. It sucks that I still have to reference animals when I order my food but for now that is how things are so people can understand what they are ordering. Each came with a side of fries or vegan slaw or other side. I had the slaw and ordered roasted vegetables as a side. The slaw was a little bland, could use some sauce it flavor, the sandwiches both came out on big fluffy buns and were loaded with the BBQ vegan meats. We split them and tried both and they each were distinctly different and tasty and filling! I do not know which I prefer, the "beef" was sliced and a little charred on the edges, the "pork pieces" were tender and tasty. To our surprise there was a vegan dessert option! It was a vegan cheesecake with blueberry sauce and it was HUGE tasty and delicious. Only bummer was they did not have soy or almond milk for coffee. After a delicious meal, everyone enjoys a cup of coffee, even vegans! The live music was wonderful. The food was simply ok. The service left a lot to be desired on my second visit. I asked my server, Lex, if there was a certain drink special and he said yes, so I ordered that drink. When I got my check it was double what I asked about and he said that my drink wasn't on special after all. The unconvincing "oh, sorry" didn't really make up for paying $10 for a drink I was told cost $5. He said it was a misunderstanding but it was his misunderstanding. I shouldn't have to pay for his mistakes. The server we had the first time we came in was engaging, knowledgeable and prompt despite also being the bar tender. Maybe Lex needs some lessons. The food was very tasty and filling. But I neglected to ask my server about low sodium options so I can't speak to that aspect of my dietary experience. One of my friends suggested going to this restaurant after seeing it on Windy City Live and I am so glad I went with her. We went on a Friday for a late lunch about 3:30 p.m. and appetizers were 1/2 off. We ordered the smoke chicken wings, fried pickle slices, corn bread pudding, white cheddar mac and cheese, and the andouille sausage and peppers (spicyyyyy). Everything was so good. They gave complimentary restaurant-made chips and pickle dish w/ red onions. We had 2 drinks and two meals to go (one 1/2 rack of baby back ribs and one St. Louis ribs). Our bill was only $78 ! No, we don't look like whales.. We shared the appetizers and took the entrees home for family. I have since gone back and tried the pork belly slider (LOVED IT) and the beef brisket slider (not so much). I had not tasted the white cheddar mac and cheese before but I LOVE it. As a southern cook, I am really enjoyed this because it is not the way I would normally cook mac and cheese. I think you will be very pleased. read more

Whiskey a Go Go. Ate here with the family and did enjoy it. Good friendly server with a good knowledge of the whiskey, gave me good advice that turned out to be accurate for my flight. All the food was delicious from the adult selection to the children's menu. My son had a whiskey flight also and we shared. The portions on the flight are small so if you find something you like you might want to order a standard shot. Give them a try. read more

The fours stars are all for Jaime, our server! Our group came in, weary from a stressful shift at the hospital and she was incredibly attentive and kind. We will return in the future due to Jaime. Our drink/food orders were served promptly and she check on us frequently. Wish there were drink specials, as a martini is $11.00 and craft beer $7.00. Service was very good but the rib special was disappointing- boiled ribs that were thrown on the grill only briefly and lacked flavor---In fact they reminded me of the bland boiled meat my Dutch grandma would make. The beer flight was warm so our server was nice to bring us a few more. She was super and very attentive. The Mac and cheese pork belly lacked pork but by this point we weren't in the mood to complain again... And those were tasty even lacking pork but overpriced at $8 for 3. The staff here is amazing as soon as I walked in, i felt welcomed. I came here for the vegan menu and was excited to try the jackfruit sandwich. We took the family here based on the reviews. This place thinks a lot more of itself than it should. The food was just okay. It's nothing special and it's way overpriced. Our sandwiches had decent flavor, but nothing that wowed us. The buns on the pulled pork and chicken sandwiches were a bit soggy. Our waiter was nice, but was almost irritating in his insistence that we have dessert. There was no way we would have dessert there. The bill was already close to $90 and none of us had anything to drink other than water! I feel like this is a BBQ place with an identity crisis. Do you want to be a fancy whiskey bar, or do you want to serve BBQ? Pick ONE because having upscale ambiance with average food is not what will keep people coming back over time. read more

The whole family went tonight and EVERYONE was beyond pleased. We ordered three appetizers, (steak fries with shredded pork and cheese, fried green tomatoes which were cooked perfectly and had an excellent crunch, andouille sausage with potatoes and peppers). Their beers were cold and many employees came to our table asking if everything was alright. The brisket was amazing and tender, my three-year-old got the "child sized" portion of white cheddar mac n cheese, it was in a large serving dish and had wonderful flavor and texture. My daughter had an enormous sized smoked turkey sandwich that she couldn't finish and my son had the same mac n cheese but his had pulled pork mixed in. So my boyfriend and I went to True for an early dinner... mind you we've been here before together and I had went a couple times before ( one time on my birthday-so yes I "thought" it was a really good place to eat and I can honestly say it was on of my favorites) -BUT today was definitely not a good experience and wasn't what we both were expecting. My boyfriend started off with ordering a bowl of tortilla soup. When it finally came it looked and tasted more like chicken soup no tortillas in and a bunch of carrots. We both ordered the fried chicken sandwich which came with coleslaw and fries. I ordered an extra side of macaroni and cheese. When our food came the sandwiches were tiny and my macaroni and cheese was super cold. The waitress was nice enough to take it back and bring me another one. At that time the manager was making his way and greeting customers table to table. He stopped at ours ( because he heard we sent something back) and my boyfriend told him the issues. He was nice enough to offer to make another sandwich but only to my boyfriend and he apologized for the cold Mac and cheese and the horrible tortilla soup. He did accommodate us by taking off one of the chicken sandwiches and offered us take home dessert. I seriously doubt I will ever go back and I'm telling all my people about my experience!
