I reserve TFK for every-once-in-a-while indulgences and treats due to the priciness of this place. This evening, party of 2, everything I love about the TFK experience was realized EXCEPT my disappointment with the seasonal Grilled Grass-fed Steak entree I ordered. This steak entree, one of the priciest items on the menu, did not live up to my (high) expectations of TFK's other steak entrees I've had in the past. :( Bottom line, the steak was nbd. Ho hum. No marinade or flavor to it. Basically just a grilled steak though it was grilled medium rare to my liking. I did like the taste and texture of the black rice but the grilled veggies that accompanied the steak were ho-hum as well. While the entree came out hot, some of the veggies were room temp. Sadly, I do not recommend this dish. Hence, for this visit at least, a ONE STAR DING. I will say the other dishes we ordered were delicious. I had a taste of my friend's SPICY PANANG CURRY BOWL and it was delicious - definitely would order this next time. The curry sauce was thick, flavorful and creamy and the veg medley and brown rice were bright, fresh and a great flavor mix. We ordered 2 starters - the hummus and the roasted cauliflower. Both were delicious though I liked the cauliflower more than the hummus. FYI, we requested GLUTEN FREE PITA to go with the hummus, not knowing if they could accommodate the request - but they did! Our server that night was excellent and service was as I've always experienced spot on! I absolutely love the fact that the staff doesn't rush your meal nor rush you out the door - we arrived around 730PM (on a Wed night) and they allowed us to linger after they closed their doors at 9PM. Nice touch. I love love LOVE this TKF locations's decor and ambience. So open, bright, clean, comfortable. I love the open kitchen concept and the bar area is looooong and inviting. Table seating is nicely and generously spaced out so you don't feel like you're on top of the party next to you, overhearing each others' conversation (one of my pet peeves!). True Food - I'll continue to remain true to you but have to let you and everyone know when a dish isn't up to the standards I hold for you (and you wouldn't want it any other way wink). My first time here and I must say I absolutely loved it. From the atmosphere to the staff, everything was a win for me. I sat outside and a woman on the street stopped and asked what I ordered because it looked so delicious & it was! I got the Grass-fed Burger with a 50/50 mix of kale salad and sweet potato hash (the has was my favorite but the kale salad was nicely done also). I also ordered a green juice which was fresh and had lots of awesome ginger to give it a spicy kick. My very sweet server brought my dessert out with a candle in it and made me feel very special. I hope they don't take the strawberry cake off the menu because it was SO good, moist and not too sweet. I will definitely return again & look for these in California! Great options that are healthy and delicious! We came on a weeknight so it wasn't super busy, we were seated right away. We started with the edamame dumplings and hummus. Both really good and flavorful! The pita chips were unlimited which was nice. For entree I got the margarita pizza. It wasn't anything special but not bad either. I also got the matcha horchata latte which was so so good! It was the perfect balance of sweet. Overall a good experience and we had great service. read more

Ok, I admit it: I had dinner two nights in a row at True Food Kitchen. It's that good. First night I had the Ancient Grains Bowl with chicken. So delicious. Loved the grains, the veggies and avocado; the chicken was juicy and perfectly seasoned. I splurged and also had dessert (ice cream and cookies) -- it was good but not very sweet so if dessert is your thing (and I do like my sweets!), I would go elsewhere for dessert so you can truly indulge. But the entree was so good! Second night I had the Chopped Salad with steak. Another winner! I literally ate every single bite. Loved the dressing and the mix of veggies, fruit and cheese (manchego, my favorite!). I had the peach tea which was refreshing. Nice bright decor and wide open spaces inside. Plenty of parking. A go to for health dinning, True Food offers a fantastic menu with many seasonal items and great tasting food. The most impressive thing about True Food is the speed that the food and drinks come out (about 10 minutes for starters and 15-25 minutes for the main meals). For drinks we got the Rising Sun and Pool Party craft cocktails. Both of these drinks had an excellent flavor and presentation. For food we got the Edamame Guacamole. This is my go to starter, if you only order one thing at this restaurant I suggest you get the Edamame Guacamole. For the main course we got the Grilled Chicken & Mozzarella Panini and the Chicken Sausage pizza. The Grilled Chicken & Mozzarella Panini was great, it had a wonderful chicken parmesan taste due to the grilled chicken, tomato sauce and mozzarella. The Chicken Sausage pizza was also great, it had a thin but crispy crust which made it light yet still satisfying. The restaurant is also fantastic with allergies. They do not use peanuts in the facility at all and the manager comes out with your meal when you have an allergy to certify that it does not contain your allergens. The location is quite large with both indoor and outdoor seating. The tables are spaced nicely apart which was fantastic as it allows for you to dine without being in another table's space. The staff at True Food are also very kind and do a great job. The hosts were welcoming and quick to seat my party. The wait staff was also very attentive. Even though True Food offers contactless ordering and payment (using a QR code on the table), the wait staff still came by periodically to check-in and see if everything was going alright. Overall, True Food is a great spot for a healthy bite especially for those who have allergies. The only draw back is that it can get expensive. read more

Came here because I wanted to eat out and have a good time with a friend of mine, without feeling the added guilt of eating unhealthy. For that, True Food did great. My friend got the Panang Curry and loved it so much she got an extra order to go. I got one shrimp and one steak taco with the rest of the sides that come with it. Friendly tip for the staff: a second taco shell is helpful in case the first one breaks apart since it's too soggy, but overall, the taco was still there, and like I said, I left not feeling guilty, which was my favorite part (especially because my friend and I shared a flourless chocolate cake). Service was quick and friendly. You have the option to order solely off of the QR codes but you don't have to. The ambiance is right on theme and restaurant looks much bigger than the one in Mosaic as well. I wouldn't necessarily run to True Food on a hunch or craving. It's not really authentic nor is it mind blowing, but that's not what this place is about anyways. True Food made up for this with its friendly staff and a meal that left me feeling like I had just enough and not too much. Will note though that it does get a bit pricey, so if you're not really trying to eat healthy, I'd probably look into other options (but that may be my own bias, my friends rave about their lasagna, so take it if you'd like). TLDR; If we were rating based on food, I'd probably give it a 3.5 (not because it was bad, but because it was just okay), but I bumped it to 4 based on my overall experience. read more

We waited awhile to give this True Food Kitchen a try, especially when the early reviews weren't the greatest. In time, that changed for the better as they worked out the kinks. Not sure if they would be busy or not, we made a reservation on a Saturday night around 5:30 p.m. When we got there, it was clear that no reservation was needed as the place only had a few customers at the time. We found all the staff to be friendly and helpful. For drinks, I got a passion fruit limeade and my husband got apple lemonade. I liked my limeade as it had good flavor with the lime predominating plus it was sweetened but not overly so. My husband wasn't crazy about his apple lemonade but he did drink it all. He said next time he would try something else. For my entree, I chose the grilled chicken sandwich. This sandwich consists of: "organic DiNapoli tomato sauce, broccolini, mozzarella, herbs, and chili flake". Along with the chicken, the ingredients are stuffed into their "crispy house made pita". Plus, there is a choice of a side. The two sides being offered were kale or sweet potato hash. I chose the hash. This sandwich, as my husband who ate part of it said, has a lot going on in it when it comes to ingredients. While everything worked well together, I saw his point. Plus, the "chili flake" came close to overpowering all the other ingredients. As for the sweet potato hash --- it was surprisingly quite good! The sweet potato was cubed and small pieces of onion were in the hash which, much to my surprise worked quite well together. In fact, I liked it so much that I didn't have enough room to finish the entire sandwich. I was also motivated to fill up on it due to my doctor telling me that I needed more potassium in my diet---and sweet potatoes are rich in potassium. My husband ordered "grilled sustainable salmon" which consists of: "farro, quinoa, seasonal vegetables, cilantro pumpkin pesto". He said the salmon was perfectly cooked as it was moist and it was well seasoned. While he isn't a fan of quinoa, he said he liked the way it was prepared with the farro. As for the "seasonal" veggies, the portion was very stingy--- one thin slice of sweet potato, plus a few tiny pieces of green beans. Since this entree is rather light and I was getting full, he ate part of my sandwich. If I had to ding them on something it's this --- I wish that there were more items on their menu. Last time we ate at a True Food Kitchen was about 6 years ago when we went to the one in the Mosaic district. I remember there was a far greater variety to choose from on the menu. Not sure why that is these days. Since it's not far from us, we will go back again. I'm interested to see what seasonal menu items will appear as the seasons change. read more

I am staying at the Hyatt across the street, and was looking for something other than junk food for dinner. A quick run through of the online menu, and this place sounded good. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. When I walked in, I was surprised to find nobody at the hostess stand. It's a Sunday night, shortly before 7pm, and they didn't seem overly busy. There were plenty of open tables. After waiting for a few minutes, the hostess came back around and showed me to my seat. It was kind of downhill from there. After sitting down, she took away the extra place settings and I started to glance at the menu again. I was reasonably sure I knew what I wanted (original chicken sandwich), but I still perused it just incase. After 5 minutes or so, I closed the menu and waited, intermittently looking between my phone and the preseason football game on the tv in the center of the restaurant. And so I waited. And waited. After the better part of 10 minutes, the hostess walked back past me and asked if I'd been helped yet. I told her no. Another three to four minutes passed, and my waitress came by. She asked if I wanted anything to drink, and I said I was ready to order. So I asked for the sandwich, a side salad, and water. It all seemed easy enough. The waitress (who was quite nice) headed off to deliver the order, and I was back into my phone and/or the football game. Another 5-10 minutes passed, and the hostess came by again. She asked if I wanted any water. Finally! Yes, please. I was brought a glass of water, which I thought I drank somewhat slowly, but before I knew it, the glass was empty, and nobody was in sight to ask if I wanted a refill. Then the real waiting began. It took about 30 minutes before the waitress came back and apologized for the inconvenience. She said she would go check on my burger (I ordered chicken), and get me another glass of water. Roughly 10 minutes after that, I saw her returning with a plate in one hand and a glass of water in the other. As she handed the food to me, she apologized again and said they had lost my ticket. I have no idea how that happens, or where they apparently found it in order to get my order correct (?). It all just seemed so odd. At this point, I was rather hungry and tore through the salad. It was quite good. The chicken sandwich was underwhelming. The two pieces on chicken in it were small, and the temperature wasn't very warm, suggesting that it had been prepared some time ago and ... just not brought to me? Nevertheless, I was still hungry and ate it in short order. I emptied the glass of water, and went back to waiting. About 3-4 minutes later the waitress returned, apologized for the wait, and offered a free dessert. I didn't want any dessert though, I just wanted to pay and get back to the Hyatt. In lieu of the dessert, they took 10% off my bill. I had not commented or complained the whole time, so I suppose it was nice that they voluntarily offered a discount. I still tipped 15%, but I'm not sure why. That said though, the entire ordeal felt like such a disorganized mess. Even the most basic thing of bringing a glass of water to the table (or checking to see if I wanted more, since my glass was empty for so long) seemed like a Herculean effort. I can't imagine what happens in there on a night when they are fully busy. Although the staff I dealt with were all very pleasant and nice, I still felt like I was completely forgotten about, despite being right in the middle of the seating area. And based on that experience, I can't foresee myself coming back again. read more

Stopped by Reston Town Center to walk around with the family + our dog and heard a lot of good things about True Food, so we decided to eat here. It's located at the end of the main area where they have the ice rink on the right side. We ordered the hummus and pita bread as a starter and shared an O.G. Burger with sweet potatoes. I was actually surprised at how delicious the sauce in the burger was! Every bite was juicy, flavorful, delicious! 10/10 will order this burger again. I honestly wish I knew the recipe for the mushroom sauce because it had such a good umami taste. Service was good and they brought out a water bowl for my dog too! read more

I am a now a fan. My work colleague talked about True highly and said that she needed to take me to this restaurant. True has such great food. I had the Lasagna Bolognese and I did not feel stuffed. My colleagues had the Ancient Grain Bowl and the Spicy Panang Curry Bowl. It was great to see that some of the menu items were seasonal. I found room for desert, the Blueberry Crumble Sundae. One of my colleagues got the Flourless Chocolate Cake. The wait staff was attentive and the food came out quickly. The decor was hip but calming. I highly recommend True. Also, it was not too expensive. My bill came out to about $37 including tip. read more

After an exhilarating Zumba workout, True Food Kitchen was a fantastic choice for some nourishment. I've been to the Mosaic location, but this was my first time at the Reston location. I appreciated that they had many outdoor seating tables available. After we sat down, we were told to scan the QR code for the menu. The neat thing was you can also order straight from there for faster service. It was very simple and our food came out quickly. Afterwards, you can also pay straight from the same site. It made everything super convenient and minimized contact. My fav here are the edamame dumplings. Always have to get that and decided to try some of their new seasonal dishes. I've heard good things about True Food Kitchen locations and needed a spot for gluten free options, so we decided to come here. While I am sure their other menu items could be good, the three items we ordered were absolutely horrendous and we will absolutely not be returning. Food: True Crisp'd Buffalo Tenders - Not sure why the word "crisp" is in the name; these are 3.5 pieces of dry unbreaded chicken doused with a generic spicy sauce. It came with "hatch green chili ranch" that was absolutely tasteless and a couple pieces of celery and rainbow carrots. Absolutely ridicious to charge $12 for these. I dare you to compare what you get versus the picture on the website. Wild-Caught Tuna Poke Bowl - For $25 you can go over to the poke spot in RTC and get one absolutely loaded bowl, or two small bowls. Or you can get this here, what could have passed as vomit covered kitchen scraps. The first thing you'll noticed is the laughably small portion size - about 1/3 the size of the Panang Curry bowl. "Avocado" is mentioned on the menu entry but all I had was a smear of green avocado sauce of sorts. You get maybe a couple ounces of fish here, tasteless and gummy. The worst part of all this was there was something extremely bitter, so bitter I had to spit out a mouthful - I believe it was some of the herbs in here that might be well past its prime. I left this half eaten and it was not taken home (I was not offered a box, even if I had wanted to take it home). Spicy Panang Curry Bowl - The word spicy there was a mere suggestion. The vegetables in it were fine, but the DRY chicken option we added was not worth the $6 upcharge. This was left a quarter eaten and not taken home. Service: Our server was fine, although he did not ask if we wanted boxes even though most of our food was left uneaten. Someone who I believe was the manager stopped by during the meal and asked us how the food was. We asked for an ingredient list of the poke bowl so we could determine what was so bitter and disgusting inside the bowl; they instead ended up bringing me a container of a sauce which I believe he wanted me to try on the bowl. I tried to stress again that there was something wrong with the bowl and that they should spot check some of the ingredients for which the manager thanked us for that suggestion. I specifically told them that I did not bring this up to get the bowl taken off my bill. Ambiance: Place is clean, generic, nothing to write home about. It was relatively empty aside from a party that was being hosted in the far wing of the restaurant. It was strange they sat us so close to this area when there were empty tables all over, further from the hustle and bustle of that area. Final thoughts: I want to stress this review is my personal opinion and is not in response to the fact that they didn't take the poke bowl off the bill; I specficially told them not to (although that wasn't offered as a goodwill gesture in the first place). I think the food here, at least the items we ordered, were terribly priced, absolutely dreadful, and there are significantly better options in the area, or even just RTC in general. read more

So glad True Food Kitchen is here. This location is closer to us. In Reston Town Center, the Blue Garage is the closest to the restaurant. Parking is free on weekends. Placed an order online which was simple and straightforward. Our order was ready when we arrived and neatly wrapped. Employees are friendly. The restaurant is spacious, neat, and organized. Their Edamame Dumplings were delicious! Delicate dumpling skin, smooth creamy edamame filling, with a lovely white truffle oil flavor. The Herb Hummus is very flavorful. Served with house-made pita. So addicting! Everything we tried was seasoned well, fresh, and made with quality ingredients. I'm so glad we got a chance to try this place out. He was kind enough but he needs to learn to be more attentive like coffee refills, special requests, etc. some issues... when you ask for a carafe of mimosas you do not expect a bottle and two small carafes of OJ for $44....the meals were southwest tofu, blueberry pancakes and Big Egg Breakfast. So refreshing to find a health conscious restaurant that has delicious food, drinks and fantastic service!! Honestly, my first meal here was perfect and there are ZERO complaints! The place is bright and clean with a large open indoor dining space with a visibly clean kitchen. They have outdoor seating and we took advantage of having dinner on this gorgeous night. Jess was our server and she was exceptionally friendly, provided a lot of great suggestions and answers about the menu. They have a lot of options on their menu including vegetarian and vegan options. They try to locally source a lot of their ingredients. Their hummus was absolutely delicious as was my chicken sausage pizza and my husband's shrimp tacos. The zucchini salsa verde on on his plate was so yummy as was the cauliflower mash. They have unique and delicious cocktails that are low calorie. I drank their green tea with some simple syrup which was great. The best is their chocolate flourless cake!!! Real chocolate that was rich and decadent without being overly sweet like a lot of places. I have issues with healthier dishes because they're often dry and flavorless but this was great and not overseasoned. Jess made sure our drinks were refilled and checked on us the proper amount of times and brought us our check quickly! We didn't have to wait half an hour for someone to come back to us after dessert. We will definitely come back and think you should try it! Disappointing Experience with Food Poisoning to Top It Off I had high hopes for TFK RTC, but my recent lunch there was a complete disaster from start to finish. The service was slow and disorganized--our orders were mixed up, parts of the meal were missing, and what did arrive wasn't worth the wait. The food itself was underwhelming. I ordered a veggie wrap and a small salad, expecting something fresh and flavorful, but instead, I got a sad, uninspired wrap with limp vegetables and a tiny, unseasoned salad that looked like an afterthought. To make matters worse, I ended up with food poisoning after eating it. Between the poor service, mediocre food, and the fact that it literally made me sick, I can't recommend this place. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area that actually deliver on quality and service--this isn't one of them. read more

May 2021 - COVID Review: I was invited to their VIP grand opening event and it was very timely because I had never gotten a chance to try their other NoVA location in Mosaic yet either! Our server was Aleyah and she was so great! It was nice to know that she understood my husband's food allergies because she was also allergic to the same things (all nuts). So it was helpful that she was able to tell us which items on the menu were "safe" to eat and/or could have the nuts substituted out. We started with a couple of cocktails and an appetizer. Our entrees were delicious! I highly recommend the salmon dish - I loved that it came with a nut-free pesto sauce that was made out of cilantro and pumpkin seeds! TFK is a great place to go if you have food allergies, dietary restrictions, or simply want to eat some healthier dishes! The inside is beautiful and there's even a separate/private dining room for special events.
