We heard good things about Truffles, but it did not live up to the hype. Service is so slow. It was an hour before we got our food. We think it's because they hope that you keep drinking to run up the bill. I ordered the duck and it was so salty I thought my face would pucker. It came with a compote of sorts that had 10 different indistinguishable round and cubed things some which where rock hard. I also ordered a stright up martini which was super watery. When I asked the bartender if he could make the second one less diluted, he kinda fronded at me and made the second on exactly like the first. Came here in Indiana with a group of 6 of us. We had a reservation and were seated pretty easily. The ambience is kind of weird as it doesn't feel like this place should belong in Indiana. The service is also very very slow and rude. We had the Caesar salad which was fine, how could you mess that up. The calamari was SUPER salty and so was the burger, it was also overcooked and lacking flavor. Other than salt. Wouldn't recommend. Overall very mediocre to bad experience. Worst experience ever. Made a reservation for two for Valentine's Day dinner, after being sat at a four seater table we asked to sit on the same side and were told "you can move it yourself". That usually wouldn't be an issue but for a $200 prefix dinner at a "fine cuisine" restaurant, kind of ridiculous, but ok. It just got worse from there. It was a four course menu, first ordered French onion soup - where's the croutons and cheese? I got onion broth with four croutons and a sprinkle of cheese, wasn't aware of the shrinkflation onion soup is receiving. Sadly, the shrimp cocktail was the highlight of my meal... the only effort was the plating. Steak was alright, but served with plain boiled broccoli. They didn't even put in the effort to grill it, or add a spice? And let me say this restaurant was NOT PACKED, I've worked in the service industry multiple years and if they can't even handle full tables with no wait, the customers aren't the issue. Dessert was fine. Server didn't come over once to ask how the meal was, if we were doing ok. The silverware had crusty residue on it. Overall terrible experience. SO I have been looking forward to eating at this restaurant literally for months. My husband is a culinary student at the Culinary Institute of America in San Antonio Texas. He hand-picked this place to do his culinary externship and unfortunately my military career took me overseas for six months so Christmas time is my first chance to finally try out the restaurant I have heard so much about. The girl I sat next to on the plane on my way to Indiana was telling me how her and her girlfriends love all the food here. Her favorite is the calamari. I tried it. Crunchy & fresh. Atmosphere = 4.5 Warm, inviting even during COVID19 & socially distanced & spaced well. They have some outdoor tables on warmer days. My favorite thing was I watched the bartender clean up tables in between customers and she was *very thorough in sanitizing the areas.* Staff= 5 I was meaning other stuff for the first time although I had heard good things about them previously. They were very professional, friendly and accommodating. The executive chef (Bob) and owner, Mark, were doing the rounds to check on the food quality and make sure everyone was having a nice time. FOOD = my experience was 5+ The house salad was balanced with crunch, goat cheese, fruit, & acid. Shrimp cocktail was huge & ALMOST as good as St Elmos (I get extra horseradish & lemons.) Saving best for last, the Salmon entree was unbelievably affordable for the BEST salmon I've ever eaten in a restaurant. I lived in Hawaii for three years so fresh salmon poke still takes the cake but this was second-best. Expertly cooked by Chef Bob; sear was on point. Sides were savory and complimented the entrée nicely but didn't take away from the star of the dish, fresh Salmon! Nom nom. I recommend A glass of one of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc's to complement the salmon. The couple next to me had a couple of Wagyu burgers and some unbelievably delicious fancy dessert. We went here on Sunday night for dinner after reading some reviews that this place was good! We had reservations for 6:30 PM and were able to push them back an hour to 7:30 PM without any problem. We walked in at 7:30 PM and were immediately sat. I think that the staff may still be learning as there was a bit of confusion on who was serving us and finally the man who sat us went ahead and took care of us - other than that, that was the only service hiccup! We started with the Warm Pine-Nut Crusted Goat Cheese which was absolutely phenomenal! I had never had something so full of flavor with each flavor complimenting the other and not one overpowering the other. I ordered the Sunday Special which was Duck that came with spinach and mouth-watering potatoes. The duck was amazing - and I love duck a lot. The potatoes were phenomenal - I think they were sauteed with bacon, then smashed a bit, and then broiled to create a perfect crunch. The spinach was good as well when dipped in some sort of sauce that it came with - it was a bit sweet and savory. Matt got the Cavatappi Pasta - this was good and was even better after we got some fresh grated parmesan and salt on it! If you ever go to Bloomington, make a stop here. Truffles is the only fine-dining that I have seen up to date in Bloomington. While the exterior of the building may trick you, the interior is completely different. This is a fine dining restaurant located next to Kroger. It has a full bar and a nice air to it. When dining, make sure to ask for Emily. As of now, I have dined 2 times, with both of the times her being my waitress. She is very friendly and attentive she is able to help you choose between dishes and also recommend dishes too. She has helped me choose what cocktail and entree I order each time. My first visit I had a beef pasta as pictured. It was very good and filling. Unlike other white sauces, this sauce has a really good and stronger taste to it. I enjoyed the portion size of the dish as well. There was more meat under all of the noodles in the picture, even more meat than there was pasta. On my second visit, Emily helped me choose the Grilled, 5oz Petite Fillet of Beef as my entree and recommended the Pomegranate Martini to me to drink. The Martini was very good and very strong. I could feel it kicking it not even half way lol. The Fillet of Beef was superb. It was a very very fine cut of meet that almost melted in my mouth. I always assumed this place was closed for business until a friend told me they're actually open for business. I decided to give this place a try. First, the service was pretty average to poor. First, we arrived at 4:30pm for our reservation. We were immediately met with neglect for arriving during their staff meeting. We were reminded of this fact on three separate occasions. I couldn't tell if they were upset that we arrived during this staff meeting or if they were trying to give us justification for their slow service. Either way, I would recommend not opening your establishment until you're ready to accept customers. If your business hours state open at 4:30pm, I expect service at 4:30pm. We were greeted by our server. She never gave us her name. Guess she was too busy focused on the staff meeting. We ordered the soup specials for the day. Both were quite tasty (sorry I can't remember their names). We decided to order the calamari because the reviews said they were tasty. Verdict: I would pass on ordering them unless you have a Midwest palate. We wrapped up the evening with duck breast and wahoo fish. Both dishes were very impressive. If it wasn't for the service I would probably visit this establishment again. What's interesting is that my friend knows the owner quite well and sends lots of business their way. This place is so special! I really hope they make it. It's amazing how long they've been open considering I thought they were closed the first several years I lived here because their blinds are always closed. But you just have to believe they're open. Because they are and it is so worth it. They have a huge fully stocked bar to the left when you walk. Usually it's filled with 40+ year olds dressed pretty fancy, though there's no official dress code. Prices for drinks and food are high but it's one of those you get what you pay for type places. It's worth every penny for that fancy date, congratulatory dinner, or what have you. Despite that, it's also a kid friendly place. There aren't many kids that go, but they do have high chairs and I once took my 4 year old here on a family date shortly before her little sister was born and the servers all fawned over her. So if you can prevent your child from running around this is a very special family date spot. Otherwise I'd keep it a couple's date spot, which is what we usually do. They have excellent everything from homemade dinner rolls & butter to salads, Amish roast chicken, different kinds of fish, and so on. They rotate their menu regularly and are great about suggesting pairings if you ask/show an interest. Their steak and burgers are incredible. They also do a very nice charcuterie board. Lastly - save room for dessert. They seem to always have some sort of beignet stuffed with something or other (it changes seasonally). Please do yourself a favor and order this with some espresso or an americano (or even a decaf coffee if you're heavily pregnant like I was the last time I visited). It is so so so delish. Their chocolate things are dark and rich. Too rich for me and I love dark chocolate. But those beignets - man oh man are they good. During the corona era you can check their Facebook page to find out their daily menu. They're doing delivery and have a pretty wide radius, and I'm sure they're doing curbside too. Truffles bills itself as fine dining, "modern elegance with a twist." Let me tell you about the "twist." The menu is limited and the prices for a strip mall and Kroger adjacent restaurant -- neither modern nor elegant -- reach NYC levels with $50 entrees. The waitress was rude from the moment we sat down, having crammed us into a table too small for our party of 10. The service was slow, from drinks to appetizers, and the entrees took an hour to arrive. The food, each plate slammed down on the table by the waitress, cold and mediocre, at best. The only thing that was fast, the speed in which the waitress started cleaning the table before we all finished our meal. The owner you ask, ruder than the waitress. Not once did anyone come by our table to explain or apologize for the slow service. Asking why your food is delayed is a non-starter. Apparently, according to the owner while screaming at our table, we were to blame...it was the size of our party and waiting an hour for our entree was reasonable. Went there on a Saturday night at what is usually a busy time and was surprised by how empty the restaurant was; maybe 3-4 tables being used in total. Also for being connected to a bar I couldn't believe it, but they were out of Coke/Pepsi. This was a big let down as it's usually a basic drink to have and was my preferred drink that night. Water for me then. We ordered starters, a main and desert and while the food was pleasant and enjoyable, the timing of the plates made for a sporadic experience. The starter took very long to come out which meant most of our time there was left with us actually waiting. Worse was the creamer -- again this is supposed to be a quality dining locale -- disgusting! The creamer was in one of those individual servings pods, rather than ANYTHING in a mini pitcher with white liquid (half/half, imitations of cream....) and was WAY past expiration date: when we poured it into our coffee, it dissolved into these floaters that would be pretty glitter were it not in my coffee! An unusually quiet Saturday evening (late July), we were told. Had reservations - party of 6. We were put in a back room. Appreciated the privacy. I had whiskey cocktail (Jack & Diet Coke), end it tasted good. One friend had the Sweet Tart martini, and she really liked it. Another friend ordered a Cosmopolitan. Truffles did it again, my family has been coming here for years. They have been fantastic through the COVID times. I'm writing this review on St Pattys day. This was some of the best corned beef I've had in a long time. I don't usually enjoy the fatty parts but this was all perfect. Their sauces are amazing. They always seem to have a great saltiness to their dishes, you can always add if you want more. But I appreciate that they don't overdue it to begin with. I think what most folks have said captures this restaurant well. The atmosphere is nice and the menu LOOKS great, but the food quality is not on-par with the prices you pay. Overall everything we had was mediocre to alright... but the prices are that of a much better restaurant. On this particular evening, the restaurant had run out of the wine we ordered and two of the entrees we were hoping to get. I had the chef's seafood special - a monkfish over razor clams and vegetables in a white wine sauce - which didn't taste like much of anything. I mentioned to the waitress that it was bland, to which she responded, "I'm glad you liked it." At $28 for the plate, I think I could do much better. We had the baked goat cheese and pine nut appetizer over basil oil, which was pretty good but a bit salty. Others at the table had the duck - cooked improperly and very fatty, with a side of cranberry "dressing" that was pretty good. A friend had the chef's pasta of the day which was actually the best thing on the table - fettucine with a generous portion of beef. So we walked in pretty around 9 on a Saturday and it was pretty empty. This always gives me pause. We ordered a couple glasses of champagne which were reasonably priced and the oysters. I can't remember the name of them but they were amazing. I don't usually think of Bloomington when I think of seafood but they must have an amazing supplier. We chose the local greens salad and it was delicious the candied pistachios were a revelation. The wine list was pretty decent, mostly current vintages and all the regions and varietals you'd expect with one glaring exception. I asked the server about it because it was so different and so much older than the others. She said she didn't know but would ask the manager. She came out with our bottle, one that was from a better vineyard that was current vintage that was a little bit less money, and then one from a much better vineyard that was from an older vintage that was a little bit more. We went with that one, even though we were unfamiliar with the producer, and it was one of my top five wines of last year. We had the duck and it was great and then the dessert with homemade ice cream and empanadas. Lets just say that the dessert was well worth the price of the whole meal. My parents wanted to treat me to a nice dinner to celebrate the end of the school year. We placed an order for a 3-course dinner over the phone (which had a set menu with a few options for each course), and the call and pickup seemed to go relatively smoothly, besides some issues with cell service. However, once we got home and opened the boxes, the food was not what we thought we had ordered. We called them to inform them of this discrepancy, and they were condescending and repeatedly blamed us for the miscommunication. My parents do have accents, and frankly, I have to wonder if they would've been treated the same way if they sounded white over the phone. My father had printed out the menu around noon today (which was clearly labeled with today's date) and was referencing that during the call, but it seems as though Truffles had updated the menu online sometime afterwards. We were not told about this menu update from today either during the order or during our later call. It would've been simple to inform us about this change instead of making random substitutions in our order and then patronizing us about our communication skills. My parents had loved going to Truffles in the past, but I know that I will not be joining them if they ever decide to go again. Until recently I had only experienced Truffles once and after a great experience a few weeks ago, have gone back to every week for the last month. The first time I went for a drink at the bar and the bartender, Jamie, made excellent mixed drinks and their liquor and wine list are out of this world. In my return trips to Truffles since I've come on 2 occasions for a wine and champagne tasting they offered as well as one evening for dinner. The wine tastings they do are unlike anything any restaurant in Bloomington has to offer and they bring in a great variety of value products as well as higher end items you may not otherwise try on a regular basis. The tastings also offered appetizers with the tasting fees which were great treats to enjoy with our tastings. In our most recent experience the day after Thanksgiving we shared the small plate of the day which was a well cooked and flavorful brisket on top of a bed of perfectly sauteed kale, a Cobb Salad which the kitchen graciously offered to split into 2 for us and including incredibly fresh ingredients combined for a great taste, and a potato and leek soup of the day which was phenomenal and unique to any potato and leek soup we've experienced. The warm, fresh roll that is served with a homemade herbed butter to begin your meal is also incredible. We ended our dinner with a chocolate truffle cake which was incredibly decadent and perfect to split for 2. Truffles recently brought in a new Executive Chef who I believe has done wonderful things for the restaurant bringing in unique, fresh ideas and offers great daily food specials. The staff is incredibly friendly and the owner, Mark, loves to mingle with guests and really get to know people. The people that dine or socialize in the bar area really help make for a great experience at the restaurant! I want to preface this by saying I used to work in restaurants, and so I hardly ever write negative reviews unless I had a truly bad experience. Unfortunately, this is one of those instances. I came here with my parents tonight, and we were sat in a booth that had something sticky all over one of the seats. We asked for a wet rag to clean it off, and they brought one right away. But then they disappeared. In his section, our server had a 9 top come in right after us and a table that had just paid but was finishing their drinks. We watched him wait on both of these tables hand and foot for 20 minutes before he finally came back to take our order. So we're all pretty annoyed at this point. I ordered their seafood special which was shrimp cocktail and jumbo crab claws. My dad got the filet, and my mom got the mahi mahi. Fast forward to an hour after we arrived. Still no food. Our server came over and gave a half hearted, barely audible apology. All the while he is doting on this 9 top, visiting their table maybe three or four times. I had to ask another server for more water because he was so oblivious to us. Our food probably came 10 minutes later. When I saw my entree, I was not impressed. Three shrimp and maybe 2 ounces of crab meat after all the shells. For a $39 entree, I expect to at least leave the restaurant full. Also during this time, we saw the manager schmoozing with the table behind us and the 9 top in front of us, never stopping to even acknowledge we existed. No "sorry for the wait" or "how was everything?" Nothing. Not even a friendly nod. At this point dessert is the only thing that can save this meal. I got the chocolate plum beignets; my parents got the flourless chocolate cake. On no planet were what I got considered beignets. They were undercooked and gooey on the inside and covered in about an inch of granular (not powdered!) sugar. At this point we just wanted to leave. As soon as our server came back we asked for our check. As we watched our server run food to the 9 top four separate times, all the while never saying "I'll be right back," we became livid and went to the host stand to pay.
