    Chicken w. Bok Choy

Didn't have high expectations for Truly Sichuan, but this restaurant's mix of Sichuan and Chinese food was surprisingly decent. We strolled in on a beautiful Friday evening at 5:45 and the restaurant was fairly empty as you can imagine before 6pm, but, once again, to my surprise it got quite busy by the time we left. I didn't expect this restaurant to be extremely popular in Ridgewood, but the fact that their menu serves Americanized Chinese food was a smart move because I felt a majority of the customers were ordering EXACTLY THAT. WE, on the other hand, tried to steer clear of the Americanized Chinese food and tried to order a few of their more popular entrees here. First, we ordered the Pork Soup Dumplings and Scallion Pancake to start. Oddly, there were only 5 pieces in the order of soup dumplings for $13. Typically at restaurants, at least 6 are served in an order and, in some cases, even 8! 5 seemed stingy. Also, quite steep for just 5 pieces, but, nevertheless the quality was better than I would have thought. The Scallion Pancake was OK. Nothing spectacular, but it was a nice, simple appetizer. For entrees, we got the Chicken w. Bok Choy (mostly for our kids) and then went all out by ordering the Truly Sichuan Mala Hot Pot / Spicy Pot and Crispy Duck Special. The Sichuan Pot was hugeee and had lots and lots of stuff in there - chicken, veggies, lots of lotus root, bean sprouts and shrimp. As you can imagine, the pot was red all over with spices and we were not ready for it AT ALLLL. The lotus roots actually numbed our mouth after we ate them! They weren't very spicy, but something in the ingredients completely numbed us. It was an extremely strange feeling and sensation and made the dining experience a bit uncomfortable, but like the troopers that we were, we ATE ON! My wife loved the pot and the food in it, but I thought it was just OK. The Crispy Duck was quite disappointing for me - dry, not very big and did not look appetizing at all. It was sadly cut up and plopped on top of lettuce. I definitely was not a fan for $25. As for the Chicken w Bok Choy, it was good, but, once again, not the greatest dish you'll ever have, but it was solid. Could the food have been better? Definitely. Could it have been worse? Yes, I didn't have high expectations. But, it came out to be decent and edible, which was more than I could have imagined. I didn't think we were going to order the Sichuan Pot or Crispy Duck, which were quite pricey. Would we come back? Ehhhhh. One time was good though.

Went for a weekend lunch after a long time. We arrived exactly at noon when they open, whole place was empty. The condition of the restaurant was little underwhelming, our table was so wobbly we had shove few napkins and chopsticks under it to stabilize it. The menu looked the same from before. We ordered few of our favorite dishes. Crispy duck was so good with the duck sauce. The fish fillet over spicy soup was favorite dish of the night for e. It had the citrus zest and kick of the Sichuan spice. Soup crab dumplings were super tasty as well. Overall it was a wonderful meal for the whole family. I was pleased to see they were able to maintain the taste and quality of their dishes.

Tried pickled mustard fish this time. It's good. Definitely has some heat to it. Comes with rice noodles (clear noodles). You can adjust the spicy level. I ordered lowest level still a little spicy for me.

We loved the fish!! So flavorful and huge portion so we brought it back home to enjoy the next day. Be careful not to eat the chili seeds lol We were able to get seated very quickly for a weekend lunch. Plenty of seatings too as restaurant is spacious.

    Chicken dumplings

Wonderful food options! Not your usual chinese restaurant. Lots of interesting options on the menu. We had a terrific meal. Note: we got all of our meals with NO hot spice. Steamed Chicken dumplings were delicous. Classic preparation with a thin outer dough and a good amount of tasty stuffing. Pork Buns equally delicous. Thick outer dough with a generous amount of tasty minced pork stuffing. General Tso's Chicken was another classically prepared meal with very tender chicken and a very generous portion. I think enough for 2 people. Dan Dan Noodles was the only meal I would give a ding to. I found it way too oily and damn if I could find any minced pork. But it did have a nice flavor. Our female server was so very sweet and accommodating. Double checked our order and answered all of our questions. We went on a cold Thursday night and they weren't busy. She was the only one working in the dining room taking calls and serving. She handled it beautifully. Just wish the parking in Ridgewood was easier!!!!!

Happy to have a local Sichuan spot! The wontons in chili oil are banging and a must have every time. My family has eaten tons of wontons, and even the toughest critic admitted these were legit. Additional fan favorites are the dan dan noodles, Chinese eggplant in garlic sauce, and crispy fish with crispy onion. The chow fun was most disappointing - clumpy and dry - but that might be a factor of having it to-go. Overall still happy with the value and quality of food. Will be back!

Food was prepared quite quickly. Quality was alright (i.e. level setting expectations for this type of food in a suburban setting) Waitress was pleasant, attentive, and refilled water without asking; primary gripe was the tacked on 20% service fee which seemed purposefully "hidden," and not mentioned at any point until payment. Whereas the receipt still has further suggestions for gratuity. So you face the awkward predicament of assuming the waitstaff "knows" that their gratuity is part of the 20%, or wondering whether you'll get chased after you leave the restaurant on the basis of not tipping beyond the service fee percentage. Restaurant should just raise menu prices (which were already a bit on the high side), if the POV is that the staff isn't being paid enough with current pricing.

The exterior architecture is stunningly authentic, channeling a traditional aesthetic complete with a beautiful outdoor fish pond (no, you cannot order them for dinner, though don't quote me on that because I didn't actually ask). Upon stepping inside, you are greeted by an inviting, ornately decorated space. It feels a bit vintage and dated in the best way possible, offering a unique character that modern, cookie-cutter spots just can't replicate. We were seated promptly at a table adorned with actual fresh-cut flowers--a beautiful detail that immediately separates this venue from places utilizing tacky plastic alternatives. The service here is absolutely impeccable. The server, the manager, and the support staff operate as a highly attentive, deeply friendly team. We began with appetizers: a simple vegetable roll for my girlfriend which she declared was absolutely amazing, and the boneless spare ribs for me. While boneless ribs are an absolute staple on any Chinese takeout menu, I have never had a local version execution this elite; they were perfectly lean, deeply flavorful, and entirely free of the typical fat pockets you usually find elsewhere. For the main course, my girlfriend (who doesn't eat meat) ordered the tofu and mixed vegetables blanketed in a rich brown sauce with a side of brown rice. She rated it as one of the best variations she has ever encountered, noting that the kitchen's flavor balance was so dialed-in that it required zero corrections from additional soy sauce, salt, or pepper. I opted for the General Tso's Triple Fragrance, featuring a massive, premium protein trifecta of chicken, beef, and shrimp tossed with fresh vegetables and brown rice. It was extraordinary. Hunan Taste simply does not belong in the same conversation as your standard neighborhood joint; it operates entirely in a class of its own. Ma Chinese Cuisine was certainly unique, but the positive reviews and delicious-looking pictures convinced us to try it for a takeout dinner. The woman that answered the phone was friendly, professional, and a complete joy; we had a reasonably large order and she coordinated it with easy accuracy. When we arrived at the place to pick up our goods, we saw that the restaurant had a spacious room dedicated solely for to-go orders, as well as a modern dining room for those deciding to eat there. The place was spotless and even the takeout area was bright and welcoming. Our ride home consisted of about 20 minutes of driving time, as well as another 20 or so minute stop at the supermarket, but the food was still warm by the time we arrived! We unpacked the sturdy, insulated bag they had provided and were happy to see that our dishes all arrived as requested and in generous portion sizes. We started by sharing a few items, like a quart of the House Special Soup, which included shrimp, white meat chicken, and pork with mixed vegetables in a chicken broth. The strands of pork were a bit chewy, but the chicken and jumbo shrimp were tender. The broth was flavorful, but light on the sodium and better with a dash of black pepper. We also divided up the Mu Shu Chicken with chicken strips, cabbage, and egg that we were to wrap in pancakes with sweet hoisin sauce. The pancakes were fresh and held up even when they were stuffed with the warm filling and heavy sauce. They tasted like they were handmade and not from any sort of package. The actual chicken mixture had a slightly burnt flavor, but was otherwise delightful. The only issue was that there was so much stuffing and only four pancakes. We probably could have used six to eight instead. Lastly, we shared the Chicken Lo Mein, which needed more chicken and some vegetables, as it was mainly noodles. It was richly flavored and not at all greasy, though. We then each had our own entrees. I opted to get something from their "Steamed and Grilled" section of the menu. My Steamed Shrimp came with a wide selection of vegetables, including Chinese cabbage, napa, jicama, broccoli, carrots, string beans, and snow peas. The vegetables were all crispy and fresh, and the shrimp were plump and delicious. I got it with a "light" spicy garlic sauce on the side, which apparently had no cornstarch in it. The sauce was very thin, so I assume that was, indeed, the case, but, despite being heavily wrapped, a good portion of the sauce had leaked out into the bag. I will say that the small drop I tried had a nice heat to it. I also sampled a bite of someone else's same version of the dish that had been sauteed and not steamed, and thought it was spicy and well-cooked. Someone else in our group had ordered the Shrimp with Honey Walnuts, not realizing that the shellfish would be fried and the sauce mayonnaise-based, so she was not thrilled, but that was not the restaurant's fault. However, she did mention that she thought it was bland. Despite her main dish, we all though T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine did a nice job with our meal. Everything was lightly salted, not too greasy, and with enough flavor to keep it interesting. Plus, the staff even made little bags for each of us that included a fortune cookie, sauce packets, and plastic silverware; it was a very cute touch.

For our main dishes, we ordered the beef short ribs, which were generously portioned and full of flavor, along with beef chow mein and vegetable and egg fried rice. My personal favorite was the chicken and broccoli in a rich sauce which really stood out. The service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive, offered great recommendations, and even brought me a fork when it became clear my chopstick skills needed some work. The décor transports you and complements the dining experience beautifully. The décor makes you feel like you've been transported somewhere far more exotic than Westchester, which pairs perfectly with the food and the overall vibe. We came for a break from pasta. We left planning our return.

Ohhhhh where are my manners. Welcome to O Mandarin of the hamlet known as Hartsdale. You may…read moreacknowledge this hamlet as the direct creator of the first Carvel. Your lady may know the area for it's shopping centers. But let's reverse the story and talk about how those in the area know O Mandarin as the go-to Chinese location within town. On a sweaty yet chilly night on the mountain I wear out my days atop, I did feel the necessity for some grease lightning in my veins. Those who know, know that 2025 was the year of self-recognition for many; Finally realizing the Chinese man/woman that lives inside us all. But yes... that lava-like frozen night on the top of the peak of which I typically reside upon... I, a newly found Chinese man, began to ponder. In the forenoon, I performed an advanced tai chi sequence of which burned an excess of calories. I mixed in a bit of Yang, Chen and Wu. My internal energy crescendoed, and I stored up this potential energy for a later time. The time had come. I began to mull over options, utilizing that stored and compact energico. I - in traditional fashion, placed my milky and subtly manly yet intricate hands behind my back, lifted my shirt just enough to showcase half my belly button as well as the entirety of a happy trail which was cornered by the remnant peaks and valleys of tapered obliques. It was one of those winters. Dirty bulk. Needed to add muscle to a frame that some begged to question: "Is there really even more muscle in this word to add?" Others, such as my grandmother, would tell you differently. But what does she know. I shan't worry about the summer cut that I will (and have) inevitably side-stepped. I live in the moment. And in that moment, on that toasty yet frigid night along the coast of the pinnacle of which I'm placed, I knew I needed something to clog my already choking arteries. - My cookie numbers in the month of December bypassed a century mid-way through the calendar. I was handling temporary diabetes well. The acute symptoms of a piss per hour, shortness of breath, and new fat corroding my core didn't stray me away from the course. On this journey, I had many a greasy nights. It's perfect for winter. Cuddled up with my own fat, I lay back in a coated serenity... pale and pudgy... delighted but weary of the general joy I find within what should be a desolate sadness. The Joker may pair well with the Queen, but doesn't the Joker really need to be the Queen's Ace of Spades? Possibly a King? A balance difficult to strike. But if we don't strive for perfection, then how do we end up with more Linguini's? - Anyways... nearly flailing from heart attacks, I stared out the window across the trees into my neighbor's living room 1000 yards away. I seeked... sook... sought inspiration for my night's meal. I began to rage and show signs of a true outburst. The energy from my Tai Chi postures was spilling over. My eternal happiness was being intercepted by despair. Hey tubby - Why don't you eat what's in the fridge? Hey box boy, why don't you drop and give me 50? Hey loner, why don't you go do calisthenics at the park? Hey kid, why don't ya grow up? Good thing I was too distracted by my chiseled face in the glare of my neighbors window 1000 yards in the distance. You so handsome. You need soup. Of course. I should've known. The only inspiration I needed was from myself. Eureka, I refused to yell for I am no chum and surely not a bum. But Eureka I surely experienced. I lifted my chin in congratulatory fashion to myself, tilted my eyes into the sky. The first drop of flurry. It was time. Chinese time. When it's delivery time in Westchester, there are only a few places to even truly order from. The lack of good Chinese in this area is disparaging more than it's disappointing. If you are above or at the border of a certain town and up - There are no questions. O Mandarin provides the answers. Solid soup. Nice dumplings. Good Fried Rice. Decent noods. Good General Tsos. Some additional good and unique players. Quality protein. You don't feel gross from the ingredients, you just feel gross from the sheer quantity that you destroy. The way it should be. Nothing's really kicked my shins, nor has anything blown my socks off but they definitely do a solid job of keeping you coming back the next time. I've also picked up a few times to survey the entrance of where I'm placing my trust upon, lovely ambiance in their restaurant. I'll have to actually eat-in once. You can't make me, but I can make myself. If you're willing to eat in, then it must be solid. You can do much worse, but I don't really think you can do much better for takeout in most of Westchester. A worthy four stars. We are in the middle of the year of the fire horse. Don't tame him. Ride the fire this winter. Stock your stockings and stock your stomach. My weatherman says Chinese winter begins on November 1st - So you'll find me chomping down on some of the O Mdin' beginning then. Bai Bai, Baby - LB.
