One of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. my wife and I have been here over 100 times in the last dozen years or so. Outstanding cuisine, Creative bar, great staff, fabulous service, and a comfortable environment. I'd recommend something particularly but the reality is almost everything I've had been excellent. And, everyone has their own taste so I won't get specific. What a wonderful surprise to find this hidden gem tucked in the winding roads to Clifton, VA. The ambiance in the great room or the patio is far removed from the noise of life and provides for a relaxing atmosphere. The food? The food is beyond reproach and equals or exceeds most 5* restaurants, domestic and abroad. Some of the mixtures and quantities of ingredients, like the smoked paprika on the pork tendorloin and the lemon acidity on the asparagus, were spot on. We went for restaurant week with the family (4). It was ok. Some dishes were fantastic and some like the duck pate and the pork dish were missed. Starting with those the duck mousse was missing a hit of salt. The dressed greens that came with it though were delicious. Really bright dressing. The pork dish was bland in presentation and taste. Way too much sugar in the onions (or some very sweet onions) it was almost like a relish. and the grits also tasted strangely sweet. The pork itself was tasty but lacked salt and acid. The fantastic: the octopus was amazing. I went out on a limb bc usually I would never order that but it was the best dished of the night. Venison also fairly good. I also did the wine pairing which was three full pours 38$. Desserts were ok. Kids liked the cheese plates husband's apple crumble was just ok and not inventive. My tiramisu riff was actually the best and the best presented. Quite beautifully plated and pretty light overall. It wasn't tiramisu traditionally speaking which was why I ordered it! The other dish we liked was the salmon. Perfectly cooked with crispy skin and so delicate. Atmosphere is ok. Not particularly welcoming or romantic or particularly good for families per se. My wife and I had a wonderful experience at Trummer's. We were greeted with exceptionally friendly service as Mirren escorted us up the elevator to our second floor table by the window with a view of old town Clifton. Hannah dropped by to make sure we were comfortably situated in the elegant space as Justin approached with bottled wine, specialty single serve wine, and food menus. He was knowledgeable, personable, and professional. My scallops were perfectly cooked and the bite I had of my wife's salmon was delicious. After cleaning our plates, we indulged in Justin's recommendation of banana fosters beignets. It was complimented by an exquisite espresso. This is one of our favorite local bars. There's always some sort of happy hour special either a discount(20% today) or a special drink price. Enjoying time at the bar is always entertaining. The bartender was an expert at his craft. His cocktails were popular. I always enjoy a Golden Monkey beer while the drinking partner enjoys her Titanic's. They brought back the fresh cut chips and added a hint of Old Bay. They were tasty but the crab mayo dip was meh. No distinct flavor and an awful beige brown color. I enjoyed the Flank Steak salad, everything on my plate was reminiscent of a full dinner(fries, steak, wedge, blue cheese chunks and ranch). It was definitely a good hearty portion. We enjoy this local bar and have also enjoyed dining in the restaurant. There's outside dining(patio and front porch). They have their own parking lot so no need to compete with the Clifton street parking. read more

Rating is a 4.5/5 Trummers on Main is located in Clifton near the railroad tracks in between Centreville and Fairfax Station. We came here on a Saturday night for my mother's birthday dinner. It was relatively easy to get a reservation by calling in. We got a 5:30pm dinner reservation (I called in around 2:30pm the same day). Make sure to call in because on their website it actually said they were closed for a private dinner event. So, I was shocked when I called to make sure they were closed and they said they were open. We were seated on the third floor, and we asked to move to the corner table--which they gladly accommodated for us. The atmosphere is wonderful. They have great music, a beautiful layout, and a wonderful spread (on the third floor). The sommelier and the wait staff were wonderful as well! We were served warm spiked apple cider (had brandy in it) to clean the palate. We also got a bottle of pinot noir to share. They bring out their homemade corn bread--which is very unique and tasty (is complimented with rich butter and a nice marmalade/jam). We ordered the salmon, rockfish, beef Wellington, and the Veal Chop for entrees which were all very tasty! We were thoroughly impressed. The truffle fries were also VERY tasty! The food is definitely of good quality. We were so full that we couldn't even finish the truffle fries or our entrees so we skipped out on dessert but the server (JP/JR?) brought 4 chocolate truffles on a plate with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate with a candle. We were so touched--we did not expect it at all. The only critique would be that they seemed to have trouble remembering to refill or bring back my brother's beverage. AND to update their website. Made a reservation several weeks ago for 2/12, they had a Valentine's Day menu which seemed agreeable. Was seated in a nice table right on time. Everyone was kind and welcoming, but the service was incredibly slow. We placed our order for the app, entrée and dessert from the beginning and it took 2 hours for us to get everything. Was ready to leave after the entree and asked for desserts to be boxed to go. I get that if there's a tasting menu with lots of courses it can take long, but this was 3 simple courses. Also, the food left a lot to be desired overall. For the price we paid $92/person, I would not return. Apps: tuna tartare and baked foie gras- both very delicious, the best overall course. Entrée: tenderloin with grits - very delicate tenderloin, cooked to perfection, but flavorless grits. Duck confit taliatelle - just ok, can tell pasta was made in house Desserts: chocolate tart and napoleon - the napoleon was nice but the chocolate tart had no complexity in flavors, just dense layers of sugar, did not enjoy. read more

For cocktails we got the Main Street (bourbon drink but on the sweeter side because of the honey) and Sage (beautiful combination of gin and sage). I recommend getting either one! It pains me to write this because we held our wedding reception and have often celebrated special occasions here, but I recently had the worst fine dining experience of my life at Trummers on Main. For my birthday, after a year of dealing with cancer, I thought having dinner there would be a safe bet. This would also be the first time we brought our two-year-old to Clifton. Unfortunately, they absolutely ruined the experience for all of us. Apart from some of the drinks, everything was awful. We were left unattended for extended periods and our requests for straws, the dessert menu, and water glasses were ignored. At the 120-minute mark, my friends went inside to speak to someone with authority about the situation, as our waiter repeatedly ignored our attempts to get his attention. The food finally arrived about 20 minutes later. The food was nothing like the wonderful dishes we remembered from previous holidays and special occasions. My husband's chicken dish was dry, my sister-in-law's watermelon gazpacho was bland, and it took the servers over 40 minutes to bring her some salt. The first cocktail all the adults tried--the first I'd had in over 365 days--tasted like grape juice. Patrons at every table on the covered patio complained about the service that evening, wondering aloud where their food was. I can't even recall what I ordered; it was that forgettable. I was so upset that I left to show my daughter the trains outside. Apparently, they brought out a complimentary dessert platter after we left and explained that they had forgotten to put in our meal order due to a new ticketing system. However, that doesn't justify a two-hour delay, considering we repeatedly asked the waiter about our food, and he could have checked on it. They eventually comped the meal, but I would have much preferred to pay for a wonderful experience than to have a bad experience for free. Needless to say, I was starving that evening because it was too late to secure another reservation for the evening, and I ate leftovers from the previous meal. Not only did they ruin my birthday dinner, but they have also forever tainted the memories we have of this place. read more

Went there for Mother's Day brunch expecting there to be actual brunch food. There were four options that were all dinner options. Absolutely no options were anywhere close to "Brunch food". When I asked for the regular menu options I was told no. The only other option they would accommodate was chicken tenders and fries that were being served as an off menu option for the kids. Assuming that this is because the kids menu was just adult food in smaller portions. The other option I was given was for them to modify the food resulting in much smaller portions but for the same cost. For an almost 90 dollar meal the portions were already laughable, so I was not paying for only half the food. The cheesecake was not a real cheesecake, it was a half inch thick square, that was maybe 2X2 inches, drinks were decent, but way over priced. We were also given the wrong check, and had a very hard time tracking down the waitress. Overall honestly ruined my Mother's Day. All I wanted was a normal brunch. read more

Amazing amazing food! My boyfriend and I went there for restaurant week and will definitely be going back. First off, Old Town Clifton is a super cute area for date night. Trummer's is a fantastic place to go too! There's a bar downstairs but also a nice dining area upstairs. The staff are all extremely nice and helpful when asking for their recommendations. Like I said we went during restaurant week so we had a three course meal. I started with this watermelon tomato salad that was delicious!! It was refreshing and light. Then my main was this crusted fish. I forget what the sauce was, but it was amazing. For dessert I had this toffee chocolate mousse...mmmm!!! It was so smooth and rich! We had such a lovely meal here. Upon entering, the hostess was welcoming and friendly. The first floor is the bar area and there is another dinning room upstairs. Our server was incredibly attentive and friendly. All the employees here were caring and made our dinning experience that much better. The complimentary bread they bring out is amazing! It was so fluffy and soft within. We enjoyed our meal, some dishes that stood out were the Polenta, Shrimp & Grits, and Beet Salad. The Flank Steak was good, but the flavors didn't stand out as much as we would have liked. There are better tasting steaks out there. It was still tender and presented nicely. Their Campfire S'mores dessert had a lovely presentation and it was fun to roast our marshmallows in a restaurant. The marshmallow is homemade and it covers a chocolate truffle. It was my first time at Trummer's and it was a delightful experience. There were lots of people on a Wednesday night but the gorgeous, multiple, spacious rooms contributed to a lively ambience while still allowing for intimate dining. Although the menu was not extensive, every dish we had was superb. Server Brie was wonderful - anticipating all our needs before we even knew we had them. She patiently explain the menu to us, made excellent recommendations, and was never far away. At one point even Mrs Trummer, checked in on us to see if everything was up to our expectations. Trummers remains one of the gems of the nova area. Tucked away in the little quaint town of Clifton. I chose this lovely venue to propose to my girlfriend and they made it a truly special night of dining. If you've never been you must try their titanic's. Also if you haven't been in a while their new chef is doing spectacular things. I've been visiting trummers since the beginning and I must say they're evolving really well with the times. Outstanding local place in Clifton. Go for the signature Titanic, which is hands down the best cocktail I've had in the area, and stay for the ever changing brunch, bar and dinner menus and their excellent variety of pop ups. Reservations recommended for brunch or dinner, but you can order the entire dinner menu from the bar. The staff doesn't rush you through a meal, the atmosphere is lovely and it's usually quiet even if full. Great place for events, as well - I could see having a rehearsal dinner or a family party in the upstairs dining room, for sure. read more

The dishes that we ordered were delicious and our server brought surprises to celebrate my birthday (thank you so much Brittany! ) in forms of champagne and a mock tail for the husband who was driving us tonight, a free chocolate dessert and a happy birthday plate with a candle and two pieces of cheesecake. it was so unexpected but well done, amazing hospitality and I was so spoilt! I think this place was way overpriced and just ok. My husband and I went for our anniversary the other night. When I called to make a reservation, the very nice girl in the phone asked if we were celebrating anything special and I said our anniversary. I feel like if they ask that, that means we are getting something a little special? Maybe a glass of Prosecco or a dessert on the house? Unfortunately, all we got was mediocre service and a tipsy table that my husband had to wedge his napkin under. While the server was very nice, he wasn't great. I don't know if he was new or what, but it took a really long time for service. At one point I ordered a glass of wine with me meal and he completely forgot. He didn't come back to check on us and my husband had to flag him down to ask for the wine again. He also didn't refill our water during the entire meal. I am all for a long meal with ambiance, but my husband and I had a 2.5 hour meal and we really could have used more drinks but just weren't able to! The food was also...good but not great? We had to pay for bread service and the bread was nothing special. For some reason, they are doing this weird tiki bar theme so all of the cocktails were tropical and I feel like that was so strange for a fine dining experience. Trummers is a nice restaurant; I don't want a drink in a coconut with a plastic straw. My husband and I got the beef tenderloin steak tartare. We were very surprised when it was a cold but cooked lump of meat. It was good but I thought we were getting a raw dish! It was kind of like a weird, fancy, cold meatloaf? For our mains, my husband got the leg of lamp which was actually a rack of lamb (which the server told us about and was great bc rack of lamb is obviously better) and I got a short rib gnocchi. Both were very good, the lamb was the star, but the potatoes that came with the lamb left a lot to be desired. They were pretty dry. For dessert, we ordered the bourbon glazed peach pound cake and I had an expression martini. The martini was served in a glass that was almost a wine glass which made the drink separate and it was kind of gross. The dessert was ok, the peaches weren't ripe so I think the chef subbed nectarines, for some sports, and the pound cake was dry. I would skip this spot and head to the outpost in Gainesville! read more

Trummer's menu changes all the time, so it's difficult to tell you to go and try a certain dish. I've mainly had dinner here and tried brunch once. Although their meals are exceptional, I am more of a fan of their dinner entrees. This latest visit consisted of: apps: she crab bisque, pea appetizer, baked brie dinner: flounder stuffed with crab, table-side truffle pappardelle dessert: bread pudding, sorbet flight, and textures of orange Yes, we did try a lot! The bisque was creamy and silky all at once. The sherry was just right and didn't drown out the crab flavor. The pea appetizer was something we didn't expect. It was like a spring salad, light and refreshing - I believe they were a type of southern pea, not anything I have tried before. They were cooked well enough to be soft, but not undercooked and hard. it wasn't heavily seasoned/salted, pretty tasty. As for the baked brie, you really can't go wring with hot brie wrapped in phyllo and topped with berries. It was delicious, the perfect combo of sweet and savory; and it was buttery good. The flounder was a touch on the salty side, but I think that was due to the bit of caviar that topped off the dish. I don't think I paired it well or right because it followed the bisque. Live and learn. Anyhow, the fish was soft and flaky. I believe the sauce was a buerre blanc, I definitely would have like more of that. The star of the evening though, was the pappardelle. We had the pleasure of the owner come table-side to prepare this dish. He poured some Hennessy into a huge parmesan wheel and lit it on fire, mixed it until it was melted enough to coat the hand cut pappardelle. It was then plated and generously covered in black truffle - it was super, every person that ordered this dish was more than happy with his/her choice. The best dessert was the bread pudding. It was flavorful and buttery. The toasted nuts that topped the pudding really brought it all together with the smokiness and a bit of saltiness.The textures of orange was a deconstructed type of ricotta cake accompanied with a citrus sorbet, oranges and other tasty bits I can't remember! The sorbet flight had an apple cider flavor that won out over the other two, and honestly, if you have room for dessert, have the bread pudding, you won't be disappointed. Honorable mentions: the cornbread has a crispy outside and soft inside - very good. We were also served a nice warm cup of their spiced cider (it had brandy in it, but you could barely taste it); it's perfect for any chilly day and was very comforting, a great holiday drink too. If you haven't been here yet, you really ought to give it a try, this place is a gem! read more

Last night was my wife and my 4th visit to Trummer's on Main. We always loved how homey the atmosphere is and how welcoming the staff is. This was the first northern Virginia farm to table restaurant that really got it right for me. And being located in Clifton - they set their prices appropriately. The reason for 4 stars this time around is because last night was a bit off. Mainly, we had issues with service for the first time. While our server was extremely friendly, he virtually ignored us after our entrees were served. Additionally, no attention was paid to where the table was in conversation - people just barged in and interrupted us mid sentence on several occasions. After we ordered our appetizers, two different sets of bus staff came to take our plates away - before we'd finished them. The worst part of it all was we told them right off the bat that my wife had a crustacean allergy... she asked if a substitution could be made to one of the dishes, which she was told was completely fine yet she was brought a dish with crab in it! The server was extremely apologetic and the manager didn't charge us for the dish - but holy cow... this type of allergy is a life or death situation and you'd think that the servers would take it seriously. As for the food - last night was also not on par with our previous experiences. The cornbread which we usually love was bland and crumbly. The appetizers were all quite good - we ordered a butter lettuce salad, baked Brie, foie gras, and she crab soup - all of which were fantastic (unfortunately we were rushed to finish them as mentioned previously). For the main course my friend ordered shrimp and grits which he rated an 8/10. My wife, our other friend, and I all ordered the scallops. They were served with an uni and crab risotto, bergamot and lemon gelee, and saffron broth. I already mentioned the issue with my wife's dish having crab in it. The problem for me was that the whole thing felt off balance. While the scallops were delicious and cooked perfectly, there was no uni flavor in the risotto, there was only a spoonful of saffron broth, and the entire plate lacked acid. I think the gelee was supposed to bring that element, there just wasn't enough of it. For sides we ordered Brussels sprouts which honestly were the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had, and grits with black truffle which were equally delicious. The restaurant comped our dessert as an apology for the mix up with my wife's entree and gave us roasted marshmallows which was a pretty cool touch - they bring out a mini campfire to the table so we could roast the marshmallows (which were a chocolate and peanut butter truffle inside solidified fluff) - it was a fun experience and very flavorful. Per usual, the prices are right for the location, and the majority of the dishes we had were great. Unfortunately our main courses were off last night and the service definitely left something to be desired - but I trust this was just a hiccup and we look forward to returning. read more
