I don't think there is an official "dress code". If you're going for brunch, then shorts and flip flops would be ok. However I would recommend something nicer than shorts and flip flops for dinner.

It depends on your budget. Dinner is really good but the plates are tiny. The idea is to get a lot of small plates to share (which I don't like too much). This can be expensive. Brunch is normal portions and great. Just depends on what you prefer.

I was blown away! He remembered me and my order. I am not that regular a guest. He is just that amazing. And, it doesn't stop there. A few minutes after delivering my food, he brought a to-go box, because he knew I always take most of my meal with me, and I'm always in a hurry. That's not great service - that's extraordinary service! At one to two times a month, Erick makes me feel like a 5 day a week regular. We drive an HOUR to this freaking place to get turned away at the door because it's technically "a bar" even though they have a full dinner menu. When I point out none of this is advertised anywhere, I'm informed it's on Open Table, and that we should've seen it there, and were dismissed. They said they could give us another restaurant recommendation and then proceeded to just dismiss us without even that courtesy. We go back to verify this age limit, and it's there... one TINY line 2 scrolls down on the page, WAY beyond any of the information needed to just book a table, which is the only thing Open Table is used for. Complete waste of time for a poorly advertised bar with zero helpful staff on a dumpy street by the airport.

It was all perfect!! They also kindly brought us out a really good peanut butter and jelly macron, but the star was that it was topped with a gold dusted Wu Tang emblem on top - LOVE!! Trust is an OK place. It could have been a five star experience but the combination of a couple of things subtracted one to one point five stars for me. 4/5 stars for customer service. Making the reservation was pretty painless. What exceeded expectations was their follow-up... they gave me a call the day before to confirm the reservation. Pretty cool. The service in the restaurant was good as well. I thought the busboy service (e.g. refilling our waters) was a little over the top (minus a star). I felt like they were constantly refilling our waters, not giving us a break to actually enjoy our own company and food. 3/5 stars for environment and atmosphere. We rolled in about 5pm as they opened for dinner. The restaurant itself is a bit small and cramped. The music itself was a bit loud. Again I didn't feel 100% comfortable. 4/5 stars for food quality. The trust burger was pretty tasty. I didn't think the extra ham and egg were worth the $3 additional dollars. The fries were crunchy and tasty. My companion had the iron steak- reports stated that it was not that impressive. I've heard that other things on the menu are better. 3/5 stars for pricing. This place is priced a little high for the quality and quantity. $14 for the burger. $28 for the average tasting steak. You are paying for the location IMHO (i.e. Hillcrest). Overall a 3.5 star experience I'm rounding up to 4 stars because I'm feeling generous. I'm not sure if I would come back here again. The place was good but not great. read more

I LOVE this place for breakfast. You have to try their pancakes and sticky buns! The dinner menu is interesting and the food is good, however, the portions are too small for the price range (this is coming from someone who has dined in NYC for the past 10 years). Same goes for the cocktails - what is it with new bars using jiggers to measure out the amount of alcohol in a drink? And why can't I taste it? Their cocktails are well-crafted, but at $12/drink, they need to add some alcohol. The last time I ordered two of the spicy tequila cocktails and didn't even get a buzz. Finally, their hours are not good. I have tried to come here several times for breakfast and lunch and they don't even open until 5:00pm. That is insane to me. Also, they close at 10:00, and with the addition of the outdoor couches and fire pits, it would be nice to have them open a little later. Oh! One more thing! This is important for anyone ordering the cheese plate: The only time I ordered food that was genuinely bad, was when I got the cheese plate. It is not a cheese plate. Instead, it contains the following: pork rinds, weird pickles, strange thin chips, lots of different mustards, barely any cheese at all - all of which surrounded a large hard boiled EGG in the center of the plate. This place is amazing. We were luck enough to dine during their soft brunch opening. I wasn't sure what to expect b/c it was their first time serving brunch, but every single dish was delish. We were with a big group so we had a lot of the menu items. I won't bet into them all, but these were our favorites. Baked Eggs - As soon as I read the description, I knew I would love this because of the combination of Moroccan tomato sauce and tzatziki. It didn't disappoint! So many fun flavors on one dish. Chulupa - This isn't something I would normally order but a friend got it and it ended up being my favorite. It was smothered in the best mole I've ever had! Sticky Bun - Uh yeah. There's a note on the menu that says "limited quantities" and one bite and you'll know why. I was tempted to ask if I could buy every last one. Fried Chicken Sandwich - I'm not sure if they make their own but the roll this sandwich came on was so, so good. Yeasty, light and amazing. The chicken was perfectly fried and came with a really good asian-y sauce and pickled veggies. It was like a Vietnamese guy married a Southern bell and had a very yummy baby. We recently visited Trust Restaurant and had a mixed experience. I ordered the steak and eggs, which was pretty good, the steak was cooked perfectly and full of flavor, and the bread was cooked on wood and it tasted delicious. On the other hand, My husband ordered the burger, which we had heard great things about through countless glowing reviews, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype for us. It tasted pretty average. We actually ended up sending the burger back, and the staff kindly remade it for us, which we really appreciated. However, even the second time around, it still didn't taste quite right. It was also my husband's birthday, and although the restaurant was aware, there was no small gesture, no dessert, no candle, no acknowledgment, which was a little disappointing, especially given the reputation. Have to say that our host was very nice and very fun and sweet! She was very welcoming, which made the experience great overall. Been here several times....amazing experience every time! The attention to detail on every dish, by every staff member around the restaurant, is something to be applauded. Oxtail Raviolinis own my heart. Order it. Every salad is so fresh and delicious. Every item I have tried is flavorful and perfectly portioned. The servers are awesome and come off as loving their place there - which is rare to see in an entire staff in full public view (bravo!). Desserts are so cool - layered with flavor - delish. If I am not in east village at Cowboy Star eating tasty meat by chef Vic, and not in North Park at Urban Solace thanking Chef Matt Gordon for the greatness of Chicken and Dumplings, then I will be in Hillcrest enjoying the mastery of Chef Brad Wise and team.....I highly recommend this amazing addition to the SD Culinary scene - great job Trust :) read more

This restaurant was so thoughtfully designed, which I really appreciated. The ceilings and walls featured sound boards with soft yellow lights--a perfect choice that made conversations easy, even with all the hard surfaces like glass windows and concrete floors. I loved being able to watch the cooks at work while enjoying my meal, and you could feel the great camaraderie among the staff. This place was OK. It really didn't meet the high expectations of being such a highly rated restaurant. No fountain sodas for the kids. The food portions are small and overpriced. The food quality is decent but on the night we came to visit they were not seasoning the food I guess. I had the lamb meatballs. Eh for a few meatballs with fairly run of the mill tzatziki sauce. Funny little dessert s were the highlights of the meal everything else was forgettable. The are better restaurants around that serve much better food. (Insert the new neighborhood powerhouse Bull & Grain here) overall OK I am sure it is better on other days. I will come back and give it a shot. After driving by it at least once a week for the last two years, my girlfriends and I finally had brunch here and it was worth the wait. Between us, we had the breakfast sandwich, pork hash, brussel sprouts and salmon toast. Everyone was so happy with their order. The brussel sprouts were the sleeper star of the show. They were AMAZING. The hash was heavy but also really good. Our server was the nicest, most patient human being. Our group had many modifications and demands, but she graciously handled them all as if it was nothing. Trust is also dog friendly on the patio which, being the psycho dog lady I am, pleases me to no end. I will be here again ASAP to try their dinner menu! read more

San Diego was really a mixed bag this trip but Trust was a shining star. To start they ensured every Covid related guideline was followed throughout the meal. Nest, service was spot on. Not overly attentive but always there just when we needed something. Drinks were perfect. Started off with a Daquiri #17 and it was as delicious as it sounded on the menu. We did a full meal and I have to say that everything that came out of the kitchen was perfectly prepared, plated and tasted splendid. Trust was recommend to us some local CA friends. My family and I took their recommendation and Trust will now be a "go to" restaurant when we're back in San Diego! The food is absolutely out of this world! We ordered 10 menu items for 5 the of us, with the grilled octopus, pork sugo, pork & beef dumplings and grilled cauliflower being our top favorites. The cocktails are fantastic and they have a good selection of wine. The staff is friendly and helpful, Caesar took great care of us! Ok so I WANT to really love this place. Really I do. All my friends raved about it. And I want to give it 2.5 stars. Here's the thing. The portions are tiny. Each thing is $15-$20, at first I was like ok not so bad. But then the plate came out and it's tiny. No big deal, I don't mind paying more for small yet delicious meals. It wasn't bad, but for the price and size I have had better. Also, we kept having to waive our server down, and it took 45 minutes to get our entrees from time of ordering. Trust is hands down of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. I am constantly recommending it to friends and taking anyone that comes into town because the food is insane and never disappoints. The last time I took my parents Stephanie was our server and was incredibly attentive. We mainly come here for the ambiance and friendly service. The front patio is beautifully lit and romantic, the inside of the former fire station has lot's of things to check out: b/w photos of old movie stars, bar area, back patio, photo booth and the dining room with an especially beautiful chandelier. We were at the high top having drinks and small plates by the bar. Since they didn't have a table for dinner we decided drinks and appetizers were all that we would do. The food is good but I have never felt so rushed to leave and unwelcome as I did at Trust. We still spent good money but I felt they wanted a bigger turnover so they can make more. read more

Fortunately, the menu is still attractive. It seemed as though the restaurant was having a bad night for several reasons, and I hope they rebound quickly because it is a wonderful place. When we were shown our table on the table, one of the seats was exposed to the light rain falling, but the hostess had left us there so we had to find someone else to seat us elsewhere. One of the servers spotted us searching right away and cheerfully found us a dry table. The 4 of us ordered 1 absinthe, 1 cocktail, 1 bottle of wine, and 4 Gourmet Menu dinners (3 course, fixed price). They were out of the cremant we ordered, and did the proper thing by offering us a different, excellent, sparkling wine (slightly higher price) at the same price as the cremant. Our dinners covered most of the menu choices-- mussels, shrimp, and salad for appetizers; steak, agnolotti, and short ribs for mains; opera cake and 1 each of the two sorbets offered. After a rather lengthy wait for appetizers, our server came to apologize that their mussels were sub-par that evening and asked for alternative orders. One who had ordered them switched to onion tart, the other to shrimp. Disappointing, but I'd rather not be served bad mussels, so well handled again. Three only dish that wasn't delicious we're the substituted shrimpwhich were served in a sauce that leaned heavily on strong, smoky flavors. Although the shrimp themselves were of excellent quality and plentiful, pairing them with the strongly smoky sauce put the dish off balance. All the others were expertly prepared and beautifully plated. Overall, a mixed experience this time, but the shortcomings were handled quite well. At the end, consensus was that we had a very nice evening.

But alas, Carbon Angela's Kitchen deserves every flower, every reservation, every "you have to try this place" text thread, and every bit of love. This place has become one of my absolute favorite hidden gems in San Diego. Easily top five for me, and as someone who dines out a lot for a living, that is not a casual statement. There are places you like, places you recommend, and then there are places that start to feel woven into your actual life. Carbon Angela's Kitchen is that for me. Angela is truly the heart of this place. She has this way of making you feel like you are not just coming in for dinner, but being welcomed into something she deeply cares about. And Emanuele is absolutely part of that magic too. Together, they have built something that feels warm, generous, soulful, and so special. They feel like long-lost friends and family now, and I am honestly just so proud of them and all they are creating. The food is the kind that makes you want to order with the whole table in mind. The griglia mista is hands down one of the best investments you can make if you are dining with a group. It is the meat platter, it is the moment, and it is absolutely worth ordering. Four to five people can split it, especially if you are also doing appetizers, salad, wine, and a few extra things for the table. It is such a perfect nod to what Carbon was before Angela took over, when the space leaned more BBQ, but now it feels beautifully married with Angela's warmth, Italian influence, and the kind of hospitality that makes the whole meal feel like an experience. And please do not sleep on the rest of the menu. The short rib is fire. The arancino trio is always a yes. The eggplant croquette? Obsessed. The crespelle? So good. The Everything Salad is my favorite salad on the menu, and the street corn should never, under any circumstances, be skipped. I said what I said. The wine selection is top tier, the appetizers are memorable, and the whole place has that rare magic of feeling cozy, intentional, and completely unpretentious. You can come for a low-key dinner, a girls' night, a celebration, or one of those "we just need a really good meal and a really good glass of wine" kind of evenings. And the back patio? Perfect for an evening under twinkling lights. It is one of those spaces that just begs for a long table, good conversation, clinking glasses, and the kind of night that accidentally turns into a core memory. They also have catering menus available, which is very important information to keep in your back pocket if you are hosting anything soon. What Angela has built is honestly something to behold. She started us off with some fresh baked Focaccia which had herb + cheese baked into the top (of course it was delicious). We added an appetizer called Crespelle which was a really yummy spin on a Manicotti made the right way (with a Crespelle). The salad was fresh and tasty. We order the Rigatoni Sugo which has a Tomato based sauce and assorted meats (Meatballs, Sausage, Cubes of meat) and was delicious along with the meats as well. We also added the Picanha Steak Entree with the Brie Fondue and that was so different while being soooo yummy. We enjoyed some wine with our meal and we finished with this really delicious Bavarian Cream Filled Napoleon with a Berry Coulis (desserts do change so check with restaurant to see what they have available the day you want to visit).. The place was empty on a Friday at 7 which was weird, but the decor and ambience are really very nice. Anthony was friendly and energetic and gave very enthusiastic descriptions of all the menu items. He was attentive and kept our drinks full and crumbs cleared, but the flow of the meal was relaxed which was good because there was so much food in the four course prix fixe. Another example of the excellent service was this: the sun was in my eyes and I mentioned it but they didn't have blinds to draw, so Anthony went and found a large umbrella from the patio and moved it until it blocked the sun, watching my face til I was no longer squinting. As for the food: The sourdough was delicious and the herb butter really elevated the already great bread. I had the pork belly appetizer which was a generous portion with the frisée and other greens on the side too. The fat was well rendered so it melted in my mouth with wonderful caramelization and crisp edges. It was sweet but also tangy with the kumquat slices on top. The sumac popcorn was a fun and unusual addition and altogether I would highly recommend this appetizer. My friend had the gnocchi which was a bit dense but I loved the mushroom flavor and again, it was a generous portion. Very cool variety of mushrooms in it and the truffle wasn't too much. I chose the little gem wedge salad which came with the most wonderfully crisp guanciale. The cubes were so light and crumbly-crisp they seemed like they were freeze dried. The buttermilk blue cheese dressing was excellent, and my friend's Cesar salad was very authentic and looked great as well. I was starting to get full at this point so I started saving room for the short rib main, but the portion there wasn't overwhelming. The honey cornbread was sadly my favorite part here as the meat was not as tender as hoped and could have used more bordelaise. After the appetizer and salad (and I don't even usually like salad) the main was only so-so. For dessert my friend and I shared the s'more which sounded like a must, and the blueberry cobbler (crumble?). The s'more was delicious though more a mousse than a s'more as the marshmallow aspects (inside the mousse and the sauce as well) were not strong in taste and didn't really get across the marshmellow idea. Maybe if the sauce was thicker and torched more like a meringue but it tasted more like a cream sauce. The crumbs were very tasty and I loved that the chocolate portions were not too sweet but more bittersweet which helped with the richness. The blueberry dessert could have used more of the crumble as that was the best part, but it was pretty good. Overall we had a great time and enjoyed the cocktails as well. The blackberry cocktail was our favorite of the two we tried and we stuck with that one. One thing to note was they had changed the menu so that more of the items on the menu were upcharges for the prix fixe, so the value was not as good. The original price was enough of a deal that it did draw me more to trying this place. But overall still solid, though given the stiff competition in San Diego for fine dining it's not high on my list to run back.
