The portions felt small compared to the price, especially considering the self-service setup, and the concept of having sushi sit out and be individually packaged also made the experience feel less appealing compared to freshly prepared sushi. The prices, given the format, didn't feel justified. It works if you are in a rush and want something convenient, but it does not feel like a place where you would go specifically for a memorable sushi meal. The atmosphere is also more functional than comfortable. Since it is designed around quick pickup, there is not really much of a dining experience. The process is simple, but the presentation and setup make it feel closer to airport or convenience-style food rather than a traditional sushi restaurant, and the energy of the space is more about turnover than lingering. I bought a few nigiri to take on the plane. A got a few shrimp and a few salmon nigiri along with a packet of soy sauce, Ha, the nigiri never made it to the plane. Tsukiji Fishroom is located in the Terminal 3 Food Hall / Global Bazaar. The sushi is pretty expensive. A large box of 12 pieces of nigiri or 24 pieces of maki costs $33.99. They also have quite a limited selection. For airport sushi within the US, this is on the better end for sure in my opinion. It's cool that they fly their fish in from Japan, but make sure you level set expectations because it is frozen and you can tell the freshness doesn't match sushi you would find in Japan... despite all that, it's still a solid option if you're craving sushi though. Located close to the C90 gate. You'll find it within a food court that has a lot of other options too. When I was there, they didn't have too many pre-packaged varieties so I went with building my own box of sushi. They have all their sushi made already in the fridge, so it's up to you to pick out the sushi you want to fill up a box. I did the "12pcs" box and that was a good filling amount. Each wrapped piece seemed to count as one (so you could get two rolls wrapped as one for example, but the rolls are on the smaller end). I stuck with a variety of salmon and tuna, which seemed to be a good choice and bang for my buck. The fish is average but not bad. What I was happy with was that the rice wasn't hard, which is a problem at some places, but not here. A good place to grab and go! It's pretty quick and you pay at the self-checkout. No "dining" in, but plenty of tables all around the gates for you to sit, eat and also charge your devices. read more

This place could not survive out of the airport in NJ (let alone Tsukiji!!!), but for EWR airport standards, I think its one of the better options. Got a tuna bowl. At $12, I felt that the price was reasonable compared to other airport food. There was a decent amount of tuna, and the tuna did taste quite good and fresh. For $16, it wasn't cheap - but again, this is an airport - and my god, it must be a pain to wrap sushi in such a detailed manner. There's gotta be an extra wrapping labor surcharge for that, right? I got a mix of the salmon rolls and headed to my gate to chow down. Checking out was fast and seamless - I suppose nobody wanted sushi at 9:30am. After all, the crowds were all around Poppy's Bagels. New concept - you pick your own combination of sushi pieces that are individually wrapped in plastic. I got the medium box which was 8 pieces and about $12 I think. (Small is 4 pieces and just a couple $ cheaper.) Box says prepared daily. The rice was so hard it tastes like it's been sitting in the fridge for at least a day. I'm knocking a few stars down due to the rice, you would think fresh fish would be paired greatly with they same focus as the rice but not here. There's an rice machine to assist the sushi chef, which is a dead giveaway to lower your expectations. What made up for the rice is how some of the fish tasted. This is my go to spot in terminal C at Newark. I don't care if I'm flying first thing in the morning or arriving late at night, I'm probably stopping here. The fish is great, like some of the best salmon I've had around these parts. The rice can be hit or miss like folks have mentioned, but I find if I give it a little squeeze you can kind of tell if you're getting hard rice. I typically pull pieces from the back/top as those seem to be the newest. The wrappers get annoying when you're housing pieces like I do, but whatever. Despite the less than ideal reviews, I decided to give this place a shot.. and I'm glad I did. The sushi was indeed fresh and well made. Is it the best sushi I've had? No. But at the airport on the east coast, it's pretty good. Tip: The rice can be a bit hard if you eat it right after purchasing because obviously, refrigerated rice becomes hard. But if you let it sit for a minute, it's much better. Glad I tried it and it made for a nice meal that's not typical airport food. BTW: It's located by gate C75. I wanted to believe that your fish, flown in straight from Japan, would elevate the soulless and mediocre OTG food complex that's colonized Newark Airport with iPads, leaving homogenized faux-globalism in its wake. However, when I approached the counter (very cute, with nice murals), I noticed there were no prices. Like, anywhere. A bunch of signs on different sizes and how it works, but not a dollar sign to be seen. No worries, there was a guy chopping up new rolls as well as a guy restocking. Well... neither knew. No offer to help me find out, either. I literally asked, "Well, do you know who could tell me?" The guy chopping turned away, and the other guy walked away. I was so happy to find this gem in the Newark airport! This stand contains a selection of individually wrapped nigiri and maki sushi pieces. You can select a box of appropriate size and fill it with whatever items you want. Very clean and tidy. Perfect for traveling. The sushi quality was decent. I was a bit skeptical about this spot after reading about it in the newspaper. It definitely sounded gimmicky, and folks who know about sushi know that it's not only about where it comes from, but how it is prepared. As such, I have come with appropriately low expectations about the quality of the food here - and I can say that not only is it not as bad as I feared, but some things are actually pretty good here. The bad / less ideal: don't bother with the sushi. You will get varying qualities depending on how long the rolls have been sitting in the refrigerated display. The taste is fine, and if you get a more-freshly made roll, you might end up with something that is decent - but it will always be a bit of a crapshoot. On the other hand, I had a chance to grab a rice bowl (which is a less elegant way of saying it's what passes for a poke bowl nowadays) with salmon...and that was very good. The salmon was of decent quality, but served with sushi-style rice and a good helping of seaweed salad made it an excellent meal to wolf down while waiting to board. If only more poke spots were like this - and serving it for $12 - it would be a hit anywhere else, despite being on the simpler side. As with many of the OTG-managed spots in EWR's Terminal C...don't expect the food to be world-beating, but in this case, the food was on balance, and it was better than ordering sushi from one of the sit-down spots in the terminal as well. And if you can get your hands on a rice bowl (which I have only seen once out of the few times I have passed by), definitely grab it - it'll be better than the food you can get on the plane. read more

I had a long layover at the Newark airport and decided to give them a try. I liked that you could pick your own and got an 8 piece variety box. But when I started eating, all the sushi was old with rice that had hardened and caked off. It was so bad I pitched it and got some sushi at the ramen place. Bu then (as I had a long layover), I thought I would try the their sushi already packaged at one of the Cibo Express shops dated for the following day. Shame on me for the second attempt - it was just like the first and I pitched it all. I've never written a yelp review so you can understand how upset I am with their product. Is zero stars not an option? I have lived in Tokyo and been eating sushi regularly for more than 30 years. As you can imagine, I was very excited when I heard there was a sushi shop in Newark airport where they flew the sushi in from Tsujiki market every day. I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews for this place. The prices are actually quite reasonable if you get a medium sized box of 8 nigiri pieces for $15. The quality of nigiri is very good and comparable to really good sushi I've had in Japan (especially the salmon.) Just be sure to fill the box with the nigiri instead of any of the cooked sushi and it's definitely worth the price. read more
