I usually stop in a few times a month for lunch when I'm working in BR, and it never disappoints. The spicy edamame or miso soup to start, and then any one of the specialty rolls. The Best Bite, Hung Lo, and Green Monster are my favorites, but I haven't really been disappointed with anything. Came in on a Wednesday night, the evening before LSU graduation, around 7. Place was moderately busy. We did not have a reservation, but my wife and I were seated almost immediately. Solid first impression. I do not remember the host's name, but she was friendly and efficient. No awkward waiting around. Our server, Luna, was excellent. Kind, patient, and knew the menu. She answered our questions without rushing us and checked in at the right moments. We started with a couple cocktails from their menu. I do not remember the exact names, but one in particular stood out. Bourbon, citrus, and ginger. I think it was called the Kyushiki. Expertly prepared. Balanced, not overly sweet, and clean on the finish. Whoever is behind the bar knows what they're doing. We ordered a couple miso soups. Good flavor, not salty, subtle miso presence. The broth was darker, closer to a beef broth color, with mushrooms. Tasty, but I would not call it a traditional miso. Still enjoyable. Spicy edamame came out warm with a nice kick. Not over the top heat-wise. There was a subtle sweetness that worked well and kept it from being one-note. We ordered four rolls: Salmon Pesto Roll, Musashi Roll, Rainbow Roll, and Father Calais Roll, pictured left to right. All four were fresh and well executed. Nothing was over-riced, nothing drowned in sauce. Flavors were balanced and intentional. Each roll stood on its own without feeling heavy or sloppy. Overall, the service and food were top notch. The atmosphere is cool and the set up is really cute but it appeared they may have been short staffed when we went there. It took over an hour and a half to get two rolls which we found very frustrating. Hopefully it's changed, but if we were in town again, I probably wouldn't return because they didn't seem to care either how long we had been waiting. My daughter is a new sushi lover so I took her on a Tuesday around 3pm. We were seated at a small table for 2 with a beautiful river view. We started with the Shishito and Shrimp. This was pretty good but I needed a better dipping sauce. It was happy hour so certain rolls were discounted. I was disappointed to learn that they didn't have or were out of the fried rice. We decided to go with the Big Easy rolls and the Shrimp Tempura rolls. They took a little while to come but we enjoyed the view while waiting. My daughter was disappointed that the Big Easy were only 4 rolls. Nevertheless, they were good. I also enjoyed the Shrimp Tempura rolls. Our server was friendly. I have to disclose that I am not a sushi eater, but everyone else in my family is. Fortunately for me, there are other options. I did enjoy my drink (and helped finish someone else's who thought theirs was too sweet--ha). The food is fresh and the restaurant is very upscale, coupled by the incredible view from being situated on the rooftop. I ordered chicken, veggies and rice. It was fresh and there wasn't a single thing I didn't like. The rest of the crew ordered a bunch of sushi to share, and we all shared some edamame. Both the Grand Isle roll and the Hato Drink were delicious. The rolls were very reasonably price. The edamame was okay except I misread the description for the spicy ones - they are soaked in a sweet chili sauce. It tasted okay but was not what I expected (fault of my own). It never came. There were literally three other people in the restaurant when we were there. 25m we waited for one of the most basic rolls there is before we said forget it and asked for the check. So much potential but horrible management. Speaking of, apparently the manager wasn't there either. Very disappointed...and still hungry. And out $75 (including tip). read more

When the oven failed to cook the salmon topping on one roll, a "chef" grabbed a crème-brûlée torch and scorched the entire platter. This restaurant is located inside the Shaw Center for the arts, but you just take an elevator up to the Tsunami restaurant where you'll see a beautiful view waiting for you ! Highly recommend a reservation coming here but we did show up early for ours and they seated us right away. The service and atmosphere was absolutely amazing. My husband killed the big easy, the salmon pesto, and the black and gold. They were gone before the tugboat in view pushed a barge up river. I had tickets for the Manship theater and discovered that Tsunami Sushi was located in the same building. Although I difficulty raising them on the phone, their online reservation system worked out fine. when we arrive there immediately seated us at a nice table that had a beautiful view over the Mississippi river. As I usually do, I asked the guys working behind the sushi bar what was freshest and they told me that "it was like Sunday," since they're closed on Sunday and Monday and this was a Tuesday, but I suspect that some of the fish had been around since the previous Saturday or maybe even longer. I was disappointed that their menu sold both nigiri and sashimi by the peace as opposed to having three pieces per order. For appetizers, we ordered their regular edamame and shrimp and shishito tempura. The shishito peppers were huge, but they only gave us three shrimp and the batter wasn't the light, airy temporary batter that I'm used to. When our main course came, they put both my dining partners order in my order on the same plate, which was confusing to us at first. I had ordered yellowtail shishito, and I immediately noticed that the knife work was poor - one end of the piece was twice as thick as the other end. When I asked for a small bowl to make soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi, the server initially didn't know what I was talking about, but eventually brought me the correct small bowl. It ended up being a nice meal, but far below my standards for a top level sushi bar. read more

I think the obvious reason to choose Tsunami is the view of the Mississippi River and the downtown Baton Rouge area, and for that, it is worth the occasional visit. Our most recent visit was okay, but nothing stands out. I reserved our seats through Resy, as recommended on the Tsunami website. I was easy to do, but trying to manage it later was a little difficult. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly and engaging hostess, and my request for a view was accommodated as we were sat along the window. We had a lovely server with a big personality, and she was helpful when choosing out dishes. They primarily have the QR code menus, which for a couple of our older guests (and even myself as these aren't always easy to see with the lighter writing), was a little aggravating. We had one table menu, when I think two would have been more useful - It was a little difficult to catch anyone to ask for another one given the location of our seats. We also advised that we did have a couple of non-sushi eaters with us. There really is not a large selection for non-sushi eaters, which we knew, but most other sushi places have a little more variety. They were able to locate a couple of things that were acceptable for them. As for the sushi, sadly, nothing we ordered really hit the mark. I have had numerous rolls at Tsunami that had their own, distinct flavor and spices, but everything we ordered was fairly bland. I was with non-raw eating sushi patrons, so perhaps that was the reason, but I would have expected something like the Big Easy roll to have a little more flavor. Instead, it was over tempuraed, and fell apart very easily. Tsunami does go out of the way to recognize special celebrations, so be sure to let them know if you have any occasion for which you are there. All in all, a pretty okay experience for the evening, I just wish the sushi would have made more of an impact. read more

They disappeared for 15 minutes before even taking our food order. I had to go find them. The sushi rolls were ok. However, the salmon nigiri was thick and tough like a leather belt. Have you ever been to Tsunami? It sits on the top floor of the Shaw Center of the Arts in Downtown BR and it's quite a chic experience. It only took one visit for me to know that! I met up with a friend for a midday lunch and catch up. Start at the bottom taking in all the coastal and regional art, then take the elevator to the top floor, and you're there. We sat at the bar and started off with the Ika fries. These are calamari strips served with a tsurai dipping sauce. It was delicious but we definitely didn't finish it all. I ordered the Black and Gold roll (crunchy shrimp, Kani, baked with spicy mayo, crawfish and scallions) and it was absolutely delicious. We decided to sit on the rooftop deck and have drinks. We chose the Moshi Moshi (front) and the Fushimi (back) for the first round then decided to do their take on a lemon drop and a specialty blackberry drink for the second. I made a reservation at Tsunami Sushi in Baton Rouge for the 4th of July to celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary. The restaurant confirmed our reservation online, and we even called ahead to double-confirm. When we arrived, we were told there was a special event and, despite being on their reservation list, we weren't allowed in because we didn't have a ticket for the event. There was no mention of this event on their website, and no one informed us at any point--not in the confirmation email, not on the phone call, and not on the website. We were simply turned away and told someone "must have messed up," and that they couldn't honor our reservation. It was incredibly disappointing, especially since we're from out of state and had been really looking forward to celebrating a special evening here. Poor communication and a complete lack of accountability ruined what was supposed to be a memorable night. read more

I think it's necessary to hold companies accountable for all of their business/services. While I have generally had decent experiences at Tsunami, their New Year buffet which cost me over $100 per person felt like a total ripoff. I think for the cost it was pretty reasonable to expect some semblance of comfort and quality of food. With it being a cold evening, they were completely unprepared. No heaters, no level of service whatsoever. Paying $70 extra for the food (regular rooftop ticket was like $30) while having to sit outside in the freezing cold eating stale sushi, while watching people indoors who paid for normal priced rolls sitting indoors in comfort was a complete slap in the face as a patron. The sushi was clearly made well ahead of time as it was dried out, so again had to watch other people pay less and eat BETTER food in the HEATED restaurant. Based on the ticket price, it was reasonable to think the restaurant was going to be closed and it be a private event for the evening. Completely unacceptable for what the tickets cost. Never again would I attend this event, and it has actually tarnished my image of Tsunami in general. read more

We started with the haiku cocktail, which was just the right amount of sweet and refreshing! Our drinks were waiting on us when we got back from taking pictures and enjoying the rooftop sunset. I started with a glass of Chardonnay and a seaweed salad (delicious), then ordered a variety of nigiri sushi. Everything came out quickly and was delicious!
