Entrance is deceiving. Entered from the street where the "open" sign was displayed. Walked into the kitchen and was directed around the corner. Tried house wonton soup, orange chicken, house fried rice and chicken and broccoli. Standard fare Americanized Chinese food with lots of sugar and mostly bland flavor profiles. I now live in California in which the Chinese food is uber authentic and crazy full of flavor. Not much difference between Fan bistro and the other restaurants in town. Great and helpful staff. Can get busy during dinner and lunch hours with takeouts. Takeout drivers are the nicest people and I'm hoping they're getting those tips digitally, too. We have been using Fan Bistro at work for a little while. The food is always delicious and everything is delivered as promised. Today we placed an order for 12. Everything was delivered as requested. I love how the sauce, utensils and napkins come in an individual packet per person. No more looking for sauce or utensils. My eggplant with shrimp is loaded with eggplant. I go to this restaurant several times a year when visiting relatives in the area. Their food is consistently good and their portions are good (we are usually all full after eating!). They hired new staff in the last few months and their service has greatly improved! So overall, I'd highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the area. The food is always fresh, packed cleanly, and at an affordable price with large portion sizes. My personal favorite is their selection of sushi, which is always fresh and flavorful. Basically, the prices are up and the taste of the food is diminished. I always get take out, or have the food delivered, so I can't comment on the ambiance of the restaurant, because I don't eat there in the building. Fan Bistro is conveniently located, and they do have delivery service, but that's no longer enough. The place hasn't been the same in the last few years. The food is generally fresh and the quality is abve average, but nothing has a distinctive taste. I ordered General Tso chicken and shrimp with Chinese vegetables, plus a quart of soup and two appetizers, and everything was pretty bland. I think they must have a frequent turn over of Chefs. I am going to give the place a rest for a couple of months, and try some other local Chinese restaurants. read more

We love the food here, but the other night I had to wait 40 minutes past the promised pick-up time for my food. When I arrived about 20 people were waiting for pick up. Meanwhile, the DoorDashers were coming in to pick up their orders non-stop. The table that once held the DoorDash bags was empty when my food finally came out. I assume they prioritized the DoorDash orders because they feared bad reviews. Here's the thing though, your DoorDash customers are brand agnostic, and are not your loyal customers. Used to live in the area and this was my go-to Chinese restaurant (note: they do both Chinese and Japanese cuisine). They have a great interior with plenty of seating. Always liked them because their food isn't super greasy/oily like other Chinese restaurants in the area. Feels a little more clean tasting here. Meat quality is always great. Flavors meet expectation, but nothing over the top. Portions are always pretty good - usually have a decent amount where you get to take home a little leftover. Their food is presented well (especially with the sushi - they do sushi boats!). Service is always quick and friendly (even with the takeout). A well run business. Then was told I couldn't use it since I ordered a lunch special and coupon was only valid on dinner, once again not stated on coupon. Nice atmosphere, BYOB, good food.  Consistant flavor on cooked meals, sushi however can be hit and miss depending on who's building the pieces.  Wait staff also hit and miss, sometimes they definitely give you attitude.  If you just want soup to go or a small lunch snack, watch out for their minimum charge limits.  A little pricey for this type of food also. read more

Ive been coming to Fan for about a year now and their food is always great! Minus one star because the service is hit or miss but i am never disappointed with the food. Today i got 3 sushi rolls and with tip my bill was a little under $13! Unbeatable. I got the salmon avocado, white fish tempura, and sweet potato roll. All delicious. The tempura rolls are usually too big to eat in one bite gracefully but oh well. I also love getting their bento box dinner combos when i am reallllly hungry. The bento box comes with soup, salad, dumplings, a 6 piece california roll, shrimp tempura, THEN rice and your entree choice. It is sooo much food and it is all great. The steak teriyaki is never overcooked and falls apart in your mouth. This is my go to place for asian food in this part of jersey! Oh and it's BYOB so i also love coming here for lazy date nights. read more

Took my friend out for her birthday, I have been very very tight with money lately and worked hard to gather some money to take my friend here for dinner. We ordered food (which was good, there was something questionable in my drink which I did not say anything about but i kept quiet - and the bill came. I paid for it & left a tip (I normally ALWAYS tip 20 % however, I did not actually have the money to do so today with my funds so tight) I left a 10% tip, which I felt bad about but I gave what I could & am truly grateful for our waiters service.. The waiter came up to me and asked me why I tipped him so little and that his manager told him to ask customers to give him atleast 15% tip and that what I gave him wasn't good. I was so taken back by it and I was SO embarrassed that my friend saw that I didn't tip very high and he actually handed me the receipt and pen to tip him more. I asked him, "I'm confused- are you telling me 15% tip is mandatory with the bill or are you just asking me for more money?" And he said "im asking you for more money" I added more to the tip and left, however I think that was VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. VERY RUDE. I work in a tipping industry and even though it doesn't feel great to not get a high tip, I am grateful for anything. I have had people not tip me before and I can only assume that they just don't have it and that's okay. Times are tough right now & They paid for their food/ service & that is the only thing required at the end of the day. What a nasty thing to have someone actually ask you for MORE of a tip because your tip wasn't good enough. What a WILD experience I have never had this happen to me. It is such a shame because I order food from here ALL OF THE TIME. 2 seems generous; the Cold sesame noodles were really salty with virtually no flavor of tahini. I tossed them after a few bites. The moo shu pork was totally lacking in egg and full of cabbage. For those of you who haven't been here in a while (or ever), the sit-down restaurant portion is finally open! The configuration of the original restaurant has been changed so it is just a large counter for take-out orders - you enter the restaurant from the parking lot. The menu has changed very little on the Chinese food end of things, but a decent Japanese/sushi menu has been added. The restaurant has some high-backed booths along the walls along with regular tables through the rest of the space. It's a bit darker than you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant, but the ambiance is quite nice - a little bit more romantic, if you will. They've barely been open a month, so I'm not going to be too nit-picky with the place. The food was solid, as usual. The pan fried dumplings were out of this world - they definitely don't skimp on the meat like many places do! The Man enjoyed his chicken with broccoli as he usually does, and I was quite satisfied with my beef chow fun. Our entrees were served on standard white china, and everything was quite tidy. The service was prompt and friendly even though the restaurant did start to get crowded while we were there. read more

Second time in the past month, same scenario. We have been going to Fan Bistro for years. We were trying to remain flexible since the times are tough. I do takeout from Fan Bistro once a week and the food is consistently good. The menu is diverse- so some of us get Chinese food, others get sushi. And the sushi is alway very fresh which is so important. From the sushi menu, I recommend the Rainbow Naruto roll which has every type of fish rolled in cucumber. My son loves the Yellow Beauty (shrimp tempura, cucumber topped with mango). My other go-to's on the Chinese dinner menu is the Young Chow fried rice and the Happy Family. I had to eliminate a star because the food is often not ready when they say it will be, so go at least 15 minutes later than they say. And there can be quite the line which moves slowly. But I'm willing to put up with it since the food is worth it. read more

Take out disaster. I ordered a meal for my family on-line at 4PM for a 6PM pick up. I received an e-mail confirmation. When I arrived there were 8-10 people standing in the rain waiting for their food in the parking lot. The hostess appeared intermittently to ask for order numbers/ phone numbers to check on status. An order would come out here and there, but the crowd began to grow and it was clear that they were falling further and further behind. After standing in the rain for 45 minutes, I once again asked for my order's status. I was told 5-10 more minutes, which meant that they probably hadn't even started on the order I had placed almost 3 hours prior. With that, I canceled and walked away. I thought that restaurants were staving for business? Why do this to paying customers? I don't like having my time wasted. Never again. read more

This was my first time trying this location of Fan Bistro. I got the lunch special with 2 sushi rolls, one was cucumber eel and the second was spicy tune. The miso soup and salad that came with it was really tasty too! I ordered online and went to pick it up about half an hour later. The employee that I interacted with did not seem the kindest. They took great care of me. I used their web site to put in a take-out order and drove over to the Livingston location to pick it up. When I realized the Livingston location was closed for renovation, I was pissed! I assumed they had closed and didn't take down their web site. That's when I noticed several missed calls on my phone. Turns out I had actually ordered from the New Providence location, and they were wondering when I'd come pick up my order. When I told them I meant to order from Livingston, and would not be able to drive to New Providence to pick it up, they put me on hold and then quickly came back to tell me they could send their delivery person out to bring it to my house, no extra charge. I was happy to hear that! I was ready to write it off as lost money, since it was ultimately my fault for not paying attention to which address I was ordering from. I tipped the driver more than average, hopefully it was worth the extra hassle for them. Also, the food looked beautiful, and was delicious. read more

I have been looking for some Chinese food for over a year now. A neighbor suggested I try this place. They have a daily lunch menu so I figured let me try it on a special just in case I don't like it. I ordered the Chicken & Broccoli/ Brown Rice with a Won Ton soup. Overall I would say it was pretty good all things considered. I think it could have used a lil more flavor but nothing some soy sauce didn't fix. The waiters were friendly. It was $8.25 tax included not a bad deal especially in this area. I would give it another try. read more

This is my fourth time here. It is convenient to home and I prefer to dine in rather than take out. The dining is loud, but otherwise very nice. Food is okay, just okay. Everything they serve tends to be bland and just barely hot. I order anything I eat here "hot and spicy" and still have to ask for mustard to spice things up. Also, they rush to get food to you, but don't cook things long enough for them to be hot! My dish tonight, Happy Family, included scallops. They were fine, tender and mild tasting, but cold! Service is the real breakdown. All servers and bus staff rush customers through. They are poorly trained, anything but friendly, and not attentive to anything other than the check which they picked up twice before I could sign the CC charge. I waited until I had this fourth, similar experience to write this review. If it weren't convenient, I wouldn't come here, ever. Looking for an alternative. read more

When this was called 'China Fan' it was a fantastic take out place. Everything fresh, crisp and tasty. 2 months ago, they added a formal restaurant, and changed the name to 'Fan Bistro' In the 5 times we've gotten dinner from the take out since then, it's gotten progressively more mediocre. Tonight was the final straw: they forgot the white rice and the brown sauce for the dumplings. The dumplings were dry, and different then they had always been before...and so was the won ton soup. The egg rolls were soggy, and tasted like the kind you get at a cheap food court not the ones they usually serve... and, the boneless spare ribs were fatty with lots of gristle. The final insult was to replace my normally crisp and tasty shrimp toast (which is on the menu) with soggy, oversized funky - tasting shrimp puffs. We have been getting food here weekly for the past several years; but we won't be coming back any time soon. read more

Living in Summit I have not found a decent Chinese place in the many years living here, always having to go to different towns. .......finally, Fan Bistro. :) Fried rice is delicious......and their pork egg rolls are the BEST! My husband loves the General Tso Chicken, and their other chicken w/ asparagus or chicken with steamed vegetables is fresh and delicious....they don't overkill it with that awful brown sauce. Delivery is always prompt and courteous, and the prices are reasonable. The sushi is very decent too, I have been getting California rolls (not raw fish...not sure if I would venture there w/ a NJ Chinese restaurant). This has been our go to weekly Chinese takeout place. Not long ago I would have given China Fan a 3 to 3.5 star rating, but now, Fan Bistro got too big for their pants. I feel that "The Fan" has more than they can handle especially now with the recent closing of Chen's. I'm sure they picked up more customers, but they haven't learned how to handle the customers that they presently have after re-opening. I don't get it. They have more staff, cooking and serving, but the service is MUCH slower. I often order take out and they have gotten my order wrong on several occasions, approximately 3-5 times. Examples are white rice instead of brown rice, chicken instead of shrimp, vegetables instead of shrimp, sometimes no shrimp at all in meals that call for shrimp. I must mention, however, that I made a call after the last order mistake. They kindly took down my name and number and credited me for the next time I placed an order which they honored the next time. I hope they can get it together because the area needs a place like this. I hope that customers enjoy better service in the future. read more
