This is still a strong go-to for a good meal!!! The food is ALWAYS amazing, with great flavors and a strong presentation. This is what keeps us coming back! The service is good, but not great. Our server last night held true to that. I can't put my finger on it, he checked on us some, but not quite enough. We actually asked a different server for our check because it had been awhile since we'd seen our server. The atmosphere is my biggest gripe. My opinion is that it is a large, cold space with no distinguishing characteristics. It does have many large tables, which often draws large groups. This location is okay the food has definitely improved but it still feels like the place isn't quite finished. It was beyond cold inside, to the point of being uncomfortable. We went on a Friday evening, and there were maybe four tables occupied, so not very busy. The band was playing, and they were actually quite good! My only suggestion would be to turn the music down a bit so everyone can enjoy their meal and conversation. The space could also use some work on the acoustics. read more

We came for restaurant week and had the complete opposite experience than we had before. Waiter had no clue about the restaurant week menu. He did figure it out eventually and we ordered. My cauliflower appetizer came out first and was amazing as always. Then my husbands came- it was the queso- a hot pan with melted cheese, onions and Jalapeño. (It was delicious btw) We had no clue what we were supposed to eat it with. Since our waiter was busy catering to his large tabletop- we flagged down another employee who said we were supposed to have tortillas. By the time we received the tortillas, our meals came. Both the sirloin and the short ribs were wayyyy over salted but good. But since we still didn't see our waiter, we just ate it. Half way through the meal- my husbands onions came out. Ridiculous. Then came the desserts. OMG! And not in a good way. I felt like I had Covid all over again! Neither had any flavor. The pistachio dessert was basically the same thing my mom made in the 80s. Only this one had old canned chunks of pineapple and no flavor. The Nutella dessert had half of a rock hard cookie. I don't even know what flavor it was... I did eat the topping which was a cream cheese and flavorless Nutella mousse. But there was a faint hint of cream cheese so it was the better of the two. I still don't recommend it though. I was surprised to see our waiter since he spent 99% of his time at his large party and basically ignored his other 2-3 tables. He asked which dessert was our favorite and we both said neither- they were both bad. He said oh sorry and then asked if he could get us anything else. Hard pass. The bill came, we paid and drove home. I 100% do not recommend getting the restaurant week menu. It's a better deal to order everything separately. Although everything except for the desserts were good, the service was really really bad. I mean like really bad! First time here. I had the barbacoa and it was very tasty. The meat was lean and not too greasy. Overall the food was good. The only gripe is that it doesn't come with anything like beans or rice. Unfortunately, this is a mixed review. Don't have anything bad to say about the quality of the food or the waiting staff. However, I was shocked and unpleasantly, surprised by the condition of the men's restroom. Unknown to me the toilet seat is broken, and when I went to sit down to use the men's restroom, the seat slid from under my thighs and pinched my inner thigh and scrotum sack. To say that it was extremely painful would be an understatement anyone who has ever had their skin pinched off by a door or any other mechanical mechanism would know that it is an unpleasant experience. My waitress as well as the kitchen manager made efforts to contact management to rectify this situation since the bathroom was in this dangerous condition however, the kitchen manager said that the owner and General Manager did not answer his phone calls. For the side of town, where this restaurant is located was extremely shocked to find the only toilet in the men's restroom to be malfunctioning in this dangerous fashion. Food was great, but due to my personal injury, I must say that the whole experience was ruined by the condition of the men's restroom, which is still in that condition at time of this writing. I want to start by saying, I love the food and the service. Ambiance, an indoor playground is some sort of a unicorn in San Antonio. Amazing! The biggest down fall in my view is the price. There are additional costs for everything. Salsa extra, tortilla chips extra, tortillas extra, sides for meal extra. That easily adds ups and seems a bit deceitful. My girlfriend wanted to come here for her birthday without ever having it before. She loves Mexican steakhouses and we are frequent restaurant goers, so I agreed to check it out and try something new. To sum up the experience, by the end of the night, we are a having a redo birthday dinner. To start, there was one server on staff who was also working as the bartender. He was very sweet and personable, but he wasn't set up for success due to the lack of staffing. It felt that the ambience was very stale and low energy inside. We ordered the cauliflower and bone marrow as an appetizer- which I can make a better bone marrow at home for $15 at HEB. There wasn't any flavor or seasoning that stood out. The cauliflower was good, though. The second order of drinks took about 25-30 minutes and our steaks took 40+ (I wish I was exaggerating), which was shocking, considering nobody was there. When my girlfriend (the birthday girl) finally got her steak, it was overcooked to medium well when we ordered it rare. Mine was fine and it was good, but hers took an extra 15 minutes for it to come out the right way to only be subpar. They gave us a complimentary dessert which my dog would've loved. I only say that because the base of it seriously seemed like a dog treat with strawberries and creme on top. Being a frequent restaurant goer, I never expect things to be comped, but due to the ticket time and error of the steak, I do think they should've done SOMETHING with our ticket, but they didn't. I am incredibly disappointed and frustrated with the lack of professionalism at Tu Asador. I made a reservation for four people a day in advance for 5:30 PM. When we showed up on time, the doors were locked and the restaurant was completely closed. To make it worse, they had a piece of paper taped to the door showing "new hours." Even according to their own handwritten sign, our 5:30 PM reservation fell well within their open business hours. I called their second location to find out what was going on. The woman who answered shrugged it off and claimed that Google just hadn't updated their hours yet. When I read the dates and times from their own printed sign on the door back to her--proving we should have been able to walk right in, she completely dismissed it and just said, "Oh, they must just be closed today." It is completely unacceptable to accept and confirm reservations online when you aren't even open, and the absolute lack of accountability or care from the staff is incredibly unprofessional. We had to scramble to find last-minute dinner plans for a group of four. If you are planning to eat here, do not trust their online reservation system or their listed hours. Call them directly beforehand to see if anyone actually decides to show up for work that day. read more

I'm super excited that someone new is in this spot. I know this spot is kind of hidden away and you have to want to come over here to be over here. Well, this place is something to come for. Food was great. We did "the experience" and selected a bunch of things to add. The server was kind and helpful to walk us through it. Meat was good. I was very impressed by the sirloin. They had live music (we were there on a Friday), and that was fairly loud but we weren't screaming. And it was in "the lounge" so we weren't directly by it. We got margs which were pretty good. The frozen machine had just been finished, so I got one on the rocks and it was made well. Maybe a little syrupy, but not bad. The big one was pretty big. It's a steakhouse primarily, I'd say, so you're going to pay like a steakhouse, but we were expecting that. We'll def come back. read more

This is for Castle Hills location on 7/25/26. They do not appreciate long-time and loyal customers, and the speaker music is so loud and annoying that you can't have a conversation without speaking very loudly. When we spoke to lady manager or owner, she was indifferent and said to just move to another table. She wouldn't even lower sound a little. With food already on the table, moving would have been a huge inconvenience including for busy and limited wait staff. We have brought dozens of new friends over the years and it's quite expensive for Mexican food so to ask to simply lower volume and been told "it's the ambiance we want to create," and being so indifferent made me realize to never return and post to all my social media. Frankly, I actually think all customers would have also appreciated it. It's not what ambience restaurant wants to create but rather what do your customers want. They don't understand marketing and doing surveys as nothing would have happened if they lowered music volume but something will happen when we don't return and no more new customers are introduced by us. Our dinner was $275 for three people (only 3 cocktails), so yes I expect a comfortable ambiance. They no longer have live music on weekends and menu has been reduced to much less items than before with costs outrageously high - hello! It's Mexican food, not French gourmet. Thus, you NEED our business and my many friends I have introduced to this restaurant given I have many choices of where to eat. Time will tell if other customers will also not return and getting us back will not happen. Our guests, there for the first time, also said they would not return simply because of the loud music. I would bet my entire expensive meal that if they asked a few tables if the music was loud, others would have agreed. Welcome to the neighborhood! Went to the new Encino Rio Tu Asador tonight. Complimentary house made potato chips with tangy sauce. Outstanding appetizer: Broiled cauliflower- yes really! Absolutely the best cauliflower I have EVER tasted. Hubby had a fabulous (and huge) beef sandwich, I had enchiladas suisz. Both outstanding. The refried beans were flavorful and dusted with queso fresca. Everything was beatuifully plated. They just got their liquor license and now have an full bar. Service was attentive and we were checked on regularly, iced tea filled without having to request more. Private party room for about 30-40 people. Will open a covered patio soon. Our server had great recommendations on drinks and food to order since it was our first time there. We obviously got what he recommended to try it out. We went with queso as an app and the table experience they are known for. The queso was less of what you expect but more of what you want. Melted cheese with meat, paired with flour tortillas that taste like they are hand pressed and cooked. The experience was exactly what you want if you're looking for a meaty meal. The service was terrific and the ambience was good but a bit too open for me, if it had been busy it probably would have been a bit noisy. My big problem was with the short ribs which were way over salted. I tried using my water to soak the rib and remove some salt but soaked ribs weren't great. My wife had the street tacos which were good but dry and all their salsas were too spicy for her. I can't recommend the place based on our palates but others must like it. The menu is fairly sparse but most people could probably find something to try, but it's going to cost them more than a lot of other places. read more

I sent this to the manager on fb messenger -- no reply Dear restaurant manager I'm writing to express my disappointment with a recent experience at your restaurant. My party of nine made reservations and were informed via email that business casual attire was required. We all went out of our way--at the last minute--to meet that expectation. However, upon arrival, we noticed that the restaurant was not busy and that many other guests were dressed in casual attire, including shorts, sneakers, and flip-flops--outfits specifically listed as unacceptable in your communication. This double standard was frustrating and made our extra effort feel completely unnecessary. Adding to the confusion, your website presents the restaurant as upscale, supported by higher menu pricing (e.g., $20+ appetizers, even more for entrees). Yet the presence of a playground inside the restaurant felt inconsistent with both the expected dress code and the restaurant's tone as presented online. In short, we were misled. If the dress code isn't enforced consistently, it should not be communicated as mandatory--especially when it causes guests inconvenience. I hope you will address this inconsistency so future patrons aren't subjected to the same confusion and frustration. read more

I went two days ago with family. The folks who chose the big shared meal enjoyed the beef and baked potato very much. The two of us who ordered the enchiladas were disappointed. The chicken was tough and it seemed like the green gravy was the only part that was warm at serving time. We sent our plates back to be heated and the plates came back heated but the inside of the enchiladas were still cool. Not sure about the waitstaff though, it seems like they aren't supervised and they tend to not give great service to all their customers.
