We come here with the family all the time. We love the service here. It's always friendly and our food is always delicious. I've never ordered something I didn't like. My kids love the deep fried gyoza, the sacramento roll, and the miso soup. My husband and I love the kakugan Nachos, the pepperfin, the princess roll, the lemon drop roll, and the mixed tempura plate. (You can never go wrong with tempura). I Door Dashed lunch today from Sushi Kakogan. This was my first experience with this restaurant. The portions delivered were generous and the packaging was first rate. Prices were competitive. My order consisted of a Roll, Nigiri, Shrimp and Edamame. The roll I selected was the Gilroy Garlic (raw). It came with deep fried shrimp tempura, snow crab, avocado, salmon, tobiko with sauce. It was good but not much shrimp or salmon. My Shrimp Tempura was disappointing. It looked great but it was almost nothing but tempura ... hard to find any shrimp. The Salmon Nigiri was fantastic. Was in town for a wedding and checked out this Japanese place, and it was decent overall. The restaurant was clean, and we went with the bento boxes. They came with soup, salad, rice, and two choices. I got the chicken teriyaki and grilled salmon. Both tasted good, but the portions were smaller than what I'd usually get elsewhere. One downside was the limited sushi options, especially for salmon lovers. I also got the Daniel's roll which comes with smoked salmon but I did not enjoy this. Also, the two guys behind the sushi bar were shouting a bit. Maybe that's just their style, but it threw me off a little. The two servers were attentive and kind. Salmon sashimi (sake; orange sashimi) was cut into squares, which was different than the other sashimi cuts. To be fair though, I seem to have a preference for salmon, escolar, and hamachi over ahi and maguro. I can only think of one restaurant where I'd order ahi! The lava bites were fried and I think filled with cream cheese. I got the omakase nigiri and sashimi combo. Some of my other friends got omakase rolls and other things. Each roll was unique to their tastes and they all enjoyed it. The fish was fairly fresh and service was ok. Many of the rolls I saw had a ton of sauce which, personally I'm not a fan of. I like being able to taste the fish so I'm glad I got the sashimi and nigiri combo. The waitress however did not explain what type of fish was on it which I would have liked. We are picky with sushi/fish having lived in japan for 8 years and the rolls overall didn't quite hit the spot. Well.....underwhelmed. I have been here twice, and both times the experience has been bleh. IMHO, the sushi is fine, but the reality is supermarket sushi is a better value. Here is what happened... We had tempura to start and it seemed like the batter had exploded into little balls that were sparsely coating the vegetables. The shrimp looked like a ball of tempura, and oddly resembled a hush puppy. The sushi was drowned (pardon the pun, drowning a fish) in sauce. Normally, I enjoy the sauce with sushi, but in general it should not be the centerpiece. Finally, the roll was warm. Not my favorite temperature. For approximately $14 a roll, not a great value or experience. On the plus side, our server was great.
