New owners at Pelican's Roost. Aside from the regular fish and chips etc, they also have Korean food. My dad and I tried their Bibimbap (it's often spelled this way, but should be spelled as it's pronounced, "Bibimbop" with an O, that rhymes with pop). Well, let me tell you - I wasn't prepared for what was coming ! All of a sudden, two huge stone bowls filled with rice and toppings appeared. And the most impressive part was the loud, sizzling noise coming from it ! Warning: The stone bowls have been heated to a very high degree of heat. Do Not - I repeat - Do Not Touch the Stone Bowl ! Bibimbop (yes, I'm gonna spell it this way here) translates to mixed rice in english. And that's what you do, with all the ingredients, along with the Gochujang (sweet, savory, and slightly spicy pepper paste) that comes in a small glass bowl. The "jang" in Gochujang is also pronounced more like "jong". Anyhow, the Bibimbop served in the hot stone bowl, is called Dolsot Bibimbop. By using the stone bowl, it creates a crispy, crunchy layer of rice at the bottom. And koreans have a name for that too, haha... It's called Nurungji. I'm not sure, if you're suppose to mix Nurungji with the soft rice. Or, just eat it as is, at the end. For some reason, I didn't have nurungji in mine, my dad did. Was it because, I mixed mine up quickly, as soon as it arrived, haha... Y'all gotta come by and try it for yourself. It might be a bit more expensive, than the regular Bibimbop. But, in my opinion, well worth it ! They also have other korean dishes, along with favorite street foods like Kimbop (korean version of sushi rolls), and Tteokbokki (a very thick rice pasta, with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce). As for the interior, the restaurant goes back, at least to the 1950's. It has a quaint, diner like feel, with long bar stool seating in the back, and high wooden seating booth areas, along the sides. And if you prefer seating with more natural light, there's an area up front too, that's partitioned off. Beyond the bar stools, in the back, there's also an old, wooden phone booth. From what decade ? Perhaps from 1940's. Outside, beneath the Pelican's Roost Fish & Chips sign, you'll see written - Koffee Kup Restaurant. I've heard, that was the origin of this restaurant. Anyhow, according to my dad, they have good coffee here. So, come by and try out this place - either for fish & chips, korean food, coffee, etc... They're open from 11 - 8 daily, except Sundays. They're located on Lincoln Way. In my opinion, Pelican's Roost is actually located on High St. Lincoln Way is split in half by High St. So, it's a little tricky getting there. For parking, you can park on the main streets. But, there's designated parking spaces, in the back as well. ps Bob Hope and his family ate here in the 50's :) read more

I am utterly baffled by the bad reviews for this place's food. I really liked the clam chowder, thick and tasty broth with lots of big and very tender clams, plus plenty of onion and celery; the potato was all down at the bottom of the bowl. And the fish, medium sized, had a light breading, also first-rate. It's true, as some note, that the one server is also busy watching over her tiny granddaughter, but I did not feel neglected as a customer, and having a small meal I was in and out in no more than 20 minutes. read more

This is a sit down restaurant....I think? :) They have paper menus on the tables like a QSR, but the owner takes your order and brings you your food. We were "greeted" by an adorable toddler, who, in his toddler language, did manage a "Hi" greeting. There were pictures of Auburn covering the walls I do enjoy family restaurants. Standard fish and chips type place, but this reminds me of the southern California mom and poo shops that have random other foods, too (i.e. Teriyaki beef over rice, cheeseburgers etc...but we stuck with the classics). The food took a little longer then expected to arrive, but I believe it's due to the freshness and quality. My BIG pieces of fish came out hot, crispy, flaky, and delicious. I'm not a huge French fry fan, but even they were quite tasty. My wife enjoyed her prawn and fish combo, but beware the portion sizes....even though it was scrumptious and we were hungry, I left about a third of my food behind. This one used to be one of my grandpa's favorite places. We stopped in today for fish and chips. I had the prawn platter and clam chowder. We asked for bread and coleslaw. Never got the bread. Eventually we asked again for coleslaw and she brought it. I hate to be negative on what seems like a mom and pop restaurant, but the food was not good. I didn't finish my food because it was just greasy flavorless and not fresh. Maybe that used to be a really good restaurant, but something's gone downhill. We were the only ones in there when we came in at 6:30 PM. One other group came in and that was all. The decor is dated and not any retro cool way just in a dusty needs to be updated way. I'm still on my little fish and chips kick and decided to give this place on Auburn a try. It's not exactly right off the 80 freeway, you'll have to drive into town a little. Thank god for GPS! As you get into the "downtown" look for the big clock tower, the fish and chips place is just across the street. Parking looks to be street parking, so you might have to drive around a bit to find parking, especially on a busy weekend. The shop is pleasant inside and I order a 3 piece fish and chips. It comes out all hot and too hot to handle with my bare hands. After cooling a little I take my first bite. Crisp on the outside and cooked perfect with white fish inside. It could use a little salt, but that's just me. I liked the food here and the prices are about the same as the rest of the fish and chips places, but it's just not as convenient right off the freeway with a strip mall parking lot, but I guess that's part of the charm of downtown Auburn here. Come on in, you won't regret it. It's an old relic of auburn with a very old fashioned feel. It's not a fake old fashioned view as well, most items inside are collectibles. The fish was exactly what you are expecting and wanting from fish and chips. Crisp on the outside, hot on the inside, good flavor. The fries were meh. So so so super good!! Anchor Fish & Chips has been at this location for a very long time. It is a cozy dine in restaurant, with an outdoor closed off patio and relaxing decor that is very eye catching! They have booths and tables available to sit at while you dine in or wait for your to go order. On this day, we decided to dine in. My friend has been telling me how good this place is and I was excited to find a good fish & chips place. As we sat, a woman brought us paper menus and took our order. Since it wasn't busy, our order only took about 10 minutes. I ordered a cup of clam chowder and it arrived before lunch, which was nice. Needed a little bit of salt, but was tasty. My friend got a meduim fish & chips, which comes with 3 pieces of fish & chips and I got the fish & clams, which is 2 pieces of fish with a handful of clams. Everything is made to order. The taste was spot on for me. The fish was hot and juicy with the perfect crunchy exterior served with tarter sauce. The clams came with cocktail sauce. We drove 30 minutes from Roseville just to try this place, thinking we'd get some good fish and chips. We arrived at 7:15 PM, a full 15 minutes before closing, only to be immediately turned away by a woman at the counter who told us they were closing soon and asked us to leave. Seriously? A restaurant that doesn't look busy turning away paying customers? That's just terrible business. Honestly, in hindsight, I was kind of relieved. The place was completely empty, and as soon as we stepped inside, we were hit with a strong, unpleasant smell--not exactly the most welcoming atmosphere. It certainly didn't inspire confidence in the food quality. We ended up walking up the street to Lubia, a pizza place, and what a difference! They were happy to see us, the food was fantastic, and the whole experience was welcoming and enjoyable. That's how a restaurant should treat customers. As for this fish and chips spot? Ordered the catfish and chips - quite underwhelming the fish was super crispy but breading had no seasoning or flavor, the fries were hot and fresh but they had no salt on them. Are you avoiding chain restaurants, and do you prefer to dine at a "mom and pop" restaurant? If you're looking to enjoy a delicious plate of London-style fish and chips, seafood and more, tucked away in downtown Auburn, CA is a "hidden jewel" of a restaurant, Pelican's Roost Fish and Chips..." It takes longer to say the full name of the restaurant, Pelican's Roost Fish and Chips Koffee Kup Restaurant, than it does to walk by the store front. The diner is located in the quaint Sierra Nevada foothill city of Auburn, in a very vintage store. Parking is on the street, and you just may get to utilize your parallel-parking skills... As you enter, you'll be immediately transported to the 1940's, as the decor of the dining room is as "retro" as it gets. I was struck by the fact that NOTHING in the dining room appeared to be 2020, as the dining room looked like a set from a classic movie. We're talking "classic," including period lighting, vinyl booths, polished wood furniture, carved, painted paneling, striped wall paper, and not a computer in sight! From the "Seaside Specialties" section of the menu, I went with "Fish and Chips Medium," which is three pieces of Alaskan cod, along with an order of chips. Fish and chips, in the style of London! "Medium" refers to the fact that I ordered three pieces of fish - "Small" includes two pieces - as I wanted a piece of fish to take home, and enjoy later in the evening. The foundation of the meal was the fish, and Pelican's Roost uses fresh, Alaskan cod, which marks the standard for great fried fish. Each piece of fish was seasoned, battered, and deep fried to a golden brown. The fish-to-batter ratio was just right, as the batter did not overwhelm the fish, and when you bit into a piece of fish, you were rewarded with a "crunch" from the batter, along with the tender, juicy white fish, inside the perfectly crisp batter. Great fish, except for a few minor details... I did notice the fish was on the greasy side, as when I picked up a piece of fish, a few drops of oil dripped on to my plate. Also, the fish could have used additional seasoning, and less salt, as it was a bit too salty for me. I'm talking about small annoyances, and this is just my personal taste. The chips, or fries, were deep fried to a light, golden brown on the outside, and juicy white and tender inside. They were basically "standard" fries, delicious, but nothing out of the ordinary. I prefer thicker, "steak style" fries, but that's just my personal preference. The fries were perfect, and they complimented the fish, and made for a wonderful side dish. Here's where the meal got really interesting: Tartar sauce. What? Yes... I don't know what recipe Pelican's Roost uses for their tartar sauce, but I can truly say this was the BEST tartar sauce that I've ever eaten! From the looks of it, the sauce looked like something that was poured out of a jar, but looks can be deceiving, as this tartar sauce puts any other tartar sauce, during my 60+ years of enjoying fish and chips, to shame. Come for the fish... enjoy the tartar sauce!
