Tulsi is an example of a restaurant doing everything right. The location is convenient. The atmosphere is relaxing and beautiful. You are greeted graciously and treated with the utmost professionalism at every step along the way. The papadum appetizer and sauces they bring to the table is just as enjoyable as the naan and entrees you'll likely be receiving later. My party of three order the naan basket which compiles your choice of three different naan. We chose garlic, garlic chili, and an onion kulcha. This is my third time eating Tulsi, only my second trip in to the restaurant but after today I'm going to plan to be here more often. I've tried various dishes containing chicken, lamb, seafood, or vegetables and have been entirely pleased with then all. We were seated in a booth by the window which was romantic because it was raining. We ordered our appetizer and entrees right away. I had to add salt to two of the dishes. The one downside was we got takeout and while well packaged, we were staying at a hotel and it came without silverware or plates and the rice and meat were packaged separately. We ended up having to buy paper plates and utensils because we didn't realize it till we got back to our hotel. The naan was just ok but everything else was great. I got the mango chicken curry and it was delicious. My husband got the chicken curry and really liked the sauce. Like others, I enjoy the idea of making your own dish by picking your protein (or vegetable) and sauce. It's so tempting to repeatedly go back and chose every type of combination. I chose the curry sauce and selected medium heat. The sauce was so delicious that it was tempting just to drink. The chicken was cooked so well and was tender and isn't overcooked. I also enjoyed dipping the steamed broccoli into the curry sauce to savor every taste of it. Service was wonderful and very attentive. If you're ever in Richmond, immediately head over to Carytown, which is past VCU and after the streets fan out. It's a lively stretch of restaurants and bars. Tulsi is an excellent Indian restaurant in this fun neediness that clearly executes its flavors and spices exceedingly well. It was definitely the best food that we had on our business trip. The veg. appetizers were great with a mix of big and flaky samosas, crispy pakora fritters, and potato croquettes. The non-veg. appetizers were a tasty assortment of chicken, lamb, and shrimp. They all went well with the mint and tamarind chutneys. For the entrees, we shared a lamb vindaloo at a spice level they call "Indian Hot", which is just below "Cobra Hot" but still causes you to sweat a bit and your breathing to accelerate. The lamb was tender. There was a sweet chicken korma that had cashews, almonds, cardamom, and cream. The highlight of the meal was the tandoori shrimp that was roasted in a tandoor oven and coated with a buttery and tangy masala sauce. The flavors here are bright and clear, and you can taste all the different spices. The sauces and curries are rich and have a pleasant consistency. The naan is plump and pillowy, and perfect for picking up all the curry flavors. Overall, great execution of the dishes. This place deserves 4.5 stars. One more thing. The Sweet Kulcha was interesting. It is a naan stuffed with nuts, raisins, coconut, and cherries. read more

I want to start by saying Indian food is my favorite food and I eat it a lotttt! I ordered the butter chicken and I didn't love it. The chicken was dry and I prefer a creamier/thicker sauce. The three others at my table ordered vegetarian dishes and they all loved them. Even though I didn't love the dish I got, I loved everything else. The atmosphere was great. Overall a great Indian spot for the craving. Made a reservation ahead of time but honestly didn't need it. The staff were very attentive and nice. The food was exceptional. The only thing I wish I had was slightly bigger portions for the price but my tummy thanks the portion sizes. I decided to order takeout from Tulsi after reading so many glowing reviews on Yelp and I was not disappointed! I ordered their vegetarian sampler and their bread basket. For the bread basket, I ended up getting bhatura, aloo kulcha, and onion, methi (fenugreek), and paneer kulcha. My boyfriend and I each got an order of malai kofta. This ended up being so much food and we had leftovers for days. Also, everything we ordered was so yummy and fresh. This is my favorite Indian food spot that I've tried in Richmond so far. You can tell that the ingredients are SUPER fresh as it comes through in their flavors. Every curry I've gotten has been super flavorful, and their garlic naan is a must order as it's SUPER tasty. First the veggie samoas were AMAZING. Must try. The rice portion for one entree is insane. I think Tulsi rice is better than Lemon. I was a bit disappointed in the spice level for the chicken tikka masala so if you like spice I would suggest going higher than spicy( unless it was just that day it wasn't spicy). They have doors that can open two ways, so all you need to do is push open without the need to touch handles. The inside is very clean and they have a good system for order pickup where you wait behind a long table--you can't go around it. So you are def 6feet away from them at all times. They bring out the order to the table, you sign, and leave with your order. They have an online menu and you can either us delivery services or call to do take out like I did. I ordered basic tofu curry--medium. It had a good sting but just enough and not too much. I added some naan bread. For the one order, I have enough for a second plate the next day. Very tasty curry with a few vegetables in the sauce but not many (I tasted eggplant and onions). The tofu was soft on inside a semi crispy exterior, and well cooked. I would return. read more

We stopped in on a whim on Wednesday night and I would say they were moderately busy. Parking is on street in Carytown. We were quickly seat but it took about 10 or more for a waiter to come by. The waiter was very nice when he did come and took our order. We got a samosa to start with and it was very good. It had a really nice spice level and packed in great flavor. We also got the naan basket so we could try the cheese naan, the basil naan and the garlic naan. They were all quite good but the garlic naan was best. When the waiter brought out our food, it apparently wasn't right so he disappeared with it for a few minutes while we waited with the rice. He came back though and the order was right. I'm glad he realized it! I got the chicken masala and medium-hot heat. I picked well because it was closer to what I thhink medium heat is. My husband got tofu curry and mild. I tried it and while it was good, he really should have gotten it medium or medium-hot heat. He said it was a little bland. I liked my food a lot and I would come back. Before our orders came out we recieved basically the free bread of an italian restraunt.. if you've seen my reviews before you know that free bread in a restraunt makes it automatically 5 stars, those are the best kinds of restraunts. Ok so this wasnt bread exactly, it was like a cracker that came with 3 sauces. Not sure what they were... I think one was sweet bbq like sauce, chimichurry, and mango salsa maybe? The entree portions were pretty big. The indian hot butter chicken was not really all that hot... the hot classic curry though... my mouth was on fire for about an hour and this is where I would like to come in and personally thank the man that was pouring water, you saved me!! The chicken was tender and juicy - Combination Tandoori: My boyfriend got an assortment of proteins (chicken, steak, shrimp, salmon) on a hot sizzling plate with onions and peppers. The meat was perfect, and if you wanted to leave it on the plate longer, it could get a nice char. This came with a side of masala sauce as well - Bread basket: your choice of 3 different naans; I'm a carb lover, so this was a dream come true. We got the garlic, basil, and aloo (potato filled) naan All this came with a side of rice, which they said if we wanted more to just ask! The thing that I loved the most was the service here. New Indian in Richmond did not disappoint! Food was great, all meats were well cooked and the spices were a delight. We got the gobi manchurian to start which was slightly spicy and tangy, a great combo. Next we got a Tandoori combo platter that had lamb, chicken, salmon, and shrimp. All the meats were not too dry but well cooked, and seasoned well. Finally for the main entree we got the chicken masala (basically chicken tikka masala) which was not too spicy and had the right buttery flavor, with a side of naan (we got the variety basket, and we got garlic, aloo (potato), and onion kulcha). We got medium spice level on everything, and I will def be going back and asking for more heat. Pros: Ambiance - large space with nice booths and tables, not too busy Service - everyone is so nice!
