My friends and I wandered into this bar on new year's eve after having indian food for dinner. We were looking for a chill place with no cover or overpriced drinks for the night. This place wasn't too packed and had a nice cozy vibe. Friendly staff. The music was a nice mix of 80s, 90s and new music. They have a really great selection of beers on tap. They handed out fun new year's party favors and champagne toast. They had the countdown live on tv. This was the exact experience we were looking for this year. This bar is so convenient and laid out well for a group gathering. I like that there's a lot of space and I especially like the charming back area with a fireplace (though it can get very warm when there's a crowd in there). It was pretty easy to coordinate a large work happy hour via email and pre-order apps for the group. It was nice that there were no bar minimums and that there are a couple of nice little nooks to achieve a somewhat private feel even when the place is packed. However, I have to say I was really disappointed on the day of the happy hour. The service was really friendly and they were ready for us when we got there. But the large amounts of food I ordered came out so late that most of the party had left before the majority of the platters had even started coming out. I asked them several times about the status, and even if I could reduce my order since the party was about half the size before everything arrived. They assured me it was on its way out but then kept us waiting and waiting. When the stuff did come out, much of it was definitely not up to par. The thing that sticks out in my mind most was the mozzarella sticks - it was somehow soggy on the outside and hard cheese on the inside: basically the opposite of how you'd like your mozz sticks to be. It seems like someone dumped a pile of frozen Costco sticks on a dish and stuck them in the microwave. Pretty gross! Then again, it was pretty easy to get drinks so people weren't too disgruntled about the disappointing food. As the person paying for the food, however, I wondered what the point was of spending the time and money to pre-order when it was so slow and so untasty. I'd recommend going in for a normal happy hour and grabbing some drinks and maybe even some food, but I'd urge you to reconsider if you're looking for a spot to provide a lot of sustenance for a larger group. read more

I like it! Simple, solid bar in the Flatiron district. Strong gin & tonic, decent tap list, average drink prices and low key vibe. Like the bar, hate the food. I tried three different times just to make sure! The spinach artichoke dip was so greasy it was inedible, which is a feat because I have loved all spinach dips I've ever came across... the BLT was disappointing as well. Not enough bacon and wilted lettuce, plus bread that I had to fight to bite into. Gross. The mac and cheese was another let down! It was too smoky from the chorizo, I couldn't even taste cheese. Turnmill is a very nice neighborhood bar. The interior is beautiful with high ceilings, old industrial vibes and dim atmospheric lighting. Very good date spot because it is intimate and moody under candlelight. It's also a good spot to hang out with friends to get a drink because they have tvs playing sports. It's a perfect blend between a hangout spot and a more upscale intimate spot. This bar has class, is not pretentious, and drinks are cheap/standard price. The only negative was I walked past the bar on a Friday night and a dj was blasting bad party music to an empty bar. It was awkward and did not fit with the bar's vibe. read more

Best bar to book a birthday or party with a large group. I had my 28 th birthday celebration - looking for a chill place with some good music to dance to but thats not clubbish and this was the perfect place. Not too crowded and had a dj in the front. The manager was so helpful when booking my event. He reserved the front space of the bar for our party and was so accommodating. Yelp suggested this place should have a good happy hour during the week. Took a long hike out of the way to check it out and found this to be one of the loneliest places I saw during my entire trip in NY. I should have also taken notice that all the photos added to Yelp aren't from different customers, just the same photos of the interior over and over. Red flag. I wasn't paying attention. Not the place I was expecting, nor a place I would have gone so far out of the way to check out. I wouldn't suggest looking for happy hour deals in NYC if you prefer well made cocktails. I came to Turnmill on Sunday for football at around 1:00pm. It wasn't crowded at all at that hour so it was nice. I was a little disappointed that they refused to change any of the TV's and our game was on one TV in the corner with a glare on the screen. Eventually the glare went away and a table opened up which would allow us to see the screen. Shout out to our waitress Amy-she was excellent! She was attentive, let us know the specials immediately, filled our water often, even fixed a minor screw up in the kitchen in a huge way. Her attitude was positive and really made our experience great. Also.... the DJ on the weekends (we went Friday night too) is the best. Great throwbacks, but expect to be surrounded by a lot of drunk people. read more

I was pretty disappointed by this place the last time I went. The wine was meh, which I expect, but the Bronx ale can came out warm, and when my counterpart asked for a cold glass, they gave him a room temp. glass. The real problem was the food though. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and it came with a ton of melted cheese that was nowhere mentioned on the menu. This obviously is a huge issue if someone has a food allergy -- they really need to list cheese in the menu description. When it was returned sans cheese, the small piece of chicken was underwhelming. My counterpart's sandwich came out without the requested bacon, and both of us also received the wrong side. The waitstaff was very nice if a bit unexperienced and tried to make up for the kitchen errors. I really hope they get their food and drink in order. I like the ambiance, but the overall experience was seriously under par. read more

The bartenders are always friendly and great at recognizing repeat customers. Full bar, strong drinks and great beers why would you not be here? Fridays and Saturdays there are djs with no cover so it is great to dance and have some great craft beers on tap, along with beers that are commonly known. I love this place. Clearly the waitress didn't give a single fuck about her job. One beer we ordered was told they didn't have, then she came out with it. Then another beer we ordered we were also told they didn't have. Soda was flat. I asked if the chili had any chicken or beef stock in it. When I was told no, I ordered it without cheese. My boyfriend's food came out before mine or my sisters. After waiting for 15 minutes, I asked the waitress if she could check on our food. 10 minutes later they bring out our food. They brought me a phili cheese steak sandwich with no cheese. Needless to say, I didn't order anything. read more

While planning the party Tom, the manager of the bar was extremely helpful and attentive throughout the planning process making sure to always email me back. I've only come here on the quieter nights (i.e. a weeknight or Sunday night), and while this is a welcome addition to the neighborhood - outside of venturing over to Third Avenue, this is one of the few solid bars that is between Park and Lex in the mid-20's - it's a relatively average place, even though a couple places have cycled through the location before Turnmill settled in. The first noticeable thing is that the lighting is way too low; the fact that I have to turn on the flashlight app on my phone is a pretty good indication that the retro-style lighting fixtures are not doing the job. Additionally, I wasn't impressed when I asked for the drinks menu and pointed to listing on the wall (again, not easy to see in the lighting, and too small to see from anywhere but certain spots when you're seated). The bartenders - who also appear to double as waiters - don't seem terribly enthusiastic about providing decent service either. And the bathroom - well, it almost feels like they converted a gym shower into a space for the urinals. As for the food and drink - there's a solid array of beers, either on tap or in bottles, but the food is nothing remarkable. The chili is pretty expensive as an entree ($14) given it is served in an appetizer-sized bowl, and the flavor is nothing remarkable - it's pretty much your standard chili, although the added avocados are appreciated. We also ordered the chips and guacamole, which is stupendously overpriced at $12, especially considering the small serving amount you get (you'll take down maybe half the chips before you run out of guacamole). In short - the drink selection is decent, but everything else is lacking, and the decor is disappointing, mainly because there is not enough light to see ANYTHING. It might explain why Turnmill seems empty all the time, even though there is decent promise here. read more

Had our co-ed "baby shower" here and it was perfect! We reserved the backroom which is great for a private party. It was during football season so the two tvs were exactly what we needed and if it's during the winter, they have a fireplace too. Working with management to plan our event was super easy and they don't require any type of minimum like a lot of other places do. Where this place fell short for me (granted this was my first visit, would come back) was the food. We ordered a bunch of appetizers and was not that impressed with what came to the table. i went in with my gf for a quick drink but as i entered (sat night) the place smelled like old bacon or greasy oil fried cheese fries..ughh!! kind of a turnoff ! Not sure i wanted to have a drink there..especially not food. place is more college students..freshers and too much of the frat club scene not too appealing to many im sure. place does not have a great mix of people. music was okay - dingy and dark even for a bar- def felt divey. We chose Turnmill for our annual holiday party, which is typically a fun night all around. We rented the front half of the bar for 100+ people, but ended up taking over about 3/4 of the bar because our group was so large. When it came time to give awards, the manager adamantly would not turn down the music (he said we did not tell him we were giving awards, which was not true). Eventually he did turn down the music after much debate, and then in the middle of our president's speech, he cranked it back up because he said the speech was going too long. Our group was disappointed at how rude and unprofessional the manager was. If you're thinking of having a party or happy hour here, I would avoid it. Give business to bars who deserve it. read more

Came here on a Tuesday night when it was less crowded, making it a good spot to go with friends to chat and have a drink. We sat around a barrel and the music wasn't too loud as it was before when I visited so I had a better experience this time. Rarely review but had to. I walked in and was greeted by a guy behind me yelling "hey buddy" like I just stole something. Turns out it was the bouncer who was hard to notice because he was too busy talking on his cell phone. He asked for my ID. I think hey no problem (and why are you treating me like a criminal). He orders me to take it out of my wallet (while still taking to a friend on the phone). I've owned bars and if this is the type of person representing out front it's not a place I want to be. So, I wish I could review the bar and food but I turned around and decided to take my business elsewhere. Too bad because I work in the area and thought this would be a good place for a happy hour. We had an extreme unpleasant experience at this Bar last evening. There were six of us out to celebrate my Youngest son's birthday. 5 of us sat immediately and my oldest son, was outside on a business call. When he came back, the waitress was not readily available to serve him a drink, as we already had ours, so he went to the back bar to get himself a drink. He came back with his drink and 3 shots for a few people at the table. The birthday boy knocked his over by accident and the oldest went to replace it. A Half hour later, he returned to the back bar to replenish a few drinks, as our waitress, again, was no place to be found. The bartender told him that he was "told" that he had to cut him off because he had too much. Then the manager came and told him the same thing. This was absolutely ridiculous. He had one at dinner, one here and a shot. He was anything but drunk and the manager, once she realized it, stuck her heels in deeper and refused us more drinks. The youngest person in our party was 31 years old and the oldest 65. A family of professionals, that certainly knows what they are doing. It was a disgusting experience and ruined our entire evening. Overall a great sports bar. Casual atmosphere. Amazing chicken fingers. Comfortable tables. Music that isn't too loud to talk but still fun. Good drinks and friendly bartenders. Came in for a quick bite before my boyfriend and I went to sign our new lease. We chose Turnmill because we were walking down Park Ave and this seemed like the only close sports bar where we could catch the football game for an hour. I was starving so I was hoping to have a cheeseburger (not uncommon for a sports bar). Surprisingly there were no burgers unless you count the veggie burger (which, sorry, but I don't). I ended up getting the soft pretzel which I stupidly assumed would come with seasoning on it or a cheddar dip which is common with most pretzel appetizers. Sadly it was very plain with salt and a beer mustard (my fault because I wasn't paying attention to the menu) but it left me disappointed and the mustard had way too much horseradish for my own taste. My boyfriend got waffle chips (again, his fault) but I think he expected them to be closer to fries but they were actual potato chips with ketchup. They did have a good beer can/shot deal going on. It's a really small menu and I'm sure it's great to watch a game if you want something on the menu but overall I was just disappointed. I would rather go elsewhere. Also, we were sitting close to the door so the waitress asked for a card to "start a tab" even though we weren't drinking. I figured at the end she would give us the option to pay cash but she just swiped the card before even giving us the check. read more

Very cool atmosphere. Came with a bunch of friends and the bar and table area was large enough. The backroom potential is high.

The space is really nice, especially the private back area that's great for parties or for hosting special events. The manager was great at helping to set up our party. The space and the bar itself has a really positive, chill and cool vibe. The only thing that lacked for us was that our server was barely around. We appreciated that they gave us space but the server never seemed to be around when we needed to order drinks or food. When the server finally reappeared after being MIA for a couple of hours, we were finally able to put in our food order - only to be told the kitchen had closed half an hour ago. It would have been nice if our server mentioned that. Anyway, I think if they put some more effort into the service I think this could be a great spot just to hang with a couple of friends at the main bar or host a big event with about 30 of your friends in the back bar. read more

Allagash White on tap, and enormous soft pretzels. Dont need much else. Probably the best soft pretzel I have found in the city. Giant (served on a hook), crisp outside, doughy middle. And the spicy mustard is insane. I DO NOT like the fact that they let people smoke right at the front porch area though. So if you are sensitive to smoke sitting by the front might be a downer. They should really rethink that as it ruins the experience otherwise I would have rated higher. read more
