If you're familiar with the Ls, you already know what to expect when it comes to the area surrounding this family-owned restaurant which is not the best. If you're driving here, be sure not to leave anything in your car. The last time I visited was back in 2018 or 2019. Walking in, the space is very small, seating a maximum of about 20-24 people. My boyfriend and I ordered the BBH and Pho Tai. Both noodle soups had a noticeably sweet undertone in the broth, which isn't what we're used to. My boyfriend wasn't a fan of his Pho Tai. It lacked that rich, beefy depth that makes a good bowl of pho satisfying. He said that if he weren't so hungry, he probably wouldn't have finished it. As for my BBH, I felt the same way that it was missing that bold savory spicy kick. The sweetness was interesting and different, but not something I'd find myself craving. This restaurant specializes in Hue cuisine, and, in my humble opinion, Hue cuisine is the best kind of Vietnamese food. There's a lot of options on the menu, but I highly recommend you choose something from the top section where it says "Hue Specialty Dishes" or something to that effect. I ordered the Bun Oc which was yummy and came with a plate full of herbs. Vietnamese food always comes with a lot of herbs, and, if you don't get the herbs, then you should ask. The herbs bring all of the flavors in the dish together. Next time, I'll come back for the Bun Bo Hue which is probably one of the most well-known dishes from Hue. The only reason why I didn't order this dish is because my mom makes this at home and it's hard to beat mom's cooking, ya know? The meal was served with tea. I'm not sure what she put in the tea, but it's so very tasty. Can't wait to come back here to try all the other Hue items! P.S. Sometimes their front door is locked (for safety reasons), so just knock and someone will promptly unlock it for you. P.P.S. Next time my Vietnamese parents come to visit, I'll take them here. Friendly staff and service, not just the Asian grandmas that dump everything and leave. Bun Bo Hue small: Loaded with meat and they also do pig feet here! Actually ate the pork blood this time because it didn't have too much of an iron/blood taste to it. There was a sweet aftertaste to the broth which kind of threw me off but delicious none the less. Great service. Went here for some Bun Bo Hue and some other appetizers. The bun bo was coo, nothing crazy but gets the job done. The banh béo was good and so was the banh ướt. The nước chấm is sweet kind of like southern style. This place is basically in the tenderloin so I can't judge them for that. That environment is not their fault but don't be surprised. Usually the filling consists of ground meat (pork or chicken) with ear wood mushroom and others. This filling is like a cut up grilled pork (that you'd find in those rice platters), with nothing else, and crunchy garlic + some pork patty sprinkled on top. Maybe this is another version of it that I'm ignorant of. Even considering it as it's own dish, the taste is maybe mediocre at best...would not order again. Everything is reasonably priced for the quality and excellence of the food. Very authentic! The owners have been in the same location for 35 years. Bravo to the chefs! They were kind, generous, friendly, and really care about the happiness of their customers. We ordered the number one (a beef soup), a Vietnamese crepe aka Bánh xeo, and a mini crepes with squid and shrimp, aka Bánh khot. All were served with fresh vegetables, herbs and paired with a delicious fish sauce. Our meals also came with a complimentary mug of tea which was refilled. I personally enjoying this food as it brought back fond memories from my childhood. It represented the best time in Vietnam from the past. I will have to come back to taste other traditional dishes soon. If you are fun, and up for an adventure tasting the very traditional Vietnamese food, Tuyet Mai must be your destination! Stopped by for lunch. Nice, nice people. We were greeted with a tall glass of tea and an extensive menu. We shared shrimp and pork summer roles with a delicious and somewhat spicy dipping sauce. I had Bun Mam soup with noodles, shrimp, fish, squid-- delicious. My wife ordered what she thought would be a banh mi sandwich, but was delightfully surprised to get the equivalent of an open face sandwich with stewed beef cubes, salad and garnish with a sliced baguette on the side. Very filling and satisfying. If you are not in the Tenderloin, you can always order delivery. Food is quite good. Seems to be family owned. I've been on a Asian persuasion mission this past week, dining at Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai restaurants, and tonight Vietnamese called Tuyet Mai. After perusing Yelp I find Tuyet Mai with solid reviews and what stood out was "family owned" and "delicious foods". I was sold to cross the safety zone and enter into Tenderloin territory, if you know, you know, and yet where most authentic Vietnamese restaurants are located. Tuyet Mai it is! After zigzagging the hood I find Tuyet Mai on Hyde St. & O'Farrell St., a stones throw from an Adult Theater, Liquor Store, and derelict whatever that was, yet the location on Hyde was actually calm with a good vibe. I enter with a warm "Engrish" greeting and handed the menu. Jasmine tea is served. I decide on the dry vermicelli with spring rolls & bbq pork. I then ask the Mrs. on what does "meat roll" on another dish meant. Her response was "you try it" lol. Um ok. So she makes my dinner with added "mystery meat" lol. The Bun Cha Gio is served pretty quickly. And I notice after a few bites of the "mystery meat" that it's some sort of sausage sliced up. Pretty good actually. My dinner was delicious with a good ratio of meats, vegetables, and vermicelli. The fish sauce was on point and allowed the combination of foods to mingle well. The jasmine tea flowed nicely. In the end, I recommend Tuyet Mai to all. The only caution flag is my "mystery" bill. See many come to the Tenderloin to eat "cheap" Vietnamese food. I expected the same. And why I was charged an additional $3 is a mystery indeed. It most likely was for the "mystery" meat that I only had a question on but the Mrs. added it to my plate. Bun Bo Hue is very good - taste is very authentic - with sauce / salty. I rated it 5/5 (if you know how to eat Bun Bo Hue - Vietnamese spicy soup. I also tried "Bun Mam" - fermented/rotten fish noodle (I rated it 2/5) - the soup needs to enhance more "fermented/rotten" fish. Mi Quang: taste is above average to good. Best Banh Khot I've had in San Francisco. Typically have to go all the way to San Jose for good Vietnamese food especially dishes like banh Khot or Banh Xeo. Now I can go here for my fix. Doesn't come with the assortment of greens that I'm use to in San Jose but good enough to not have to make a 45 min trip. A lot of the other dishes were good as well. I use to frequent this restaurant all the time. This was my first time back in at least 5 years. The owners are still the same as before but the quality of food has gone to sh*t. I had a bun Bo hue and my wife had a pho dac biet. My bun Bo hue had very little flavor than before and my wife's fish had no pho smell or flavor what so ever. We had to ask for some ingredients to try to improve on the dish with no luck. They could tell my wife didn't like the food from all the extra ingredients she was pouring into her pho. By the end of the meal, my wife maybe took 5 bites before jus kicking it to the side in disgust. I wish the food was the same consistency as it was years ago. Word of advice, don't eat pho at a Vietnamese restaurant if you can't smell the pho aroma in the air. read more

Honestly the worst bun bo hue I ever had, one piece of beef rest are cheap fatty pork that made me want to puke, blank soup, soggy noodles, basically nothing was made right. I think this is the first time in my life I haven't finished a whole bowl of BBH. I can tolerate the pee smell given the location, but whatever the excuses are (Covid, inflation, business difficulties and whatnot), bad food is bad food for review purposes. I see the pictures from previous reviews years back and the difference in quality is night and day. Would not recommend anyone to come here while visiting sf, tons of other options in Chinatown instead. read more

Thé aroma was so intoxicating the drive home, I couldn't wait to open it I did a quick reheat for my BBH and I got mine without the pigs feet or blood. It was a lot of soup and meat, which is pretty good for my bucks. There was also an abundance of noodles as well, it felt like a large size! The broth is more beefy than it is spicy like some places does it, a bit on the sweet side if you will. I added a bit more shrimp paste to my broth to give it a bit more balance, but that's my preference! The meat could have been cooking while in the container but mine was just a bit too tough. Been coming here since I was a kid and always crave their BBH. Banh beo and banh bot loc are up there as well since no one really serves it in SF. Every time I think I've done a thorough sweep of all the decent Vietnamese restaurants in the Tenderloin, I find another one and this one is definitely just decent, no more, no less. It's family-run, which I like very much, and the space is modestly decorated. The food itself is not the predictable selection but central Vietnamese variations that originate from the town of Hue. Now believe it or not, I've been to Hue in my travels, but I can't for the life of me, remember anything that unique about the cuisine in that area except I did take a private cooking class in nearby Hoi An from a sassy, sharp-tongued chef named Miss Vi. I was folding that banana leaf with hospital corners, but I digress. I've walked past this tiny hole in the wall dozens of times but have never realized that there was authentic Vietnamese cuisine hiding behind these walls! I was coming home from the gym one day and walked down this street when the words "Banh Beo" popped out at me from the window display. Banh Beo? I haven't been able to find that anywhere in the city yet! Unfortunately, they don't have a vegetarian version of Banh Beo, but I noticed they have an enormous menu with over 100 items, and there is even an entire section that is vegetarian friendly! Some options that are featured for us veg heads include: -Pho Chay -Various Rice dishes-Sauteed tofu & vegetables, mushrooms, etc. -Hu Tieu Chay -Banh Xeo Chay (Crispy yellow crepe!) -Goi Cuon chay (Fresh Summer Rolls) There were a few more, but I can't remember right now. I opted for the Pho today. It was windy & cold so the warm broth would be perfect! Unfortunately, the guy heard "Pho Tai" instead and I was served a bowl of beef pho. When I mentioned the miscommunication, he immediately apologized and they whipped me up a vegetarian bowl instead without hesitation. The bowl of soup was fully loaded! Bok Choy, broccoli, fried tofu, cabbage, carrots! So many veggies! And of course, top it with mint, basil, bean sprouts, and jalapenos. It was a green soup machine. Yum! I've never had a bowl of pho that wasn't a generous serving. So obviously, I was stuffed by the end of it-despite the fact that it was all vegetables.
