The wait staff were superb, 5 plus stars for our waitress. The food was average. I took my son here for his 35 birthday. He is a foodie as well and has a high appreciation for excellent food. He was also disappointed. We had the Pommes which were very disappointing. Also had the turnips were hard and there was very little turnip. The pea soup was good. We both had the lobster and spaghetti which was good but nothing special. I had small pieces of lobster and my son had larger and more pieces. We skipped dessert. Maybe my standards are too high coming from NYC. I may give this restaurant one more try and try some other dishes.

However, Bûcheron, located in Kingfield, one of the most down-to-earth neighborhoods in Minneapolis, deserved all its accolades. We grabbed two seats at the small bar, and I was immediately wary. The woman behind the bar, while professional, was ice cold. She warmed up later, but what registered from her affect was that we weren't worthy of dining in this esteemed restaurant. It was off-putting, but she was friendlier later in the evening. I'm old, so that might be it too. Many younger people in the Twin Cities don't like old men. Bûcheron's space is small and homey, tying in well with the Kingfield neighborhood. It's cozy and unpretentious. I liked that. The food was scrumptious. Everything tasted wonderfully, and there wasn't even one miss. The menu changes constantly, so listing the dishes might be moot. However, the Pomme Dauphines, gazpacho soup, halibut, and sticky toffee cake made us sigh with pleasure. On a Monday night, the place was packed, but it empties early. That's typical in the Twin Cities. Late dining is not in vogue. However, Bûcheron is popular, so make reservations early. For the 12 months that we have lived in the Twin Cities, Bûcheron and Myrial provided our best meals. Bravo and Brava! Both were priced fairly, providing bang for your buck. I don't need cheap, but I yearn for great. Bûcheron provided great.

Our server, Freeman, was attentive and gave great recommendations. He was knowledgeable on the menu and spoke french! He was such a joy! We ordered the chicken liver smear which tasted sweet and salty. It was the perfect first course to start our meal. We then moved onto the cassoulet. We did not enjoy this, the duck confit base was a bit too heavily oiled for us so instead we ordered the steak frites and burger. We loved our second choices and were happy with those selections. Then, we ordered affogato for dessert. Meritage makes their ice cream homemade and it was a good ending to the meal. The restaurant was busy but voices did not carry. It was a beautiful dinner and I would recommend anyone who likes French cuisine to visit!

And obviously that was our big mistake. We sat for a long time as people were brought bread and their appetizers and meals. After about 30 minutes, we finally got about four tiny slices of cold bread and some butter tossed on our table. I ran out of water. About 45 minutes into this I went looking for a manager. What we figured out is that the server forgot to put our order in. We waited another 45 minutes for food. I asked to have a substantial discount on the bill considering it took over 1.5 hours for us to get our food. And I had ordered a simple salad and nothing else. We noticed other waiters glancing at our table. I mean, you would think somebody would notice us sitting there in the main traffic area. Just never being served until I asked what was going on. In the end, we got a 50% discount. But it was such a disheartening experience and felt so unwelcoming that I don't think we'll be back.

We arrived 5 minutes early for our 5:00pm reservation and were told we needed to wait outside because they were having a meeting (it was 94 degrees outside). We then waited until 5:03pm when we were finally let in (now we are sweating profusely). Btw, when we were walking up they had just let others in and they were seated when we entered. Bad start, but we were hopeful our meal would be great. We were seated at the bar (per our reservation) and were handed one menu for the two of us. Our primary server was the bartender, who was quite kind but was in a tough spot with the owner watching her every move and ridiculing her right in front of us. They had no greens on their limited menu so we asked if they had any sort of side salad, but were ignored. We also asked if the ribs came with a vegetable; the owner did not know and said she would check with the chef. She never returned with an answer. The soup was good, the rest was below average. We ordered the focaccia which came in a brown paper bag and stapled?? The rib plate contained 3 ribs (which were dry, not very big and had little sauce). The ribs came with wasabi mashed potatoes, but there was no wasabi flavor to be found. If you are going to have a limited menu with one item, it better be really good - it was not. The owner made it a habit of asking everyone how their food was and before you could answer she would answer "yummy?" for you. Not only annoying, but it was obvious she did not really want to know. We almost felt like our presence was an inconvenience to the owner. Needless to say, we will not be back, nor will our dozens of friends who will hear about our experience. It was very disappointing!!

We did the wine pairing with our 10 course experience and it was the BEST overall dining experience we have ever had anywhere! They only have 2 seatings an evening but even each seating is staggered so it's like you are having your own private tasting for your party. Each course was better than the previous course and every course was INCREDIBLE with outstanding flavors that were explained in great detail each time! It was such a memorable experience from the first course to the last course that you never wanted it to end. You also get the entire menu including the wine pairing in a nice note before you leave. It includes your various Sous Chefs and service directors you had the entire evening! This was an EXCEPTIONAL overall dining experience that everyone should try especially if you love, food and wine!!!! I can't wait to go back and experience a whole new menu for sure!

There is a lot to say about this restaurant, and most of it is very good. The ambiance had perfect energy. It felt lively, but never loud or overwhelming. It struck a really nice balance for a special night out. You could comfortably enjoy the experience and conversation. The service was exceptional. Not just friendly, but incredibly knowledgeable. Every course and every pairing was explained in detail, and the staff clearly knew their craft. Service - they absolutely delivered. We chose The W.C. Whitney Menu. I had the Premium Wine Pairing, which was excellent and very well done. My wife chose the Temperance Pairing since she does not drink alcohol. This was one of the few disappointments of the evening. Many of the drinks were designed to mimic the taste of cocktails and wine, while my wife does not care for the taste of alcoholic drinks. When it came to the food, there was a range. Some dishes were truly outstanding and worthy of Demi's reputation. Some were good but not exactly great. And honestly, a few were mediocre. With a tasting menu, you expect some variation, but at this level and at this price, mediocre does not cut it. Here's what it really comes down to. I would rate the experience itself 5-stars. But the cost of the evening did not come close to matching what was delivered. I was not looking for, or expecting value! We spent over $700 for the evening. Demi is very good. The service is exceptional. The ambiance is awesome. Much of the food is outstanding. But in my opinion, the overall experience did not justify the extremely high cost.

The young man at the counter offered me an extensive menu of regular coffees, espresso drinks and specialty drinks, all of which could be made hot or cold. They also have a variety of milk selections. Unfortunately, they were out of skim milk today, but he offered to tweak the amount when I told him that the main reason I usually had skim milk was to enhance the coffee flavor(and their coffee really tasted good). Additionally, he offered to make my drink in my personal cup which was great since I hate to use plastic whenever I can. This location is only a half block from United Hospital and all its various buildings and there is no good coffee within that entire complex. It's definitely worth getting a breath of fresh air and taking a block and a half stroll to have a great cup of Joe! By the way, although I tried hard not to look, their pastry case looked scrumptious, filled with homemade pies by the slice and other goodies. Since they are so close to the hospital it's really nice that they also have a lovely display of fresh cut flowers. Next time I'm down here I'm going to stop in for a meal. If the food is as good as the coffee I think I'll become a regular.
