I really wanted to like this place. It was my cheat day from eating healthy and so I was craving a burger. As a result, I knew that I wanted to go to a specialty location to make the experience worthwhile. I went up to the counter and asked them if they had sweet potato fries. They let me know that they did not serve sweet potato fries... first let down. However, I was still determined to enjoy my meal so I proceeded to order a black bean burger and regular fries. HELLOOOOOO Lubbock I dig this place, but like, something is missing. I can't pin what, so here's what they are doing right: 1. The atmosphere is perfect if you're trying to eat somewhere interesting, but you're wearing lululemon leggings and an old athletics department t shirt, and don't want to feel like an imposter somewhere nice. Which isn't to say this place is grubby, it's just casual. 2. The burger flavor options are so cool! Gruyere and funky mustards, and onions prepared interesting ways, etc. I am enthusiastically pleased. 3. The sweet tea, house root beer, and the shakes are BOMB. So good. Very highly recommended. I love root beer, and their house brews with fun flavor notes is so groovy. The shake flavor options are well curated and I feel like there's something for everyone. The sweet tea is perfectly Texas sweet. Approved. This is a great place to eat before going to a baseball game at Tech (or LCU, whatever) or after a yoga session (yes, burgers after yoga, I am who I am). Was really excited they had reopened and looked forward to having lunch on the patio but, thinking maybe I just came on an off day. I hitched my pup up to a table outside and went in to order. The sweet guy taking my order seemed to have a little trouble figuring the change but, I had over paid intending for the reminder to help feed the tip jar. No biggie. Just a heads up, if you would like a beer you need to make a second visit to the bar to order & pay there. They have a decent selection of drafts including a couple of local brews. The bartender was gracious as well and accommodating when I let him know that I would be visiting the restroom to wash my hands before I grabbed my Plains Amber and headed back outside. Here's where I started to question things... I arrived shortly after 11am which is when they open. There was already a backed up toilet, overflowing trash cans and trash EVERYWHERE in the ladies room. There's no way this could have happened in less than 30 minutes after opening so, guessing no one bothered to check the restrooms after closing the night before. Just made me wonder, if the restrooms are being cleaned thoroughly after closing, what else is being neglected? I ordered the millionaire burger, which was indicated as new on the menu, and potato cracklins. The menu said it was served open faced so I expected to need silverware to attack this bad boy. I looked for some at the self serve toppings station and discovered it was behind the pick up counter. What I did not anticipate was the extreme level of apathetic attitude from one of the girls behind the counter. She gave me an eye roll and wordlessly handed over the utensils because I had interrupted the conversation she was having with another employee. My sincerest apologies!! However, as she works there she should have anticipated my burger requiring a knife & fork and had them ready, or at the very least offered when I came to collect my trays. VERY off putting and unnecessary in my opinion. Was the food good? Meh. The fries were tasty and different from your standard French fry. They had a flavorful seasoning and were a nice mix of thick and chewy & thin and crispy. Found a hair in the bottom of the tray after I was about half way done eating though. Gross. The burger was as impressive looking as the menu described! Wagyu beef, bacon, garlic mushrooms, crispy onions, tasty sauces all together! Overall it was delicious but I wasn't a fan of the onions. I personally prefer crispy onion when the onions are well done. These were more like flash fried leaving the onions nearly raw and the batter not as crispy as expected. Ultimately this did not really take away from the overall finished product. Finally as I was sitting on the patio enjoying my meal a young male employee walked out the side door toward me and my canine companion. I didn't want to be rude so I cheerfully acknowledged him with a "hi, how are you doing?", He completely ignored me and proceeded to step over my dog and walk by through the other gate back into the restaurant. Wooowwww. So, I may be back. Probably not anytime soon though. I have had two reasonable visits at twisted root but was very disappointed today. We ordered the western burger and fries, the lady who took our order could've cared less to be friendly or speak to us. After waiting at least 20 minutes when it was slow at 2 in the afternoon we finally received our food. However not only were the fries cold, the burger and bacon was all cold. I am unsure if they forgot about ours or what happened. When I returned to ask the same girl for help she still seemed unable to speak and disrespectful to me just and turned around to find someone else who knew how to be helpful. They did offer to remake it but we did not feel like eating there after the cold bite. They gave us a full refund; however we will not be returning! read more

I came here for dinner with friends, got the wagyu burger, shared some fries, and got the Oreo and Amaretto milkshake. The burger was perfect, the fries were just okay, and at first I thought the milkshake would be way too watery (judging by when they poured it into the cup), but it turned out to be quite lovely. The amaretto was a lovely almond twist to the milkshake and it was a great way to wrap up my evening. Came in with my son he had the kids burger I had the Freshman 15. My burger was over cooked and tasted off. The fried egg was ok but the menu description said it included smashed fries and it only had 2 in the burger. It came with a one piece of lettuce and one slice of tomato and a very small portion of fries. For as much as they charged for their food portions should have been larger. They have rolls of paper towels for napkins the roll at our table was out so I asked our server for a new one . I waited patiently for this place to open, only to be disappointed by a mediocre burger. Food: We ordered a bacon, egg, cheese burger and a mushroom burger. Both burgers were extremely dry and lacked flavor. The menu boosts that all burgers are cooked medium with a pink strip. Both burgers were overdone. I got through about half of mine and had to call it quits. On a brighter note, the chili cheese fries were great! They were generous with the chili which was nice and meaty. Atmosphere: It was a fun atmosphere! We felt like we were back in Austin. Instead of order numbers, the restaurant uses fun names to call customers once your order is ready. This is a self service restaurant and everything went quickly. bottom line: Come for a drink and fries. Pass on the burger. For a $10 burger, I was really expecting more. My go-to is the big tex (cheddar, guac, chipotle sauce, onion strings) my husband loves the western (all I know is it has jalapeños). Their burgers are cooked perfectly to my taste. Not well done but not bleeding. The sweet potato chips are AMAZING! the fries aren't bad but nothing to rave about. You do have to pay extra for a side item (fries, etc). They have lots of fun things like homemade ranch, alcoholic milkshakes, game meat, flavored pickles, and flavored lemonade and rootbeer. Wish I had kept on going to the next burger joint! Atmosphere: it is a wide open, high-ceilinged building with benches and tables for seating. The line to order starts at the door and proceeds left. The menus are above the counter and can't be seen well while standing in line. There are printed menus once your reach the counter...but now you're standing there trying to read it while the server is talking to you about the different offerings...maybe put the menus further down the line. There is a large bar to the left side of the building right next to the windows. The music was very loud when I visited, so I can only assume it would get even louder if there were more customers. Staff: the staff was friendly and nice. Definitely have no complaint about them. Food: what a disappointment. For the amount of money I paid, that should have been the best burger I've ever had in my life....nope, it wasn't. I ordered a simple buffalo bacon cheeseburger with tomatoes and onions and a side of pork rinds. I was charged for almost every little thing that went onto the burger (just not the tomatoes and onions). The bacon strips I received were way overcooked and had the texture of jerky. The onions were a quarter sized piece of onion and I think they used roma tomatoes from the size of the tomato slice. The pork rinds tasted like they had been warmed up in a microwave and seasonings tossed on them. If you really want a hamburger, save your money and find a different place. There are other places where I can get a much better burger and fries and drinks for two people for the price I paid for one meal. read more

You can, however, get a burger and fries that taste the same just about anywhere in Lubbock sans the eccentric mixture of strange ingrediants and for 1/2 the cost. I hate the Guy Fierri tribute poster & refuse to Google to find out if he is affiliated with the chain in some way. Good thing they keep it hung by the potties... I like all the options on the menu. So far I have only had beef burgers, but I have seen buffalo, ostrich & kangaroo(if I'm not mistaken) as possibilities. Not sure how I feel about kangaroo, but that's because they are cute and cuddly looking little beasties & I feel bad. You HAVE to ask for veggies for your burger, which I approve of! Why waste the stuff as a garnish when that's all it will be used for. There are plenty of signs telling you this. Good selection for VeggieSaurus Rabbit Food eaters, or for folks that don't support Gluten in all its glory. Then you pick up your food & head to the pickle stand. We were told that the regular way the burgers where cooked was with a think pink line , so we asked for ours to be well done (just a personal preference). Anyways, our burgers were basically burnt, hard, super dry black patties. I understand what "well done" means and this was not it, this was basically burnt, hard and tasteless. The atmosphere is awesome, all other food and sides were awesome. My son had the burger the way it came and it was fully cooked with maybe the slightest ting of pink, maybe. There was also regular dill, spicy/sweet and bread/butter pickles for the picking. I ordered the Spicy Goat hamburger. I ironically got Amy Poehler as my order ID (funny as I've been told I remind people of her). The food came out fresh and hot. It had an ample amount of goat cheese and bacon. Have you ever eaten something that caused you to stop speaking and completely ignore the people at your table?! This is the place! The wife had the Kevin bacon which by the name alone must be great, and it was. If you are noise sensitive, or have a meat allergy or are generally a hipster or a vegan, avoid this place like the vegetable induced plague you will eventually gain from not eating meat like the human you are. I ate here for the first time last week and I must say, it's my favorite burger in town by a mile. I loved it in Dallas, and thankfully I liked the one here in Lubbock just as much. The Burger Lowdown: I am pretty much a carnivore. I really can't think of many things I would prefer over a great cheeseburger (except a steak ). What I really loved here was that their beef was juicy, not greasy like a lot of burger joints are. Cooked perfect, tasted perfect, I'll be back. I moved here five years ago from Dallas and this is the first time I've had such a good burger in Lubbock. The atmosphere is laid back, food was good and came out rather quickly. The manager came by to ask how our food was and if we enjoyed the restaurant. He spent several minutes talking about the establishment and their history which we enjoyed learning about. First time visit. Hamburgers came with lettuce and tomatoes, but no onions. Not sure if you had to specifically ask for them, could not find any information online or in the restaurant. The pickle bar was a mess and the dill pickle jar was almost empty and I was barely able to get the 4-5 that I wanted. I ordered the Vagabond because I wanted something a little healthier but I am not a vegan. As another reviewer noted the Vagabond immediately fell apart after the second bite. Even the bun disintegrated into small pieces. For a burger made from chickpea, black beans, brown rice, and quinoa it seemed to be made up of 90% rice which is probably why it doesn't hold its shape. There were a few scattered pieces of black beans and the quinoa was crunchy (meaning not cooked thoroughly). Only one slice of avocado was on top. Not really bad tasting, but I really didn't want a rice/bun bowl. Very disappointing. All the sides were fried and the salad options were $6 so skipped getting anything else. My wife order the Classic and onion rings. She said they were just OK, she likes onions, too. She also ordered a margarita but said it was overpowered by the lime flavor. read more

But the overhead menu was hard to read, but small hand ones weren't available until the front. But the staff was friendly and knowledgable. The atmosphere was really fun, great music and witty jokes. Are here before seeing a movie at Alamo. The people who work here *seem* to enjoy it, and that's always a plus in my book. I had the verde burger, which has green chiles, guacamole, and jack cheese. The flavor a went together nicely, but I'd say that the amount of guacamole they put on a burger for $1 is kind of small, but maybe I'm just greedy with guac. The service was fast, but for one person in my party, they called him up and then told him to wait and after that it took them another 5-10 minutes. The main thing I'd say they could improve on is how multiple burgers can come out at the same time for a table with multiple people paying separately. Overall, good burgers.
