Jazz is in a strip mall, but from the second you open the door it has a unique character. The place is a little noisy, but the staff is friendly and helpful. The menu has some fun and interesting choices, but only some of them have explanations. I don't care for paper menus. The stuffed zucchini is improperly named, but amazingly delicious. The ambiance was cool. It was like a hole in the wall neighborhood vibe. Seating is tight. There are dollar bills all over everywhere. It was fun reading what people had written on them. There was a full bar and a few TVs with sports playing. The folks were friendly. The food was pretty good. The catfish nuggets were not very seasoned but were fresh tasting (not fishy tasting) and cooked to perfection. The meals we ordered were big. We came here one time and it was great. We got here at 6 and the rest of the party at 6:15 today it's currently 7:29 and we still haven't gotten our food. Because "the printer messed up". Server said it'd be another 15 minutes before our food is done and i don't know why the ticket wouldn't have been made a priority. It's actually really upsetting this happened, as this was an important meeting and we thought this would be a great place to do it. I don't think we'll be back here in a long time. It's now 7:32 and we just got our food. Three of our plates came out with the main entrees burnt. Then still wanted us to pay after making us wait so long for burnt food and other food that didn't have the accommodations we asked for . Manager said they'd "take care of us", I'm not sure what she meant by that cause we were not taken care of at all. Update: they gave us a $50 gift card (1 card for the 7 of us) for "when we come back". We were in town for a Tx Tech tour- and I'll preface this by saying if our daughter decides on Tech, we'll try Jazz again. The drink specials were great- and the onion rings may have seriously been some of the best onion rings I've ever eaten! Beer batter and thick, 1" onion rings - seriously fantastic. In fact, I'd recommend going to have a beer, and some onion rings. The gumbo was mid-tier. We grew up in Houston so we had lots of access to solid gumbo. This was more more of a seafood gravy. Not bad, but not gumbo in our opinion, The blackened catfish, the fried shrimp, the coleslaw , all on the salty scale . Too salty for my wife and borderline for me. BE ADVISED. I award one point as it is the lowest rating allowed on this platform. I received a free meal from Jazz for my birthday. So, Lubbock Jazz location refused to honor it. $18.00 loss! The manager could not explain whether or not Lubbock had such a program, but she adamantly refused to honor my request. On my way out after our meal the waitress yelled to me to hold on as they forgot to include an item in my to go order. So, after this entirely disappointing outing I go home unpack my order and lo and behold they messed up my beignet order. So, I had the added pleasure of paying for two orders and received one. The food has so much potential but it falls flat. Fried platters would be so much better if they just added salt before frying. The batter in the catfish has a great consistency but no flavor. We had the friend oysters and that also had no flavor. The garlic mashed potatoes would be so good if they just added a bit of cream cheese and sour cream. The hush puppies were good. Super nice texture on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. They were the highlight of the meal. We also had the crawfish fettuccine, which was good but nothing to rave about. Now this was a gem aka a diamond in the ROUGH for sure! We were staying in Lubbock on a roadtrip home to Austin from Denver. We started off heading to Razzoo's which we quickly discovered is a chain restaurant with lots of super sweet drinks and what looked like frozen, bagged fried food parading as "Cajun". We decided to find something a bit more authentic and local and came across Jazz's. Walking in we knew this was more our speed. The place was packed so we sat at the bar. We got quite the show with dinner. The bartender and serving staff were all annoyed with the kitchen and vice versa. The food handling could use some improvement, but not a deal breaker. The food was awesome! I had fried catfish and she had crawfish creole which was a spicy tomato sauce with crawfish and other veggies. Catfish was fried crispy, fries were crispy and the crawfish creole was saucy and delicious. The staff was very nice to us and they genuinely seemed to be just giving each other a hard time because it was a really busy night and some orders weren't coming out just right and it was slowing them down. read more

If you can combine the ingredients in a dish together appropriately and put up Mardi Gras swag people will come. This ain't that. The special was chic ken A L Mer, blacked per the fun and quirky waitresses suggested. Big chunks of crab and shrimp doused in the creamy sauce. The chicken was cooked perfectly, blacked just right with a little crisp on the outside and juiciness throughout. Ordered hush puppies and they were made with the beignet dough, no corn meal and were sweet; just needed some powdered sugar to make a nice dessert. I ordered the Cajun Two Step (crawfish etouffee with jambalaya). It arrived cold - refrigerator cold. I did taste it and the flavor was good. I just did not want to chance eating something that definitely was not fresh. The server had the manager come over. She basically accused me of lying.
