If you want your drinks to taste like someone else's watermelon shot, this is your place. They will mix up shots with strong flavors in them and then use the same shaker to scoop ice for your drink. When you complain that the drink tastes funny, they will act like they have no idea why. Not sure if this is general ignorance, willful ignorance, or pure apathy. But you're the asshole because you don't want to drink a rum and coke that tastes like watermelon. Makes we wonder what else that ice is tainted with. I feel like Jon Taffer would have a field day with this place before turning into a silly club. Used to come here for years, but this phenomenon is now happening too frequently. I went here to watch a World Cup game with my brother in the middle of the day, because they had all day specials on beer. The Good: They have decent drink specials and virtually always serve in skooners. They have free WiFi and outlets to plug in. Lots of TV's arranged everywhere in the bar. The Bad: This was by far the smokiest bar I've been into in Lubbock, so that's saying a lot. I ordered a bloody mary and it was as thin as water. It wasn't very spicy and didn't feel like it had much of a kick. I saw a dad walk in with his daughters, and although it was the middle of the day, I still don't think kids and bars mix. Overall: Probably won't go back there, unless I'm extremely close, need the internet, and need a drink. read more

If you are a chain smoker you will enjoy. It was a very smokey place, like everyone in there was a chain smoker. Ordered some fried cheese and bacon cheddar waffle fries and they were just okay. The reason we went there was because we saw it while dropping our daughter at Tech and we wanted to watch the Cowboy game at a Sports Bar. The manager spent his time sitting at the bar drinking and smoking while he should've been paying attention to the esthetic issues (the reason I know he was the manager was because we had to ask the waitress to change the channel to the game and the "manager" had to do it)The restroom was a dump. Needless to say we didnt stay long. So, if you are a chain smoker and don't care about using a decent restroom then go ahead and enjoy. read more

I have such a love / hate relationship with Skooner's. On one hand, I have many, many wonderful memories of this place. When I first moved back to the LBK, I got in touch with my best friend from high school, who I hadn't talked to in several years. She worked at Skooner's and lived in these really bad efficiency apartments right behind the restaurant. Many of my first memories of my relationship with my husband happened here. Of course, a lot of those good times were because my friend was the one serving us drinks. On the other hand, this place is so unreliable. One time you go in and the food is great, but the service is bad. Another time, the food is terrible and the service is stellar. What can you do? It's a decent place to go grab a beer and some OK food. It's a pretty fun place to go late at night when you just want to hang out. Just don't expect any consistency, and don't be surprised if something about the place sucks. read more

Typical dive bar. A little too smoky for my taste, and the beer selection isn't great. But the atmosphere is friendly, the prices are good, and the bartender I had was fantastic. A friend of mine really wanted a piña colada, but their blender was broken. The bartender went out of his way to use a hand blender to make her drink. It made her night! You go into this place knowing what you're getting yourself into. This is a divey bar, without divey clientele. The patrons appeared to be locals, especially the ones at the bar. There are pool tables in the back and even when it's mostly empty the cigarette smell is strong. I was drawn in by the allure of $2.50 domestic schooners and a promise of good wings from a yelps review. The schooner was as advertised. There's just something about the weight of a schooner mug and the way it holds the cold temperature of the beer. It's getting harder and harder to find places that serve schooners. The wings were good, not great, but good enough to pair with the schooners and pull in an unsuspecting passerby. The place looks closed from the road, but when you see the north side it beckons you inside. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's exactly what I thought it would be. Don't expect polish and glamour here, it's just a down to earth beer slinging bar. And they have live bands and karaoke, go figure. If you're thirst for a schooner or just a classic bar experience, this place won't dissapoint. read more

Came in to have a good time. Signs saying happy hour Sun-Fri (11am-9pm) for $2.75 schooners. Get our tab and they were higher. Waitress says "oh yeah the owner just changed it just today". Nice notice guy. At least rip the signs down geez. read more

Skooners is not the best bar in town . . . But they have really great drink specials and a happy hour that goes on every day except for saturday. I always go to the bar instead of getting a waitress, although they do have a much better waitstaff then 3 years ago. The food is bar food, so it's not gonna be the best meal of your day, and it's certainly not healthy for you. . . but it's okay and moderately priced. this is not somewhere i would take a date but it is a fun place to hang out with friends. read more

My experience with Skooner's could have come right out of a TV sitcom. I went there with some friends to watch the Texas Tech bowl game. Overall it's a pretty typical bar a little smokey not a whole lot of beer to choose from and many large TVs playing football games. Everything would have been find except around the fourth quarter with the game tied they decided to cut off the games sound and have bunch of talentless amateurs sing karaoke, I've never seen anything like it. I suppose if I ever see this happen on a comedy I'll know who inspired it. read more
