Last night we dined here before heading home. I was looking for a local smokehouse that have menus that is not as usual. Their menu pass though. We had their pork rinds that came out hot from the pan or oven, love the zest of lemon and pepper on it. The fried oysters was delectable! Of course they have the brunswick stew which I had and it was so tasty and soooo delicious!!!! My spouse had their soup of the day, prime rib potato soup, that was yummy!!! And for our entree we ordered 3 smoked meats, pork belly, brisket, and ribs added a side of collard greens and mashed potatoes. It was heaven for all these meats! We came with a larger group for a scheduled lunch. Our table was ready and had no problem getting seated. Our wait staff was friendly and attentive. Refills came quick. Food was good. first I will let you know the staff was great... its downhill from there. The hush puppy's were fantastic... I ordered the chopped steak. it was burnt on the outside and raw and mushy on the inside. The mac and cheese really needs help. My friend ordered the fried catfish. She said it was awful. I tried it and I literally spit it back into my napkin. Just had THE best Thanksgiving dinner of my nearly 50 years of life. Every part of the meal was superb. The turkey was flavorful, moist and delicious. The brisket tender and flavorful. Every side was amazing- stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, gravy and the butternut squash bisque were amazing. Met a friend here last night, first time but won't be the last!! I'll make the trip from Richmond every week. The barbecue is awesome in every way. The brisket had a perfect smoke ring. I LOVED the smokey flavor of the BBQ. And the collards were some of the best I've had. Reasonable prices, huge portions and friendly staff...what more could I ask for? I came here for a late lunch with my mother. She had the homemade Brunswick Stew, which was amazing. Nice big juicy pieces of chicken and pork in there and a really flavorful broth. I had the Cherry Smoked Pork plate, which came with a huge portion of BBQ (see photo) that was smokey and moist, and two sides. I went with the hushpuppies and collards- both were outstanding. I particularly enjoyed the salty flavor the bacon provided for the greens. We started with an order of the butternut squash fries, which were ok...I guess for "fries" I prefer crunchy to soft. I had the Cherry-Smoked Pork Plate, pulled pork with 2 sides. I had the fries and Cole slaw. The pork was hard-smoked to perfection, and it was not inundated in BBQ sauce. They were on the side, 4 different types. The fries were excellent and the Cole slaw was not impaired by mayonnaise. Overall a 10. My wife had the wedge salad with blackened Tuna bites. Also excellent. The salad was fresh with homemade ranch dressing, the best my wife has ever had, and she is picky. We plan on having another meal here during our stay, to try some other choices. My wife & I decided to have dinner here on our way back to Williamsburg from West Point on a Friday evening so we wouldn't have to cook & because we hadn't been here in a couple years. We arrived around 5:00 & were seated in a booth after a few minutes wait. My wife ordered the brisket & burnt ends dinner with sweet potato fries & a house salad ($22 + $1.50 upcharge for the salad), and I ordered the ribs & brisket dinner ($26 + $1.50 upcharge for the salad) with mac'n cheese & a house salad. My wife got 3 slices of brisket & ~ 6 burnt ends & I got 2 slices of brisket & 1/3 rack of ribs (4 ribs). First off, the salads were decent size & decent quality, probably the best item of our dinners. My wife said her sweet potato fries were good, & my mac'n cheese was made with white cheese & it was pretty good. Now to the meat. Both the brisket and the ribs were completely tasteless! They mustn't use any kind of rub or seasoning at all on their meat. The only taste whatsoever was whatever sauce you chose to use. If the brisket didn't have the usual smoke ring color I would have sworn it was boiled to the point where every bit of flavor had been boiled away! And my ribs had zero rub or seasoning and no color suggesting they had been smoked or grilled. They actually looked like they had been baked but once again were completely tasteless as if they too had been boiled until every bit of flavor had been washed away! And my wife's burnt ends were burnt alright, some of them to the point that they were completely black & inedible, and also unbelievably tasteless. I don't even know how you could cook all this meat to where it was all completely tasteless! We may as well have been eating tofu or something, I can't even think of anything to compare it to! My own homemade smoked ribs or brisket would have you throwing rocks at these meats! We were both really looking forward to eating here only to arrive at this complete disappointment! To be honest, if this is how the food always tastes I really don't understand how they stay in business. It was honestly the absolute worst dinner I've ever had out. And all for ~$70 after we both had a beer, $80 after the tip. Oh, I forgot to mention that both dinners came with a piece of ok cornbread, not bad but nothing to rave about, just ok. Our waitress was good. Now I'm a big eater and rarely if ever complain, but this food was so blah that I didn't even finish eating my meat and my wife didn't finish her burnt ends, we carried them home to at least put some seasoning on it or if nothing else give it to our dog. This was our third and last time to eat here. I definitely could never recommend it to anybody wanting some good barbecue. I wish them good luck on staying in business if the food's always this tasteless. I never write reviews either, but felt like I just had to give people a heads up if they're considering eating here. I just hope your experience is better than ours was. I'm still in shock from the experience. I'm giving it one star for the service, salad & cornbread, but can't go any higher since this is a barbecue place & that was the worst part of the dinner. read more

The beef brisket is the best I've ever had! It's so juicy and tender, cooked to perfection. Not overly smokey, good flavor, and a huge portion size. The fried oysters are good too, breaded just right. My two sides were the green beans and hush puppies. OMG the green beans are cooked in some type of heavenly sauce and tasted so fresh. The hush puppies again, the best I've ever had, full of flavor and golden brown, just awesome. I'll be back next time we are in town to order the same exact items. My husband got ribs and rib points- not my style, dry rubbed, but they seemed ok to him. Our bellies were quite satisfied and big smiles on our faces after this meal. Service was excellent! Really disappointed. After living in Williamsburg for almost two years, my wife and I had heard from a couple of people that Two Drummers was the best BBQ around. Perhaps before Mission BBQ moved into the area, that was true, but I really hope not. The pulled pork was pretty good. That was really the only saving grace. The ribs had a good flavor, but the meat was tough and hard. The brisket was flavorless, which is surprising, considering the amount of fat; there was barely enough to get a few bites out of it. Perhaps someone in the kitchen was just having a really bad couple of days, but I'm not hopeful. The worst part, however, were the side dishes. Whereas the proteins could have just been an "of day", the sides were terrible. The "red beans and rice"... if that didn't come out of an "Uncle Ben's" microwave box, I'll eat my hat. It was bland and terrible. The Mac and cheese was so bad that my 2 and 4 year olds would not eat it; it had that gritty consistency to the cheese that you find in instant cheese sauce. The potato salad was bland, and the kind of thing you would expect to get from a Walmart deli counter. The cornbread had no flavor and seemed stale. The fries were okay. The staff was friendly. They deserve better food to work with. In short, Mission BBQ does everything better. read more
