I definitely do not recommend this place. They have a nice menu but they were out of basically everything. Of the dishes that did come out, each had almost nothing that we ordered correctly. Even then, as for the plates that did come out to us, all had missing items. The waiter spilled my aunts beverage on her and then just walked off. Don't waste your time or money on this place. We had the hush puppies, fried chicken, pulled pork and Salisbury steak. Everything was delicious. While I would order everything again, I will get the fried chicken with some glazed carrots next time. read more

While driving through New Kent I saw this cute little place which was memorable enough to stop at on the way back by. The restaurant is an adorable farmhouse-looking historic building with down-home southern kitchen. The restaurant was relatively busy on Thursday evening at 7pm and we waited just a few minutes for a table to get set. The service provided by Desirae was friendly and attentive. I was expecting a bit of a wait but was really surprised at how fast the food came out. They have a full bar and a whole list of whiskey drinks. My Fiance got the blueberry bourbon smash. They also have a whiskey flight for those interested. More about the food.. There are so many attractive looking dishes on the menu but I love that many of the plates include three sides!! I chose the grilled lemon pepper chickent (which includes two chickent breasts) collards, broccolini and the mac and cheese. All were so so tasty. I cleaned my plate and was quite full afterwards. My Fiance got the hot honey chicken, glazed carrots, mash potatoes and a garlic cheddar biscuit. Our food came out and our server alerted him that fresh biscuits were just about to come out of the oven but they provided him some corn bread with the plate. I appreciated the thoughtfulness of giving him something while he waited. The biscuit(s) came shortly thereafter and was hot/fresh and sooo damn good. Two spoonful size biscuits. We came here after being at Busch gardens for 4hrs, so we were tired and hungry. However, things still weren't as polished as they could have been. Upon entry, we were greeted and seated promptly. But then we sat for awhile waiting on our server, and there was only ONE other table eating. So after while, a server came over and said they were going through shift change and they're waiting on the other server to arrive but she would take our drinks for now. Hmmm okay, why she couldn't just wait on us until then idk. So she brought our drinks back and we waited some more. The same server came back and said well I'll take your orders too. We ordered the buffalo chicken dip appetizer which the waiter recommended, but it definitely was more cream cheese than anything. It needed more buffalo and chicken, wayyyy to creamy. For entrees we got 2 salmons, fried chicken, and the kids fish nuggets. The salmon and collard greens were good, but the squash/zucchini was just okay. I wouldn't order it again. My mom said the fried chicken and okra was good, but again the squash/zucchini left something to be desired. The kids fish nuggets weren't really nuggets, they were 2 big pieces of fried fish, I'm not sure how they were, but the fries were good. This place is located in a big historic house and is cute and has potential. I think we just came on an off day (server wise) but once we were waited on and then the new server came they were attentive. The food was mostly good. Well, i ordered takeout and someone in my party wanted breakfast. I ordered and paid through their website and it showed breakfast was an option so I ordered it for her. When she went to pick it up they said they couldn't do it. She had ordered three bacon, egg and cheese on toast sandwiches at five dollars a piece. Was told they don't serve breakfast all day so she ordered a BLT for 9.00. Guess they can cook bacon at noon but not an egg. No correction to the bill, so I was overcharged. Anyhoo, if your keto don't get the meatloaf. It clearly has a lot sugar in it and I can't for the life of me figure why someone would think meatloaf should be sweet. It was gross. The collards are mediocre at best. I had a bite of the chicken and it was good so if I go back here I will be getting that. read more

Was highly recommended from The Vaiden Inn B&B across the street (was good after having a few drinks, dinner and a whiskey flight!). I'm not 199% sure if our reservation was really needed, but we booked for 5:30pm and it wasn't busy yet, but by the time we left it was full! The B&B recommended the trout; I was very much interested in the southern fried steak (which they were out of). Our server recommended the fried chicken (my wife got this) and the grilled salmon (I got this). The salmon was good but not NEARLY as good as the fried chicken (which did have a sumptuous spicy honey!!!) . For sides, we got a good variety- shoestring fries, mashed potatoes (brown gravy on side), zucchini and squash, fried okra, collards and Mac and cheese. Honestly they *all* were great, only comment is that the collards were more vinegary than we cared for. To start, we had the fried green tomatoes- good but I must say we have had better. My wife had a cocktail (blueberry smash I think? Whiskey with ginger beer, etc) that she really liked. The Whiskey flight was a spur of the moment try....not something we ever get and was almost a random selection. Have to say say the two rye whiskeys were not either of our favorites but we really just don't drink st t straight whiskey much Service was fast and quick to bring out *except* she misunderstood that I actually did order for us the Whiskey flight so we had to ask and it came late (like with the entrees). Spotted this restaurant on our way to an event in the area. Martha's kitchen appears to be a southern home turned in to a restaurant, which is nice, but lacks ambiance- I'd say that deserves 2.5 stars. The menu is exceptional. Everyone in our party of three got so excited when reading the menu. We ordered the crab cakes which were good. Pot roast and chicken salad sandwich with fries. Two orders of The pot roast, both appeared to be missing the roast. Maybe a tablespoon, but no more, of meat was included. This was served in a bowl which was on the smaller side. Not how I think pot roast should be served. The dish consisted of a lot of potatoes and carrots. Temperature was cool and it did not look very appealing or appetizing. The chicken salad was good, however it was served on bread that seemed to be stale, like it was sitting out too long. French fries were also on the cool side. We were very disappointed with the food and will probably not return. It was unfortunate that execution of the menu, which read so well, was a fail. read more

Tried to have dinner there last night. We received an advertising postcard in the mail this week, and we checked the website where they had Father's Day specials listed for the weekend. Also checked their Facebook page, and while there were no recent posts, nothing indicated that they were closed. When we arrived, the sign on the door said "closed due to staffing issues". Hubby and I ventured to this location a few weeks ago. We were greeted on entering the establish the staff was very friendly and attentive on arrival. We were sat immediately and had a server shortly after being seated. She took our order and we waited for our food. What we received was delicious. Many of the side items we ordered were missing, even items that came with the meal. This was very disappointing as well as never receiving coffee warm ups or drink refills. This was a lovely little stop in a tiny town that barely exists. It's in a historic old house with great ambience. The food was phenomenal! The fried chicken was delicious with a flavorful and crispy batter and the fried okra was amazing. We fought over the last few bites. The buffalo chicken sandwich has the same fried chicken inside. My daughter had the grilled cheese and she mostly ate the inside but seemed happy. The glazed carrots were baby carrots with some sort of sweet marinade. We went on Mother's Day, and I had a reservation. It was a disaster. When we checked in the hostess/waitress told us they were running a good half hour behind on food orders but we could be seated and she would put in a drink order. Restaurant was only about half full. That suited us- but from there it was as if we were in an alternate universe, a Saturday Night Live sketch. After an hour we still did not have drinks. When we tried to order kids meals(chicken tenders) they were out. We ordered a kids Mac and cheese and a grilled cheese sandwich, plus one adult sandwich and one salmon plus one shrimp and grits. But....They had no salmon. They had no other fish (although crab, catfish and other fish are on menu.) Waitress had to check that the kitchen had enough for 2 orders of shrimp and grits. They were out of apple juice for the little one. They were out of one of the beers listed on the menu that my son-in -law ordered, and did not tell him until all the rest of us were served. Food came after we had been there TWO HOURS. They were out of biscuits. She served four of us and then told us the one child's macaroni and cheese could not be served as....they ran out of cheese. No alternate suggestions. Finally I ordered a corn bread for him....which was not given to us until we were leaving in a to go container. (Cornbread was good!; shrimp and grits only so/so) The waitress was very nice- she explained there was only one person in the kitchen cooking and there appeared to be only 2 wait staff, one of whom doubled at the bar. This was a memorable Mother's Day Celebration for all the wrong reasons. read more

Horrid experience! I got a gift card in April for my friends birthday and she went there for dinner on her special day. They would not honor the gift card because their system was down and made no effort to do it manually. I called a few days later asking for a refund...after 6 phone calls and an email to the General manager I got no response! ZERO. I don't like leaving a bad review but at this point that's all that is left. So disappointed with them. If the GM should read this, which is doubtful, you have my contact info. My wife and dog went here on a quiet Tuesday evening. We sat at the outside patio and were greeted almost immediately. We ordered drinks, wine and draft beer, and then dinner. My wife ordered the shrimp and grits and I ordered the lemon chicken (came with three sides). Both meals where excellent and we where pleased with the portions and at a very reasonable price. The only thing negative was the condition of the patio tables, warped and in my opinion, one table was usable out of six tables. Could also use some shade. We will be back, but without our dog due to the condition of the patio. read more

Four and a half stars! This is one of those places that left me wanting more, but in a very good way. First though, our hostess/waitress/busboy was the only person working the floor that night, and she did a FANTASTIC job. Her timing was pretty much perfect for everything, for every single table that was there. I don't know how she did it, except to say that she did it with a smile and a wonderful attitude. The food was great. The crab cakes were well portioned. The house only improvement I would add would be to increase the size of the sides. Most places will try to hide the size of their entrees by increasing the size of the vegetable portion. Martha's is the opposite. Good size entrees, and small portions of veggies. Luckily, they were delicious. This is definitely a restaurant that I'll go back to again and again. read more

Dinner yesterday was carryout from a new bistro in New Kent County. Martha's Kitchen occupies most of this beautiful house which was built c1810. While Martha Washington never lived there, the restaurant was designed to be as classy and gracious as the first First Lady. So many options on the menu! I settled on a Caesar Salad and a Club Sandwich. I had about a 10 minute wait, sitting at the bar, then made my way home. At home, I set aside the Salad and went for the Club Sandwich first. That is the way to build a Club Sandwich! Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo, American Cheese. It came with some less-than-stellar Chips; next time I'll tell them to omit the Chips. I ate half of the Club at that first sitting; and ate half severals hours later. I put the Caesar Salad in the fridge and ate it earlier today. I thoroughly enjoyed the salad, although it was not an authentic Caesar Salad. The menu lists it as "CAESAR romaine, shaved parmesan, croutons." Although it is not mentioned, there is also a generous amount of Caesar Dressing. And that keeps it from being authentic. An authentic Caesar Salad will not use Caesar Dressing, but will have all the components tossed just before serving. All in all, it was a very enjoyable meal, except for the Chips. In hopes of leaving a 5-star review, I intend to return to try the Meatloaf and Fries. read more

We chose this restaurant based on a search for a place to eat on Waze. The menu looked promising so we got off the interstate. Pulled up to the nice house and were pleasantly greeted by the hostess. She sat us and we checked out the actual menu. Our server came over and got our drink order. We asked several questions which she kindly answered. She had a great personality. We ordered a break basket. There was a garlic roll, a biscuit, a piece of cornbread, and a yeast roll. This was the best bread I have ever eaten. I strongly suggest everyone order this. We both ordered the Hot honey chicken. Three sides came with it. I ordered collards, green beans, and Mac n cheese. My friend ordered glazed carrots, mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese. Everything was tasty but the Mac n cheese was the standout. If I could improve one thing it would be more flavor for the green beans. The staff was great, food was great, and the restroom was clean. We were on our way back to Alexandria from a full day at Colonial Williamsburg and we were very hungry. It's Sunday and a lot of places were closed. We didn't want chain restaurant food, and this place popped up when I did a search for restaurants. It didn't disappoint. I ordered the hot honey chicken, cheese grits and yeast roll. My husband ordered catfish, green beans and fries. We loved every bite. That chicken was amazing. I couldn't finish it, but took the 2nd of my two pieces with us. An hour later in the car, I munched on it and it was still crispy and juicy. My husband enjoyed his catfish and sides as well. This is straight up good home style cooking. It's not gimmicky or overdone. It's just delicious and warms your tummy like good cooking should. Service was friendly. Enjoyed tall glasses of tea with the meal. The only thing that could improve our experience would've been if they hadn't run out of the orange bread pudding. I guess next time we are in the area geeking out on history, we'll have to stop by a Martha's Kitchen again. read more

Really disappointed with the food. Took my grandson to late breakfast after his soccer game. He had one pancake with a side of bacon and I ordered the biscuits with sausage gravy. The gravy looked to be the powdered packet variety, the sausage was a link cut up into small chunks and you could tell the two things were not cooked together. The biscuits were so tough and edging on burnt I couldn't even cut them with a knife. The whole thing was barely warm. My grandson's side of bacon was one slice thin cut- $1.50. He didn't finish his pancake so I thought I would seems how my plate was inedible- the pancake was doughy in the center. I almost got the impression the waitresses were also doing the cooking. The waitress was kind enough but only offered me 10% off. Really disappointed. Used to be such a nice little spot. read more

This is going to be a very hard review for me. I do not like leaving negative reviews or having to give one for a place that tried... but I have to tell the truth to be honest. They are short staffed. VERY. When I got there on a Wednesday at 6:15 PM, there were quite a few people in that small place. On the left side, two groups in one room (large groups) and then on the other side 5 tables were filled then we got seated. A table of 6 with four adults and two small boys, a table of two another table of two, a table of four (who got up and left without ordering 2-3 min after we were seated), and a couple with a baby and small child. After 29-30 minutes after arrival, we chatted with the couple with the baby who still did not have food and had been there LONG before us, they said also over 30 min for their drink order (not drinks, drink order). about that same time, a couple women came in and went to the corner. Within 5 min later, the waitress delivered an alcoholic beverage to the table of 6 (with two small boys) and took the drink order of the two women who'd been there all of 5 min. By now it's 36-38 minutes and no drink order, I pick up my purse to leave and waitress sees and I get irritated (sorry) and tell her we've been sitting there over 30 min (closer to 40 actually now) and no order! She is sorry says she is swamped, take the drink order and I don't let her leave, giving her our order for food too. Minutes later, the boys start crying saying they're hungry and the couple with the baby gets their food. FINALLY. I think they were there well over an hour. The couple behind my husband STILL have no ordered... and they were there same time as the couple with the baby! MY GOODNESS. Our food comes and we eat, and the couple with the 2 small boys there like an hour before us at least FINALLY start getting food, as we are finished eating. I am sure most of the people in that place have been there between 1.25 minimum -2.5 hours! I get it. They are busy. The waitress and waiter were NOT slacking. They WERE working hard. NOBODY bused tables the entire time. Almost every table was full of dishes. They spent a LOT of time at the bar. Pouring drinks? They did that more than anything. The food was ok to good. The prices were good. The small restaurant was cute. The portions were adequate (though small for my husband; he didn't seem to have much pasta, he can eat twice that). NO BREAD? NO SALD? Nothing to snack on while waiting an HOUR plus for your food? I guess I was cranky. I have a condition where I am dehydrated continually. I didn't even get water. I saw previous people got water at least (the unbused tables). I could not leave because drive home was another 45 min and the only decent sounding restaurant was 23 minutes in the opposite direction of home. So hard choices. The waitress and waiter did apologize several times. WHY isn't there a person behind the bar that seats people and then goes around for drink refills???? No, we never got that either. One person for that to free up the wait staff????? And one bus person who can also help when swamped? Or perhaps a manager or owner to step in? Just two people to seat, do the bar, do the drink, take the order, serve the food, do the refills, get what people need then bus the tables? Seems wrong. read more

Good southern fare! A cute historic spot that has multiple dining areas including a deck and a patio,. We were sat in the sun room Which is the area in back where the building was added in to with plenty of windows and sunlight. Our server was very sweet, friendly and prompt, we haven't had such good service in so long it was refreshing to experience again! The food y'all... the blackened lemon and pepper chicken is probably the best chicken I've EVER had. 2 huge slices of tender, juicy, flavorful chicken - enough for 2-3 meals for me! The fried okra was also the best I've ever had , we both instantly regretted not getting the fried green tomatoes or fried chicken if this is the same batter they use because it was perfectly light and crispy. ALLERGY ALERT- the fried okra my date ordered did have a piece of fried oysters coke with it which is a problem for shellfish allergic people like me, luckily I don't think it touched the peice I ate but I didn't eat anymore to be safe. Will be concerned to order the fried food in the future due to this :( The bread basket- you can get -1 roll of each so we did. The corn bread was so fluffy, moist and soft . There was no grit to it at all and again, the best I've ever had. 3 beats in 1 meal is unheard of! I could eat my weight in the cornbread! The yeast roll was very good, soft and slightly sweet. Their cheddar biscuits were DELICIOUS. My date kept raving about them, they are half the size of the other breads so they provided 2. The biscuit has potential , great flavor but too crispy and hard on the outside which was likely from an over baked batch. We would love to try a perfectly baked batch to get a better sense of their biscuits . The butter was also very good, tasted home made, and easily spreadable. The meatloaf was very smooth, great flavor, and a nice portion- my date and I would def order again but only after we try their other entrees! The sides were not as impressive as the others. The mashed potatoes were very good but the green beans were not the country green beans I was expecting from an establishment that Specailizes in southern fare. They were cut green beans that were a bit firm- much like from a can. I really wanted the stewed green beans that become limp from cooking all day- so I would pass on these again. The squash and zucchini also did not stew long enough, they were a bit too firm . I would also pass on these again. My date wasn't that impressed with the Mac and cheese and would pass on that again as well. We arrived around 6pm on a Friday and there were only a few diners. It took about 50 mins for our main courses to arrive which was a bit strange since other bar seats received their food before us when they arrived long after us. When we left the other side was packed along with more tables in our section. Def go early ! The mint julep was good, refreshing and a good balance of sweet yet bold with the rye. Will def eat there again, but again CAUTION for shellfish allergic patrons if they are looking at any of the fried items. read more

Took a friend here for lunch for her birthday. Upon arrival we noted there were a few antique cars in the parking lot. When we entered the restaurant there was a large group seated in one of sections. The hostess or server came out and I informed her that we were a party of 2. Her first response was, "our fryer is down and we can only use the grill". That was OK since we very rarely order fried foods. She then says, "we're really busy, and backed up with the larger party". "You can go up the road to the Trojan, there fryer is working". I was so flabbergasted and turned off as it was obvious that she was nit intered in our business. My gf and I stopped in at Martha's kitchen around 8 o'clock on a Wednesday. The staff greeted promptly and we were seated at our table immediately. The place is very quaint. It stated with 2 waters, which tasted a bit off, however i figured it was probably due to being on a well. No fault of their own, the coke I ordered as a replacement tasted just fine. For the meal we ordered 2 orders of the hot honey chicken with the following sides, Mac and cheese (x2) mashed potatoes and gravy, string beans. And then they yeast rolls and a garlic and cheddar biscuit. The chicken was decent, and the mashed potatoes were good. However, that's where i should have stopped eating, the rest of the meal was a disappointment. The gravy was, piping hot, like it was microwaved. The Mac and cheese was stone cold, and the second side of it was luke warm at best (should have added those when they did the gravy). The green beans had no flavor. And the yeast rolls...oh the yeast rolls, I was envisioning the type of rolls you got in elementary school, delicious fluffy yeasty rolls....well they were closer to hockey pucks or shuffle board discs rather than a roll. The biscuit was decent. However it tasted as if it was old, you know when a biscuit it out all day. I'm not sure if it was an off day or what happened.
