While driving through New Kent I saw this cute little place which was memorable enough to stop at on the way back by. The restaurant is an adorable farmhouse-looking historic building with down-home southern kitchen. The restaurant was relatively busy on Thursday evening at 7pm and we waited just a few minutes for a table to get set. The service provided by Desirae was friendly and attentive. I was expecting a bit of a wait but was really surprised at how fast the food came out. They have a full bar and a whole list of whiskey drinks. My Fiance got the blueberry bourbon smash. They also have a whiskey flight for those interested. More about the food.. There are so many attractive looking dishes on the menu but I love that many of the plates include three sides!! I chose the grilled lemon pepper chickent (which includes two chickent breasts) collards, broccolini and the mac and cheese. All were so so tasty. I cleaned my plate and was quite full afterwards. My Fiance got the hot honey chicken, glazed carrots, mash potatoes and a garlic cheddar biscuit. Our food came out and our server alerted him that fresh biscuits were just about to come out of the oven but they provided him some corn bread with the plate. I appreciated the thoughtfulness of giving him something while he waited. The biscuit(s) came shortly thereafter and was hot/fresh and sooo damn good. Two spoonful size biscuits. Lovely place for a great meal and service.

We came here after being at Busch gardens for 4hrs, so we were tired and hungry. However, things still weren't as polished as they could have been. Upon entry, we were greeted and seated promptly. But then we sat for awhile waiting on our server, and there was only ONE other table eating. So after while, a server came over and said they were going through shift change and they're waiting on the other server to arrive but she would take our drinks for now. Hmmm okay, why she couldn't just wait on us until then idk. So she brought our drinks back and we waited some more. The same server came back and said well I'll take your orders too. We ordered the buffalo chicken dip appetizer which the waiter recommended, but it definitely was more cream cheese than anything. It needed more buffalo and chicken, wayyyy to creamy. For entrees we got 2 salmons, fried chicken, and the kids fish nuggets. The salmon and collard greens were good, but the squash/zucchini was just okay. I wouldn't order it again. My mom said the fried chicken and okra was good, but again the squash/zucchini left something to be desired. The kids fish nuggets weren't really nuggets, they were 2 big pieces of fried fish, I'm not sure how they were, but the fries were good. This place is located in a big historic house and is cute and has potential. I think we just came on an off day (server wise) but once we were waited on and then the new server came they were attentive. The food was mostly good. I probably wouldn't come back since we were just out this way for BG but if you're in the area you should check it out.

Was highly recommended from The Vaiden Inn B&B across the street (was good after having a few drinks, dinner and a whiskey flight!). I'm not 199% sure if our reservation was really needed, but we booked for 5:30pm and it wasn't busy yet, but by the time we left it was full! The B&B recommended the trout; I was very much interested in the southern fried steak (which they were out of). Our server recommended the fried chicken (my wife got this) and the grilled salmon (I got this). The salmon was good but not NEARLY as good as the fried chicken (which did have a sumptuous spicy honey!!!) . For sides, we got a good variety- shoestring fries, mashed potatoes (brown gravy on side), zucchini and squash, fried okra, collards and Mac and cheese. Honestly they *all* were great, only comment is that the collards were more vinegary than we cared for. To start, we had the fried green tomatoes- good but I must say we have had better. My wife had a cocktail (blueberry smash I think? Whiskey with ginger beer, etc) that she really liked. The Whiskey flight was a spur of the moment try....not something we ever get and was almost a random selection. Have to say say the two rye whiskeys were not either of our favorites but we really just don't drink st t straight whiskey much Service was fast and quick to bring out *except* she misunderstood that I actually did order for us the Whiskey flight so we had to ask and it came late (like with the entrees). Oh well. Enough to be full and have to carry back leftovers!!!

What a Fab Christmasy Lunch!!! One of the best kept secrets of lunch off 64! In and out quick! Fried Chicken would make a bulldog break her chain!!! The fried okra needs no sauce. Servers smiles are so big they could swallow their ears!! We are gonna have to add this to the destination lunch spot!

Fried chicken and fried okra with side of Mac and cheese. Great batter and fry!

This was a lovely little stop in a tiny town that barely exists. It's in a historic old house with great ambience. The food was phenomenal! The fried chicken was delicious with a flavorful and crispy batter and the fried okra was amazing. We fought over the last few bites. The buffalo chicken sandwich has the same fried chicken inside. My daughter had the grilled cheese and she mostly ate the inside but seemed happy. The glazed carrots were baby carrots with some sort of sweet marinade. Overall, it was a great spot and we'll certainly be back!

Four and a half stars! This is one of those places that left me wanting more, but in a very good way. First though, our hostess/waitress/busboy was the only person working the floor that night, and she did a FANTASTIC job. Her timing was pretty much perfect for everything, for every single table that was there. I don't know how she did it, except to say that she did it with a smile and a wonderful attitude. The food was great. The crab cakes were well portioned. The house only improvement I would add would be to increase the size of the sides. Most places will try to hide the size of their entrees by increasing the size of the vegetable portion. Martha's is the opposite. Good size entrees, and small portions of veggies. Luckily, they were delicious. This is definitely a restaurant that I'll go back to again and again.

Well, back from the cruise and REALLY not feeling the whole "cook our own meal" after being so…read morespoiled, we decided to venture out and try something new. I was tasked with phoning in the reservation (thankfully the meal went better than that debacle)and since we were dining early it wasn't an issue. First of all, there are two places in the property; the Tavern and 5 Fields pizza and beer. We dined at the Tavern. GORGEOUS garden lining the old farmhouse! We went in and were seated inside right away. As it was almost 100 today it was ideal seating. The decore is well.... different. Where we sat was a truck grill from 1928, and there was more of a sports motiff. (If you go and sit in the same room, let me know if you can spot the crooked pic!) Once again, my curse at remembering names of the servers has hit again which is a real sham because she was beyond AWESOME. She was VERY patient with my extremely frustrating mum which was nice. We both got this truly genius idea of an appetizer to start; a veggie boat with a ranch style dressing. Omg it was perfect. Warm day, cruciferous veggies, ice cold drinks. Heaven. Next came the burgers, she got the Tavern burger, I got the Charles City burger. The Tavern has cheddar cheese and bacon, the Charles City has bree cheese and this creamy mojo ajo aoli along with fried shallots....there is probably more but all I know is that I feel like an idiot never having triple creme bree on a burger before. I have to take a moment to also inform you that they make the BEST Cosmo outside of NYC. Perfectly blended and chilled, and just strong enough to celebrate a Friday night. Yowza! One.more thing. They tempted me with a scoop of their home made butter pecan ice cream. I just want to move in and become one with this place it was so good. I haven't had butter pecan this good in 50 years!! After this essay I guess you could say that I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. It's in a beautiful area, lots of parking, great food & ambiance. I couldn't find a single fault.

There's never a question of if we're gonna get crab dip. I definitely recommend trying it. If you're just craving a snack and a couple drinks, they have a decent little charcuterie board and a few other little apps to put something on your belly. My sister and I shared a pasta and it was very good, I appreciate that the sauce didn't upset my stomach. Overall, if you want a chill weekend spot or even somewhere to eat for a business brunch, this is one of my top picks in the area. Don't pass it up if you have the time for it!!

We ended up at the Salty Siren for two reasons, one, it was recommended by one of the guides at the Henricus Historical Park as being near the Farrar's Island historical marker (ancestors) and it was on the river. The view was gorgeous. We were promptly seated at an outdoor table overlooking the water. Our server, Jodi H., greeted us with a smile and offered to get our drinks and our calamari appetizer. It was excellent. Light, crispy, fresh with a few fried jalapeños for zing. The dip served with them was really good. I ordered fried oysters, which came with authentic hush puppies (which for this southerner means no sugar!) and I ordered the vegetable of the day (steamed broccoli) to sort of make up for the "fried". My husband ordered the grilled salmon. His salad was huge and the vegetables were so fresh that I filched some of his cucumbers. His salmon was amazing. It was perfectly cooked and it was so moist and tender. We will try to return if we are ever travelling this way again. Try The Salty Siren. It can get a little pricy, especially when you want to try all of the things, but the portions were plentiful and tasted delicious. We started with the cheese stick roulette, where they apparently prep a bunch of different cheeses for cheese sticks earlier in the week, and then just randomly grab six to deep fry when you order it. You have no idea what it is, they have no idea what it is. Pretty fun and delicious and we love cheese, so total win. We ended up cutting them in half just to check what they were before eating because the kids do not like anything remotely spicy and pepper jack is one of the cheeses, so we just had to verify it wasn't that so they could eat it and hubs and I ate those ones instead. I thought the tomato coulis it was served with was stellar, and the fruity jam was also amazing. I could not decide which one was better for dipping the cheesesticks in, and I ended up keeping both condiments when the cheesesticks were gone so I could dip my fries in them. A fantastic choice, they were both great with the fries. Which I might add, are AWESOME! They are scoopable fries. So... like a cross between potato skins and potato wedges. They were both crispy and soft and very unique and so worth the trip. They also use the cheese dip instead of just shredded cheese, so it stays creamy and gooey. All of the burgers sounded awesome and it took us a very long time to decide what we wanted (I had been looking at the menu days in advance to make sure I could decide) and we opted for the Southern Gentleman (pimento cheese, hot honey and fried chicken) and the PBJ and I can't decide which one I liked more. They were both completely different and completely delicious. If I had to make a recommendation... I'd say bring a friend, order one of each and split them like hubs and I did. Choices are for suckers. Kiddos opted for the cheese fries that he came for (which come with bacon, btw) and the kiddos cheeseburger meal, and they both loved them. The service was great too, even when this place was pretty darn crowded on a weekday lunch hour. Also, don't be fooled by the storefront driving by, this restaurant is waaaaaaaay bigger on the inside than it appears on the outside. There was plenty of seating. The music was a touch too loud, but they also had some yummy sounding specialty drinks, as well as a bunch of local beers. My kids have been asking to come back pretty much since we left the restaurant.

A friend of ours didn't want her eggs runny. Instead of the waitress saying "I suggest over med or over well/hard" she just kept rolling her eyes and making faces. The place wasn't really full maybe about 10-15 people and most already had their food. So once we ordered our food it took forever to come out. During the whole meal I'd see other waitresses asking tables if they needed more coffee and what not and our waitress barely came around and never once asked if we needed refills. IDK how y'all eat this ham it was like eating spoonfuls of salt I was regretting adding a bit of salt to my eggs. The "cheesy" grits were not the best. I was expecting cheesy grits not just cheese over grits. I did finish it all considering we still had a ways to go to our next stop and the meal wasn't cheap.
