a meal in a plastic container

Been there twice ..had the basic burger to test the place out and it was simply ok. Beef needs seasoning!. Not so much sauce and it screams for red onion. The fries were good and I liked the salad although very small portion. All my coworkers agree its was just ok. Go to south street for a better burger. Next I got the 18$ fettuccini alfredo and I won't be back. Sorry, but I will deter the maaaaany lunch orders we place away from you and that's sad as the area needs quality food. The pic says it all. Under cooked pasta, the most pathetic piece of garlic bread all used with dry herbs that just scream for real ones...chicken cooked on its own and placed on top. I bet the alfredo was from a can. Shame! If there's anyone in the kitchen with talent, they ain't cookin. Don't be fooled by their pictures. With this area on the verge of booming and restaurants already falling victim to closing, not good!

The steak was tender and cooked well, and it came with condiments like jus and steak sauce, which added to the experience. However, the steak itself could have used a bit more seasoning and a stronger smoky flavor to really elevate it. Overall, it was an enjoyable dining experience with room for improvement in flavor depth.

The two ladies were just talking off on the side and texting on their phone all in plain sight. I understand there may be downtime in any shift but it lowers the vibe of the dining experience and also our soft drinks took forever to come to our table. just a Coke and just a sprite - also no offer for refills or asking if we wanted other drinks. the food itself took a LONG time to come out - only two entrees, no appetizers or fancy platters. once the food did come out I was surprised that everything was SO salty. also weird it's auto served with ketchup and bbq sauce. My steak had a lot of gristle on it and typically when the waitress would check in how things were I'd either mention it or they would apologize for the cut - but neither of the servers came by. I also didn't want to risk waiting another half hour for mediocre food and service. a family came in and they were seated right near us even though the restaurant was empty so that was also weird seating. when our meals were over and plates taken away eventually, we waited again for 10 minutes for someone to come by so we could get our bill. it's a weird layout because it's like the restaurant wants to be boujie but the service and food just don't meet the criteria. Needless to say it was not a good birthday dinner and I wouldn't recommend it.

I have dietary restrictions, so I spent a few minutes asking questions about the menu and looking for options that would work for me. Instead of being patient and helpful, our waitress, Hailey, became visibly impatient and responded in a rude and condescending tone. At one point, she cut me off mid-conversation to say that my friend's food choice was fine, then immediately rushed me to finish clarifying my own order. Her attitude made me feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, and as though asking reasonable questions about the menu was an inconvenience. It's unfortunate because I actually enjoyed the food. However, good food doesn't make up for poor service. I eat out frequently and never leave negative reviews, but the way I was treated today changed that. Because of the service I received from Hailey, I won't be returning.

However, I know why this restaurant continues to be booked and busy. I have been various times before but this was the first time in the last few years. I would describe this restaurant as western fine dining for a Chinese palate. You'll find some classic dishes but less heavy on the salt and grease, perfect for myself and the party I was dining with. I ordered the 5 course meal which was a fantastic deal for $65. The bread service at the start is so warm and yummy - don't skip out on it! The pesto sauce tiger prawns weren't overly pesto forward and had a strong presence of garlic - perfect for me! I loved the chowder as I especially like corn. The portion was also perfect considering I had many courses coming afterwards. Next, came the crab cake, which was generously filled with crab and paired with delicious house made butter. For each dish, I found the garnishes pleasing as well (especially the strawberry which was so sweet and ripe!). I think the best deal of the night was the steak. It was not too salty and cooked perfectly to a medium-rare. I managed to have leftovers as well since the portions were overwhelmingly good. Finally, the star of the night was definitely the chocolate soufflé for me. I loved the rich bitterness of the chocolate paired with ice cream on the side. I don't think this place is the best representation for fine dining. After all, they do not serve any alcohol. However, I think it is a great deal and accommodating to my taste buds. If I do not wish to drive out for fancy food, I know I can rely on the food at Shoestring café. As it is a family run business, there is only one person managing the front and I think they do a pretty good job at juggling all the duties of a host, server, and table busser! I would love to return soon.

Steamed mussels and soufflé were so addictive and heavenly. The mussels were savoury and buttery and the soufflé was airy with the perfect amount of sweetness. They were very good! Hits and misses for the mains. While the pasta and sauce were great, we wish the seafood were panfried or something to give it a bit more texture. The duck was well done but not tough (we generally like medium rare) though we were confused by why the skin was served down as crispy skin is always a plus for duck breasts. I'm not a fan of mashed potatoes but theirs was not overly heavy and buttery, which I really appreciated and enjoyed. This reminds me of Asian western food but they were tasty and the ambience was cozy - a local neighbourhood spot.

DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT IF YOU WANT YOUR EXPERIENCE RUINED…read more My son took my parents and I here for my birthday. We have been here before and my son really enjoyed it so he wanted to come here for my birthday dinner. We ordered 2 regular prime rib dinners, 1 fillet mignon, 1 French Onion soup and 1 Caesar salad. Here's what happened: 1. Parts of the crust on the French Onion soup came out black. I sent it back and the manager came by to minimize my concerns. Another manager came by to apologize for having the crust burned. 2. My son ordered the fillet mignon medium. It came out well done. The manager came out to apologize again. 3. The replacement fillet mignon came out tartar - seared on the outside, cold on the inside. 4. Same manager came out and deemed it was unaccepted. I asked for the chef. Sous chef came out and apologized. Offered to cook it himself. 5. After waiting 45 minutes for the 3rd attempt at cooking a steak, we decided to pay the bill, tip the server and we left. They didn't even bother trying to fix their first two mistakes. Overall, I would say this was probably the worst meal I've had the displeasure of having at a steakhouse. It was disappointing especially for a chain of steakhouses. My recommendation is do NOT patronize this establishment. You're better off at McDonald's or Wendy's if you want something that is cooked properly.
