I came here with a coworker during our lunch break. We decided to come here since it was close to our workplace and we were both craving something Asian. Overall, the food here is solid... nothing amazingly great, but not bad at the same time. I ordered their lunch special-- Korean beef plate, which came with Korean beef sauteed with veggies and kimchi served with white rice. I thought the beef was okay, could definitely be more tender. I wanted the kimchi to be tad bit more spicy. I also wished the rice was more fresh (there were chunks of hard rice kernels, which suggested to me that this rice had been sitting out for a while). Anyway, all that said.. the flavor was pretty solid for a lunch special. Would I recommend this place? Eh, not particularly.. not a must-try place in town (for me). I made a Valentine's Day reservation for this place, and well, we had a good time. Drinks were ordered over and over, and that got the night off to a good start. The regular menu was not available, but they had a downsized menu from what they normally advertise, and then a prix fixe menu. My husband is a vegetarian, and loves sushi, but there was nothing on the menu that was vegetarian, which was fine, but we asked our waitress about vegetarian options. She then said that they can turn any sushi platter on the menu into vegetarian fare, and so we ordered the Dinosaur. Our two friends ordered sushi, but I can't remember which one they ordered - it was really good, and I had stayed away from sushi for about two years because of a nasty experience at another place. I got the crispy duck in garlic sauce, and my two friends got the salmon and then the seared scallops. All dishes were tasty, and highly recommended to anyone going to Typhoon Asian Bistro. Duck was tender and succulent, the sauce was rendered well and not too thick, and the sauteed veggies were fresh and crisp. I had to ask for sriracha...it's a crime not to. And I'm of Indian descent. We love our spice. Desserts...oh dessert. We ordered the fried banana, and the chocolate mousse cake. A dessert martini was also ordered...which we all took a sip of. Tasty stuff. Then we got the bill. The "vegetarian" sushi was the same price as the regular Dinosaur sushi ($42). We were a little shocked that they didn't take into consideration (at first) that this sushi had no meat in it at all, and was still the same price. We asked the waitress to amend that, and they did, which was nice of them but we were just a little taken aback is all. My experience here was not the best unfortunately. My friend and I had dinner and received our entrees. Into dinner my friend noticed the chicken that was served with his entree was raw in the center; like visibly raw. Now I can't count the amount of times I've encountered raw meat at a restaurant unless it were sushi because...I've really only ever had good experiences. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed especially considering it's prime location on Boylston Street. I did bring our concern upon our waitress, the entree was brought back to the kitchen and returned to our table. I couldn't tell if it was re-heated, because the plate came back it a similar portion/fashion it was sent back. I would hope it was a new fresh plate. If there is any meat I would refuse to have raw, it's chicken. A few days past and I had not followed up with my friend since that incident with Typhoon Asian Bistro, so I don't know if he had gotten ill or not. I would hope not. I will say this has left a dent with my experience here. I don't think I would be eating here anytime in the future/again. We ate here this week on the spur of the moment and made the fundamental mistake of not checking Yelp before going in. My wife the sushi expert ordered 4 items. She couldn't finish 3 of them as they were way too fishy and just off/poor. She knows her sushi having had great experiences in all the cities we've lived in (NY, SF, Austin) as well as many stops along our travels including Sushi Mecca aka Tokyo. As the non seafood eater I had the beef rolled in pancake which was acceptable. The server was friendly but kept trying to sell more especially to me since I only ordered an appetizer. But even if the server was Taylor Swift we wouldn't come back for the poor food at high prices. read more

Took friends and their 6-mo old here - very accommodating and they were very helpful with the service. Quick to replenish water and other drinks. The food here was great! Tasty, fresh fish in sushi or cooked form, and the ambiance was nice and calm for the little one. Tried the Blasted Fish Salad, which was basically chunks of sushi fish seared a tiny bit to give it a wonderful flavor in an soy sauce that was over a bed of white daikon. Tasty starter. The Typhoon Striped Bass - wow. Miso-flavored sauce over a large piece of striped bass (bigger than my palm, which was a nice surprise) combined with seaweed salad, yam tempura, and white rice that filled a person right up. The fish was light, delicate, and not strong but texturally a delight - soft and flaky. Plus a few pieces of tempura sushi. The fried pad thai - a different take, using deep fried rice noodle to do it. Not as good as it could be - could've used some more sauce, but still fairly tasty. Sushi tried by my friends - also delicious. Goldfish rolls for those of you who like unagi and salmon! Beautiful vegetable flowers, too. From the start we weren't impressed. I bought an amazonlocal deal to try this place in part because it was 1) not very well rated and 2) kind of pricey for the ratings I saw. Sometimes these places are diamonds in the rough, but alas, Typhoon did not impress. The interiors are quite nice, a little dark, but otherwise well decorated and roomy. I was shocked when we entered the place was empty- late lunch on sunday, I expected to see someone around. We got the chicken lettuce wraps appetizer, two sushi rolls and the thai curry. Lettuce Wraps- nothing to write home about. It wasn't bad, but I actually thought the portion was a bit small. It also didn't have much flavor. Sushi- I got a spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura. It wasn't bad, but like the other things we tried, it wasn't good either. For a place with such a large sushi menu I was hoping for better fish. Alas, it was dull. Thai Curry- This was the dullest. It had very few spices and really tasted like straight coconut milk. I was really disappointed. Additionally, it had very little sauce so it was hard to mix with the rice. We got jasmine tea hoping to end our meal well, but the waiter didn't let it brew and poured cups for us before it was ready. Nice of him to try to serve us, but anyone who knows anything about tea knows it needs some time. Today me and a couple co-workers hit up Typhoon. This is was my second time here. I knew immediately what I wanted! The Tempura Philly. I come here especially for this. It's the classic Philadelphia Roll dipped in tempura. Anything basically dipped in tempura is pretty much awesome but especially this. We also ordered the Kamakazi Roll and the Yam Roll. The Kamakazi has shrimps, cucumber, tobiko, and a spicy mayo. I love this roll. It's very tasty, fresh, and has quite a spicy kick to it! The yam roll was good too. I didn't bother looking at the menu too much.. the prices were a bit high. I usually just stick to their Makimono sushi rolls. The place is cute.. not too many sushi restaurants serve anything more than just beer and wine. But they have a full bar which is nice. Can't complain yet! read more

Since my last review a year ago, my new favorite now is the Typhoon Sea Bass. It comes with a sushi roll, a sea bass filet, and some crispy tempura and a bowl of rice. If you order it at lunch, it comes with a side of soup. It is pricey at dinner though ($25), but relatively reasonable for lunch for the portions ($15). On a side note, I frequent this place so often that I signed up for their member card to collect points. For every 300 points ($1 = 1 point), they send you $20 gift certificate in the mail. I guess if I have a stack of these GC's it must mean I like this place! read more

A lot has changed since I first came here. We ordered the salmon on fire which was fantastic and definitely worth getting! Just make sure you don't overcook the salmon as the flames are actually larger. We also ordered the Peking duck which after the salmon on fire we had high expectations esp at an $80 price tag. However it wasn't great, it was only okay, not terrible/bad but definitely not worth the cost. Nahita's offers a whole duck for $85, that may be worth it. But the quality we got, we could have gotten for cheaper in china town. The bao buns that came with it were terrible, very stiff not soft, and very thick and definitely needed to be steamed longer. The ambiance was quiet and perfect for a date night if you're curious or looking to impress on a first date, as most of the pricing isn't too expensive. read more

My bro and I came for what turned out to be a solid lunch with my BuyWithMe voucher in phone. We had a chance to sample a bunch of things from the sushi boat for two along with the Typhoon and Rocking specialty rolls. The sake was delicious and some of the best I've had in a while, but the quality varied otherwise. The hamachi was on the cold side and you could tell that it wasn't quite thawed all the way with the noticeable wateriness in the texture. For a moment, it reminded me of the junk at most sushi buffets...no bueno. The sushi rice and seaweed could've also used a fair bit of work - def not fresh. The same could be said with the frying job on the Rocking roll - lukewarm with no hint of crispiness. On that note, the two rolls were overpriced...$8-9 each for only six pieces. We did appreciate the friendly, attentive service though with regular check-ins and frequent water refills. We went here on a whim, attracted by the candlelit tables and lounge-like ambiance. What we found was an interesting waterfall wall, an eclectic choice of music (house/trance to slow-moving jazz to underground hip hop mixes), and a beautiful presentation of delectable food. The four of us decided to share dinner and dessert. We ordered salmon, tuna, yam, and unagi maki for an appetizer; and the Mala Scallops, Peking duck, and pad thai for entrees. The size of each platter is great for sharing (or for your own meal). The waiters were attentive to our water levels, empty plates, and need for more sauce. We ordered the tiramisu, fried ice cream (with green tea ice cream interior), and Typhoon fried banana (also with green tea ice cream). For everything we ordered, we got great value, impeccable service, and impressive presentation. This place is great for large groups who just want some drinks as well. We've come here during bar hopping nights along Boylston and the staff served us well, despite our apparent drunkenness. Good times! read more

Overall impression of this restaurant is Meh, OK. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant wasn't busy at all - only two other tables were seated. After we sat down the tables started filling up, and by the time we left all the tables at outdoor seating was taken. There were two waitresses working and the overall service was SLOW. My boyfriend and I both ordered lunch specials, but never received our soup to start off the meal. The waitress never stopped by our table except to take our orders, bring the food, and the check. She was difficult to flag down just to receive our check. Food was mediocre. I ordered the drunken noodles and it wasn't as spicy as I would have liked, and the portion is small. After mixing my dish, I felt there wasn't a lot of noodles on the plate, but most of the portion was bean sprouts. The plates themselves were too large for our table. Our table barely had enough space to fit the plates, our cocktails, and water glasses. Yep, cramped. The highlight of my meal was the Pineapple Royale cocktail. A rum cocktail inside of a pineapple shell, yum. For $13 it was refreshing and worth every penny. read more

Had lunch here with the wife. Definitely a fancy restaurant geared towards working professionals in the area. I ordered the crispy duck with spicy basil fried rice and my wife ordered the spicy drunken noodle. Both were available on their lunch special menu. In terms of taste, they both tasted very clean. I thought the portion was perfect and the service was excellent as well. The only thing is at the end, I noticed a small fee (only about a $1) labeled "Liquor" under state tax. I asked what this fee was for and they had no clue. Had I not brought it up, they would have charged me a $1 for no reason. I don't think it was intentional and I don't think they are the type of restaurant to do dirty business but might be a good idea to carefully check your bill before actually paying! "Must. Have. Sake. NOW!!!" The sweet and oh-so-polite waiter nods in agreement, but still no sake materializes. It's New Year's Eve and only one hour to midnight. I'm here with my very best friend Stuart and we have (not necessarily in this order) wandered aimlessly about Boston, revisiting our old haunts all day: watching hipsters from the best balcony seat at the Other Side Cafe, gossiping about old friends on the rock scene, visiting Newbury Comix, spending huge amounts of time and money at one of Cambridge's (and thus the world's) best bookstores...and of course attending Boston's world-famous First Night Festivities. Our coup de grace at First Night, after tango lessons of course, was a surprisingly long and stunningly bloody visit to 10th century Beijing via a screening of Yang Zimou's 'Curse of the Golden Flower'. After two hours of trembling bosoms, zooming ninjas, Machiavellian family vendettas, and 'shing'ing scimitars caked in blood, we were thirsty. And hungry. Looming into view close to the Hynes Convention Center was this perfect Asian bistro, promising the tastes and scents our filmic visual feast had conjured. Also promised: warm shelter from the frigid Boston winter, respite from the annoying blasts from the plastic trumpets being sold on every corner, and the opportunity to continue our philosophical ruminations about the past year under the influence of some tasteful depressants. And so we return to our sad quest for speedy sake service. Alas, only Stuart's Sapporo had arrived in a timely manner, while I was left to my usual surreptitious sips from other patrons' glasses while Stuart distracted them (joking). The menu, as other reviewers note, is eclectic and thorough. Really thorough. We ranged from Singapore to Hanoi, and from Hokkaido to Quangzhou in the space of four pages. After much deliberation, we decided upon a brief visit to Vietnam via a bracingly hot and tangy tureen of soup for two (so: pick the Vietnamese Spicy Soup), and then a foray to Japan with a spicy eel roll accompanied by a strange gelato-like presentation of some sort of shredded raw fish over julienned vegetables. I wish we knew what it was, but whatever. The presentation was spectacular, and the sushi superb. The Chow-Yun-Fat inspired Chinese entree of lemon lime sizzling beef with crisp broccoli was fairly standard but tasty and filling. Meanwhile, the large bottle of sake having arrived, we prepared to toast the new year amongst the multicultural mix and the efficient and courteous wait staff, and a frienly visit from the owner. 5...4...3...2... As people dressed as frogs, ballerinas, and statues of Liberty danced outside the plate glass window, we revelled in the warm, glowing, orange-hued interior and observed the beautiful yet understated stone waterfall wall that ran the length of the restaurant. Four stars, then, and perhaps it would have been five, had Stuart not encountered a tiny reveller he would rather have not. That is to say, upon visiting the gent's he danced a new tango while trying to avoid the miniscule mouse who, let it be said, would rather not have seen Stuart, either. Rather than scream like a girl and stomp on the hapless creature, Stuart decided to usher in a kinder, gentler New Year by outfitting the tiny rodent with a jaunty party hat and a itty-bitty plastic trumpet, whereupon with a tiny toot the mouse retired, and Stuart and Valentina made their way into the brisk air of 2007. read more

Nicest Asian place in the back bay! My faves are spicy scallop maki, blazing salmon, volcano, thai steak, dancing lamb ...ah, and flan. I've been there many different times and every time there's something new (the decor). Cool. The very long water fountain is a nice addition. Now, it was my birthday, and my friends bought me a flaming drink... flaming lamborghini-bikini?.. which was a martini size of vokda drink that serves as a shot. As the server was pouring the flaming sambuca into my flaming martini, I had to suck the whole drink by a 20 feet straw.... no no, about 2 feet. Wow! That was the best birthday present anyone every bought me. The drink was really cold and it was on fire... hum, interesting, yet, loved it. Happy hour was cool too. After 10:30 friday night, the place has gone wild. With buddha dancing on my table with a candle ... my girlfriend was stripping... yeah.. something like that. Or maybe it was one drink too much and my imagination went nuts. But the lounge-type music playing really set me into the mood... yet, very cozy and same time, relaxed. What I like most about typhoon is that it has great Thai food at an affordable price and iis NOT PACKED on a weekend. I have been there many times and I have never figured out how this place is not always packed. Definitely try the spicy typhoon chicken, the sizzling beef, the sushi. This spot is hot! It's very similar to NYC's Buddha Bar (only smaller and classier) I love the fresh and special sushi selections here. Don't care much for Chinese food, since the sushi is just delish and plenty. The decor also is great touch to its diversed theme. Especially the very loooong and red water fall. My dinner experiences here are from very good to excellent. The waiters here are very polite and respectful. And from time to time, the owner checked at our table and others to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying our time. Great touch. read more

My word. The shrimp in a pineapple shell arrived at our table beautifully presented but emitting that sickly-sweet odour of decay, which we confirmed with one bite. The staff were responsive and exchanged the dish for another -- the lemongrass roasted chicken -- which was unfortunately bland and also of questionable freshness. At this point we decided to just skip to dessert and leave; never have I walked out of a restaurant as hungry as when I arrived. It is impossible that the chef did not notice that one of the ingredients had begun to go bad, yet they still prepared and served the meal nevertheless. Incredible. How on Earth has this place lasted so long? I have never had a good experience here, but I keep going back because for some reason friends and coworkers seem to think it is a great place. The service is terrible. I'm talking bottom of the barrel. We literally received our meals one at a time when I was there last. That meant the first person in our party had his entree in front of him for about 10 minutes before the last person in our party received hers. Unacceptable, especially considering we were the only party there. The food is mediocre, yet the prices seem to think otherwise. I'm not the biggest sushi fan in the world, but I do enjoy it and eat it occasionally. The fish was extremely fresh and delicious, but the best part of my meal was the coconut lemongrass soup (don't remember the name!). It was definitely the most delicious soup I've had in a long time (the winner for the most delicious soup I've ever had is my dad's hot and sour soup! but this is definitely 2nd place!). The flavors of coconut, lime, and lemongrass all intermingled to create a tangy yet delicate broth that I would've sipped through a straw! I'm gonna try to recreate it at home this week, it was so delicious. Also delicious was the fried ice cream.... basically a ball of whatever flavor (strawberry, green tea, coconut) wrapped in white bread and then deep fried. I'm not sure I would order it again because it was almost overkill, but it was very tasty and creative. Ambiance was beautiful and peaceful. Good service too! I was there with Kelly Young yesterday around 5PM for our late lunch/early dinner. I must say that the sushi rolls at this place are just right. Right size, right cuts, right plate arrangement, and very fresh. We sat by the window because the patio was full. But the windows/doors are opened and we felt just like sitting outdoor. Each of us had 2 Mango Margaritas. The drink menu has lots of exotic drinks that we must return to try them all, although classic drinks are also there, such as Manhattan. Now the music. Where on earth that they found those music? It's a mixture of lounge and lounge-jazz, I guess. We stayed there for 3 hours, and enjoyed every moment of it. Their dinner customers are so classy and elegant that we felt underdressed and had to leave. My fault. They didn't say anything or even show a sign. But you know, when you feel that you're not dressed right, you just want to bounce. :) BTW, the servers here are very polite. Very! We'll be back for more great sushi rolls. read more

Unimpressed. I've only tried their sushi and sashimi but I have higher standards for a $20-$30 meal. I knew I wouldn't be full from just sashimi so I also ordered a roll on the side. The Typhoon Roll ($11) was named after the restaurant so I though I'd like to try what Typhoon chose to represent themselves. What came was 4-5 pieces of medium-sized sushi filled with various types of fish and egg. I still don't know what to think of it. I obviously didn't feel that these $2+/piece of sushi was worth it but it was also one of the cheaper "special" rolls on the menu. For an entree, I had the Lobster and Fish Sashimi ($29). Proportions of the lobster were generous. I believe the chef used an entire lobster tail and displayed the sashimi over ice half in it's original shell and half in a martini glass. The lobster was fresh and tasty with it's light soy sauce, fish roe, and green onions. It came along with three slices of: salmon, tuna, and red snapper. The fish was not as high in quality as I would like and the salmon seemed more like bits and ends than quality slices. The chef's salad was either the garnish or was missing. Typhoon lacks creativity and constancy. They do a lot of Groupon-like discounts so I feel that it takes away from the restaurant's interest in serving at their greatest potential. Typhoon is my unhappy medium; I will either eat at a more casual sushi joint, or spend a little more to enjoy a more consistently great meal. Also, someone should tell them that a crushed maraschino cherry is NOT a garnish. ***UPDATE*** Owner says that to have the full "Typhoon" experience, you must order the higher end items. The cheaper items are just fillers. I sure hope that they use better fish in the more expensive dishes because my $29 Lobster and Fish Sashimi had three "strands" of salmon. For years I've avoided sushi..in fact..I hate sushi, but always willing to give it a try because it's a healthier option than macroni and cheese. I've been iffy for so long, but tonight... I finally fell off the fence into the wonderful pile of california rolls. Ladies and gentleman..I...am a sushi eater all thanks to Typhoon. I know california rolls aren't fish, but I'm willing to take the next step. Atomosphere alone leaves me coming back. By intimate setting I mean small but not crowded. Gorgeous maroons and warm tones and cherry wood furniture, asian influence decor with sultry lighting. Vanilla and other exotic scented (sandlewood?) candles made it cozy. Made it perfect for me and my honey to celebrate our anniversary! We had 10pm reservations, which I thought might be too late, and we were escorted right to our table, no waiting! Drinks: Were very very very strong. As an avid martini drinker, I had one and we had to take a cab home. My breath wreaked of a rich cougar party. They shake the drinks in mini mixers and bring them to your table before they pour. Menu: This is perhaps why they are missing a star. I was recommended to try the chicken with garlic sauce, although I didn't see it, I saw duck. I asked if I could switch the fouls but it was a no can do. A little disappointed being that I hate duck, even after trying it a million times. I tried it anyway, and it had a very thick layer of fried blubber on top, which you could peel off. But the steamed rice was perfection! Great consistency. Asian fusion is such a great concept! I first checked out the website, I'm a sucker for great advertising, and the website was a great experience too! You can take the green line to prudential and walk right across the street, and cabs are everywhere. We went on a Friday night, and there were a gaggle of drunk girls behind us taking pictures (which is EXTREMELY bright considering the setting). They were so obstrusive. Went here for a date night w/ my BF on a groupon. But the groupon menu seemed to only have everyday take-out options. So we ordered an appetizer & our entrees off the regular menu. The shrimp ragoons were ok, but I prefer regular crab ragoons that you get from Chinatown & other restaurants. We also had Uni shots which I think you have to have a taste for. It's a quail egg in some liquid and seasonings. Didn't taste bad per se, I personally didn't like it much, but my BF did. I had pineapple fried rice with beef in a pineapple shell. It was good, the pineapple gave a light sweet flavor to the rice, but the rice & beef needed more seasoning on their own. My BF had the crispy duck which was DELICIOUS. Highly recommend that dish. And we shared a ginger fried ice cream, which was also really good. read more

Had dinner here with a friend on a Saturday night and I am interested in going back with a group of people. Typhoon has a mysterious yet up-scale presence- dark, lots of candles and special buddha music, some cool Italian, French, and jazz as well. The food was just delish. We ordered Maguro Mango Salsa and our waiter recommended the Baked Salmon maki which was crab meat and crunchy flakes rolled on the inside, outter layer was half way cooked salmon with teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo?.. Just perfect... we loved it very much. I ordered the raw tuna sashimi as an appetizer, and the quality was so fresh as though the rest of the fish is still swimming! No kidding! In brief, this spot has been one of my faves ever since my freshman year at BU. My friends and I used to come here to have "sake-bombs" and "Kamekaze shots" as we sucked down sashimi slices. Now, this place is still one of the coolest spots, or even better with the new decor/renovation. I was amazingly surprised when returning to Boston with many places that I used to use as my "food source" were actually closed down, some a while ago, some recently as I heard. Oh well. This place's sushi is just delish. Usually sushi is served tasteless to prove that the fish are fresh. But Typhoon is very different. Not only that you can taste the delicate textures of fish, but you can enjoy them fresh and delish here. When we ordered sashimi samplers, it hooked us to order more from the sushi list. The fish came out so fresh that we just had them without any wasabi-soy. Then our server suggested the sushi specials from the pictures hanging down from the ceiling of the sushi bar, we were stunned. The fact is that we didn't know this place has a lot to offer its clients. So we ordered the blazing miso salmon roll and watched the chef blazed it in front of our eyes.. wow. We slowly enjoyed the bites in pleasant silence! It was worth that 30 minutes wait for three seats at the sushi bar. Although the chefs didn't talk to us much (they were very busy), we would definitely come back for more since there were many more we didn't have room to try. One thing I would suggest to you guys: make reservation a few days in advance and arrive 5 minutes early. This review is seriously all about the "Sushi Lunch." Seriously delish! (Let's see how many times I can use 'seriously' in this review). I had been to Typhoon way back in the day and nothing about this restaurant resembles what it used to be, especially looks-wise. My friend and I were able to have our first outdoor lunch in the city this year here the other week and due to the darkness that engulfs the restaurant the further back you go, I think sitting outside or as close to the front window is the way to go. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't stop in if there weren't tables up front or outside available. And seriously (there it is again) the bathroom is crazy dark. I flipped the light two or three times to make sure it was on. But regardless, if I'm in the area, this is where I'll go for lunch. To summarize: Eat the sushi lunch and eat it outside so that everyone walking by on the street stops to stare and point at your martini glass full of seaweed salad, creatively pasted to your plate with a wad of wasabi. Eat other things as well because my parents had the walnut chicken and the sizzling seafood when I dragged them there exactly 7 days after my first time there this year (I had a craving) and it was all fantastic. Have a glass of white merlot and maybe I'm very out of the loop but I had no idea there was such a thing, but I'm sure glad I know now. Oh, And P.S. It was a Saturday night and we were buzzing and hungry. Every other place downtown had a half hour to hour wait which we were not feeling at the time. So we stopped by Typhoon on a whim. Wait time: 10min. Sign me up! The sushi menu looked extensive, but we leaned towards the foods that were cooked. Shame on typhoon asian bistro for overcharging for average food. For what I think it's supposed to be, doing up Asian foods (cause we in there like swimwear baby!!), it's a great concept. But for all that it's lacking, it's a damn shame. You might as well take any ordinary joint in Chinatown and prop it up on boylston st. if you plan to eat here. What you're paying for is the location, the cloth napkin, and their electricity bill (this place is DIMLY lit). My date's filet mignon was overcooked and overwhelmed with a sweet marinade. My own clay pot dish had chunky veggies and was under seasoned. Our waiter was also incredibly inattentive. Trust that I won't be back here--this typhoon has blown me out. BYE! read more

With a menu that could double as a stop for one of those steel, techy sliding doors on the Death Star (I'm not even kidding...I just referenced Star Wars), execution on every single one of the million dishes offered is VERY difficult. Which is why I'm not surprised that on a busy Saturday night with our party of a gazillion, THIS was just not going to happen. We had to be moved to another table shortly after ordering because for some reason my drunk friends just plunked down at a vacant table which was being reserved for another large party. Our waiter was pretty goofy and not what I would type as "fine-dining" material, but he tried. I always look forward to ordering fish at Asian Fusion restaurants because fish is so versatile and a great conduit of creativity. Mine, whatever it was, was dry and boring. My friend's steak came out a cool room temperature and had to send it back for what the waiter blatantly said would be some culinary magic of "microwaving"...we were really impressed (but not really). However, I really enjoyed my Vietnamese salad with chicken, but I've had better at Pho Pasteur or Xinh Xinh in Chinatown. The sake flowed freely and the lively atmosphere was fun but could I just take a moment here to bitch about the ladies' room??? The inconsistencies were really funny...lemme Freud this one. When I see thick, luxurious hand napkins slapped on top of a American Standard sink or toilet paper nailed onto a bit of plywood against the backdrop of semi-expensive bathroom tiles, I realize that someone didn't know where to allocate the budget. It's like the unhappy marriage of the truck stop restroom and the Saks ladies' lounge...it doesn't work and it confirms the inconsistences present throughout our dining experience. Finally, the awkwardness of splitting a birthday dinner bill among 15 guests got even more awkward because of the $20 cake charge. When I tell a waiter that it's my friend's birthday and to bring out a little slice of cake, I don't expect to be given a rather large block of tiramisu with a candle stuck in it with an arbitrary bill of $20. Completely uncalled for and low. Some geniuses can pull of Asian fusion (eh hem Ming and Polly Tsai of Blue Ginger) but I couldn't help but feel that Typhoon didn't think very strategically about the many facets of its business. I can see from the reviews that Typhoon has potential especially if it focused on dishes that work, invested in properly training its waitstaff, and cleaned up some details, but currently, it's just not working for me. read more
