Shame on typhoon asian bistro for overcharging for average food. For what I think it's supposed to be, doing up Asian foods (cause we in there like swimwear baby!!), it's a great concept. But for all that it's lacking, it's a damn shame. You might as well take any ordinary joint in Chinatown and prop it up on boylston st. if you plan to eat here. What you're paying for is the location, the cloth napkin, and their electricity bill (this place is DIMLY lit). My date's filet mignon was overcooked and overwhelmed with a sweet marinade. My own clay pot dish had chunky veggies and was under seasoned. Our waiter was also incredibly inattentive. Trust that I won't be back here--this typhoon has blown me out. BYE! read more

With a menu that could double as a stop for one of those steel, techy sliding doors on the Death Star (I'm not even kidding...I just referenced Star Wars), execution on every single one of the million dishes offered is VERY difficult. Which is why I'm not surprised that on a busy Saturday night with our party of a gazillion, THIS was just not going to happen. We had to be moved to another table shortly after ordering because for some reason my drunk friends just plunked down at a vacant table which was being reserved for another large party. Our waiter was pretty goofy and not what I would type as "fine-dining" material, but he tried. I always look forward to ordering fish at Asian Fusion restaurants because fish is so versatile and a great conduit of creativity. Mine, whatever it was, was dry and boring. My friend's steak came out a cool room temperature and had to send it back for what the waiter blatantly said would be some culinary magic of "microwaving"...we were really impressed (but not really). However, I really enjoyed my Vietnamese salad with chicken, but I've had better at Pho Pasteur or Xinh Xinh in Chinatown. The sake flowed freely and the lively atmosphere was fun but could I just take a moment here to bitch about the ladies' room??? The inconsistencies were really funny...lemme Freud this one. When I see thick, luxurious hand napkins slapped on top of a American Standard sink or toilet paper nailed onto a bit of plywood against the backdrop of semi-expensive bathroom tiles, I realize that someone didn't know where to allocate the budget. It's like the unhappy marriage of the truck stop restroom and the Saks ladies' lounge...it doesn't work and it confirms the inconsistences present throughout our dining experience. Finally, the awkwardness of splitting a birthday dinner bill among 15 guests got even more awkward because of the $20 cake charge. When I tell a waiter that it's my friend's birthday and to bring out a little slice of cake, I don't expect to be given a rather large block of tiramisu with a candle stuck in it with an arbitrary bill of $20. Completely uncalled for and low. Some geniuses can pull of Asian fusion (eh hem Ming and Polly Tsai of Blue Ginger) but I couldn't help but feel that Typhoon didn't think very strategically about the many facets of its business. I can see from the reviews that Typhoon has potential especially if it focused on dishes that work, invested in properly training its waitstaff, and cleaned up some details, but currently, it's just not working for me. read more

Not bad. Ordered the Uni which wasn't that bad except for the rice had no flavor to it and the nori seemed like it was prepackaged and had not roast to it. Never found out where the Uni was from after asking two people. The sushi ritto was really good though. Got the spicy tuna burrito. Probably not worth the 15 dollars that it costs but no one else really does a sushi ritto. Also got a drink, one of the flute drink and it was pretty good. Would give this place 3.5 stars but I was so happy with the sushi ritto that I'll bump it to four stars. read more

OK, So stop reading if you're looking for a sushi afficianados take on Typhoon... or even somebody that knows anything about Asian Cuisine.. Because I'm not him... I just eat whatever is put in front of me, ask no questions, make loud noodle slerping noises and get angry at the chop sticks lack of grippyness. Yeah I'm the guy with the tape connecting 4 chop sticks together fashioning a wooden spork. It's like watching a chimp fashion a simple tool out of a stick in the jungle or something.... That aside... What I can tell you is that this is a very fairly priced Back Bay eatery with a different and fun atmosphere that feels a bit tilted towards upscale- The service while there was quite good as well, though it was later on a Tuesday night, so they were not busy at all- Service, portions, speed, and drinks were all very good, especially for hte price and location. My date seemed to really really like it and she's a big sushi fan, so assum,ing she knows what she's talking about - she was a happy camper too! read more

Usually this place is packed, but last night (monday night) was somewhat slow, so the service was extra smooth. I believe there was lesser than 40 people in the dining room, but it was fun. We ordered warm sake and added Chinese salty plum and made it our "plum-onade", the alcoholic version. Our server, a white guy, was confused when we ordered it that way. He must have thought that these Asian girls are nuts! However, it came out very nice. I should pull a patent on that recipe. The sushi choices here had changed. They added many new choices and dropped a few, prices are about the same, amazing, 'cause most of other places' price had gone up a little. The new items we ordered was beyond sushi. Like the ebi tobiko was some baked seafood over ebi and wrapped with shiso leaves, YUM! The monk fish paste was also excelently served and presented. Overall experience was perfect. Perfect crowd, perfect volumn, perfect lighting... the waterfall wall with candles adds soothing feeling to the atmosphere. Usually I like to sit on their patio, which is very cozy, but it was too cold last night to do that :). BTW, the manager told us that there will be another Typhoon Bistro opening somewhere in the southshore, I didn't catch the town's name, but near southshore plaza. That's where I shop so I can go there to avoid Boston's parking problem. read more

Well I don't want to leave too rude a review because maybe this was just an unfortunate accident. The drinks were good and the food was decent but overpriced for the quality I'd say. Pretty empty on a Friday night to be honest though. We came in because there was a sign outside saying five dollar margaritas. We asked the waitress about the deal and she confirmed it, then we said we all wanted margaritas. We got two rounds. When we got the check all the margaritas were 14 dollars. According to the waitress we hadn't specified that we wanted the five dollar ones. Seems pretty underhanded but maybe it was an honest mistake. I probably would not come back. Having lived in Boston for several years there are plenty of other places serving similar food with better quality and much cheaper. The menu seemed very standard, the only food we got was the fried calamari. It was 15 dollars and came with fewer than 15 pieces of calamari, kind of a bland sweet and sour sauce. read more

The environment, service, decor was nice and all but what I got what definitely not worth for what I paid. Started with the appetizer, twin summer handrolls, it looked very cute, very creative roll, but just too much for two rolls. All you get is just some grass and a piece of "half shrimp". Going into the entree, we ordered the sashimi dinner DELUX which came with a "chef's salad". On the menu, it had two choices between regular and delux for the sashimi dinner, price was only a few dollars difference so why not. But what a big disappointment! All in total was about 15(?) sashimi for nearly $40, not worth it. But the sashimi didn't taste bad. The chef's salad=seedweed& a few strips of cucumber. ok, whatever. Another entree, we ordered one of the steaks, it was not steak first of all. They made it in the Chinese-Take-Out style. They probably cut it into pieces first then dumped into those big Chinese-Take-Out style pan, and pan fried it. The sauce was probably just a mixture of the regular sweet and sour garlic sauce with some hot sauce. Oh, the steak came with a few strips of asparagus on the bottom of the "steak". I can't tell you howmany times I've walked by this place... After years, we finally decided to try it. The atmosphere was very intimate, I think it was redone not too long ago... The sushi here was amazing, as was the vegetable tempura(which I tried because of the other good reviews), also was fresh and cooked to perfection. The drinks were great, and the selection was extensive.. My husband got Mongolian beef, which was only okay, The beef texture was perfect, but the sauce was generic, and thick, and only okay. The service was pretty efficient, The apps came out real fast, and sushi.... But then the entree took a little while, But still, we didn't mind enjoying eachother...so that was fine... Typhoon is a great place to grab lunch if you work in the Back Bay area, or a great place for a casual dinner. The wall fountain gives a unique ambiance to the outside, and on nice days you can eat outside. The food is good for both fans of raw fish, and those who don't care for it. My personal favorite, not enjoying raw fish, is the vegetarian sushi lunch. This consists of an appetizer of miso or hot & sour soup (very good) followed by a nicely plated assortment of vegetable nigiri, a small cucumber roll and a martini glass of seaweed salad. read more

Can't say I'm very prone to liking restaurants named Samurai.. or Ninja.. or anything Hibachi (would almost rather starve than put up with that clown show.. and that's saying a LOT). Then there was the massive menu. Could the chefs really cook every single item on that menu? How!? They must be the walking encyclopedia of Asian cuisine! I went for the sushi boat.. for one. Haha, how sad. Until I got it, and it was HUGE. And surprisingly.. fresh. I washed it down with one of those terrible 'clever' cocktails they serve at these sort of joints and left. I came here with a large group of coworkers with very short notice (we called 30 minutes prior), and the staff was fantastic. They had a very long table set-up and waiting for us when we arrived, and we were seated immediately. The waitstaff was quick and attentive, and everyone loved their food and drinks. When someone in our party got a small cut on her finger from a utensil, the waitress appeared with band-aids. Beautiful decor, and they have outdoor seating available. They have a separate, extensive vegetarian menu, which was very popular with the vegetarians at the table. read more

OMG shoot me...came here for a large group dinner event - there was about 30 of us. Service was slow/terrible and ventilation was terrible! It felt worse then a warm, humid day outside. They have an extensive menu of different cuisines - thai, japanese and who knows what else. I opted for sushi. Didn't think one could actually go wrong. I ordered a Dragon roll, and nigiri: O-Toro, Amaebi, Spicy Scallop. The fish was not fresh, it could've been a potential food poisoning situation but fortunately I was fine. It just tasted old...but it was probably because it was 110 degrees in there. read more

I didn't check this place out on yelp before walking in; something about the restaurant just called out to me and I decided to go in. Upon walking in I was greeted and sat right away by my server who was lovely during the entire experience. When I ordered my drink, he brought it out right away. Then when I asked how spicy the Kung Pao Lo Mein was, he said it was spicy but he could ensure the chef made it a bit milder if that would be ideal for me. I definitely loved that he gave me the option right away & the dish was absolutely delicious and didn't make my eyes water so I appreciated the flexibility there. My water was refilled immediately as well which was incredible. All in all, a great experience at a lovely restaurant. I highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area. read more

This is the 3rd time have been here and this was a lousy meal. The first two times were good, but this visit was not. At first I tried to convince myself that I should learn what a restaurant does well and what to avoid. After thinking about it, you are paying for a meal and "anything" on the menu should reflect quality. We got the Scallop Kaiyaki as an appetizer and it was spicy (as described on the menu), but the only flavor was the spice. For the entree we ordered one steak & lobster tempura and one scallop/lobster combination. The lobster & steak was my choice and the best part was the seaweed salad. The steak was overcooked and the lobster tail appeared like someone took a large shrimp and flattened it out and deep fried it. A lobster tail should be thick and moist. Mine was flat, stringy and completely dried out. My wife got the scallop & lobster combination. Same result. The tempura batter completely overwhelmed the food and when the waiter cleared our plates he noticed they were both filled with excess batter. The place was busy but I wonder how many people repeat. If their business is based on grabbing tourists, guess quality may not be an issue. However, as a local, was very disappointed with the flavor, quality and unappealing food. I tried this place out for dinner the other night. It's located in a great Back Bay spot on Boylston. They have sushi options as well as many other entree options. There are seafood, steak, chicken, duck, and vegetarian options. I recommend the Sizzling Seafood which has a combo of a few different seafoods and veggies and the Happy Family which combines pretty much every meat and seafood you can think of. If you are looking for Asian cuisine with a ton of options this place is worth a stop. read more

Not a satisfying meal (though it was delivery and quality obviously goes down when you include the wait time). Beef Vermicelli - Eh...not for me. Dumpling App - Not a fan (and I love dumplings). Bland and mushy. Pho - This was my order. I didn't place the delivery order, so first off, I was expecting chicken and not traditional beef style. However, that's not the restaurant's fault. I should make my preferences more clear next time :). However, I thought it was odd that they would include the (very limp and not appealing looking) slices of beef/brisket at the very bottom of a container, topped by a big chunk of noodles, topped by a handful of bean sprouts, topped by the basil and lemon wedge. I know they all end up in the same place, but I prefer my cold ingredients separated from hot until the point that I choose to combine them. Again, my fault for not knowing what I was getting myself into, but I was not a fan of the tendon aspect of the soup. It was okay, just not great. Some of the food was quite good, but one item was actually spoiled. The service was polite, but incredibly inattentive and disorganized. We were still charged for the rotten food item, and the restaurant forgot to indicate on Open Table that we had shown up, causing a no-show to appear on our account. We arrived, were seated, and then waited approximately 15-20 minutes before anyone even showed up to take an initial order. We wanted to start with a drink, salad, and then sushi. No one came by to give us water--which was irritating, as we watched them fill up glasses at every single table around us. The sushi arrived first, and the soy sauce container ran out. We asked and then waited another 15 minutes for more soy sauce--we also had to ask again for our drinks. The salads were very good, as was most of the sushi--but I was served rotten uni. I pointed this out to our waiter, who politely apologized, telling me that he would inform the chef. I understand that places can get busy, things get hectic, and mistakes can happen--but this is the sort of thing that could easily result in someone getting seriously ill. I did not appreciate being charged for a food item that was outright garbage dump RANK. I wish this place was better organized--it clearly has some good things going for it, but at this point, I wouldn't feel comfortable going again or recommending it to anyone else, especially when there are so many great options for Japanese/Pan-Asian cuisine all over the place. read more

The last time I ate here was so long ago, it was before they renovated and still looked like something out of the late 80s/early 90s with coral and light teal accents. I always remembered it as being OK; it also seemed bigger, but sometimes bigger is not better. I came here the other day for lunch with a friend, and was glad it was good. It's all swanky black, red, and shoji-screened now, with a cool waterfall wall. I had the lettuce wraps and baby dinosaur roll (they should have called it dinosaur jr.). Both were good, and filling enough to get me through the rest of the day. She had the sashimi lunch; her son had tofu and rice. The staff was relatively helpful, not hoveringly attentive, and cool about a small person getting sticky rice all over the place. It's nice that you can eat outside, or inside with the windows opens. However, the fly that kept bugging us was not nice, or swanky. But it's a safe choice since the variety of the menu is actually a good thing. There's so many Japanese restaurants around there that I'm sorry to be whatever about the place, but I do like that there's a lot of options--if you want pad thai and sushi rolls. I'm also glad that they have bun, since I really miss having Pho in the Back Bay. read more

Hands down, the WORST "Asian" restaurant I've ever dined at for sure. The menu items were over-priced and apart from the sushi, everything else was 2 stars in flavor. Our servers were polite, but had zero knowledge whatsoever of the menu items. His "Freshest" recommendation for sushi? "Er....the spicy tuna roll?" 1) New England roll & Typhoon roll = Both quite delicious and interesting combinations. However, small and not memorable. Over-priced for sure. 2) WORST chicken pad thai I've ever tasted. For $10, you have a plate full of sour noodles with 3 pieces of shrimp and microscopic chicken bits. Go to a real Thai restaurant for Pad Thai man... 3) Miso marinated sea bass entree - Fish was seasoned well but it was for SURE frozen and spongy (GROSS!!). For $14 I wouldn't get this dish again. 4) Appetizer soft-shell crab - Soggy crab and tiny portion. The crab didn't even take up half the plate. $10??? Go get a giant plate of calamari from Chinatown. By the way, they even check ID to make sure YOU are the person who bought the coupon (we had an Open Table coupon)!!! Who the heck cares? Went to Typhoon last night -- mainly because it was the only restaurant that had no wait time. Plus I always thought the sign out front was cool. Anyway, overall it was good. We ordered spicy tuna and salmon maki; I only had the spicy tuna, and it was yummy. My friend thought there was too much rice and not enough tuna though. I stuck to the lo mein for dinner which was just what you expect. The only problem with this place is that there's nothing special about it; nothing really stands out. I had a BuyWithMe Voucher, so I decided to try this place out for lunch over the weekend with a few friends. We ordered the Deluxe Sashimi Sampler, the Dinosaur Roll, Curry Beef, and Pad Thai. Not bad for a pre-voucher discount price of $50. And definitely more food than 3 people could handle. The meal came with a choice of Miso or Hot and Sour Soup for each of us. My friends got the Miso and I got the Hot and Sour. I didn't try the former, so I cannot really comment, but the Hot and Sour was on the salty side. It must have over-reduced in their warmer. The sushi was very fresh and tasty. I especially enjoyed the salmon hand roll that came with the sashimi platter and the dinosaur roll. The pad thai and the curry were just meh for me. The pad thai was a tad bland, as was the curry. Also, the curry came with water chestnuts, which is not a common curry mix-in, so it definitely brought the dish down more for me as I am not a fan of the chestnuts. Overall, I'd be back for the sushi, but probably not the cooked foods. read more

Been twice, first time on a date, second time with a group of friends. Decor: black and red oriental, dark wood and a soothing waterfall, sushi bar, small tables: I'd say it's good for small groups or couples, not so much for big parties. First time sat towards the back and had the Typhoon Steak. It was sizzling hot and tasted amazing. My date had sushi and she also loved it. Service was great and they have an extensive drink list (she had a flaming Lamborghini) although they seemed a little overpriced. Second time around there were more of us and the quality degraded just a tad, but it was still a solid performance. Everyone's food came out together, but mine was a lil cooler than I would have liked. Can't quite remember what I had so it wasn't as memorable, but I remember still being satisfied. Had a drink that I felt was pretty overpriced, but not unusual for this caliber a place. We made a reservation the same day and were accommodated, but when we arrived we were sat down a little too close to the kitchen (it was really hot). We asked to be moved and they did without any question. All in all, I would highly recommend this place for small groups or couples (friends, or dates). read more

It's a beautiful place inside, but once you open the menu you see every bastardization of Asian food advertised as Asian Fusion. Except the sushi. The sushi is at least pretty and tastes normal. My monthly dinner group ate here on a Friday evening in February. RATINGS Food 3 Service 3.5 Décor 3.5 Overall 3.25 SUMMARY Typhoon Asian Bistro was squarely middle of the road, with some diners very satisfied, while others were left wanting for more. One of the issues with an Asian Fusion restarauant is whether it can deliver across the board when it comes to food genres, and given the reviews, Typhoon seems to have come up short. While on the one hand, some diners felt that Typhoon has "consistently raised the quality of the food and atmosphere," with high praise for the dragon maki, spicy crab and calamari, and crispy chicken entree. The pho, pineapple fried rice and striped bass were described as either lacking flavor, or only tasting like ginger, to the exclusion of all else. The cocktails were also a steady mixed blend. The decor and service fared better, with a comfortable interior that wasn't overdone, and only a few hickups with dealing with our medium/large group. Unfortunately, without coming through on the food quality, some felt that this restaurant couldn't overcome it's Boylston street location as more of a Tourist Trap. DINER COMMENTS I enjoyed the warm, comfortable interior, and thought it was well-designed without feeling garish. I'm also apprehensive about Pan-Asian places being able to deliver convincingly, let alone well, on their menu items, which is one thing I do enjoy about Typhoon; I found my chicken was crispy, and found the sauce flavorful. The sushi I had as an ap was exactly what I wanted, though not especially memorable. The one thing I'd have preferred from the evening was the timing for the different courses; our group wasn't especially large, so I find it a bit surprising how uncoordinated the delivery of the food was for both the appetizers and the entrees. In both instances that 2 or 3 people were served well after the rest of the group. When we've had larger groups, I feel like it's more understandable, but I think with 7 people that could've been executed better. -- While I liked the interior and the service was friendly and accommodating, the food was very middle the road. The Pho was flat and flavorless, and my avocado salad was lacking crabstick and served in a martini glass, which feels very 10-years-ago. The "meh" food and gimmicky presentation made the place feel like a tourist trap, not a good restaurant. I was disappointed overall. -- I found the service to be friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere was modern without being overdone. Everything I ordered was incredibly one-note, and that note was GINGER. I love ginger, but this was so gingery, that it made my teeth hurt. Between the over seasoned salad and the cloyingly sweet Striped Bass, I was on ginger overload. There was so much ginger on my plate, that I found it difficult to finish my entree. I enjoyed my French 75, but the Flaming Lamborghini was a gimmick shot. -- I've been eating at Typhoon occasionally for at least a dozen years. The food has always been good but the current menu is better than ever. They have consistently raised the quality of the food and atmosphere. My dragon roll was a double helping of my favorite maki. Too much of a good thing isn't enough. The spicy calamari and crab appetizer was perfectly fried and perfectly spicy. -- I wasn't particularly impressed with the food. To me it seemed pretty middle-of-the-road Chinese fare. Admittedly, that could have everything to do with the particulars of my order. The cocktails and the service were good, but not remarkable, and I suppose the same could be said for the decor. Not a bad restaurant, just not something worthy of much remark. In the restaurant's defense it takes a lot to impress me where Asian cuisine is concerned. -- This was the first time I've eaten at Typhoon. I had two different maki rolls for app and dinner, and both were delicious and fresh, though I agree with Jason's comment that the timing of dishes coming out of the kitchen was uneven, with sushi dishes coming out much later than the other apps and entrees. This seemed surprising for a restaurant listing sushi as a core part of the menu. It also seemed that the wait staff, while very friendly and pleasant, wasn't great about the timing of taking drink and dinner orders. I came in for dinner with with my boyfriend once before and had a great meal. So we decided to check it out again. We were quickly seated on a Saturday night. The lights were dim and the vibe was cool. The restaurant makes good use of its space having a sushi bar on one side with waterfall wall on the other and the tables are nicely spread out. So I decided to go with the crispy pad Thai, a previous time had the normal pad Thai that was excellent but wanted a change. My boyfriend got the a la carte sushi. The food arrived quickly. My crispy pad Thai was out of this world! If you have never tried it, you must! The chicken and shrimp in it were so tasty and against the crunch of the noodle, it was delish. I highly suggest it. My boyfriend's sushi came out looking very creative. I tried a salmon roll and liked it. He had a taste of my entree and insisted on alternating bites with his meal till we finished it cause the portion was huge. We left so satisfied. The service was very friendly. Typhoon is the closest choice for chic sushi to my digs, so we opted for an early dinner here when the inevitable urge for raw fish hit me. Pretty solid. Decor is nice: clean and minimal but not particularly creative. Because the missus is less of "if it swims, take a bite out of it" type as I, we started with some Tempura and dumplings. The Tempura was standard, but not outstanding, and the dumplings were Thai style rather than Gyoza style. I guess that could have been anticipated seeing as though it was an Asian bistro, rather than a straight sushi place. All of the sushi we ordered (maki and sashimi) was very good. We also got some Singapore style street noodles, which we should have passed on, because a.) They were a $16 plate of pad thai b.) were not very good, really bland c.) We were too full to eat them so we gave them to some homeless chick in front of CVS. Next time, Ill do sushi only, and I think this would be a 4 star experience. read more

I really wanted to eat Asian food on our one night in Boston, so I consulted Yelp to locate some spots near our hotel. It was tough to distinguish what was a "joint" from somewhere that actually had atmosphere, which was what we were going for. And of course, as a vegetarian, I wanted to go somewhere with lots of options for me and that had nime chow, which was my true craving. Typhoon Asian Bistro fit the bill perfectly-- Yelp reviews indicated it was a bit upscale when compared to lots of neighboring spots and it even had a separate vegan menu! I have to say, Typhoon Asian Bistro really served its purpose-- it turned out to have wonderful food, a great atmosphere, excellent service, and a perfect location! I have already proclaimed that when we return to Boston, I want to return to this exact restaurant! We were seated immediately-- in fact, it was pretty empty when we arrived. It was decorated beautifully, and had tons of winter-wonderlandish accents and decorations. Our waitress was extremely attentive throughout the evening, and overall, our food came out very quickly each time as well! To drink, I enjoyed some piping hot green tea. Off of the vegan menu (which I did have to ask for), we ordered tofu fresh rolls and vegetarian tofu lettuce wraps to start. The fresh rolls were yummy; they were packed with tofu, rice noodles, mint and a few other veggies and were served with a thick peanut sauce that we slathered on with each bite. Usually, when we order fresh rolls, the order comes with two rolls cut in half, but this order had three rolls, which was a pleasant surprise! We polished them off no problem. The lettuce wraps were equally delicious. The filling consisted of water chestnuts, peas, carrots, and tofu stir-fried in a delicious sauce. The lettuce wraps were fresh also. My husband ordered sushi for his entrée; I had the best Kung Pao Tofu with brown rice. I have had Kung Pao Tofu a few times, but it is hard to find on Asian menus in my experience. I will always order it if I do see it though, because I love peanuts in my stir fries. The last time I had it back in Rhode Island, it was just OK-- here at Typhoon, it was amazing! The tofu was plentiful and nicely textured. The sauce had a wonderful spicy kick to it, and the veggie mix of celery and bell peppers was crisp and flavorful. The portion was generous too, and I was sad I couldn't take it home since we were out of town! Since the food was so delicious, I committed myself to having dessert there too. I ordered their "ice cream on hot cake," which was basically vanilla ice cream on a warm brownie with chocolate sauce. The first thing I noticed about it was the beautiful presentation, as the chocolate sauce was swirled on in an intricate pattern, and the whole dessert was crowned with a fresh flower. The brownie was moist inside, crispy outside and nicely warmed. The ice cream was thick and smooth. In other words, it was the perfect brownie sundae. I am almost in shock at how much Typhoon Asian Bistro exceeded my expectations since oftentimes in Boston, restaurants have disappointed me in the past. It's so easy to go to one of the thousands of restaurants in Boston that seem to look good, only to find they are overpriced and overrated. This was a cute little Asian fusion restaurant on Boylston St. I would have given it more stars if it were worth the price. I paid 35$ for a roll of unagi, a Mongolian Beef dish with rice, and a Thai Iced Tea. The Mongolian Beef tasted like an ordinary beef dish from Chinatown that I could have gotten for 8$. The Unagi roll was only 6$, which was decent. All in all, I think I paid double what I would have paid if I were to eat this kind of food at any other restaurant. Also, the Mongolian beef was one of the cheaper dishes on the menu. Things were way overpriced- 39$ for lobster with garlic sauce? 44$ for Peking Duck? Madness! The service was good though, although there was literally no one else in the restaurant except for our group. It was empty on a Sunday night. The atmosphere is also nice. Overall it was just an overpriced restaurant with mediocre food to me. read more

I've been to Typhoon several times, pretty much only for sushi. Its a great spot because, for some reason, the tourists of Back Bay seem not to populate it. I have never had to wait for a table and can usually sit outside right away if I want. The atmosphere is nice, if not a little empty (aka: not lively), but sometimes you don't really even want the crowd anyway. I've always had decent service here, nothing amazing but nothing appalling. The cocktails are good with a big selection of tropical inspired drinks . One of them is even served in a coconut. Most recently I tried the "Spicy Martini" which was strong and not sweet, exactly what I love. I always get sushi here and find the fish to be very fresh. I am not big into the rolls and normally stick with sashimi so the freshness is really what I am judging on. This is one of the few/only places in the area that still gives you the option to order with a mini pencil off of an ale carte sushi menu, so thats a nice option if you want to customize. The few cooked dishes I have tried have been just OK. The prices are lower here compared to similar Japanese/Sushi places in Back Bay and you can always get a welcome table. I would recommend Typhoon for when you want some fresh sushi in Back Bay without the crowd and high price. read more

This place is ridiculous. If you have a Guiltcity be fare warned that they cut your portions in half and treat you poorly. Went in and "didn't make a reservation" so the manager told me I had to pay for everything and that the voucher wasn't good. There were 3 people in the restaurant so I said okay I'll just make a reservation for now and he said no I'm going to call the cops. It was really a great dining experience. I even offered to pay whatever the difference was of my food and he said no. Not sure why anyone would run a business like this but it is the WORST. read more

During my waitressing days, I always made it a point to work at restaurants that I loved. It makes it easier to provide efficient service when you love the food. The menu at Typhoon was extensive when I worked there in 2004-2005, and I don't doubt it remains that way to this day. I learned a great deal about various Asian cuisine because we served dishes from Japan, China, Thai, and Vietnam. I've always loved the range of food at Typhoon. You could go simple and order a pad thai, or get a little fancy and order a steak or salmon plate. More than anything, I loved the sushi. Good sushi was hard to come by in Boston, and Typhoon gave me my daily fix. Customers used to come in and order special rolls and have them deep fried, creating another signature dish! One that I'll never forget is the deep fried Philadelphia roll. Drizzled with eel sauce, I will never forget how addicted I had become to this roll. We used to have wasabi wars, using yellowtail sashimi. I always loved the Pho, the baked salmon rolls (Danny, the owner, uses an amazing special sesame sauce to top it off with), the New Zealand lamb chops, the spicy deep fried shrimp, and of course the fried ice-cream. I ate here a while ago with two co-workers during our lunch break in between meetings, and was relatively unimpressed. It took much longer to take our order than it should have, but the food was really decent. I got a really good chicken basil thai dish that was slightly greasy, but good for lunch. It was a little more expensive than the other thai places in the area, and with that being said, the portions weren't as generous as they could be......if you're paying $13-$16 for lunch, you should have leftovers. The atmosphere was good (they have a wall of water, which really just inspired me to pee) but it wasn't wowing by any means. There was a pile of napkins on the table right where we were seated. This place is okay, and I mainly see people on dates here. I wouldn't choose it for such, unless the drinks as stellar, which I haven't tried. read more

There are many dishes that look so good on the menu and we had a hard time to select a dish that seemed to be the best. Typhoon has a happy hour from 5 - 6.30 which one drink means 1/2 price on one app. Hmm sound good to me, and I love HAMACHI-KAMA and SPICY SCALLOP MAKI. And for the entree I really love rack of lamb, it is so yummy. So now you might be wondering why the place got 3 stars. Well, it's because the services weren't good. The server poured water over my friend, not a lot of it but she didn't realize that. And when they took the dishes from us, they just reached their hands through table and our party which they could walk around and got the plates without disturbing us. This place is my number one favorite restaurant in Boston. Working at the Pru results in many a-lunch spent at Typhoon. It's usually 'dead' during lunchtime (1-3ish), but I am wondering if that has something to do with the INCREDIBLY fast service. Sushi is usually served within 10-15 minutes (tops!!!) and is ALWAYS delicious. I've also placed orders for takeout and it's just as good as dining in. Freshly prepared and yummy, yummy, yummy when I bust into it at home for dinner. Their Crispy Pad Thai is one of (if not) the best I've ever had anywhere. Not fishy, very peanutty. Regular Pad Thai is also super delicious. I really want to try their Coco Chicken (chicken cooked in exotic coconut sauce) but I always seem to default to a plethora of sushi (LOVE the Yam Maki + Scallop Maki!!!). Friends of mine have tried pork, shrimp, and chicken dishes and never walk away unsatisfied. Also, their Miso Soup was unbelievable. I actually had dinner there last night around 9pm. There were a few tables open -- no problem getting a seat whatsoever. The Yam Maki was lacking (tempra slightly thicker than usual). I mentioned this to our waiter and he was more than happy to have the chef remake them. He even gave us a free roll! I was STOKED. 5 minutes later we were graced with warm, delicious Yam Maki fit for a king. Eaters beware. You WILL lose your paychecks to this place! Not because it's outrageously priced (it's NOT -- very affordable), but because you will be craving their Sushi creations as if it were chocolate. The atmosphere is pleasing -- dark, tables (no booths), sushi bar, outdoor seating, window seating, and an indoor waterfall wall (subtle but a nice touch). read more
