I had the Typsy Burger with pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes and will most certainly have it again!

Comfort food is a thing even a foodie craves, and on this particular day, I was craving it!…read more After spending a couple of days in Atlanta, I was heading home to Charlotte on I-85 when I spotted the Cracker Barrel sign in Anderson. Suddenly, all I could think about was country fried steak -- or chicken fried steak, as I grew up calling it. Decision made. Exit highway. Find dinner. I ordered the Country Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and corn. That's my comfort-food trifecta. The steak had that crispy, craggy coating I was hoping for, with creamy country gravy on the side. The mashed potatoes were exactly what mashed potatoes should be, the corn was simple and sweet, and everything arrived hot and FAST. Nothing fancy here. Just straightforward, satisfying food that hit the spot. I stuck with ice water and lemon and skipped appetizers and dessert. The portions are generous, and I still had more than an hour of driving ahead of me. A giant comfort-food dinner followed by a long highway drive can be a dangerous combination for my eyelids! The service was one of my favorite parts of the stop. My waitress was friendly, attentive and genuinely personable. She even complimented my white shirt -- and I appreciated that she noticed the details. She had a good eye! There was also something charming about the atmosphere. I was clearly a traveler passing through, while the restaurant felt wonderfully local. Servers and guests were chatting back and forth, people seemed to know one another, and those lovely South Carolina accents were in full force. It felt less like an interstate pit stop and more like I had wandered into the neighborhood gathering place for dinner. And then I discovered the take-home meal deal. For around $5 with the purchase of an entrée, I could take another meal home, so naturally I chose the meatloaf. Brilliant idea in theory. My travel schedule had other plans, and I was back on the road before I ever ate it. Poor planning on my part. Next time, straight into the freezer! There's plenty of dedicated parking, prices are excellent, portions are generous, service was warm, and my food came out hot and quickly. For a road-trip dinner, I couldn't ask for much more. I'll be heading toward Atlanta again soon, and I'd happily make another Cracker Barrel stop along the way. Sometimes you don't need trendy, complicated or fancy. Sometimes you just need crispy country fried steak, mashed potatoes, corn and gravy. And this absolutely did the trick. Life is too short not to eat well, so get out there and find your next meal.

Out and about on a Saturday about 1 pm and had a gift certificate for Cracker Barrel. Don't eat…read morehere a lot because it's not the hubby's favorite, but the gift store always calls my name. It was a treat to go to CB when I was a kid...something magical about the store at the front of the restaurant. Although I rarely buy anything it is always fun to browse. The staff is usually so friendly-true Southern hospitality. Not necessarily a healthy menu but you can enjoy true Southern comfort food. Emily was my server. She checked on me several times. She was very courteous and attentive but didn't hover excessively. I had the NY Strip Steak, a loaded baked potato, fried okra and a cornbread muffin and a biscuit. It was all good. The only think I would skip next time is the peach lemonade. (It tasted "fake.") I treated myself to a hot S'mores Coffee to finish off my meal. It was sooooo good-dessert and coffee rolled into one delicious yummy concoction. Always good for a Southern comfort food experience and Southern hospitality.
