Could not love this place more! The best smash burger in Wichita. I'd also give them the award for the best fries in Wichita, which may need a little salt added, but that's probably good for those who don't need as much sodium as I think I do. They make their own patties and cut fresh fries, not just ordering off the Sysco truck. I love the atmosphere, but I'm a sucker for an authentic dive, so if you think a place is dirty because there may be some strategically placed duct tape covering a tear in the vinyl, it might not be for you. Ty's has been around since the 50's but is one of those places you won't stumble upon if you are not in the know. I was born in Wichita and have a lot of family here so I started coming as a kid. They are only open for lunch Tuesday through Saturday, so it is not somewhere I frequent on my visits. My last trip, I was leaving on a Thursday and met my Papa for lunch. The burgers were just what I remember. It is a smash style burger, pressed on a flat top to maximize the flavor and texture. It is a thin patty, but a tasty one. It is a simple burger, but hits all the spots. What REALLY gets me are the rings. Good golly they know how to make some onion rings. They're perfection. It is everything you hope your order of onion rings will be, but rarely are. Ty's is a small places that is well worn and comfortable. My last visit, the clientele was mostly made up of mature people and police officers. Typically a demographic who knows where to find a tasty meal and a good value. Place was very small and very busy but they did a great job getting us in and out quickly during a lunch rush. The place is exactly what you'd expect from a 70 year old diner. Lots of kitsch to look at, old timey booths, and a greasy spoon atmosphere. Looks to be some ties to classic cars. Lots more character than any chain type place for sure. The food was fresh, hot, and delicious. It was a very small menu with maybe 8 different burgers and a couple of apps and side choices. The burgers were juicy and crispy. They were not smash burgers but they still had the crunchy edge to them. It was really good. Prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge. Big burgers and full baskets of fries. We shared the fries/rings between 2 of us and there were some left. The fries are hand cut daily according to the menu and they were definitely not food service frozen style. The staff was excellent. Extremely nice and even though they were slammed they were cool under pressure and did not rush us. Our waitress checked on us the right amount and kept our drinks full. definitely were not frozen food service type. We also had the mushroom app and it was ok, nothing bad but pretty average. I spent over 30 years in Wichita and somehow never made it to this place until today. GREAT burger, right up there with the best I've ever had. We each had a double w/cheese, mustard, pickle, tomato, grilled onions, luttuce. They were made the way we like them, old fashioned thin style, crispy, and butter toasted buns. The fries and homemade onion rings were also great. They also serve canned beer. Service was great, everyone was nice even though they were very busy. Ambiance is your typical "hole in the wall" type of place but we liked it. Glad we finally made it to Ty's. read more

Pretty much everything you read is true. The Man Up was a good burger, but mine was near impossible to pick up and eat as it was falling apart. Perhaps if I delete the lettuce. I've never understood having shredded iceberg lettuce on a hamburger anyway--a whole leaf or two maybe, but not shredded. I will give Ty's another try however. read more

This place is not a fancy place with gourmet burgers. And, you will likely smell like greasy burgers when you leave here because the kitchen is not really separate from the eating area. That said, I still love going here. Used to frequent it when I worked downtown in the 90's but don't get there as often now since it's only open for lunch. Their burgers are thin patties, not thick ones, so keep that in mind...everyone has their preference. I love the Ultimate cheeseburger with fried onions and mushrooms, bacon, & jalapeños on it because I am gluten & dairy-free, so all the toppings make up for no bun and cheese. :) Their mushroom swiss burger with sour cream is my actual favorite but my diet prohibits ordering that any more...same with their fried mushrooms which I just love! They also have Frings which is a 50/50 combo of onion rings and fries...but are a big serving for sharing. Great old time burger hole-in-the-wall...try it out when you don't have an important business meeting right after. Or just keep some Febreeze on hand! read more

Located downtown near Delano. This is an awesome "hole in the wall" place for a great no fuss burger and fries open only during lunch hours. There is not a lot of seating space, so be prepared for a little wait. The corn nuggets are a great appetizer. We always order a basket of fries to share. Looking at the crowd that lines up for the three and a half hours Ty's is open and the pictures of other classic Kansas burger joints like Topeka's Bobo's Drive in and Salina's Cozy Inn, you would expect Ty's to make a pretty mean burger. Sadly, it's not particularly different than the standard set by most other good burger places in the city - same plain white bun, lettuce, tomato, mustard, homemade fries that are undercooked and greasy - but the thing that distinguishes it from other restaurants isn't an improvement - the very thin patties, which were so smooshed of their essence that they were simultaneously dry and and greasy. Burger makers of Wichita, the only time your spatula should come in contact with the patty while during the cooking process is to flip it. Smashing, flattening, or squishing the meat rarely improves the final product. Aside from the patties, you could probably place a burger and fries from Sport Burger, Ty's, TJ's, and several other Wichita burger institutions in front of me and I would be hard-pressed to tell them apart. It's nice that we have so many above average burger offerings, but they're all very similar, and I'm beginning to get jaded spending all my time seeking these places only to be rewarded a product that suffers from the same weaknesses time and time again. Burger was great, fries great but a little undercooked, price reasonable, however the atmosphere was not desirable at all. A Wichita tradition for 50 years = run down looking dump that looks like it's about to fall over. Bathroom was like a truckstop; instant I walked in the front door I was hit with the strong haze of smoke from the grill and the cigs at the bar... If you like the smokey "Route 66" truckstop feel this is the right place for you! The service was friendly and the food was real fast! They dont accept debit cards, only cash or check, which is another indicator of their AGE... but what was embarrasing was that I had no cash on me, so I had to run to the QT ATM and come back, but they were real nice about it. Well, me and my friend haven't been to this place in years. For some reason it just didn't taste the same. We were trying to figure out why. It was either the seasoning on the meat or something but we were a bit disappointed. However to me the fries were still good and greasy!! Ty's Burgers are well worth the wait and I always try to arrive before 12 to avoid the lines. Sit up at the bar and you can get served quickly. The burgers and thin and delicious and a double isn't too big for most appetites. Personally I enjoy a "thin" burger and it just depends what you are in the mood for. The onions that come with the burger are good as are the fresh hand cut French fries. Be prepared to enjoy the smell of Ty's in your clothes for the rest of the day. read more

That almost perfect burger and fries but the restaurant diner needs to be more clean on the inside of the restaurant. Cleanliness of a restaurant is the most important thing cause if it isn't clean then it makes you wonder how clean they are when the doors are closed. I have been to this local establishment a bunch of times and the food they serve is above average in that aspect of things.The veggies are cut perfectly and the fries are fresh cut.The Cheeseburger is always delicious and fresh they cook it right when order is placed. After going there the last few times and watching how they do things it's makes you think more in depth. One guy is doing the fries with No Hair Net Over The Fries! He has A Long Beard and we All know that beards are not always clean and sometimes contain dandruff like the head of someone's head to small piece of hair falling off of beard.Ewww Yuck! Then the guy (owner) is flipping burgers he is using plastic gloves but when he isn't doing anything he is standing away from burgers leaning up against counter running his hand fingers under counter to kill time.It makes you wonder what's under the counter ewww yuck! Coworkers brought me to Ty's. I've been in Wichita for 18 years and have never heard of this place. It's in an unassuming and surprising location - very residential. Don't trust the menu online. Prices are much higher once you get there. Fries are decent but don't deserve the praise they are giving them. When I ordered they charged me for cheese and didn't actually have it on the burger. The burger itself looks as if they are attempting to make a Freddy's steak burger, but the flavor leaves something to be desired. They seem to be under the impression that they don't need a website but considering you can build and make a website for around $20 now days it comes across as though they are lazy or don't care about marketing to a new generation. I would normally give a rating of maybe 2-3 stars for them, but due to the many nameless 5-star reviews posted on google all around the exact same time, it has convinced me they cheated their way to a higher rating and don't deserve anything but the lowest rating. Well I love a good Burger Joint but I have had better burger than Tys in Wichita. I love the large old bar that they have and the friendly service you always get. They can handle larger crowds than most Burger Joints in town and are normaly crowded for lunch. I have been here two times and like their fries but feel the burgers are better than fast food but not the best around. The burgers could be bigger, thicker and they taste just plain with no special flavor. Sorry, but i'm just not quite a fan! read more

For me, Ty's has become a weekly lunch hour haunt. I originally went just because it's "a Wichita tradition since the 50's" and it is close to my office. They are often pretty busy, but the wait doesn't seem unreasonable and they usually have spots open at the bar, which is perfect for when it's just me and maybe one other. Their food by itself is a good enough reason for me to continue dining there. Their burgers and fries are always brought to me hot and fresh, and is much better than fast-food chains for maybe just a little more money. The real hook for me, however, is the staff; I like good, personal service. During my first visit, they were very friendly and genuine, and on my second visit over a week later, they remembered me by name and were just as friendly and genuine. Over time, I've noticed that they are that way with many others, not just myself, and I appreciate that kind of effort. Here's the math: reasonable price + no wait/short wait (at the bar) + good food + good staff + their personal effort = a great place for me to spend my lunch hour! Highly recommended. read more

I have read some of the negative reviews and I have to say there seems to be some grumpy people dining out. I love the old burger joint feel. The burgers are very good! This is not a designer burger place, so they serve traditional burgers and fries and other food that compliments this establishment. This is a locally owned place ran mostly by family! I have bee eating here for 20 plus years. Please remember family run! If you want designer burgers or fast food go to those establishments.
