My appointment with Dr. Ip confirmed my suspicion that I had Carpal Tunnel symptoms in both hands following an electrical test to determine their severity. As I was just changing Hypertension medication, I wanted to wait until it was regulated and he agreed that should come before CT Surgery. I requested that it be performed with a local rather than general anesthesia & he accommodated me. The procedure went smoothly and he also handled my trigger finger at the same time. I had a couple of visits, and he took the time to go into detail about my X-rays and the plan to make the healing process smooth. OK, I smashed my left thumb with a hammer and did a lot of damage. I went to Hoag Irvine emergency department. They did a great job fixing me up but recommended. I see Dr. Ip for follow up. I read the reviews on yelp and didn't have a great impression. He seems to have quite a few bad reviews. However, I had to complete opposite experience. He was very personable, and spent quite a bit of time with me. He was genuinely concerned about my thumb. He provided great advice and took the time to listen to me. After reading the reviews, I was a bit apprehensive. However, since I am retired, I figure I could afford to wait if necessary. I care about performance more than administrative. As it turns out, I did not have to wait long at his Irvine office. Wait time of course is relative. I could care less about a specialist's bedside manner as long as he is a good surgeon. He is not my primary doctor who i expect a relationship with. He was very professional and shared honest comments of my hand. I had huge cyst removed from my left wrist and he fixed my trigger 'thumb'. Surgery went very well. Afterwards, I communicated with his office via Mychart asking questions. When I met with him again, he did not spend much time with me but he did not have to. He told me everything about the current state of my hand along with what other hand problems I had along with my options. He authorized physical therapy for the hand and emphasized that I go to a hand therapist which i did. I would go to him again if I had another hand issue requiring surgery. read more

First off, if I could give ZERO STARS, I would. Let's start with a few words; unprofessional, rude, no bedside manner, couldn't be bothered, money hungry, impersonal and most of all, SUCKS! I have been struggling with Carpal Tunnel since being pregnant in 2020 and I was not relieved of the problem at any point after giving birth, so I decided I would try to see an Orthopedic doctor for some help and direction with pain management. I regret my decision to come to the Newport Orthopedic Institute. I made an appointment over the phone a week ago and since I hadn't heard back if my insurance was cleared for this place. So upon my arrival today it's the first thing I asked after I was directed to the Sports Medicine office within the building to see Dr. Tze Ip. I waited in the waiting area and filled out an additional form they had for me to write down what my concerns and issues were for the visit. I was never communicated with until it was time to go back (30 minutes later, mind you) and then the assistant couldn't help me, so I decided to wait for the doctor to ask again and once he came in first words were, "What can I do for you today?" Not "Hi, Hello, how are you today?, I read your paperwork and see you are struggling with CT...?" Really?! I immediately asked about the insurance, he then said, " I don't know?" and he walked out and said to someone outside the door that "she doesn't want to be seen if her insurance isn't covered" and went on to the next patient. No one came to the room to speak to me and he never returned. By the amount of patients waiting for this doctor, Tze Ip, I could tell he was the type to push as many patients on his schedule in a day that he could and all about his dollar bills and not people's actual health and body concerns and issues. If I could pick 0 for Dr. Ip, I would. I went in for pain in my left hand and trigger finger in right hand, yes I do have osteoarthritis, but at the age of 54 to be told there is nothing the doctor can or will want to do was so disheartening and depressing. I pointed out the pain, on the top of my hand and he focused on my fingers, and did not focus at all on my right hand. After begging, tearing up, and saying I have severe pain typing at work, which I type many notes for clients/patients he finally agreed to provide a note after saying I need to keep my fingers moving. Again, the pain and swelling is in the top of my hand. I work in mental health and can see why so many patients are left severely depressed and feeling hopeless after seeing a doctor like Tze Ip. I left crying from the appointment today feeling depressed, hopeless, and still in pain with no type of help in the future, which no one should leave in that way. Give patients hope and try to make the pain stop, not dismiss them. Patients are not there to see a doctor because they feel good...and physical and mental well being go hand in hand!! Based on recommendations from 2 different friends, I made an appointment to have my wrist examined. But then I saw many negative reviews and comments about Dr Ip on Yelp, and I became very apprehensive. Those worries were completely unfounded. I arrived for my 9:50am appointment 10 minutes early. They gave me a couple pages to complete (in addition to the medical history I had completed online before I arrived) and by the time I was done, I was called back to the exam room - 5 minutes before my appointment time!! The waiting room was full btw. In the exam room, his nurse confirmed my medical complaint and took me across the hall for a set of x-rays. We went back to the exam room, and Dr Ip came in within 5 minutes. He brought my x-rays up on the screen and thoroughly explained what they showed. He asked appropriate questions about my medical history and current level of activity and pain level. He proceeded to perform a physical examination of my hand and wrist. Finally he provided me with his diagnosis and recommendations. I inquired about getting an MRI and we discussed the benefit to risk ratio (what would we learn, and how would the plan change, compared to the cost). I chose not to get one. He gave me plenty of opportunity to ask questions and we agreed on my next steps. He was friendly, not rushed and kind of funny. Two weeks ago while running, I tripped, fell, and landed very hard on my right hand/wrist. Being in a lot of pain, I went to Urgent Care, where the x-rays showed that I had fractured my right distal radius, and displaced the bone (it was basically pushing toward the back of my wrist). Urgent Care referred me over to Dr. Tze Ip, and I was able to get squeezed in that same day. I had a good first meeting with Dr. Ip. We didn't spend a huge amount of time together, but it was more than sufficient. My entire conversation with Dr. Ip was completely professional and polite, so I don't understand what some of these other reviewers are complaining about. I wasn't there to be entertained. I was there to get my wrist fixed. He explained the need for surgery to have a titanium plate installed which would hold the radius in place, and he confidently answered all of my questions. Dr. Ip said that if he had only re-positioned the bone and put a cast on, that the radius would just start to move again and I wouldn't have as good of an outcome. I believe this is true, as I spoke with someone who tried going without surgery, and sure enough their radius bone started to move within just a few days, and they eventually had to have surgery and the titanium plate. So I do believe that Dr. Ip was acting completely in "my" best interest by recommending surgery. After getting back home, I read some of the poor reviews on Yelp, which did concern me somewhat, but my first impression was very good. I spoke with a couple of friends in the medical field about what they had heard about Dr. Ip, and they both said that he was an excellent surgeon. Frankly, with my immediate need for surgery, I didn't really have a lot of other options available, so I went forward with Dr. Ip. On the day of surgery, everything went super smoothly at the surgery center. Dr. Ip spoke with me prior to surgery, and the entire experience at the surgery center was excellent. So I am writing this review to set the record straight, and to relieve any apprehension that anyone might have in using Dr. Ip. This man does excellent work. Look at the photos I attached. You can see how expertly he properly aligned my radius. Look at the side view. It is absolutely perfect. It's been 10 days since surgery, and today, I went back for the bandages to be removed. The incision is clean and straight. Again, this doctor does not deserve bad reviews. He answers questions in a thorough manner. I asked several questions today, some more than once, and he was completely patient with me and had a very friendly disposition with me. Do yourself a favor: relax.... you're in very good hands with Dr. Ip. read more

He didn't give more than 30 seconds of talk, Had no idea what it would cost us, and didn't help point us in the right direction. We waited nearly an hour. I know this is not unsual, but at least pretend to be apologetic. Your time is valuable but please value our time by at least apologizing for the delay. But I would not be writing this review if that was the only issue. that's no big deal. If you made we wait that long, at least take the time to listen without being condescending and cutting people off. It was so frustrating bc he would cut you off in the middle of the question and could not be bothered with any more questions and rushed out. I kinda sat there dumbfounded that he would just leave. I should have read these reviews before I made the appt. It was really tough to get an appt with anyone at Newport Ortho. I called and waited 35 minutes and then had to hang up. I called again and waited about an hour on hold.... and finally gave up and asked for a call back. They called back in a few hours. I asked for the first available appt bc it was a bit urgent. They said Dr. Ip was the first one available. Again, should have known.... But I figured how bad could it be. Well, it was wasted time. I won't be returning to see him. I do wonder.... if he reads these reviews. I mean if only a few people have issues with his rudeness and inability to offer care, maybe it's on them. But if these many people have the same horrible experience, maybe someone at Newport ortho needs to let him know. I'm sure he won't lose his job. Maybe he's respected by his fellow doctors. But maybe he should reflect and try to improve. I recently broke my clavicle in a mountain bike accident and it was recommend that I see a doctor at the Newport Orthopedic Institute the day after my crash. The doctor I was supposed to see was busy that day so they scheduled me with Dr Ip. When he came in he barely even glanced at my x-ray and basically told me what I read online... that 90% of the time the clavicle will heal on its own and 10% of the time it will require surgery. He was in an out within just a few minutes and told me to come back in a month. I figured he knew what he was talking about because he sounded so confident and because he's a doctor. Each day that went by things got worse. After a week it looked like my bone was going to pop out of the skin. Things didn't seem right so I scheduled an appointment with the original doctor to get a second opinion. This doctor actually explained what was wrong and told me that it would require surgery. He showed me the X-ray and thoroughly explained where the places were broken and why it wasn't lining up... he even tried seeing if he could set it back in place with his hands. It didn't hold but at least he made an effort. After this he made sure my sling was properly adjusted and explained the road ahead. I could tell this doctor actually cared about my injury and wanted to make sure I knew what was going on. I really wish I never visited Dr Ip... I really don't understand how a guy like him is in a position to be helping people. If he would have at least put some effort in and spent more than 2 seconds glancing at my X-ray then I wouldn't be writing this review. He didn't bother explaining anything and it seemed like he just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. If I would have waited the full month to see him again (like he recommended) who knows what could have happened. read more

It happen when I was 13 years old I explained to him what my orthopedic surgeon said to me at that time before I could even finish he told me to shut up and he didn't need to hear anymore, but he thought my doctor was not accurate, and possibly a quack, or make matters worse that is very insulting to me, for my mother worked with my orthopedic surgeon for more than 20 years and died several years ago. never did he say sorry for your loss of friendship all he could do was take avenge on my previous orthopedics, lack of skills and knowledge. Remember my previous orthopedic surgeon was explaining to me at 13 years old so even if I was saying it wrong, he should've called him a quack are in accurate. What an asshole. I'm on my second round of care with Dr. Ip. 5 years ago he successfully removed a Gangalion Cyst. All went exactly as he said, and I was on my way. This time (5 years later), I went in with what I thought was a new cysts in a new location. He came in and within a few short minutes, informed me that I was wrong based on his testing of the joint. Sure enough, one MRI later, he was right. Surgery is being planned, but I would hesitate to say he has a bad bedside manner. He has a warm sense of humor if you let him, and I think he is quiet in nature. That shouldn't be a reflection on his bedside manner. He has always listened intently to my concerns regarding treatment and follow through is always wonderful. I think hes a great surgeon and we are lucky to have him!! read more

Just wanted to send a quick update. My nail fully grew out normally and 5 years later, the glomus tumor has not returned (so Dr. Ip likely got the whole mass). I'm so happy I saw Dr. Ip and will plan to go to him again if I ever have the need. I know others have commented on his bedside manner but he was always polite and attentive to me during our appointments, and before/after surgery. Completely condescending and unwilling to listen to me, cut me off while I was talking, told me my concerns about cost were unwarranted because I want to get the "best possible care". He made me feel like I was exaggerating my symptoms with Trigger Thumb and said all he could do for me was give me a cortisone shot. When I told him I don't do steroids or drugs, that it's either surgery or nature, his demeanor went from chilly to sub-zero. He told me he wasn't going to do surgery unless he felt it was needed, which I understood, so I tried asking him if there were alternatives for alleviating or reversing the condition. The next thing I know he got up out of his chair and was moving towards the door, giving me the shortest possible answers to my questions. As I was leaving the office I realized my insurance was going to be billed for a service I feel I never received so I tried calling the reception desk to express my disappointment yet out of 8 options there was no way to reach the desk and I was immediately disconnected every time. My 14 year old fractured her finger playing softball on a Sunday. I called Newport Orthopedic on Monday because I've always heard good things about their doctors. They had an appointment that afternoon with Dr. Ip so I went ahead and scheduled. After reading reviews I was semi concerned but knew I'd have to meet him myself to ultimately decide. I could not be more pleased with him. Yes, our appointment was a little delayed but that happens everywhere. I read comments about his bedside manner or not answering questions. He took the time to answer all of our questions and day of surgery (which he got her in 3 days later), his bedside manner was perfect. Also, he gave us both options for our daughter (surgical and non) and explained the pros and cons of both. We felt no pressure to choose surgery. Because she's a softball player injuries are expected. Knock on wood she never has to go through this again but if she does, I will call Dr. Ip without hesitation. read more

VERY pleased to write that Dr. Ip performed three separate surgeries on me in the last year with nothing but professionalism and competence. He's a fantastic surgeon and would highly recommend him to ANYONE. He removed a screw from my wrist that was difficult to access, due to an injury 25 years ago. He also performed two ulnar nerve transposition surgeries on my elbows, that increased my quality of life significantly. Was back to full activity, and playing golf in 4-5 weeks. I am surprised to see so many negative reviews of Dr. Ip and feel I should post my own experience with him. I went to Dr. Ip for Trigger finger of the right thumb. I didn't know what it was until he told me. Yes, the front office is rude and packed with people. I hope the receptionist gets a bonus because she deals with a lot. I wasn't happy with the hoops I had to jump through to get inside but I did forget my referral and had to have a friend fax it over. So my mistake. Once Dr Tze Ip came in he asked appropriate questions and diagnosed the problem. He suggested cortisone. I told him I didn't think that was effective for me because I'd had three shots in my foot and none helped, leaving me to have surgery. He took the time to explain the difference between shots in the hand and shots in the foot. He assured me he would put this shot in the perfect place. AND HE DID. One shot and the pain was gone. It's been several years, before Covid even, and my hand is working perfectly with no pain. read more

Dr. Ip is incredibly dismissive and arrogant. He immediately made me feel ill at ease because of his demeanor. During my five minute interaction, he repeatedly interrupted me as I described the disfunction and pain I have experienced with my hand and wrist. The interruptions weren't so he could ask vital, diagnostic questions of his own, but rather because he seemed to find it intolerable to listen to me speak. His response to almost everything I said was "Whatever" combined with an exaggerated look of either skepticism or grossly affected confusion. He made no effort to describe what might be the possible cause(s) which seems to be a combination of a complete deficit of caring and grossly obvious disinterest in patient outcome. Based on the handful of wholly irrelevant questions he did ask it was very clear he was more interested in making sure I knew he was the most important person in the room. If you do have an appointment with him so he can dismiss whatever it is you're experiencing make sure to act like you have zero understanding of human anatomy and like you don't know anything about your own body. He seemed to be threatened by someone other than himself possessing knowledge. This appointment was an encounter with rudeness and excessive ego, and a costly waste of time. read more

My 85 year old mother is being treated by Dr. Ip for a broken wrist. He has been compassionate and has provided great care as well as showed expertise. I'm in disbelief that these negative reviews are regarding the same doctor. I am a long time athlete of multiple sports and lost the ability to play many of them when I suffered a wrist injury. I broke my wrist unknowingly and lived this way with a completely halved bone for 7 years until I was referred to Dr. Ip. He told me I had a 50% chance of success with surgery. While this wasn't the best news I decided to go through with it and I am so glad I did. Today I have full range of motion in my wrist again, my bone is fully healed, and I am able to engage in all of my favorite sport and outdoor activities with confidence. Though he took exceptional care to mend my wrist seamlessly, my only dissatisfaction with this experience is the poor appearance of the scar on my hip from the use of staples instead of stitches. Still, this doesn't outweigh the gratitude I have for the great risk I took and trust I put in him for the success of this surgery. He was kind, encouraging, and honest throughout my entire time with him including visiting him monthly during my 9 months in a cast! read more
