A new lunch option in the neighborhood! Was walking out of the the office for lunch today and needed to try something new. A couple of the guys (my colleagues) taking a cigarette break out there and suggested I try Mau. They are a Vietnamese restaurant and, to be honest, I am not sure how long they've been in this location, but after trying them for the first time, I am glad they are here! I walked in and asked the gentleman behind the counter what he would recommend to a first-timer! After telling him that I was leaning towards a lunch plate (vs. sandwich or noodle bowl), he recommended the Grilled Lemongrass Pork or Chicken, so pork it was! The thinly cut pork shoulder is spiced and grilled just right. The rice was perfectly cooked and the pickled daikon, carrots and cauliflower added that extra flavor to the whole thing! Sadly they're only open for takeaway, so I'll have to hold off on getting a warm clay pot of caramelized fish. But much of the rest of their menu translates to to-go very well. I'm especially impressed by how tasty all the meats are. Hue Rolls: So much better than the light shrimp rolls you get at many Vietnamese restaurants. These are centered around thinly cut and heavily marinated grilled pork. So much meaty smoky goodness in each bite. The thick noodle-like wrap on the outside is also superior to this thin cellophane rice paper wraps typically used in rolls. All the veggies and herbs between the meat and noodles perfectly offset the richness. Bun Cha Ha Noi w/ Cha Gio: Meat overload! The rice noodles, herbs and lettuce were in the bowl. Thick grilled pork patties and thin marinated pork slices were in a container of tangy liquid on the side, with a few thin slices of carrots. Definitely more meat than any bowl you'd get preassembled. The pork slices were so full of flavor from their marinade to their grilling and finished with their soaking. The grilled pork patties were extremely hearty and nicely spiced. Also, liked the crispy cha gio add-on for even more pork indulgence, though quite filling with everything else. Only gripe would be that it felt a little salty, since I was super thirsty the rest of the afternoon. Xa Xiu Pork Banh Mi: Tons of crispy thick pork belly against all the expected trappings of a good Vietnamese sandwich. The bread was chewy and crusty. I like that the lightly pickled carrots and daikon were in thin discs rather than in in shredded form; gave it more texture. Lots of yummy fresh cilantro and a generous amount of mayo. There was also some sort of pork cold cuts, which added a good porky complement to the crispy pork belly. My only advice would be eat this all at once. I saved half for later and the pork belly lost its crispiness and the formerly crispy parts got rubbery. read more

The chilly SF weather called for noodle soup, so I came here with a friend around 6:30pm on a Monday to have some pho. There were a few occupied tables but we were seated right away after showing proof of vaccination. The decor is modern yet cozy, with earthy wooden tones and dim lighting. I'm a fan, but my favorite pho spots have always been hole-in-the-wall places with a homey ambience, so I was worried what the nice interior meant for the quality and serving size of my pho. I got my usual pho ga (chicken pho) and was pleasantly surprised with my bowl: the broth was rich with lots of chicken, and though the actual bowl itself was small, it was filled to the brim and I was more than satiated after finishing. The one thing they did skimp on a bit was the bean sprouts. I was also hoping for a stronger ginger flavour in the broth as stated in the menu description. At around $14, the price is pretty on par with other places in the city, which was also a nice surprise as I was expecting higher based on the ambience. I am a fan!! I live around the area and have been looking for a solid Vietnamese restaurant. There really aren't many here. Well.... Enter in Mau. The lady who took our order was so pleasant. It's also a mom and pop shop which is SO rare in FiDi now after covid essentially wiped out all of them. I hope they're able to stay long term, but with the food tasting this good... it shouldn't be a problem! Unfortunately I only speak to the chicken vermicelli bowl, but what a solid bowl. The chicken was so flavorful, juicy, and tender. A litttle bit on the fatty end, but I'd rather have that than lean and dry. They vermicelli and lettuce ratio was also on point. There are definitely some viet restaurants in the vicinity that give you the smallest vermicelli + heaping lettuce. All of the veggies tasted fresh. And lastly, they give you a cup of sauce which was the perfect amount as well (I tend to like saucy things.. so it's a *must* for me). The restaurant itself is a no frills place... clean tables and chairs.. nothing too fancy and pretty standard. The one thing that was odd was that the recycling bin had a "out of order" sign and we couldn't recycle. Like.. what? Would totally come back to try their other foods. Solid lunch spot. The service is quick, and my takeout was ready 15 minutes after I ordered it online at noon on a weekday. There are about 5 tables inside for eating in. I recommend ordering on the phone or in person. I think they didn't notice the instructions in my online order about my allergy, but when I brought it up in the restaurant, they were very quick to remedy the issue and prepare a new entree (sans allergen) for me. I had the bun thit nuong (grilled pork with vermicelli noodles). The meat marinade was very tasty and true to the dish. The noodles were cooked well. I wish there had been more noodles (relative to the amount of veggies), but this wasn't a dealbreaker. The portion size for the price ($15.50, incl. tax) was typical of a downtown lunch spot. The tastiest foods are the messiest right? MAU's banh mis are solid, and if you're working in FiDi this makes the PERFECT lunch. The only reason why this place is not a 5 star is cause the prices are INSANE. $14 on a banh mi, that's legitimately unheard of, especially for the authentic ones they're damn near always only half the price. Anything over $7-$8 (pushing it) usually just screams GENTRIFIED. Although this spot is $14 for a banh mi, I forgive them because gawd da*n those bad bois are delicious. Lemongrass pork is juicy and filled with flavor. The house spread is smothered all across the bread that is just the perfect baguette for banh mis truly. Their bread is definitely fresh as the outside is nice and crispy, but the inside is so soft. Just be prepared to ask for napkins. They only give you one, but you'll need more than that because the juice and sauces leak, and they really pack the sandwiches so everything is just constantly overflowing out after each bite. Great low key lunch spot. Tends to get busy around noon so either come early or be prepared to wait. There is indoor seating but it's limited. Their menu is basic but has all the goodies you want to be eating. From the Yelp photos before I think they used to serve noodle soups but now it's mainly banh mis, vermicelli bowls, and rice plates and no more noodle soups. I ordered the bun thit nuong with an added cha gio. Great serving size and very fresh. The noodles were springy and the veggies were plenty. The grilled pork was a little dry but the flavors were fantastic. Taste like something home made in my aunts kitchen. The cha gio is actually made from rice paper instead of egg roll paper and the filling was delicious. Pricing is more expensive than a traditional Vietnamese place but on par with the rest of the restaurants in downtown. I'd come back in a heartbeat. When hipster meets Vietnamese food, you get Mau! This means fancy cocktails and a *relatively* expensive food menu. I tried a couple of the dishes here and some are great, while some where pretty average. Depending on when you come to Mau, it can be pretty quiet (when nobody is inside) or it can be REALLY loud. When the restaurant is full of the Mission hipsters at dinner time, it can be pretty hard to have a conversation since the restaurant seems to insulate sound very well. There's a fair amount of seating, but depending on when you come - you may have to wait up to an hour (e.g. prime dinner time on the weekends). Of the dishes that I had, my favorite include the cha ca la vong, and the Hue rolls. The cha ca la vong is a Northern Vietnamese dish that features turmeric/dill catfish - it is served over vermicelli noodles and served with lettuce, picked veggies which you mix with the fermented fish sauce condiment. If you like, you can also ask for regular fish sauce (nuoc mam) which I prefer over the traditional fermented fish sauce. This dish is traditionally served with peanuts (as it is a Mau), so if you have a peanut allergy, I'd ask for the peanuts to not be served with it. This is probably my TOP dish here and it's reasonable at $14 since the portions are BIG. In addition, the Hue rolls (beef with a lot of herbs wrapped in rice skin, with nuoc mam dipping sauce) and are a great appetizer and fairly filling and definitely tasty. Recommend that too. I also had the pho here, which I don't really recommend since it was a bit bland for my taste. However, of the noodles... and to note, my friends really like the Bun Bo Hue here - which I tried their broth and it was quite tasty and had the right amount of kick and spice. Overall, the prices at Mau are more expensive for what you may be used for Vietnamese food. However, Vietnamese food in SF tends to be more expensive due to higher rent/cost of living. So I'm used to paying 10-11$ for a bowl of pho - so $14 for the cha ca la vong with pretty big portions is not too much more. Plus you're also paying for the ambiance and the trendiness of being in the Mission District. I've been coming here for a few years now, and would recommend Mau primarily for the cha ca la vong and Hue rolls dishes. To avoid a wait, I would recommend coming here during off-peak lunch/dinner times - that way it'll be less noisy and you can hear your friends/dates/S.O. while you guys eat. I'll definitely be back for my turmeric catfish here. :) read more
