We love the food and the service here. it's one of our favorite restaurants in our neighborhood.

We simply loved this place. The wait wasn't long, despite it being packed when we arrived. The staff was amazing. The place is small. They have packed in as many tables as they could in here. Yet it didn't feel crowded or like we would bump someone if we breathed. The food. That's what it's all about right? This place delivers. Every thing was as good as the last. They have a pretty extensive menu I wanted to try it all. Sadly I had to settle for Hot and Sour Soup, Wonton soup, Pork Xiao Long Bao 8 Pcs, Chicken Xiao Long Bao 8 Pcs, (8Pcs) Pork Dumpling with Sesame Sauce and Red Chili Oil (6Pcs), Numb & spicy pork Bao, Green Onion Pancake, (Sweet) Red Bean Paste Pockets. We had it family style. The 3 of us shared it all. There was plenty to go around. None of us left hungry. I can't even pick a favorite. Maybe the numb and spicy which wasn't that spicy. It was just so good and flavorful. The soup dumplings were amazing. So much perfect flavor. They held together until the bite. So good. The hot and sour soup was plenty tasty. Not the best I've ever had but certainly among the best. The only thing I will say is that one of my companions can't have seaweed. The wonton soup was amazing but full of seaweed. It wasn't listed on the menu and we have never had seaweed in any other wonton soup so didn't know to ask if it could be left out. That was sad. All she could do was have a tiny spoon of the broth to taste it. The green onion pancake was very good. The red bean paste pockets use the same dough but filled with sweet red bean paste. Unexpectedly wonderful Chinese spot. Based on the location in bougie pac heights, I was honestly a little skeptical. I was happily proven wrong by the absolutely delicious food at dumpling story. Everything we ate was wonderful but the vegetable bao was a real standout for me with its delightful texture and generous vegetables. Dumpling Story is the fraternal twin of Dumpling Home in Hayes Valley. I came on a weeknight 30 minutes before we intended to eat (due to trauma of waiting over 2 hours for Dumpling Home), and to my surprise, there was no wait at all! The food is more or less the same as the sister restaurant, but not identical. They do have a few other offerings I don't remember seeing at Dumpling Home like curry dumplings. I have honestly never ordered any boiled dumplings because we always come specifically for the juicy pork bao and xiao long bao. Both restaurants carry the same varieties of xiao long bao and vegetables sides. A recent favorite order has been the eggplant, which has an almost gooey texture and served with bamboo + sweet/sour sauce. We always get both steamed and fried XLB (a.k.a Juicy pork Bao). They are the same dumpling but one is fried vs steamed; both are perfect and unqiue in their own ways. As always, the XLB are exceptional and even better than Din Tai Fung in my opinion. The ambience of this restaurant is a little more high brow than its counterparts so I would recommend this location if you want a nice dinner date out. This is certainly an SF institution and well executed second location! read more

Came here on a Saturday night for dinner. It was crowded and we didn't have a reservation, but only waited about 15 minutes. This was my first time having dumplings properly and I went all in. We got the chicken xia long bao, shiitake and chicken dumplings, chicken dumplings, shrimp egg and chive dumplings, garlic and chive noodles, and green beans. The chicken xia long bao was amazing. Super flavorful. Not too sweet, not too spicy. Just right in the middle. The shrimp egg and chive dumplings and the regular chicken dumplings were both very tasty. Definitely solid picks. The shiitake and chicken dumplings were not the ones to get. The garlic and chive noodles were great. Oily and tasty exactly how I'd want them. The green beans were surprisingly good too. Came here with a friend on a weekday for dinner and we waited approximately 20 minutes until we were seated. Waiting on a weekday?! That's how you know a spot has to be good! These are hands down the best xiaolongbao that I have had, and I'm not a big fan of it admittedly. The meat quality and chewy QQ skin blew me away. Be sure to ask for soy sauce or vinegar, they don't give it to you at the table. The shengjianbao filling was also the juiciest I've ever had, but at the end of the day it truly comes down to preference. I prefer the fluffier skin, while she prefers the ones with a thinner and less doughy exterior. I really enjoyed my meal here, two items is more than enough for two people but I really wanted to try more from Dumpling Story. This will have to be a visit for another day... read more

The wait was very long and even if your party is "ahead" of other parties, I started noticing that they would accommodate larger parties first and then the smaller parties no matter what number you are in the waitlist which I did not like. Then when we got seated, they were not attentive and I get it, when it gets busy it can be hard but it would be nice to at least be somewhat attentive to even place an order. We stopped by Dumpling Story for an early dinner while shopping on Fillmore and I was excited to try this spot as it's the sister location of Dumpling Home, my favorite dumpling restaurant in SF. Luckily we came early so didn't have to wait. Between 2 people we shared the pan fried pork buns, crab and pork xiao long baos (4 pieces), chive, shrimp & egg pockets and stir fried okra which was more than enough food. I found that the xiao long baos were the best here, filled with a ton of soup and the crab added a great flavor. The pan fried pork buns however are better at Dumpling Home as the ones here were a bit doughy and didn't have much flavor in the meat and soup. The okra was surprisingly great with a ton of flavor and nice & light to eat along with the heavier dumplings. It's a big enough portion to share between 3-4 people as well. I came here because I was in SF and was craving dumplings. It was a genius move as I had some of the best dumplings I've ever had, and that says a lot. There was a short wait at 1:30pm. They use the Yelp waitlist but you have to sign in there, not allowing you to get "in line" from your Yelp app. I was sat at an outside table on their small patio, which had people waiting for their table just on the other side of the wall. The menu had the full gamut of Chinese fare, so I started with the special soy beef, which were thick slices of beef in a great sauce. I also had the dan dan noodles which were the perfect temperature upon arrival and tasted so fresh. Lastly, of course, they had a numb and spicy pork XLB that was out of this world. These might be THE best xlb I have ever had. After hearing so much hype about Dumpling Story, my friends and I were excited when we were able to nab a four top with only about a 10 minute wait. * Numb & Spicy Pan fried Bao - 10/10 - perfectly chewy skin with a crunchy fried bottom. The bao skin had the best lightly sweet flavor and was SO juicy for a pan fried bao. Big and plump, but perfectly bite sized. * Juicy Pork Pan fried Bao - 8/10 - same amazing exterior, the pork flavor was just a bit lacking after having its more flavorful sibling , the numb & spicy version. However the broth flavor was able to shine through more. Tip: their chili oil goes so well with the baos! Ask for it!! * Beef Xiao Long Bao - 10/10 THESE WERE SO GOOD!! I've had a lot of xlbs, but these were unmatched in quality and craftsmanship that was so apparent in every dumpling. The exterior was the best chewy texture, perfectly pleated on top, able to be rolled so thin it's nearly translucent, and each one PACKED with savory and umami soup. The pork meat inside was fatty, rich, and tender. My favorite part abt all their dumplings was the flavor of the broth, which had sweeter undertones that really complemented the savory meat filling. This aspect of the broth was best highlighted in their soup dumplings, and I would HIGHLY recommend. The size was also generous compared to other popular places like din tai fung. * Zha Jiang Noodle with minced beef - 9/10 - pulled chewy noodles paired with a bean paste and minced beef sauce and vegetables. Noodle texture was perfect and the sauce was deliciously savory and the perfect amount to coat each noodle. Service was prompt, and they did an amazing job answering any questions, offering honest recommendations, and keeping our waters full. I really enjoyed the flavors of both dishes but my only complaint is that the prices are a bit steep.. even for San Francisco! Delicious spring rolls (a bit oily), vegetarian dumplings (the skin was a bit on the ticker side for me but still great), noodles, and pan fried meat dumplings (which were enjoyed on the table). We had a nice corner table that was a bit more private than the other tables. The service is very good. There could be a wait as it does get busy. I would say as a vegetarian you can definitely get a great bite here and the prices are fair as well!
