I have seen several Bun Mees around the city and finally decided to try. It was right in FiDi which made it a easy spot for a workday lunch. I got the combo banh mi which included lemongrass pork, pate, and mortadella, carrots, and daikon. It doesn't taste like the traditional Vietnamese banh mi but it is a solid sandwich. The herbs or spices they had might have contributed to that. The place did feel more like fast food for banh mi which is not necessarily bad but might not be for you if you want an authentic banh mi. The sandwich had a nice crunch and wasn't dry at all. I'm usually on the fence for mortadella type of meat but I didn't mind this one. The sandwich made for a filling tasty lunch. read more

You'll do better in Little Saigon for authentic bahn mi at just a third of the price here. Better yet, accumulate the savings and head to Vietnam. Or Houston I guess. A $15 bahn mi is a lil much for this generic version but if you're downtown and out of options, it'll pass. LEAP DAY LUNCH AND FIFTH FRIDAY OF LENT As Leap Day only happens one every four years for lunch I wanted to go to an eatery I've never tried before. Why did I choose this place? This eatery is a partner of Caesars Rewards Dining. As a Caesars Rewards Member when I eat at these restaurants I earn Rewards Credits that I can use to get discounts or comps for hotels at Vegas. When I went to Bun Mee for lunch on Leap Day I ordered crispy fried chicken sandwich. With all the craze over crispy chicken sandwich I thought having a crispy chicken on a bahn mi would be intriguing. I didn't realize that the crispy chicken would be a brioche bun. Besides that item I also ordered Momma Tran's Crispy Egg Rolls. I ordered both items to go and brought it back to work. Regarding the crispy chicken sandwich the bun doesn't remind you for a bahn mi, but the pickled carrots and daikon do. The crispy chicken was moist. The brioche bun acts as a different contrast texture to the crispy chicken. However I would've like a baguette, which would've enhanced the crispiness of the chicken. The egg rolls at Bun Mee are like imperial rolls you see at Vietnamese eatery. I prefer imperial rolls at Vietnamese eateries over egg rolls at Chinese restaurants as the imperial rolls have an umami texture not filled with vegetables. Momma Tran's Crispy Egg Rolls have that texture due to the woodear mushroom. The combination of the ground pork and woodear mushroom make the eggs rolls at Bun Mee meaty. The second time I came here was on the fifth Friday of Lent. When I first came to Bun Mee I noticed the sign of the Hanoi-style catfish sandwich, which was for a limited time. That gave me a reason to come back on a Friday during Lent. Besides this item I ordered the salt and pepper garlic fries. I liked the fries due to the unique flavoring you tend to see on chicken wings and pork chops. I mostly came here for the catfish on that Friday of Lent. I preferred the catfish sandwich over the crispy chicken sandwich due to one thing - the bread. The catfish sandwich has a crispy bread roll that you associate with bahn mi. As I anticipated the baguette enhanced the crispy breading of the catfish. After my two visits to Bun Mee I enjoyed the sandwiches. One thing that makes Bun Mee stand out is the meat is freshly cooked whearas other places the meat is prepared. The vegan mayo that has spices in it add an extra layer of deliciousness, it's truly a joy to eat this. Not to my surprise, the banh mi was lifeless, the chicken lacked an umami flavor and smokeyness to it, the picked carrots lacked the sweet vinegar tartness that it should have, and they didn't slather on nearly enough sauce or mayo or whatever they put on the bun. The pick up process was fast and painless. I would like to come back to try their other proteins for comparison but judging by the flavor or lack thereof I wasn't initially impressed. 3.5 stars During the last days of working at my SF office, I began to rely heavily on takeout. Mostly because all my worldly possessions were being packed and stress. I feel like it's got a very strong "Viet Inspired"/ "Viet Fusion" vibe in their menu offerings. I'd also seen their SFO outpost so many times that I decided I'd rather try their food at a normal price than pay SFO prices and be disappointed. And usually, I'm pretty disappointed in myself for paying SFO prices for food and expecting more. I ordered two items - the Caramel Citrus Rice Bowl + the Smokey Eggplant Sandwich, although both at separate times. Firstly, the Caramel Citrus Rice Bowl. It was interesting in that I was unsure which Viet dish inspired it because I don't think I've ever tasted this combo of flavors before. I got it with chicken. The side of caramel sauce tasted like burnt molasses. I think they were trying to replicate the caramelized pork belly? But it was much too sweet and heavy on the burnt taste. It didn't go well with the grapefruit slices in the bowl. I mean, I've had the caramelized pork belly in Viet restaurants where they add some lime but regardless, the execution was severely lacking. The smokey eggplant sandwich was my favorite. I mean, braised eggplant on sandwiches is always a delicious combo. I know, I know - eggplant parmesan but that is literally just soggy tomato sauced eggplants. Sadly, I'm not the biggest sandwich lover so I feel like I'm not the best person to say what's a great sandwich and such. It's in a great location. I ordered five spice chicken banh mi via Ritual app and they gave me good pickup experience (no long wait and my food was ready when I got there), but I was a little bit disappointed by the taste.. First of all, visual-wise it looks really good! It was well balanced; good amount of chicken chunks, pickled carrots added color into it, making it looks really appetizing. Texture-wise, the bread was amazing! It's crunchy in the outside and soft in the inside. Chicken was moist too. Pickles was crunchy. Together, they are perfect harmony. Unfortunately for the taste-wise, it tastes a little too bland for me, hence the 3 stars. The five spice chicken was good, you can actually taste the five spices in it, but it wasn't tasty enough. The lemongrass pork did not have much flavor and lacked that nice fattiness and chew that you only get with a cheaper cut. Since the pickles were shredded, they blended into the sandwich instead of adding texture. Saddest of all, the pate was not noticeable next to the mayo. While I totally understand elevating a dish, I think Bun Mee goes too far to the point of losing the nostalgic goodness of the banh mi.
