The japchae (glass noodles) have the perfect texture and are seasoned well. The tteokbokki is delicious, great consistency to the rice cakes and the sauce is sweet and a little spicy. The sushi is decent considering the context. The sushi rice is cooked well and seasoned. They have salmon avocado rolls, California rolls, and fried rolls, as well as kimbap. Good food! Obviously not Michelin quality or anything but it's really good for the price. It's really cheap for a good quantity and big variety of good or great options. They deliver too. The staff helpfully explained how this place works: it's priced purely by weight which is very convenient. They didn't even ask me for a tip. At lunch time there aren't too many people at once so it's not crowded to get stuff from the buffet, and very few things were out. There's a good amount of seating. However, I must dock points for two things. Most of the food was cold or at least not hot anymore as it doesn't seem actively heated. It doesn't help that seating is outside. The center of the chicken felt a bit questionable, possibly not cooked enough. I didn't get sick but that's a bit yikes. I've walked by the restaurant when exploring Crocker Galleria (trying to see if any stores were still in business) and was pleasantly surprised to see a bustling lunch crowd on the top floor. Their popular option is to grab a to-go box and pay per pound (~$11). There is an array of salad bar options as well as Korean and Japanese food. The protein options include chicken, pork, fish, and tofu. I highly recommend the soy glazed fried chicken, japchae, and the deep fried sushi. I'm a big fan of kimbap, though these had avocado in them, which I don't typically see in many mass produced kimbaps. My total came to be a little under $20 and the meal was definitely worth it. We never would've found this spot if it weren't for their a-frame outside promoting their super reasonable lunch buffet. We were a little skeptical at first because it was pretty hidden on the top floor in a mostly empty retail center, but this ended up being a pretty solid spot. The buffet had a variety of options like sushi, teriyaki chicken, japchae, and gyoza among other Asian cuisine offerings. They also had selection of salads that ranged from caesar and kale to greek. The grand total for lunch for 5 of us was $70, probably as reasonable as you can find in the FiDi. If you eyes are bigger than your stomach, it can be easy to go overboard, especially when there's such a good array of foods. I remember eating at their Fremont St. location, in the alley, back in the early 2000's. The selection has diminished. There's no more tri-tip steak or salmon. Now it is tilapia. CG is eerily empty saved for this Julie's Kitchen and a few businesses that's inside, most stores are closed and gone. I think we can thank the pandemic. We were both full and satisfied. My husband tried this place before but this is my first time here. He told me that before covid, this place sells food by the pound. Now it's a set lunch type of place and you placed the order in the front, no going inside. You either take the food to go or sit and eat at the tables lined outside the restaurant. The food is generally very solid and nothing to complain about, and I love that I get to get something different each time and expect it to be pretty good. My go-to options at Julie's Kitchen include spring rolls, kimbap, cucumber kimchi, bean sprouts, kale salad (love that it's dressed well enough that I can hardly taste the bitterness of raw kale), tteokbokki, roasted broccoli and brussels sprouts, and shrimp avocado salad. Julie's is one of my "go-to" lunch places. Located in the cavernous and practically empty Crocker Galleria, Julie's guarantees you a quiet place to eat a high quality meal. In fact, had it not been for the billboard outside on Sutter Street, I might not have known that Julie's was still open. Despite the recent price increases (which seems to be the norm these days), I still feel that the food at Julie's Kitchen is a good value for the quality and quantity you receive. My personal favorite is the #11 Sushi Bento - the sushi is almost on par with what you would find at a good stand-alone sushi restaurant. The soba and tempura are well prepared, and the fish is fresh and delicious. I've also tried the Teriyaki Chicken and Salmon plates, which were both excellent. The portions are very generous, so you definitely won't leave feeling hungry. In fact, you'll likely have more to eat later that same afternoon or eventing. One of my favorite lunch spots near my work! It's a really good deal for $10.99/lb of food. It's perfect for me since I'm trying to eat more salad and lose some weight. I came here for 2 Fridays for lunch. I used the paper plate and filled my plate with salad, 2 pieces of sushi, teriyaki chicken, fish, avocados, poke, seaweed salad, spinach, etc. Both times was only $10 something! A tip is to use the paper plate instead of box, cause it will weight less and you can eat it at the table before going back to your office. There are plenty of seats. It's sad to see the empty stores at this mall, but so glad Julie's Kitchen is still hanging in there. Best meal I had in SF. I was so happy and lucky to have come across this place (s/o to Google reviews: you know a Korean food place is legit if people leave positive reviews in Korean). Everything was fresh and presented perfectly. Authentic Korean food like your Korean mom would serve. I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the food ("bento box style"), I can really tell that they put heart into the food they make here. For ~$16 I got the vegetarian bento box which came with a Korean soy-sauce braised tofu (doobu jorim), japchae (seasoned just right!), roasted broccoli + potatoes, 2 veggie fresh spring rolls, and a yoobu chobab (not sure what this translates to in English, "fried tofu skin stuffed with rice"). I was really touched by the thoughtfulness of the owner, who seemed to be the one attending the cash register and taking the orders at the storefront (the interior is closed off by the way and they don't have a buffet anymore). It didn't need to, but the bento box came with a cute little portion of Korean/Japanese vegetarian curry which was piping hot and delicious. That's what I call keeping the customer in mind. The tofu was pan-fried and came on top of a bed of short-grain brown rice (a good quality rice!). Since it's an outdoor mall, there are tables and chairs to eat your food. I wouldn't say their food is authentic, but it's fresh, healthy, and the portions are huge. You can tell it's made with love like your Korean Umma or Halmunee. The lady is super sweet and she's added a huge chicken nugget as a freebie for me with a big smile. This was a surprise! Walking past the Galleria's retail concourse, which was such a thriving place 25 years when I worked in the area, I was surprised to find it almost entirely abandoned. Julie's Kitchens' signboard on Post Street caught my eye because the photographs of the menu offerings looked so inviting. I did a quick Yelp search and saw that the place gets good reviews, so decided to buy some bento to take home to my wife and mother in law. I went upstairs and found the restaurant, which is only one of two now operating in the Galleria ghost town, tucked up into a third floor corner on the Bush Street side. During Covid it is operating only as a takeout counter, but, peering inside the restaurant, I could see warming tables for a buffet-style operation for happier times. The menu offers about a dozen bento combinations, nearly all of a Korean-Japanese bent, with only an otherwise inexplicable shrimp and grits plate departing from this norm. I chose the poke combination and got two teriyaki chicken bentos for my wife and mother in law. The food was packaged for me quickly and the staff is very friendly. Portions are quite generous: While I consumed the poke meal in a single setting, the chicken teriyaki boxes each made for two meals. The food is pretty exemplary. The poke had fresh ahi, perhaps a bit underdressed, but flavorful. The sides included two credible California roll pieces, a creamy avocado salad with a shrimp, some spicy salad with tofu, a simple cabbage salad, and rice. My wife and mother in law raved about the chicken, which came with a decent jabchae, the same avocado salad with a shrimp, the same cabbage salad, a jalapeno stuffed with sausage, tempura, and rice. My wife gave me her stuffed jalapeno and tempura; I found both to be credible. The restaurant also threw in a karaage piece, which we split between us and loved. I look forward to trying the fried chicken plate because it was thar good. So, the food rates a solid 4, at least. I am giving the place 5 stars, though, because, for the quality and quantity of food, this place is downright inexpensive. The plates were between $13 and $15, before tax and tip. Downtown, my walkabout disclosed, you are lucky to find a burrito, rice plate, burger, or sandwich for that kind of money. The pricing is particularly remarkable considering how little traffic there is in the Galleria in particular and the FiDi in general these days. I have to head back downtown next week. Although there are several other temptations in the neighborhood, I will be heading home with more bentos from Julie's Kitchen. read more
