We were immediately greeted upon walking in and were seated right away. The menu had a decent choices with dim sum dishes plus noodles and soup. I loved they have dim sum and other dishes for those who prefer non dim sum items. The gentleman that took our order was friendly and gave us a few recommendations. Stopped by this dumpling spot for a quick weekday lunch and was pleasantly surprised how yummy everything was. The highlight was of course the Sheng Jian Bao with a nice crisp bottom and lots of soup in the dumpling. I found the prices comparable to similar restaurants. Village Tea House had a very cozy feeling although I happened to be seated under a harsh spotlight, so that was a bit uncomfortable. As for service, everything was great. They did run out of Thai Iced Tea so that was a bummer. My kids did not enjoy the Rose Iced milk tea as it had a very "flowery" taste. I feel terrible leaving a bad review when a majority are good, but I was highly disappointed. For starters, I waited a bit longer than I wished before I was even spoken, let alone seated. Everybody around me either was offered tea or had tea, but me. There are only two servers, so they are lacking in that department as well. They aren't efficient or effective. As for the inside, it's clean, bright and somewhere I can see myself often. The food however looked amazing, but it absolutely needed help in all of the areas of taste. The green beans weren't garlicky and they were super sweet which was weird. The xlb were okay, but the broth didn't have enough flavor and the meat was dry. The dan dan noodles and the chicken wings weren't good at all. The dan dan noodles had a shrimpy kind of taste and was just not good. Wow. My mom and I were in the area at YBCA and needed lunch so figured we'd give village tea house a try. Expectations met and exceeded. Came on a Wednesday at lunchtime (noon?) and no wait. The servers were quick with taking our orders and food came out one at a time, but quickly! - Dan dan noodles: thick flavorful sauce. The noodles were thick and chewy, and I love that the sauce was balanced, not too oily, not too chili. I will say that I wouldn't call it authentic or what I think of necessarily when i think of dan dan noodles, but they were still great. - Green onion pancake: SOOOO thin and SOOO crispy. If you like your green onion pancakes a little more doughy and a lil more sustenance then these aren't for you. I was a fan tho of the crisp flakiness. - Xiao long bao: wrapper was thin, broth was flavorful, filling was good. My only thing for these was that they were a little small and one order only comes with 5. - Chili oil wonton: different than din tai fung chili wontons, but still phenomenal. Not overly oily, super good umami flavor, well rounded - Sheng jian bao: I have been looking for a good sheng jian bao for so so long and this one is pretty damn good. Dough is solid, the pan fried bottom is great texture, so much soup inside, filling isn't mushy and has texture and flavor. What is not to love. Extra shoutout: We ordered a sheng jian bao to go (since they were so good), but left before we got the to go order (slipped out minds). We had already left the city when we realized and I called 5 min before they closed to ask if we could come back! We ordered a variety of dishes and while we were full, we weren't happy with what we had eaten. However, they did have decent prices. We got the: - Fresh Watermelon Juice (4/5 - hard to go wrong with this) - Dan Dan Noodles (1/5 - the sauce flavor was just not there at all and was super watery & just didn't feel authentic Dan Dan noodles but not sure if they were trying to go for their "own version" - either way not for us) - Pork Siu Long Bao (1/5 - there's 3 things that go into a SLB for me and it's the soup, meat, and wrap; the only thing good here was the wrap and how thin they were able to make it but they definitely need to work on the placement because even if they expand, they shouldn't be all sticking to each other bc then, it'll rip when you try to pick it up) - Chili Oil Wonton (2/5 - the sauce tasted very similar to the Dan Dan noodles but was ok overall) Overall, I wouldn't come back.
