I've dined at U :Dessert Story several times, but I only recently visited in-person for the dine in experience. I will say that ordering takeout severely diminishes the quality of the dining experience. Here's why: First, the packaging. As most items on the menu are accompanied with a variety of sauces, ice creams, and toppings, ordering to-go means that all these extra sides are packaged in those plastic solo cups that Costco uses for samples. Not only does this mean less toppings, but it also means that you'll have to assemble and plate the dessert yourself at home. This ties in with my next point, presentation. Second, the presentation of the dine-in experience is immaculate. If we're paying on average $15 per dessert, the presentation should be enough to make you salivate on sight. And it does. In contrast, the takeout containers simply don't do the dessert justice. Third, the organization of the takeout system is poorly designed. I've ordered takeout about 3 or 4 times, and even though I understand the staff is busy with attending to in-person customers, there were a couple times where we waited about 30-45 minutes before a staff member approached us and asked for our order numbers. More on the dine-in experience: the restaurant itself is very aesthetic. Love the abundance of wood, eccentric couches, and the plants everywhere. There's plenty of seating inside, but I will say that the tables are arranged pretty close together. We ordered a Boba Thai Tea Bingsoo, which came out to be about $16. Although this was rather expensive for a dessert, I will say that the portion was rather generous. Maybe we were full from dinner, but we shared this and had some leftover! The texture of the bingsoo itself is so soft it melts in your mouth. And the thai tea flavor is strong, but not overbearing. The bingsoo comes with condensed milk, boba, and bread, and whipped cream on the top. I'm usually not a huge fan of the boba, but this one was spectacular. Chewy, soft, scrumptious, and delightful. Other than the bingsoo, I also love their brick toasts (I've tried the honey and thai tea ones). I've gotten their crepe cakes a couple times, but I will say that those are sometimes a hit or miss. Getting their bingsoo or brick toasts is definitely a safe bet! read more

A nice dessert place to visit in a hot day. This Berkeley location is much more spacious than the one in the city, and also the service is faster. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty full. You can't go wrong with the mango sticky rice bingsoo, the shaved ice is super fine and the sticky rice is soft and chewy. The last time I had this in Sf there was mango purée inside the bingsoo, but we didn't see it this time. We've tried a few bingsoo at U and this is one of our favorites. The matcha crepe cake has a decent matcha taste. I'm not a fan of the raspberry sauce but it helps balancing the creaminess of the crepes. This has become our go-to dessert spot at the end of the night since it is open late and their dessert options are all a hit. It is packed on the weekends so factor that time in and it does take some time for your dessert to be made but when it arrives it sure is worth the wait. My favorite is the mango shaved ice- I could eat two of these by myself if I allowed myself to. Actually all the shaved ice options are winners and the price is high but the quality also matches up. The hojicha banoffie was very sweet but a great combination (hojicha, caramel, and banana)! It would be a nice goal to try everything on the menu since all the desserts that come out is the kitchen are worth a head turn so don't be afraid to go for something new. This place is fun. Good service. Good dessert. Open Late. First, the presentation here is such that every order that comes out is met with "wow" and photos. This place knows how to present stuff in a fun way, and that makes dining here fun. The Bingsoo is easily shared with 2-4 people, so even if $17 is a large price for you if you are going with folks who you want to share with, this can be both affordable and fun. Bingsoo is a mound of shaved ice with some chunks mixed in and on top, and then more toppings on the side to play with. We got 2 versions of bingsoo: the thai tea and the Hojicha. Hojicha Bingsoo: I found the hojicha flavor slightly fishy, but my dining companion didn't and enjoyed the dish. It was served with the brown sugar boba (yum) and molasses (nice pairing), with brownie chunks inside The Bingsoo BOBA THAI TEA IS ON POINT. This is the best thai tea flavor, married with brown sugar boba done perfectly, and the chunks were grass jelly. I'm not so much a fan of the sweet cheese topping all the Bingsoo have, but it didn't spoil the overall effect. It was served with toast cubes as well and sweetened condensed milk. The thai tea aficionado we dined with was very impressed with the flavor. Next time, we all agreed we'd order the customizable bingsoo, either thai tea with something other than the toast side, or another flavor of ice--keeping the brownie bits inside and the brown sugar boba but mixing everything else up. We also tried the dango combo. This was great. Dango are nice and chewy and take on sweet and savory toppings well. There was one with bonito (savory) on top of sweet, and two others that leaned more fruity and sweet. We all agreed the dango was worth a repeat. This place is very DAIRY HEAVY. Our waiter asked if we had any allergies or sensitivities, which was very nice. There are several vegan options on the menu (dango being one) that he pointed out. He encouraged me to ask more questions too. When I ordered the dango, he also asked if I was ok with bonito (which is fish). Came in during dinner time and we were directed to seats right away. This spot specializes in desserts and boba drinks, and are well known for their dessert brick toast. I wanted to see what the hype was about so I ordered their honey toast and my friend ordered their strawberry croffle. When I tell you the size of the toast is huge... IT IS HUGE. I instantly regretted ordering a whole one to myself, however it was actually amazing. The bread was really soft, and the ice cream and fruit was a great addition, however I only finished about 3/4 of it before I became sweetened out. This is a long overdue updated review for U :Dessert Story - from 4 stars to 1 star. They are a little off to the side away from the main downtown area and parking is street parking here, so it may be a bit difficult. I came here on a weeknight when it was not too busy. I opted for a pickup order to go - you have to order online. When you arrive to pick up your order, the waitresses will ignore you, so you have to go inside and wave down someone to help you. You are paying for overpriced desserts that are too dry/flavorless/sweet, food that is fishy/oversauced, and for bad service. I tried a couple of different items that I had not tried from here before - I tried their cheese corn dog, which is a fish sausage and mozzarella cheese corn dog and matcha mochi waffle, which came with caramelized bananas, homemade matcha sauce, homemade red bean paste, and mixed berries (and I added boba and 1 scoop of matcha ice cream). Adding a scoop of ice cream is an extra $3, which is ridiculous. The corn dog too fishy and way too saucy. There's seating inside and outside, but we were seated inside due to our group size (7). We ordered 4 items: mango sticky rice bingsoo, Thai tea bingsoo, Thai tea crepe cake and the new uji matcha stuffed honey toast. The bingsoo ($15 each) is my go-to when I dine at U: Dessert Story. They're sweet, refreshing and have different textures with the toppings they add! Yumm! The crepe cake($13) is not bad. They use a lot of whipped cream so if you're not a fan of dessert dosed in whipped cream then thus is not for you! My cousin loved this dessert because of the whipped cream! The uji matcha toast ($16) was disappointing and a big hard to cut up with a plastic knife that it came with. I much prefer their honey toasts where they're ore-cut into cubes. The matcha ice cream melted really fast so that was a bit sad. Nothing really stood out about this item. I probably wouldn't order this again as it was not worth $16 in my opinion. Sorry! Parking: usually really difficult to find street parking, but because I came on Memorial Day, most people were probably home with family. Cozy vibes here!! My friends and I (group of 6) got here around 8pm and waited 5 minutes for a table outside. We left at 9:30pm and the place was still packed with a line. I can see why though, their Halloween decorations were super cute and their menu is e x t e n s i v e. We loved the hojicha bingsoo with the hidden brownie bits at the bottom, but we weren't big fans of the homemade foam cheese on top (tasted kind of too salty?). The scoops of watermelon for the soju bomb were a nice touch, but I personally prefer the soju/watermelon slush you might see elsewhere. I'd been wanting to try this place for a while, so I decided to order a hojicha banoffie and banana milk tea via delivery. The banoffie reminded me of a cream pie, a good choice if you like that but aren't a fan of more traditional cake. The powder's flavor reminded me of matcha - I assume that was the hojicha powder. I'm impressed by how intact it was given it was delivered by an Uber Eats worker on a bike. The layers of cream and chocolate and the nuts were delicious and well-balanced in their ratios. As for the banana milk tea, it was decent, and tasted more like artificial banana flavor rather than fresh bananas. The tea flavor isn't that heavy, if you prefer something that isn't that bitter. Probably would've enjoyed my experience more if I had done delivery. In person was a struggle. There was no clear direction on what to do once you got there. Lots of people were standing outside, and lots were squished inside. Once I figured it out, it seemed like they only took orders via online menu/QR code. So a lot of people were doing that and crowding around the doors and the outside seating area. Technically, you could eat inside but the place is small. Depending on your comfortability level during COVID, that's something to seriously consider. Ordered a slice of matcha cake with drizzle and a brown sugar boba tea. Pretty good albeit expensive. The flavors really come together and that beautiful pink is stunning! The all time favorite was the choco banana crepe roll! So yummy and satisfying with the banana sauce and side of ice cream. The ONE complaint is that they play two completely different stereos at the SAME TIME. One stereo comes from kitchen at about the same volume as the music in the dining area. Excellent taste, slow service, touch expensive, worth trying! I came around 6p on Sunday and there was a considerable crowd outside, so my friend and I decided to order to-go using the QR-linked menu. We went with the Chocolate Original Matcha Lava Cake - which was a bit pricey at nearly $15. After waiting outside for 30 minutes, I went inside to check-in on our order and it turns out it was ready but our name hadn't been called. The ice cream had melted and matcha spilled through outside the cake (pictured below). So it didn't exactly look the prettiest and we couldn't use our forks to eat the ice cream, but the lava cake tasted great. I came here back in 2021, on a date. I had been so excited to visit once again and try out the new creations. I will say I have never been more dissatisfied by a dessert place. Let me first say that back in 2021 everything tasted absolutely fresh and delicious. I even took a thai Crepe cake to go today. Went home to enjoy, and noticed the bottom layers of my thai cake were soured. I also noticed it very SLIGHTLY in the Coconut crepe cake, but I am certain that the whipping cream had gone bad. needless to say, I had hoped that my once fond memories of this place would live on, and I am so heartbroken read more
