Excellent taste, slow service, touch expensive, worth trying! I came around 6p on Sunday and there was a considerable crowd outside, so my friend and I decided to order to-go using the QR-linked menu. We went with the Chocolate Original Matcha Lava Cake - which was a bit pricey at nearly $15. After waiting outside for 30 minutes, I went inside to check-in on our order and it turns out it was ready but our name hadn't been called. The ice cream had melted and matcha spilled through outside the cake (pictured below). After a few failed attempts to visit the SF location, I'm glad I could make it to the Berkeley one haha. This place takes dessert to the next level, but definitely come ready to spend some coin. We were surprisingly able to get seated right away when we came on a Saturday night. We ordered the Young Coconut Pandan Cake and the Hojicha Bingsu. The cake was good but more mild in sweetness. I wasn't really able to taste the pandan, but the coconut definitely came through. The Bingsu was the better dessert for me - it was so soft but had a strong Hojicha flavor and the ample amount of sweetness. We originally thought we were going to order takeout, but the interior was so spacious and spaced apart that we decided to proceed with indoor dining (first time since reopening during covid times!). The service is really great with specialized QR codes on each table that allow you to place your order under your specific table number. This place has been on my must-try list for a while now, and I found it so convenient that after touring UC Berkeley, it was right next to campus! The place was pretty crowded and workers were definitely hustling. The place looked really busy and the restaurant is seemed pretty small. They were playing K-Pop music. I ordered their matcha molten lava cake, I believe that was the name (or something similar), and it was honestly really good. The flavors melt in your mouth almost immediately! However, it was pretty expensive, in my opinion, for what I got :(. My family came to Berkeley on a lovely day in May. We were not too hungry yet but want to grab a snack and was attracted by the menu choices of this place. We came around 2:30pm so there is no crowd; we sat down at an inside table by the window and felt nice as the outside breeze flows in. This was my mom's choice of dessert to complete her birthday celebration. It's conveniently on the corner where you can't miss it and is a good distance near Shattuck Square, but not in the hustle and bustle of it. Their outdoor menu is eye catching and makes it convenient to see what they have to offer. One notable thing is that they require proof of COVID vaccination to enter the establishment, but there are a few tables on the patio where you can order via QR code and they bring out your order. The mango sticky rice description in the menu was deceiving. They only gave you a small side of sticky rice, condensed milk, and mango puree. The mangoes in the actual dessert were disappointing because they were previously frozen, instead of fresh. This dish also consisted of a heaping amount of fine shaved ice. It was a mediocre dish, more disappointing than anything. The lava matcha cake was a nice portion, not too overwhelming, but the richness brought it over the top. Lastly, the strawberry matcha boba milk tea was also mediocre. I was overall disappointed with this visit. The server bringing out our dessert wasn't enthused at all and didn't even say a word to us even when bringing out our dishes, just set them down and walked away. I was expecting more from this place given the reviews and the fact that they deliver, which is how I discovered them in the first place. U Dessert will always be one of my favorite places in the Bay Area to get some Bingsoo. Bingsoo or Korean Shaved Ice is actually one of my top 3 favorite desserts and this place definitely hits the spots all the time. Everyone loves mango, and the sweet melty texture of the fruit really comes through in the Bingsoo. On top of that, you can drizzle extra mango sauce, condensed milk on it as well! They also serve you pandan rice to go with it. I love it and I'd give this five stars anytime. What I love is that the ice gets milky in the end from the condensed milk and it just elevates the texture of the shaved ice. The last time I came, my friends and I tried the spicy out summer bingsoo, which is this light snow ice with lychee, spicy honey, and crunchy strawberry bits on it. This one was definitely a surprise! My overall review of this is that is tastes exactly like a mexican candy. It's sweet when you taste it, but when you'd least expect it, a spicy kick hits you right at the end. I was definitely in for a surprise and I was very surprised... in a good way! They also give you lemon and extra sauces to drizzle over your ice for more flavor. I ended up getting the Lychee Matcha Fauxito and I thought that was alright. This time we ordered the Spicy Out Summer Bingsu without knowing what to expect from the flavor combination, but ended up pleasantly surprised! If you like spicy food, this is definitely the dessert for you. The hot honey blends incredibly well with the coolness of the shaved ice and the sweetness from the lychee. Each bite of the hot honey will make you want a bite of the cool bingsu which will make you want another bite of more hot honey. This place is really good! But they NEED TO FIX THEIR WAIT LIST SYSTEM. Came on a Friday night around 8pm and the line was out the door. However there is really no sign in sheet or Yelp waitlist. It's basically whoever is at the front of the line is seated next. But how will they know who to seat if they don't know how large each party is. You basically had to tussle to get to the front and hope you get seated. They should employ some system write your name down or something. It can get really busy because the desserts are good. I definitely saw people barging in to get to the front and get seated before other people standing in line outside. Aside from the wait list situation, the desserts are solid. The crepe cakes were good but a little bland. The toast was delicious. We also ordered the wedges and they were so good. Very good side of ranch too. Water is infused with fruit so if it's not your thing, suggest bringing your own water. Also didn't like that they gave little drink napkins. I asked for more napkins from the waiter and he gave us 3 more when there were 4 of us. This place sells things other than desserts so if I'm eating greasy food, I def would like a bigger napkin meant for food. The seats are kind of weird too, looks like cheap furniture. If you have a bad back or you're a tall or larger person, the seats may be uncomfortable. They have one table that has a swing double seat and many backless circle stools. I saw a lot of people playing musical chairs as they tried to get comfortable at their tables. Misc notes: They have 1 unisex bathroom. I was craving something sweet, and fruity. So this was perfect. I ordered the mango bingsu which is my go to. It is light and fluffy and layers of sweet mango flavors. There is fresh mango, and some sort of puree. It also comes with a sweet white sauce and warmed sticky rice. I had been wanting to try their cheesecake, and saw the option to add cheesecake for $3. Obviously I had to do that. The cheesecake went deliciously with the bingsu, but it was just typical cheesecake bites. It was full house on a Sunday night, which gave some indication of how popular this place is. We perused the menu using the QR code, and decided on the mango bingsu with pendan sticky rice, the Thai ice tea crepe cake, the matcha warabi mochi, and a matcha latte. The place billed itself as having the most aesthetic desserts in the Bay. They are not kidding! The matcha mochi came on a beautiful black ceramic plate and the mochi was sprinkled with matcha powder and topped with a twig of rosemary. It is an unique dessert, as it is a jelly-like confection made from bracken starch and covered with orrganic Uji Matcha and kinako served with Kuromitsu Syrup. The other desserts were also served on beautiful ceramics. Our daughter loved her mango binsu shave ice, which came with a lot of mangos, and sauces on the side (mango puree and condensed milk). Our son's thai tea crepe cake has 18 layers topped with home made Thai tea sauce. As it was his birthday, the staff obliged my request to put a sparkler on it.
