My daughter and I were in town and we met my son and his girlfriend for dinner after they got off work. He suggested this place in the West Village, but we couldn't get a table there at the time we wanted to go. Fortunately, I was able to find that they had another location in Midtown and we were able to get a table. I have never had Georgian food before and was excited to try it. From the second, we walked in our experience was excellent. The restaurant was very charming with a very chic feel. Our server was so gracious and helpful in explaining the menu. We tried several traditional dishes, and they were all out outstanding. The food was so flavorful. We had the eggplant rolls and the Adjaruli Khachapuri as an appetizer. Both were amazing! They left me wanting more. For the main course I had the Chanakhi (lamb stew). This dish was so delicious. The lamb was tender and the sauce was savoy, perfectly seasoned and had so much flavor. My daughter had the Shkmeruli (chicken with garlic sauce). This creamy garlic sauce was amazing. I need to figure out how to make it. My son had the Kupati (house made sausages). I can honestly saw these were some of the best sausages I've ever had. The flavor was so unique and delicious. My son's girlfriend, who is a vegan, had the cauliflower with walnut sauce. The cauliflower was roasted perfectly and the walnut sauce is like nothing I've ever had before. It was so creamy that it made me question whether or not it had dairy in it. Another hit. To finish it off, we had the Khinkali which are these huge soup dumplings with beef and pork filling. Our server told this traditionally they eat them at the end of a meal so we follow tradition. Fortunately, our server explained to us how to eat them by holding them upside down and taking a small bite and drinking the soup out. These were massive and more than I should've eaten after appetizers and a main course. Nevertheless, we enjoyed them thoroughly. I really enjoyed this restaurant and the experience. We walked in trying to avoid the rain after spending some time at MoMA on a Friday night. The restaurant is cozy and definitely set up more for date nights or a big group dinner. Unfortunately, we were a group of three, so we were seated a little awkwardly by the live music corner away from the rest of the dining room, though it didn't cause too many interruptions in our conversation. We were all intrigued by the Georgian lemonade option on the drink menu. They were more like flavored sodas. I had the cream, which tasted exactly like vanilla cream soda. I tried my friends' pear and tarragon, and would get the tarragon next time as it was nice and herbal to complement the cheesy heavy dishes to follow. We started with the beet salad with goat cheese, which came with a raspberry sauce. I sometimes find it off putting if the beet is too earthy and bitter, but the beets were done well, flavorful without being too strong. The salad was really refreshing and much needed to pair with our khachapuri, which we ordered with spinach and special smoked cheese. The presentation was fun, a little funny because the wait staff kept accidentally spinning the whole plate in their effort to mix everything in. I love cheese and bread, so this was a true highlight. For main, we had the megrhuli karcho, which was stewed beef in a walnut sauce served with Georgian grits cake. The beef was tender but honestly all of the starters stole the show and the walnut sauce wasn't that flavorful. I did like the gritty texture of the walnut sauce against slightly packed gritty texture of the grits cake, but my friend found it mushy and boring. We went to Ubani for a team lunch today, and it was such a great experience. The ambience was warm and inviting, and it was a perfect spot for a group meal. We got to try a lot of Georgian food, and honestly, everything was good. The khachapuri/cheese boat was especially delicious, and the mixed grill gave us a nice variety of Georgian dishes to share. It was a great way to try a little bit of everything. The service was also excellent. Our waitress took the time to explain the menu to our table of six and gave us really helpful recommendations for both food and drinks. I'd definitely go back. I've been here several times, but this was by far my most disappointing visit. The food has always fallen a bit short of the authentic flavors I've enjoyed at other Georgian restaurants--especially Tbilisi--but what bothered me most this time was the lack of attention from the service staff. We were the only customers in the restaurant, yet the server seemed completely disengaged. I waited and waited for a simple water refill, and no one came by until I finally had to get their attention myself. That's simply unacceptable. Had a great visit! I've had Georgian food only once before, but really enjoyed it! First the food: ordered the standard, cheeseboat, khinkali (dumplings), and cauliflower in walnut sauce. All were very yummy! I don't know if it was better than other time, but standalone it tasted great. The cheeseboat is indulgent but worth every bite. I loved the cauliflower too. The dumplings were a bit doughy but good. Now I also had some wine that was recommended, and the fantastic server also gave us samples to decide! I spent a year living in Georgia the country and can attest that Ubani is a great spot to try authentic Georgian food in a convenient, midtown location. Their menu has many traditional Georgian staples, and friendly employees. I've been twice. The first time I got 4 beef and pork khinkali to-go and appreciated that they were large, juicy, and flavorful! The only thing I forgot to ask for was pepper. The second time I dined in and shared lobiani, Georgian salad, mushroom khinkali, and shrimp with a friend and we enjoyed everything. My husband and I were visiting our daughter in Manhattan and she made reservations at Ubani on 2nd Ave in Midtown East. None of us had ever had Georgian food before. By the time dinner was over, I was researching all things Georgian. The restaurant inside is very beautiful. Aside from the excellent food, the service from Elina was so friendly and lovely. All of her recommendations, from wine to dessert, were spot on and were given with descriptions and explanations based upon her love of her culture and country. We ordered the adjaruli khachapuri which was excellent, the Georgian Salad with walnuts, which was incredibly fresh, the beef and pork khinkali, which were phenomenal dumplings and the beef chakondril which was outstanding and beautifully flavored. We wanted to try something new and had never had Georgian food before. Since we live in the area, we decided to walk in. We didn't have a reservation, and it was just the two of us. The hostess was accommodating, but the table available for us was between two other tables for two and felt very cramped. Since that was the only table available, we decided to sit at the bar instead. It turned out to be a great choice. Nicho was the bartender. He was extremely helpful. He guided us through some Georgian wine and beer selections and even introduced us to their pre-dinner shot of chacha. Second time here, and we had a better handle on what to order. Came with friends who had never been here but wanted to try it. The place was pretty busy and it was only 6:30 on a rainy Saturday night . There are 2-tops and 4-tops, and they are pushed together for larger parties, I think. There was one very large group at a long table near the front. It's nice that there's a clear glass separating the dining room from the entrance so diners sitting up front don't get blown away when the door opens. We were seated and given the usual choice of water (tap is always our choice). We each were given 2 menus, one for drinks both alcoholic and not. Our friends ordered some kind of mocktail that came in a pitcher; our server brought us all a glass. I just had a bit of it to taste; kind of fruity and sparkling, pretty tasty. We explained to our friends what we'd had before and we saw some adjuli khachapuri on the next table; fun to watch the server mix the egg into the melted cheese. My husband and I shared a libation (Georgian bean pie) as our appetizer. Our friends ordered the Georgian salad which they loved, and he wanted the chicken soup. I think he was expecting something more like diner or standard chicken soup, but this one looked great to me! It was a little thicker than a broth and whiteish in color, with some greens and nice chunks of chicken. He couldn't finish it, so the server packed it for home. I bet it had flavoring/herbs or spices, that he isn't accustomed to. For main dishes, both men ordered the trout; my husband, not known to be effusive about food (that's my department, lol) absolutely loved loved it! It was apparently stuffed with citrus slices and it was covered with a sauce that he loved, I'm not sure what it was. He said he even ate the skin, unbelievable! Both women had the cauliflower. Beautifully plated, it's half a head of nicely roasted cauliflower on a bed of what I later learned was a walnut-based spread, about the consistency of hummus but not that smooth. There were pomegranate seeds and blackberries around it as a beautiful and tasty garnish. I demolished mine; my friend took hers home. Then we caved to a dessert; one Pavlova please, 4 spoons! It's a large meringue, with pretty piped cream on top and a few raspberries, and when we cracked it open (a knife came with it) there was raspberry sauce inside. Okay, my first ever Pavlova and I'm a fan! The single complaint we had was that there was some live music which I believe was for that large party up front who were obviously celebrating something. That music was so loud for about 10 or more minutes that my husband's Apple Watch buzzed with "loud noise" warning and we couldn't hear each other talk across the table. My head was ringing, very uncomfortable. But the food is very good and I believe you get your money's worth. I'm so glad that we discovered Ubani. My husband and I wanted a meal that we couldn't have at home. Enter Georgian food! We made a reservation, but I don't think we needed to for lunch. It's a small space, but they have a lot of tables. They have a lunch special where you can get three items each for $30, and the portions are so big that we could barely finish the third one. It's really a great deal. Everything was fantastic, fresh, and different. Even if it's something we've had before, like borsht, they make it with their own special flare. I loved the cheesy bread and the meat dumplings. We left so satisfied and I would love to go back one day! Don't forget about trying their Georgian lemonade! Everything was very good. Kachapuri of course - buttery and egg-y when mixed. Shkmeruli - garlic chicken. Rich and creamy but a little salty and very garlic-y. Beef/pork khinkali - normally I would forego it because it is essentially a giant version of Chinese xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) but I wanted to taste the difference. It was giant indeed. Beef stew - tomatoes and herbs are a nice touch to the tender beef. Highlight: appetizer plate had cheese, eggplant roll, and assortment of spread, all different flavors - spinach, leek, pumpkin(?), and beet. cottage cheese with mint was interesting. We went on a Thursday evenings 6 pm ambiance very quiet and we got the best seat in the house. As the night went on it got crowded. My group had a great experience here. It's nice to see another location of the original in Bay Ridge. To share, we ordered the appetizer platter and adjaruli khachapuri. The appetizer platter came with a variety of creamy dips and some cheeses. The dips each had a pleasant, unique flavor - my favorite was the leek dip. The ghebzalia (herb stuffed cheese) is probably the best item overall. I just with the platter came with some more bread. The khachapuri was also nice. The runny egg made a sauce once mixed with the butter and cheese. The bread was crispy and fluffy. For my entree, I had the lobio in clay pot. The stew was rich and creamy with pleasant spices, with some bread and pickles on the side to add variety. Others at my table tried the lamb chops, chanakhi (lamb stew), and chikhirtma (chicken soup), and they all enjoyed those. I visited over the weekend with a party of 6. The restaurant has plenty of space with some large tables to accommodate large parties, which was very helpful. I am not an expert at Georgian food. Only had it a few times and though a fan, am not qualified to make comparisons against a standard. I thought Ubani's food was very fine. Between my sister and me we tried many dishes. I went for pickles, mushroom soup, and house made sausages. I ate every bit of my meal with great happiness. Even picked up the bowl and slurped the soup from the bottom of the bowl (server gave me permission, really!) My sister had an appetizer platter, a grilled chicken dish and i forget what else. We split a kachapuri, a bread boat with cheese, butter, egg, and spinach, and a carafe of wine. She took home food for a week, We split a homemade strawberry lemonade instead of dessert. I could drink that lemonade every day. But better than the food, which as I said was fine, was the friendliness, helpfulness and easy willingness to accommodate the guest on the part of those who worked there. After visiting their Bay Ridge spot last year, stopped in for lunch recently at their Midtown location. It is a great deal-$35 for a 1st course, toasted khachapuri, and a 3rd course. We've eaten here 4-5 times and like the food and service. While paying this time, though, we realized that the prices on our receipt were higher than what's listed on the menu for almost every item. Adjaruli khachapuri was $1 more, bottle of wine charged at $88 rather than the $80 listed on the menu, and on and on. No wonder it got so expensive. Have been eating at various Georgian restaurants and have found them all to be good and to have their own take on certain dishes. Ubani's Adjaruli Khachapuri gets a 10+. The other dishes we had were both very good...the Garlic Shrimp....a bowl full of small shrimp in a tasty sauce....and the Lamb Kebab...which was wrapped in lavash with a side of sliced seasoned potatoes and a tomato dipping sauce. The glasses of Marnaveli Chinuri and Marnaveli Raktsiteli were good and their flavors' matched their description; each poured from their own carafes. Will be back...def for the melted cheese boat...that and a glass or two of wine can make for a Georgian meal in and of itself. read more

The food is hearty, comforting and yummy. The staff is Georgian and very knowledgeable about the dishes served, as well as the "techniques" for consuming them. All of the dishes I've tried are amazing. My favorites so far are the cheeseboat and the lamb chops. Regardless of what you eat, I highly recommend the pavlova as a dessert. It is light, airy, the perfect sweetness and perfect for sharing. The restaurant offers a fabulous 3-course lunch menu for $35. The regular menu items are reasonably priced too. I sincerely hope they keep the low prices, which make the restaurant affordable for multiple visits every month. Ubani is definitely a neighborhood gem in Midtown East.
