The good: I got Tom kha soup, prik khing with pork, green curry, papaya salad and ginger mushroom with chicken. I liked that you could adjust the spice level on everything. You can also choose your protein for most dishes. The only dessert option is mango with sticky rice. I asked for my large soup to be split in two with one spicy and one non-spicy and they were able to do that! I liked the coconut flavor of the green curry. The rice was fragrant and had a shiny sticky texture to it without being mushy. The papaya salad was spicy and fresh. The bad: The green beans in the prik khing dish was a bit undercooked. Beef is an extra dollar for most dishes. The soup had of lot of hard lemongrass chunks in it that I had to fish out of mg mouth as I was eating it. Exceptional and fast service with great food! We ordered the pad see ew, the ubon noodle bowl, and the mango sticky rice for dessert. Our orders arrived within 10-15 minutes! My pad see ew was great--a perfect balance of spicy and sweet. Although I see myself as having a high spice tolerance, the "medium" level was indeed a bit too spicy for me, so I would probably get mild next time. The ubon noodle was great with lots of flavor and was jam packed with meat and noodles. For our mango sticky rice dessert, we didn't enjoy it that much because the sauce poured over the rice and mango was too much and it was salty. The mangoes were very ripe and sweet though, and the rice was a nice texture. But the coconut cream sauce poured over was a bit too much for our taste. This is my second review about this place. We have been visiting this place over the years. The taste and quality has always been top-notch. When I went recently, I noticed that they have added new items to the menu, especially the Khao Soi. I have seen this in a few thai restaurants and hoping that Ubon thai would bring it. Yes, now they have it. Small, cute seating inside and always busy. The service is excellent and will make you feel at home. Any item you order, you won't regret it. I heard about Ubon through a coworker, who loves this place, so it intrigued me to call in and order some takeout for lunch. I was informed it'd only take 10 minutes to prepare, which shocked me: it would take me longer to get there than for the food to be ready! That said, I was out the door before you could say "Pad See Ew." I ordered the lunch special (chose green curry with tofu) and a Thai iced tea. I was surprised at how great the deal for the lunch special was: just under $11. In total, I only paid $15 for everything, which I found to be a solid deal. Portions might look small at first, but in fact are just right to leave you satisfied. The egg roll was nice and crispy, although the batter was too thick for my liking (would've liked more filling inside). The Thai iced tea was sweet and fragrant, which hit the spot. The green curry was decent, although I will say it was just a tad bland and barely spicy: I ended up adding in the hot sauce that came with it to raise the heat. Sadly, the jasmine rice was undercooked, which wasn't very pleasant, but the green curry helped to soften it. Overall, affordable Thai food and friendly service (even for takeout). Food is just average for Thai cuisine, but I'd consider returning to try out their other dishes. What I found interesting was that Ubon is literally sandwiched between two Japanese restaurants, so it's truly the token Thai place in the plaza! read more

This is definitely still one of my favorite places to eat Thai food. The food is very solid and they know how to cook Thai the right way. Their pad see ew noodles always have a good char to them. That's how it's supposed to be. Their green curry were one of the best I've had too and I usually don't get green curries. The service I feel is what still preventing me from giving them 5 stars. They should bring back the chili trays as you can't have Thai food without putting chilies on them as much as you need. Ubon Thai Kitchen is at Torrance Crossroads near Home Goods; it is tucked in between IHOP International House of Pancakes and Ko Ryu Ramen which is next to Jersey Mike's. It does not have public restrooms and a lot of people seem to love ordering Take Out to go, for pick up. The ambiance? Well, the colors are really warm. Their online info says reservations are required but I called a day ahead after seeing their hours and requirements and they said it was fine to just drop in with my party of four. My mom insisted she wanted basil for her crab fried rice which they didn't have when it came but I was strangely fine with this as it really wasn't part of their family recipe and it still tasted great. My uncle ordered a larger portion entree instead of a smaller portion with rice but they gave him a smaller portion with rice. We were mostly or actually the only ones dining in, but there were as I said people coming in to order To Go and Take Out orders on a shelf waiting for pick up. I had a non-alcoholic Thai Sunset with soda and lime and I really liked it. I really loved my boat noodles! They were soo spicy!! But perfectly proportioned: a lot of rice noodles, which was my choice because I asked our server what Thai boat noodles I should pick, and it had big beef balls, the tenderest beef, the spicy braised broth was so warming and fulfilling, the sprouts green onions cilantro were crisp and fresh, there is a Thai vegetable that is leafy that had a unique taste. I don't know what it's called but it's the first time I have tried that leafy vegetable and it tastes really good! I couldn't finish my broth or my noodles! And it also came with pork cracklings! Comparable to Filipino chicharon, I dunked those in the soup and had a good time. We each had a good choice and shared pork jerky as an appetizer, and it's basically like Thai tocino, to compare it to Filipino food: sweet, succulent, a little charred from caramelization. I tried some of the pork jerky with a tiniest spoonful of the Thai fish sauce although I left those chilis alone- it tasted great! Thai fish sauce seems a bit more refined than Filipino fish sauce. Filipino fish sauce is a bit more rough and tumble, wild. I would never put Filipino fish sauce with Filipino tocino but Thai pork jerky and Thai fish sauce blends really well! Eating the rice noodles with the pork jerky, where all the herbs and spices just soaked through and knitted together a dripping way instead of a dried rice kernels fried way made the experience so thoroughly opulent to my senses including my mouth and tongue with the fragrance. Though it wasn't the smoothest time, I could tell the staff does their best and the food did stand out as authentic and very delicious. My Thai boat noodles removed the pre-flu tickle in my throat (which could have been caused by my recent COVID vax and this season's flu shot) and thoroughly cleared my sinuses. I'm glad I can handle Thai medium spicy! Also the food was ready to eat, to me, almost as soon as we ordered it. Like, in the blink of an eye, as though it was magically appearing from a genie. Ubon is a region of Thailand, so I figure the family of the restaurant hails from there. Another good early dinner for this year's round of birthday celebrations. I would wholeheartedly recommend you try Ubon Thai Kitchen for their delicious food. Food so good they get a five! read more

Had a fly in it. Oh how disappointing and disgusting. We have been coming here for years . In recent times I gotta say I am disappointed by some of their dishes . The crying tiger used to be delicious , grilled and smothered with fish vinegar sauce . Now ? It was a bunch of boiled tasteless beef with a container of fish sauce. I get the Ubon noodle soup whenever I get our takeout. The taste of the broth has been inconsistent . I am happy with the amount of rice noodle they give you but they offer so little soup it is pretty much pointless . Honestly I would be fine if they charge me extra for the broth so I can cover the noodle! This isn't the first time we have had subpar food from Ubon . Okay. Four stars. That's a great rating! The reason it's not five: I ordered Tom Yum Soup with tofu and veggies (the regular, not large size). I thought they had completely forgotten the tofu, which I was super bummed about. It turns out they did not- there were TWO small pieces hiding at the bottom...also, the soup was yummy but not the best Tom yum I've ever had. HOWEVER, this place def has pros. Good labeling for veggie/vegan options and very reasonable pricing. We luv dat reasonable pricing. To go packaging not sustainable but I guess I haven't seen many Thai places where it is...my friend got the yellow curry and said she really liked it. She loves Thai food so I trust her opinion. Two words: sleeper hit! I stumbled upon Ubon purely by chance because this place offered Thai iced tea (per wifey's request) and my original choice did not. From our first meal, we were seriously impressed by both the pad see ew and pad kee mao's vibrant and balanced flavor profiles with just the right amount of heat in the latter. Not only that, the meat quality, beef and pork in this case, stood head and shoulders above the competition in terms of tenderness and seasoning. From our most recent meal, I honestly had the best pad thai in years - the bright savory notes upheld by a mild underlying sweetness and notable smoky char were remarkable and made each mouthful of chewy noodles a delight. Just as derricious was the new khao soi where the curry's flavors exploded on our palates. Asides from beloved noods, the spicy eggplant's flavors popped while the roasted duck red curry was pleasant though surprisingly mild. Overall, this is undoubtedly the best Thai we've had in a while and easily comparable to Thai town greats like Sanamluang Cafe. read more

[Review #597] 2021 Yelp 100 Challenge (11/100) Ubon Thai Kitchen is located on the southeast side of Torrance Crossroads Shopping Center, directly south of In-N-Out. It's been a long week, & though it was a 3-day weekend, I'm still recovering & wasn't in the mood to cook. I was looking forward to trying a recommendation by Yelper Eriko N. but that restaurant was closed on Mondays... since I had Thai set for dinner tonight & found Ubon Thai Kitchen in my search. I couldn't find a current menu in the posted pics but they have a menu on their website, & found a current Love/Valentine's special offer... get a free drink (ice blended drinks excluded) with the purchase of $15. =) Though I wanted to try something different, I decided to stick with the basics so I have a measurable standard to check if their Thai dishes were up to par, & ordered SPICY BEEF SALAD (grilled beef, mixed greens, lemongrass, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, mint leaves, spicy lime dressing), CHICKEN PAD THAI (chicken, thin rice noodles, eggs, bean sprouts, scallions, crushed peanuts, lime wedge), CHICKEN PAD SEE EW (chicken, stir-fried flat noodles, Chinese broccoli, eggs, black sweet soy sauce). It was a quickie 20-mins. & my order was ready by the time I arrived. Since the cashier didn't mentioned the freebie drink, I inquired if I could get a THAI TEA. While waiting for the drink, I enjoyed the delicious scents wafting from the open kitchen that I can't wait to get home to eat. I was in & out in a couple of minutes, & was pleasantly surprised by the weight of my bag of 3. Each takeout box was stuffed to the hilt... with a decent portion of proteins & generous serving of noodles & salad. The Spicy Beef Salad wasn't all that spicy; I liked the lime dressing but it was watered down because I don't think the mixed greens (technically iceberg lettuce) were drained properly so there was too much water, hence diluting the dressing. Though I couldn't find any carrots, not a big deal but it's an ingredient in the dish according to their online menu, the salad was packed with loads of tender grilled beef. The Pad Thai was pretty good... I wished have the chicken slices were more uniformly cut, thought a couple of pieces were on the drier side. Loads of noodles that were just about al dente, the dish had good flavor but the bean sprouts were raw. :-| When I was pregnant with my firstborn, raw sprouts were one of the foods that should be avoided because they need to be cooked to avoid salmonella, listeria, and/or E. coli. I picked out the sprouts & blanched them in boiling water before serving it to my family. I liked the Pad See Ew, though the noodles were slightly mushier than I would prefer & a bit sweet. It had plenty of chicken & Chinese broccoli with a sizable serving of flat noodles. I tend to flip flop between these 2 noodle dishes because I haven't had one Thai restaurant that executes both equally well. At UTK, I prefer their Pad Thai over Pad See Ew with the exception of the raw sprouts; this is the best dish of the 3. Service was friendly & quick; I just wished they had mentioned my free drink instead of me hinting at them. I'm willing to bet that if I didn't hint at it, I likely would have paid & left without knowing about it (though their promotional signage is plastered by the pick-up counter) by the cashier's attitude/body language. The Thai Tea was pretty good but the cup had too much ice so the drink was a bit watered down by the time I got home. Prices are competitive with pretty generous portions, execution is mostly up to par. While there's plenty of parking spaces in the shopping center, I had to park farther away due to dinner rush & its location is next to several restaurants. No restroom here, so not sure if their neighbors will allow you to use theirs or if you can go to HomeGoods. The dining room is quite small & currently closed due to cv lockdown. The restaurant is COVID-19 conscious with social distancing measures in place: 6' apart, staff are wearing both mask & gloves, plastic partition between staff & customers, hand sanitizer on the pick-up counter. Ubon Thai Kitchen ranks a solid 3.5 stars, could be 4 if the execution was better. Overall, solid Thai food but nothing spectacular that lingers in your mind or on your taste buds to make you crave for more... nonetheless, it was an enjoyable & filling meal. Recommended: Chicken Pad Thai (I suggested blanching the raw sprouts for health & safety reasons), Spicy Beef Salad, Chicken Pad See Ew. read more

This is my go to Thai place whenever I visit my sister and her family in South Bay. We only have take out from here, but everything is still so tasty! The ingredients taste fresh and food is pretty authentic. Their Pad Thai noodles also do not get mushed up during take out like I have at other places. Portions are good and food tastes pretty authentic. I'm tryting to eat vegetarian and love that Ubon Thai has meat "protein" substitutes such as extra vegetables or tofu for almost all their dishes. read more

We love two Thai places and this is one of them. Customer service is always great and the food is always spot on. If I had to be critical, the prices are a tad bit high, but not awful. Favorite dishes here...the green curry with chicken and garlic pepper chicken. For comfort food, the chicken noodles. Oh, there is one issue, their peanut sauce is awful, so we never get satay when we order from here. It's waaaay too sweet and not very peanutty. I was craving some Thai so I decided to order for pick up at Ubon, a place I had heard good things about! I wanted to try something different so I ordered the duck noodle soup. The person I spoke with on the phone recommended the egg noodle and I'm glad I went with that! They told me it would take 15 minutes. The restaurant itself is located in a big plaza and located on the south side near the home depot and chipotle. It was a Saturday night around 7pm and the restaurant itself wasn't too busy so I was able to pay quickly and get back home to eat! The dish came with egg noodle, around 5 good sized pieces of duck, baby bok choy, scallion, cilantro, celery, green onion, and one mushroom - not sure if that was an accident lol. The soup was amazing, a perfect mix of sweet and savory. The duck was really tender and came with the skin. Pretty decent portion size that left me satisfied. We were actually on our way to another place for takeout when Ubon caught our eye. It's a little spot in a plaza full of stores and restaurants in Torrance. And being in a shopping plaza, there seems to be plenty of parking, depending on the time of day you arrive. Although the catfish is deliciously cooked, pairing perfectly with some rice, it comes in a pretty small portion for the price. Also, fair warning, if you dislike fish bones, then you'll likely not enjoy this menu item. It's super good, though! The Tom Yum was much creamier than what we were used to, but it was tasty. We meant to order the noodles with the Tom Yum, but my girl misspoke, giving us a laugh about it when we got home and found only soup. The mushrooms were my favourite part of this dish! You get a free Thai tea or coffee with your Yelp check-in! The Thai tea is decent here, if you like it sweet. We all have our preferences, and this Thai tea got the job done for me, while my girl had to stop after 1 sip. I'm sorry to say but the reviews here did not do this place justice for me. I got the chili basil chicken - way too sweet without a good chili flavor, and the portion was so sad compared to the price. On top of that, I saw that there was a special coconut drink (honestly it's a pretty common coconut drink from Thai and Vietnamese places) but it was a whopping $8/9. I was so shocked. I think they can only get away with these prices and taste cause the closest legit Thai restaurants are a bit far away. I could see how this place might be ok in a pinch, but I would unfortunately not come back as the taste is not there for me, and the price also is too high for its mediocrity. In a venerable food court of culinary delights. From powerhouses In-In-Out, to Chick-fil-A to Chipotle, Ubon Thai stands strong with authentic flavors variety of tastes and flavors. I'm the one in the family that likes spicy food so everything was mild, but flavorful. The Thai Fish Cakes were about as spicy as it got, they were not spicy but very very tasty. Loved the Pad Thai, mixed veggies, Thai fried rice, and Pad See Ew. The curries, the Yellow and the Panang were especially delicious (I'd give the nod to the Panang if I had to choose). Service was fast, about 20 to make the smorgasbord of food we got to bring home to enjoy. The restaurant itself is intimate (meaning small) so, if you arrive at a busy time you would either have to wait or get takeaway. I had their yellow curry and a Thai tea, and I loved both! I got take out and was surprised that it stayed hot through the drive home. While I've never met a bad yellow curry, this was a little blander than most, but just slightly. The Thai tea was nice and strong. The restaurant is located in a plaza close by In N Out so parking is plentiful but just avoid the crowd of In N Out-bound cars. Indoors is pretty small so I recommend getting takeout. Everyone working there were wearing gloves and masks so it definitely felt like a safe environment, minus the tight space. read more

I ordered the Thai Tea, Papaya Salad, and Pad Thai. The tea was good. Average. The price was normal. Papaya salad was ok. I felt like the Papaya was not fresh but marinated for a while. It's like the texture was there but not the flavor of Papaya. Maybe they keep a stock of Papaya marinated in vinegar/marinade amd scoop out when ordered. I guess I'm comparing the freshness to Thailand Papaya salad as this is my first time to have it in USA as my 1st time ever was in Thailand. Pad Thai was not so good. The flavor is somewhat ok, it's the presentation.. the noodles were over cooked and so soggy that there was no full noodle. Felt like I was eating baby food chewed so a baby can eat it. Pad Thai is noodles right? They should be long. I think my longest noodle strand was 2-3 inches and it's not the way I wanted to eat a pad Thai. The noodles need to be less soaked in water as [from what I assume they do in the back] they pull the already made noodles from a container and then stir fry. The cook needs to NOT stir fry too hard and chop the noodles up. I hope this review helps to improve their popular dish as if this is what customers want, then I can't come here anymore as it's a simple dish of sweet, salty, spicy NOODLEs [not crumbled noodles] I live close so I may try again, but not sure yet. read more
