Disclaimer: this is based on a one time visit. I stopped through Darien on my way up toTrumbull for lunch and thought I'd try a sandwhich at Upper Crust. Positives: friendly service, good music, clean place, nice selection Negatives: A bottled water, medium coffee, fruit cup and small turkey avocado sandwhich that doesn't come with any sides cost $16.50. There was not much meat on the sandwhich and it tasted mainly of bread and mayo. Maybe their other food choices are positioned better, but the pricing and sandwhiches definitely need some changes. The bagels are pretty good - not amazing but very tasty. My issue is the cream cheese; it has absolutely no flavor. In my humble opinion (mind you - not a new york city native so I can't pretend to be an expert) cream cheese should have a nice, every so slightly cheese-sourish flavor. Whipped or spread, both work for me. Upper crust cream cheese is more the whipped variety and tastes like marshmallowy air. nothing. These bagels are the best bagels in Fairfield county. The service is nice and awesome. I love it so much. I recommend it to all my friends. I work in an office nearby and we'll all go out to lunch and eat here. Once again the staff is remarkable. They're always willing to help to get the best bagel sandwich possible. read more

Very bad service. Employees were extremely short when taking orders and giving food, also the cream cheese seemed to be plopped in between the bagel, not spread as it should be. Babies crying everywhere, the playpen provided does not calm them down but instead riles them up. Not nice. Chocolate milk portions are horrendous, what am I paying for? I'm not a fan of this extremely over-priced and very average bagel shop. There are MANY better places within a 10 minute drive to get bagels. I have two issues: 1) The bagels are not that big compared to other places, but yet they cost more. 2) The taste is fine, but nothing special. I get that it's in the middle of charming little Darien, and that they have a play area for kids while the moms gossip and fret about life, so of course people will always go there. But if you really want a good bagel for a fair price, this isn't the place. Oh, and my daughter won't even eat their rainbow bagel because she doesn't like the taste, so if she had a Yelp user ID, I'm pretty sure the review would be 1 star as well :) read more

The bakery was great when I first started going there. The food is good but the can NEVER GET MY ORDER RIGHT. I ask for toasted bagel with VEGETABLE cream cheese and tomato but they always use normal cream cheese. Is it really that hard to get it right? Sometimes they don't toast it and sometimes they give me 3 bagels instead of 2! Overall a great bakery but they have to make sure to get orders right... read more

Decent bagels for the area. The bagels are good, pastries are mediocre but the service is always excellent. It's always quick and easy.

I enjoy the bagels at UCBC but I am of the opinion that if you are going to ask me if I want my bagel toasted and I say "No" that I actually mean no. If you aren't going to listen to the answer to your question, don't ask the question. It's pretty simple. read more

Watch what you buy. Bagels ok, but not special. Lunch sandwiches are 8 bucks. Some good, but expensive. Some are a joke. Prosciutto & tapenade....one slice of prosciutto, thin smear of tapenade, couple of basil leaves.on a miniature baguette. Nice sandwich, but come on! this sandwich has a seven dollar markup. Bagel was way over priced, no taste, even looks ugly, got huge hole in the middle, you can use it as a bangle bracelet. Can't make sandwich from it... they got the worst bagel in the area. I'm from NY, the people who thinks they got good bagels here, I want to take them with me, show them and treat them the real bagel. read more

So, I went in to Upper Crust for the first time after their renovation and wanted to like it so much... The renovation looked lovely - the place was pretty and inviting. And I loved the new children's play area (and so did my kids) - what a terrific idea. I envisioned it as the kind of place my girlfriends and I could gather regularly for lunch or coffee with our children. Seemingly perfect... Except for the food. It was incredibly disappointing. I don't have particularly high standards for a neighborhood lunch cafe, but this was hardly acceptable. I got tuna on a bagel and the tuna was just barely passable. As far as I could tell it was just straight out of a can, with some low-grade mayo mixed in. That's it. My son could have made a better tuna sandwich at home by himself. No flavor at all (how hard would it be to throw in some carrots and celery?), and barely enough to cover half the bagel. Super-disappointing. The same was true of the other items we ordered - made half-heartedly, sloppily, and with no substance or flavor whatsoever. Such a shame! It doesn't seem like it'd be that hard to really take this place up a notch - really, just add a couple of varieties of tuna-fish salad, egg salad, etc., some interesting bagel spreads, side salads (macaroni salad, bean salad), a few sandwiches geared towards children, and add a bit of flavor to their other offerings. Their new salad concept is a step in the right direction. With a few improvements in the menu & cooking, this could be a real "go-to" spot in Darien. (Also - there was no menu posted.
