My friend took me here and said it was a place where people go to get perceived--- oh LA, showbiz baby! I don't really like being perceived but the food here was pretty good. Not the best or freshest hamachi I've had but not not extraordinary and original in its own way. The highlight was the fish croquettes honestly. The dashi martini was just ok, I'll pass next time. We went for happy hour and got one HH omakase and one signature omakase and for three people it was good but we also took some home. Would recommend for happy hour. Had Uchi on my list of restaurants I needed to try, and saw they were participating in DineLA, so made a reservation and we all headed over. First, the ambiance is very nice, warm and welcoming. Staff were amazing also, very friendly and seemed versed in any things regarding the food. So we all did the DineLA menu, which was seven courses, I believe. All of the dishes were delicious, absolutely exceeded my expectations. Pork belly was perfect, nice and crispy on the outside, juicy inside, the grilled salmon with the candied citrus and ponzu wasn't overly salmon-y, which is always nice as it can be overpowering. The nigiri was delicious, as was the temaki.... if I had to nitpick, I'd say the broccoli katsu was the weakest element out of everything, but still good. Such a special experience coming to Uchi for the first time. My drink was made with yuzu honey and both the zero proof and regular drink were both so tasty. We ended up doing the omakase and every course was fantastic. It isn't just the sashimi itself, they add delicious flavor on top of the fish to enhance its taste and texture. This was my second time visiting Uchi. They have a small bar and indoor and outdoor seating. After having a great experience the first time, I made a reservation online and was excited to return to celebrate a birthday. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to my previous experience. The biggest disappointment was the service. Our server rarely checked in on us and was disengaged. As for food, we tried a variety of dishes including the crispy rice, hand rolls, brussel sprouts, and oysters. All the food was good, but it did take a while to come out. At least six of waiters and waitresses came to out table to deliver each course with an explanation - my guess is that the Uchi philosophy is whoever is available, serve its customers right away to maximize the flow or speed of dining experience, instead of one waiter or waitress for fixed tables, which often will let diners wait for a long time. I also noticed that other customers received a similar treatment with many different servers. Chef recommends to eat all three items (Ice Cream + ice cream ball, etc.) all together to get the best tasting at the last course, desert - indeed. Came here with no expectations but had an absolutely fantastic time at Uchi West Hollywood! We originally came in for DineLA and sat at the bar, where we had the pleasure of having Parker as our sushi chef. He was awesome and convinced us to switch things up and try the HH omakase for two instead and so glad he did! Everything was exceptional. The fish was incredibly fresh, the yuzu flavors were perfectly balanced, and even the cooked dishes were just as memorable as the sushi. I went on a Tuesday night for happy hour (happened to be all night). Although the HH course menu is much cheaper I didn't find it worth it as some of the dishes were misses. Their regular dishes are better. A friend and I got the course menu for 2 for $120 total , each got a $10 HH cocktail and got two a la carte HH items to share. Thoughts Below: Course Meal ($120): One of the 9 courses is a melon gelee... not sure if I would consider a little square jelly a real "course" but keep that in mind. The bartender also warned us there would not be many nigiris. My favorites were the hama chili sashimi, two nigiris (light and floral, could use more salt or sauce), the handroll (yellowtail crunch?), and seasonal tempura (served with a chili vinegar, tasted more chinese but I loved it). Did not like the pork belly skewers (flavor was not very interesting but it was tender) and the salmon was dry / slightly overcooked. Finally the dessert which was a layered trifle of sorts really missed with the cilantro granita. It tasted like a mouthful of cilantro and lacked sweetness. Maybe if they mixed it with a lemon granita it would be more palatable. The bottom two layers were great. All dishes are meant to be shared except the gelee, nigiri and handroll came with 2 pieces. Gyutoro Gunkan ($18 / 2 pc) - Perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I could eat a bunch of these. a5 Tartare ($25) - A tiny 2-4 bite tart shell. It is difficult to share (but we did it). Flavors were nice but I wish it had a little more acidity. Texture was very rich but balanced. Sawayaka ($10 hh-only cocktail) - Moderately strong and tastes just like the description. The sushi bar emptied out due to the late hour. No worry as we were able to speak to Connor in detail about our orders. The ebi maki was Devine. The hamachi Nigeria was smooth, soft and buttery. Keith was our attentive server. There is mood lighting in the restaurant. It is well appointed and designed. Parking is metered only. There may have been a garage but I did not see it. My wife and I visited for an early evening dinner. Disclosure, we've also eaten at the Uchi in Miami so we came aware in advance of what to expect. Beautifully prepared dishes, my wife absolutely loves this place. She'd give it six stars in her review. So why only four stars from me? Simply stated, this restaurant is an echo chamber. I like the modern design but I was virtually unable to hear our table conversation while competing with what almost sounded like a football match occurring in our midst. (FYI, the Miami location has a very different, much more intimate aesthetic.) We splurged on the Chef's Tasting menu. Every dish, OK, almost every dish was delicious. I'm not going to name them, you can view the photos. (Did the chef truly catch the rockfish himself? Our server said he did!). The one exception was our very last plate. Seemingly ironic for a Sushi restaurant, our Wagyu Beef course was well overdone. The server apologized and offered to replace it but we were quite honestly full by then so declined. Instead, the chef gave us a significant gift certificate for a future visit. We now happen to have a recently opened Uchi in Charlotte so the certificate will be put to good use. Uchi!! I'm slightly disappointed because I really wanted to love this sushi spot. Let's start from the beginning, we made a same day reservation for a Saturday evening and were seated within minutes, which was great. The interior décor is intentional, modern, and unique. The outdoor area looked cute with overhead heaters, though I'm not sure how effective they actually are. We sat inside near the door, which ended up being extremely cold, and Jeremy was our server, very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Unfortunately, the pacing of the meal really missed the mark. Food came out extremely slow, about 15 minutes between each roll. It may have been an off night, as the table next to us also experienced a delay with their drinks and ended up being offered upgraded liquor. We ordered the Greek black bream nigiri, hamachi yellowtail, cucumber salad, scallop, bluefin tuna, and cod. The cucumber salad was the first dish we tried and it was incredible, so flavorful that we were instantly on cloud nine and felt optimistic about the rest of the meal. The sushi itself was fresh, but the long wait times took away from the experience. About 35 minutes after ordering, we were told the cod was no longer available, which should have been communicated much sooner. While we were deciding on a replacement, another server, who hadn't been by all night came over and accidentally poured regular water into my girlfriend's sparkling water and nearly knocked over my wine glass. It felt awkward and careless, especially since the sparkling water was on her side of the table, while I was the one drinking still water. Jeremy did try to make it right by sending over an extra roll, which we appreciated, but unfortunately it ended up being our least favorite of the night. So we didn't eat it, and felt bad for wasting food. The only reason I didn't give three stars is because there was an attempt to save the experience, even though it ultimately fell short. We ended up heading to another sushi spot afterward to satisfy our cravings. Small details matter. Untimely pacing, missteps, and lack of communication can really impact an otherwise promising dining experience. Definitely room for improvement. read more

Hanging blonde oak panels against a dark ceiling adorned by a multitude of well-spaced, tiny bulbs in lieu of larger, dim light fixtures, hidden lighting behind the shelving along the back wall and behind the bar seating. The effect is a large, open room made to feel warm and intimate, almost cozy in spite of being fully packed. This ambience is classy. As. F***. Great place to bring a date you want to impress if you can afford it. Expensive, but you knew that going in from looking at the pictures so don't kvetch (yes I'm talking to myself). Very loud crowd on a Saturday night, but for the most part, Uchi manage not to blast the (mellow, bass-heavy and groovy) music over it! That shouldn't have to come as such a surprise, but so many places have yet to get the memo: let the music blend in with the conversation, not dominate it. OH MY GOD is the food good here! I just tried a few nigiri for the first time, loved two out of three. But first: the A5-grade wagyu beef skewer... makes me reconsider my red meat intake. Like increasing it. Three morsels that now define the Platonic form of "morsel" for me. The taste? Like if the Messiah came down and said "come, let me show you the true meaning of barbecue" (if the messiah were the proprietor of a three-Chevron French restaurant). Emphasis on the umami. Now: the dorade (black breem) ... absolutely melts in your mouth, tastes like you're sitting on a lawn near a beach and aren't worried about anything. The kanpachi (Japanese amberjack), lovely texture, crunchy and lightly spicy topping... For dessert, I got the fried milk. Yes, one can. Three fried balls of milk--you put the whole thing in your mouth and get crunchy warmth. And there's melty-vanilla ice cream topping a glop of chocolate ganache with bits of fried air on it, hidden by delicate sails of cocoa tuile--chocolate they make in house, spread super thin and let harden. The whole package is mind blowing. I almost forgot, I also got a couple of svelte, elegant salmon nigiri that made all of the other salmon nigiri I've ever had jealous. Service was exceptional. I sat at the bar, where Nick served drinks and suggested sushi, explained exactly what was happening with each dish. Very friendly, as were wait staff. It is the perfect spot for date night or for any occasion. I was blown away by the service. Empty dishes removed immediately, water always available, multiple servers and runners. Absolute perfection. Sushi chef Ray was amazing. Everyone was receptive to my likes and items that weren't my favorite and adjusted accordingly. I ordered omakase tasting menu and while I prefer an all sushi omakase experience, I tried the variety option that offered a wealth of hot and cold options. It included an oyster, sushi, tempura, sashimi, pork belly, grilled salmon, and hand rolls. More than enough food and provides a good foundation of the menu. My favorites were the sushi options because they were unique with a hint of citrus. Tempura has never been more delectable. There was only bar seating during their happy hour time since all the other tables were already reserved or taken up by other guests. I tried the happy hour omakase 9 course meal for 2 people. I would have to say everything was very delicious and well put together. Towards the beginning of the service, food came out extremely slow (especially the yuzu grape appetizer) which took about 30 minutes to come out and then subsequently the rest of the dishes, and towards the end, everything else started to come out faster and faster. I understand that higher end restaurants tend to take some time so you can savor and enjoy the dishes but I felt like it was very unenjoyable having to wait so so long for a tiny dish to come out. Another thing I noticed was that other people had done reviews for the 9-course for 2 and every dish that they got gave 2 portions respectively. I'm more so talking about the salmon and pork belly w/crispy rice as well as the last dessert. Other people next to us had gotten 2 servings of the dessert and the other foods I mentioned. I decided try Uchi's happy hour menu. If you sit at the cocktail bar, happy hour is all night from Sun-Wed. Other seats in the restaurant will only have happy hour 5-6pm daily if I remember correctly. I went on a Tuesday night. My quick happy hour 9 course omakase took about 2 hours...the other couple got there earlier than us finished around the same time as us so I think theirs took 2:30 hours. I'm not sure why it took so long and there were a lot of long breaks in between our courses. Keep in mind these "courses" are tiny. I think they forgot one of our courses but by the end we were frustrated and just wanted to leave. Having the bartenders take food orders / serve food while they're trying to take drink orders / make the drinks is, in my opinion, is too hectic. I felt bad that they were trying to keep up with the bar and kitchen and doing things simultaneously, with only two bartenders as well. They were really nice to us but service overall was slow especially the kitchen. Not much memorable food except for the A5 Tartare and the fried tempura zucchini for me personally. I thought the food was a bit saltier for me. I ordered more items as well so not every picture you see is part of the omakase. I don't think the happy hour omakase was worth it tbh. But if you're curious, give it try and maybe your experience will help different than mine. read more
