Food was really good along with the service. Would highly recommend it. Had idly, pakora, veda, dosa and cocnut rice. All of it was amazing.

Best Indian food around! Though not a strict vegetarian, I often eat meatless meals. This place has great veggie dishes that won't leave you feeling hungry. The Mango Lassi drink is very good here too... it helps counter the spices if you order something spicy. read more

I ordered M.L.A Pesarat with upma, which was suggested (as the house special dish!) by an attendant (server). The upma was extremely bland. Dosai was cold!! and therefore became rubbery. Had to wait for at least 20 minutes for the dish to arrive (since it was house special, remember!) and the result was a disaster. Horrible experience. Oh, and there were only 3 or 4 other patrons in the restaurant so it was not like very busy and the servers had their hands full. Anyway, will stick with Tower from here onwards. read more

This was such a great surprise on a Thursday night. After moving to NE Cary from the Cameron Villiage area in Raleigh, we were feeling a little bummed about not being close to all the downtown hot spots, but fear not - NE Cary is packed with excellent ethnic food restaurants. In fact, I've even started telling people I live in "Little India". I'm a fan of Indian food, but I had never had food like this - a totally different style than the usual selection of curry and potato dishes I'm accustomed to. Not only was the food delicious, but the service was very professional (I think the waiter called me ma'am every time I asked him a question). We weren't sure what to order, but the well-dressed Indian waiter had the perfect suggestion - we tried a pancake (with cheese, and veggies mixed in!), along with a spinach and cheese dish and some bread that we were expecting to be similar to Naan, but instead we received an inflated puffy thing (literally 1 foot in diameter). Great fun! And to top it all off....a rose-flavored milkshake. Great local secret that all the local Indians seem to know about - you know its gotta be good! Udupi Cafe made me fall in love with Indian food. My husband and I used to come here very regularly when we lived in the area. Everything tasted so incredibly good. Like, want to sit and eat in silence good. We've since moved to Berkeley, where Indian restaurants or groceries line every corner, but I still miss Udupi in Cary. read more

I have eaten here couple of times and each time its a big disappointment. Sometimes its the food, sometimes its the service and sometimes the price. They have no consistency in the food quality. Being from India, I know how Indian food is cooked. The item prices doesn't make sense to me at all. For example, today I took out 2 idly, sambar, little bit of Channa masala and paneer from buffet, it ended up costing me more than 10 dollars. The idly was not fresh at all. Even they charge more for a can of soda. I hate to say but I will never go back here. There are better vegetarian places to try. Avoid this place !!! I wish this was near my house... or do I? I would never lose weight! I went here when visiting a friend in Cary. I live in Boston, where there are many tasty non-vegetarian and vegetarian Indian restaurants that I have been to, so I did not have particularly high expectations. I WAS WRONG. We went on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, and the place was full of little kids (so much kiddy noise, but not the restaurant's fault). We got the buffet, and there were these metal trays like old school lunch trays to put the food in. I loved everything - every single thing - on the buffet. I've never had beets or green beans at an Indian restaurant before, and my friend has never willingly eaten a green bean before, but both were delicious. Not only that, but sometimes, Indian dishes start to all taste the same after a while, especially on the buffet. No so here - each dish had its own symphony of flavors. Whole Indian eggplants, paneer, chickpeas, etc, all used smartly. Nothing particularly spicy. The waiter came over and I said, "this is the best Indian food I've ever eaten" Then I saw he was holding a plate of dosas. He said, "Do you want these?" I almost cried. Then I solemnly nodded my assent. The only thing I would have wanted is a few different desserts. There were three - carrot halwa and two vermicelli dishes that were pretty similar. I love their food and have tasted only their buffet. Some of their buffet items hit the mark right away, but some other times, they are too salty.. My main critique is that they only serve poori as the 'bread' item, but they have so many side-dishes that are typically eaten with roti/ naan. I'm not sure if that means that the rotis should be ordered off the menu. I never order off the menu, since there are so many items on the buffet. Sometimes, when they have large parties, it get very chaotic..They should probably organize it a bit better and give large parties corner tables and not those right next to the buffet.. Also, it's hard to recognize staff from customers as they have no tags/ uniforms.. We are fairly regular to their buffet and have come to know the owner. My husband always talks to him, but lately I've noticed that he is super-cold to us, like we offended him in some way (although we never did!). I always see him chatting up with every other table around us.. This last time, he grabbed the plate from our table three times, while we were still eating.. The first time, I gave him the benefit of doubt, but when it happened two more times, I felt like he was just rude and he never said sorry or anything.. I was like, 'do you not have more plates inside that you need to grab our plates so much?' It is solely because of the owner that am not giving it a 4-star rating.. read more

4 stars for awesome food. I would take away 1 for bad service though..... But then we went for a buffet at an Indian restaurant, so my expectations were low to begin with. They have some delicious south Indian food - sambar, rasam, idli, dosa, utthapam, upma and good curries too. Taste and flavors of all the food was amazing. It was finger licking good. Even the coconut chutney was right on money. Each of the curries had distinct flavor and was yummy. I was impressed with the variety for a $8.99 buffet. All the south Indian items mentioned above plus 5 curries, daal-rice and fried rice, 2 desserts and a variety of chutneys and pickles. The naan was a turn off though - they used frozen naan cut in 8 wedges. Good idea for minimizing wastage, but I want house made naan in a restaurant. For the service, we asked the guy to get us 2 more dosas and 10 mins later we were still waiting..... Do this time I got off the table and walked up to him and reminded him off the dosa; 10 more mins..... But nothing. Finally our group decided to just finish our meals and call it a day. The dosa never came. The ambience was definitely authentic..... Bustling kitchen, stainless steel dishes, sambar running down the serving table pics of gods and goddesses .......all crammed tightly into a tiny space. But...... Food was awesome. read more

I had dinner at Udipi while I was on a trip to Raleigh visiting a friend. I have had food at other Udipi's (not the same management) in U.S. and was never disappointed. I had high expectations for this place and therefore did not mind driving in heavy rain to eat dosas here. One friend who lives in Raleigh warned us not to order idli as he has had a bad experience with idlis here. So we all ordered different dosas Masala dosa, onion dosa, Myrsore Masala dosa etc. The quality of dosa was below par and so were the tastes of Sambar and Chutney. To make things worse, bottom part all our dosas was stuck to the plate. The cook might have dropped them onto plate while the batter was still half-cooked. I am from South India and trust me udipi's there are known for their awesome sambhar and chutneys. I was disappointed and I am sorry to say that this was one nightmarish dosa experience in the U.S. This place is definitely not for people whose taste buds are used to the 'original' South Indian dosas. This place got 4.5 stars most probably because of people who have not tasted the original South Indian food (with all due respect to all fellow reviewers). read more

Love the buffet. I've had Indian food at a lot of restaurants in a lot of places (including San Fran where people are like blah blah our Indian/Mexican/Chinese/XXX food is so much better an more authentic than anywhere else blah blah), and Udupi tops them all. Seriously, I have never had South Indian food - or any Indian, vegetarian or not - that I like better than Udupi. Food is always super fresh, incredibly flavorful and well spiced, and each time I come the buffet is slightly different. Almost every time I go there is something new to try. This place is a "MUST GO TO" at least once every two weeks. I cannot tell you my favorite foods, because I truly like each dish I've tried here. I've been coming here about 4 years, and I simply think it's the absolute best Indian restaurant in the Triangle region. I've tried several, and Udupi reigns supreme! I will continue to come back as often as I can. LOVE this place....and my waitstaff, Aldin (SP?) helps me figure out how to add which spice to which food. My girlfriend, a friend and I went here because my girlfriend had gone previously with a friend and liked it. We got two different types of dosas, the Jaipur Paneer Dosa, and the Hyderabad Onion Dosa. We also got the Potato Bonda app. The Potato Bonda was my favorite part--it was crunchy on the outside, fluffy, soft and hot on the inside and tasted great. The tangy tamarind sauce went well with it and I was making that creepy satisfied face....until I ate my dosa. It's not bad...it was just missing something. My friend kept joking that it was simply missing meat, but I've had really delicious, flavorful vegetarian Indian food before where I barely remembered that meat existed. This was a little bland and unexciting; I kept wanting more out of each bite. I really wanted to like this place more, but all I ended up doing was pouring tamarind sauce over my dosa and calling it a day. My girlfriend suggested that maybe it was just that dish, but I don't think I'll be making the drive to Cary to try his place again anytime soon. read more

We've been going to Udupi for 10 years and have enjoyed it except for the last few visits to the lunch buffet. The quality of food has gone down hill. We decided to give it one more try. Instead of 2 or 3 dal dishes you now get 3 flavors of rice and 1 watery dal. Not as much selection of vegetables and the sambar which I always look forward to was not much better than a bowl of water. One of the tasty paneer dishes was changed and instead of paneer you get baby corn. We haven't seen pakora's on the buffet for a while either. I asked if they had changed chefs hoping there was a reason for the bad food but was told no. We won't bother to go back again which is a shame, we miss the old food at Udupi. read more

This is the best Indian vegetarian restaurant that I have been to in North Carolina (probably the US, but I haven't travelled all over). Their dinner and ordered items are OK, but their lunch buffet is the best. For $12.99, there is a wide variety of Indian vegetarian foods, that you would not generally see in many other indian restaurants. It is certainly a place I would recommend people who like to eat Indian food, and I take visitors to Udupi. read more
