Ugly mug sells ugly tasting food. I got Heinz mustard in a packet with my nuggets. The frozen crab claws tasted like sand. The mozzarella sticks I WISH tasted like sand, because they tasted like cheesey death rolls. The fried broccoli had a gooey center between the 'tempura' crust and actual vegetable that could have been cheese and could have been doo... do you you want to have an edible experiment for $90? We didn't. But we did order it, and now I have 3 extra lbs and the beer I spilled all over my crotch to show for it. Moral of the story: if there are lots of people around the establishment, yet the restaurant is still able to seat you in 10 minutes, there's a catch. And that catch isn't coming from the nearby ocean one street away. It's coming from TGIFridays and it's going to taste like previously frozen, but recently microwaved rodents from petsmart. read more

Bartenders cant even pour a decent glass of Guinness and their fish and chips was frozen-tasteless-crap(mind you they are a located in a port-village) and the chips were cold and stale....my only saving grace was to drown it in malted vinegar and wash it down with an abhorrently poured pint of Guinness . This is a serious issue. This place is not good. There is no debate about whether or not this is true and this is fact. It's as factual as the Earth is round. They have bad mozzarella sticks...I didn't know that bad mozzarella sticks were able to exist but they do here. The Crab Claw appetizer tasted like the crabs had been killed and frozen in 1937; thawed in 1966, frozen again and then thawed last week, kept in the fridge and then served to me today. What I'm trying to say is that they weren't good. I'm not angry. I had a nice enough time but please, if you are at all interested in eating anything that anyone would consider tasty then go somewhere else. I have a German Shepherd that loves food. Every once in awhile I will feed her people food. We had five leftover chicken fingers and I wouldn't feed them to my German Shepherd. read more

Good food at reasonable prices. Menu selections typical for bar food but of better quality than most. Really good soups and I like their chili. Nestled in the middle of all the shops and restaurants in Cape May, the Ugly Mug isn't anything special, but it's not bad either. It has a classic bar feel, a giant menu, and decent variety of beers and other drinks. Food is interesting... Mass produced ingredients from a bag in many cases, but the end result still tastes pretty decent. The fried flounder wrap is especially good, as are the wings. The chips and dips definitely leave something to be desired, though. The interior is a bit cramped, but not terrible, and they have outdoor seating as well, at least during the summer. A handful of TVs, but it wouldn't be my choice of venue to watch the game due to their poor visibility. Restaurant has a policy of not splitting checks, and only one credit card is allowed. Prices are a tad on the expensive side, but that's typical for Cape May. Parking, as is the norm in Cape May, would be a pain, so just walk if you can. Overall, I'd probably come back, but it wouldn't be my first choice. read more

A breath of fresh air in the midst of Cape May's shopping "district" - my husband and I were thirsty and the Ugly Mug was just what we needed. The service was unexpectedly friendly, especially by New Jersey standards. . .and, they brew their own beers - I ordered their Summer Shandy which was light, citrus-y, and quite refreshing. My beer snob of a husband gulped down some sort of hoppy IPA and was admittedly impressed. Mugs (not necessarily ugly, as the bar's name suggest) hang from the ceiling adding an interesting and memorable touch. It's a fine place to stop in for a bite while wandering through Cape May shopping. Food was decent, nothing mind-blowing. Service was friendly enough, but a bit sparse. I have a feeling during the summer, it's just a bunch of kids who's parents told them to go get some job. We had prompt initial service, but were left waiting for a goodly while after our drink orders went in and we asked for another minute to think (it was on the order of 10 minutes). Didn't get a steak knife with the steak. Little things like that that aren't deal-breakers, but neither do they impress. We had the sweetest server with very efficient service unfortunately the food was horrible and barely edible. The French dip sandwich was gray meat with no taste and served on a soggy bun. The lobster roll was bland and mushy as if somebody chewed it up and regurgitated it back on the roll. I don't know who tapped their kegs but both the UFO white and the shandy were flat two days in a row. The UFO white was so flat that we sent it back. I loved the lobster roll and thought that it was well-priced at 18.99. It was served with melted butter which was a plus. There was so much lobster meat in this sandwich that I didn't even have to bother eating the roll or the bag of chips that it was served with. I also had the crab melt which was a generous portion and equally as good as the lobster roll. The service was efficient and friendly despite being extraordinarily busy. I would like to give this place five stars since I have been coming here for years but they seriously need to figure out their tap situation. read more

We ate there this past Sunday. Sat in their covered-over front area. We were a party of 7. Service was good. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal. Started out with loaded fries, wings, fried green beans, and crab claws. They were all good. Two of us got the Carolina burger, which was delicious. One person got a personal pizza, which was huge, thin-crusted and good. One person got a crab salad on salad, which that person liked. Good draft beer selection. It also helped that it was a beautiful day, and unseasonably warm for December! It's important to realize that this is a bar/restaurant. Ugly Mug can be summed up by saying, meh. My wife and I decided to try here for lunch while in Cape May. They had a decent amount of seating outside when we arrived. Our waitress was slightly attentive, but didn't seem overly friendly. I decided to order a Sriacha burger since I love Sriacha. The burger was incredibly bland. It felt like the meat needed salt and pepper to remedy this, but I guess they don't do that there. The ciabatta bread was also falling apart due to all the sauce. They should of toasted the bun so it could of stayed together. I was not overly impressed with Ugly Mug, and won't be in a huge rush to return. read more

It was like they put a piece of cheese on the bread and put it in a toaster oven. The fish and chips were okay. Not bad but not good. It was unremarkable. The cheeseburger was laarrge. The Mic had had some lean years, and had developed into a more tourist-focused, less locals hangout over the past few years. But the food had improved, if gotten pricier. We go and keep going back because it is a cool place to hang for a bit. The thought behind the mugs hanging from the ceiling, the locals and seasonal regulars are always interesting. Nice to go off season for a nice IPA and pickies (finger food) pizza is good as well. They have a lot on the menu and with anyplace, at any time you can come across a bad day in the kitchen. I have not had that experience yet but then again for me it is a beer and a burger place. Wait staff is friendly and works very hard when it is crowded. Service wasn't the best. Waitress seemed like she didn't care and had no personality. We ordered: Fried calamari- OK. Nothing special. Buffalo wings- tasty especially for frozen chicken wings. I liked the wind sauce. Burger- pretty great with crab cake and cheese on top- the crab justified the price of $14.99 for a burger. Crab cake- awesome with lots of crab and very large. May be the largest crab cake I have ever had. Lobster roll- also very good and nice size. 1 1/2 lb lobster- also good, especially the meat in the claws. I didn't like that they gave chips instead of fries with burgers/ sandwiches especially when a burger is $14. For fries with a burger or sandwich, it is an extra $4 and the side of fries isn't that big or impressive. They also had a very poor beer selection especially since the name of the bar has "Mugs" in it. And the one beer we actually wanted was out. We ordered mix drinks which were $8.50 to $9 although the prices of the drinks are not listed on the menu which is annoying. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Our food came pretty quick. hey could use more stalls in the bathroom. It is a pretty large restaurant and the womens restroom I was in only had two stalls. If they gave fries instead of chips and had a good beer selection, I would have given 4 stars. I think the beer selection is a big deal in a pub looking restaurant. read more

The name of the restaurant was honestly what got me to go in. We stopped for a quick lunch on a Sunday afternoon so we only went for sandwiches. My boyfriend got the pork sandwich and fries, he said it was delicious and super filling. I liked the fries because it was very lightly salted so that makes it easy for the consumer to control the salt portion. I had the crab salad sandwich on wheat, and what can i say, it was HUGE, a very generous amount of crab salad and it was full of actual crab meat that tasted very fresh and delicious. The prices were very good for the amount of food we got and how good it was.
