This place definitely exceeded my expectations, albeit they were quite low. Jumped in here around 5:30pm early Monday evening. My girlfriend had received a gift card for this restaurant and I was itching to spend it. We got an assortment of nigiri, sushi rolls, and hot plates. The nigiri itself I thought was OK. Just not good enough for the price point. We tried the Hamachi and Trevally. Love both of these fish but 17 dollars for two pieces of nigiri is steep We had the salmon shisho maki roll. Great lemon flavor. Not sure if I would get again. The two items that made this place four stars for me weee the hot plates. The dumplings were amazing and the lamb sesame noodles were quite good as well. Overall, good food. Just wouldn't go without a gift card. Thanks for the experience! read more

My family loved our lunch at 167 sushi! We came with a party of six and were seated quickly. The staff was kind to walk us through the menu as we had multiple shellfish allergies and let us know what could be made without shellfish. We ordered a lot of different food items family style, and especially loved the miso soup, the cucumber salad, the crispy tuna rice (although I wish this portion was bigger!), and the duck fried rice. My sister and I got the large omakase and the quality of fish was excellent. Overall an incredible meal! Be warned, the authenticity of the restaurant also translates to their size, it is a very small restaurant with small tables, and all of their seats are high top. I LOVE raw fish, and lately I feel like every place I've been going I get a weird taste or texture and am icked out by their raw fish. That was not the case here. Finished a comedy show at the Galliard and were looking for a bite to eat so we waked over to 167 Sushi to try our luck. Having been to all the other 167 establishments including this location back when it was the original spot, I already knew I'd be a fan. For some reason I never made it over to try the sushi though. We weren't quick leaving the show and other people had the same idea, but we waited for maybe 20 minutes before some seats opened up. We had a cocktail while we waited. We weren't starving so we ordered a salad to start one of the rolls a special and some Nigiri. Everything was absolutely fantastic and the chef was so nice showing us different items to try. It was also at the end of the night and he insisted that we could continue to order as long as we wanted And not to worry about the time we really enjoyed the small space and sitting at the bar with the intimate experience while I love the other 167 locations I can't wait to go back to the sushi bar. read more

WOW!!! 10/10! I make sure to always stop in for a lunch when visiting this area and this place truly never disappoints. This visit was out of this world in particular because of their special - the toro skewers! It was one of the best things I've ever eaten - super flavorful and literally melted in my mouth. The oysters were also lovely and fresh with some nice sauce. The sushi and nigiri was great too- we had the soft shell crab roll and bluefin tuna nigiri. Not pictured, we also had the duck fried rice and spicy tuna crispy rice. Spicy tuna crispy rice was great but pretty standard. The duck fried rice was super unique with chunks of crispy rice throughout and scallions. We shared some wine - they have a great selection. Wow. I am speechless. Coming from NYC I am blessed with great sushi and Japanese regularly, I didn't have overly high expectations for 167 Sushi but was looking forward to the meal. When I tell you this place absolutely blew my socks off I am not lying. It was INCREDIBLE. Each dish we had was delicious down to the last morsel to the point I was scraping the bowl. I had the Lobster Bao Buns, Toro Skewers, Scallop Sashimi and Tuna Crispy Rice. It was all divine. The Lobster, Toro and Scallops were some of the best dishes I had while in Charleston. Not only was the food great the service was impeccable. The man behind the bar (dont know his name but was from Philly) was a fantastic host and added to our experience. I love this place and try to come everytime I'm in town. The fish is so good and fresh and the preparation is always incredible. I got the small omakase and there was a trout piece that the waiter had said was everyone's favorite and it truly was so amazing. I am absolutely obsessed with their sister Restaurant 167 Ross so wanted to try the sushi restaurant. The sushi was excellent and very creative, it had a thin slice of citrus on it and I had no idea where it was coming from until I looked closely and saw that it was actually on top kind of blended with the salmon. The crispy tuna was amazing and so was the lobster fried rice. It is definitely worth a try, but definitely won't be a staple because of the price. read more

This isn't a high-end sushi restaurant; this is a hipster gastro-pub that serves sushi, and I think that's important to keep in mind before visiting. There is a huge focus on fresh product and local ingredients, rather than traditional sushi ingredients and flavors. The chefs have mastery of traditional techniques, but then apply local microgreens and hipster concepts. If I went back, I would opt for the omakase rather than ordering for myself, as I think the experience would be worth it. We had the salmon, big eye tuna, soft shell crab, and walu "fresh catch" specials, as well as the shishito pepper special, and then had 2 of the regular rolls. We were also served a walu amuse bouche. Everything was tasty. Portions were restrained. The servers were very helpful, though when it's busy there can be quite a delay between ordering and receiving your dish. We were seated at the sushi bar, and it was fun to see the orders being made, though it's a pretty obstructed view relative to many other sushi bars I've been to. Selection of wine and sake was good. If you want sushi, I would go somewhere else. If you want to experience local culinary talent riffing on the idea of sushi, this is your place. read more

This experience goes into my top 3 omakase experiences I've ever had. We split the large between 2 of us and shared a few small plates. The fish was fresh and the accompaniments paired well with each bite. The octopus was phenomenal, I don't care for octopus much and I would order that again. We also had the lobster boa, which didn't quite hit the mark for us, love the concept just didn't smash like we were hoping. We also had the noddles, which were tasty. I heard great things about their Lobster Bao (and sushi!), so just had to come check this out on my latest visit to Charleston... As expected, the place was super-small. Only 3 full tables, and the rest of the seatings were bar stools! I actually hate bar-stool seatings (especially for meals)...but I figured the foods may be worth it? Since this was part of my solo shopping excursion, I stopped in alone around 2:30 pm. I thought that this would avoid the busy crowd, and the claustrophobic setting during the rush hour...and I was right in doing so. I was able to slide right in without a wait. BTW, they won't let you make RSVP for a table of 1 on Resy's (?!?), so I kind of had to wing it. Thankfully, there were actually full tables open at the time I arrived...but I figured I should sit at the bar since alone. Despite my disenchantment with their super-awkward seating situation (again, mostly bar stools!), I loved how the place was well air conditioned! In fact, the ambiance was much more tolerable than I had anticipated. I am not a fan of small space, but I gotta admit that there was a certain charm to this tiny joint. So yes, I actually survived bar-stool dining alone! Now the best parts...their foods! I ordered the Lobster Baos, and the Dumplings...both of which I've seen on Yep. Believe me, I came with very high expectations. Well, here's the deal. The Lobster Baos were AMAZING...every bit as good as I anticipated! Although it came in a set of 2 (instead of 3, as seen in some of the Yelp pictures?), I thought the generosity of the Lobster in the buns more than made up for it. Not cheap, but they were loaded with seafood...and even the buns were super-plush! SO amazing!! Then the Dumplings. Although these were delicious (am betting everything on their menu is at the very least delicious!), they just didn't live up to my expectations. Somehow, I expected this amazing, melt-in-your-mouth experience? However, the dumplings just weren't that soft or juicy. Also, I thought the presentation wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. Still, no regrets trying this. Overall, I thought the foods here were exceptional. Possibly the best Japanese in Charleston?? BTW, the foods came out relatively fast...something I didn't expect. Also, bar-side service was very good! Anyway, am so glad I finally checked out this gem, and I definitely intend to return and try their sushi rolls...and probably the Lobster Baos again!! read more

We were in Charleston for a field trip, another dad and I needed to feed 4 hungry young teenagers. The Maitre-D came out and went out of his way to accommodate us. With no reservation, (I'd recommend making one) we were sat at the sushi bar for 6 within 15-20 minutes. And were offered water while we waited. Now this restaurant is quite small but the ambiance is one full of mutual foodies and allows the kitchen to keep the quality extremely high. Testament to that was watching the sushi chef receive two tempura shrimp for a roll we orders which he promptly sent back due to them being over cooked. Now the food, just rocking! We destroyed every plate ordered. Each of us had a smile or just the look of disbelief of the amazing food we were savoring. Each of the boys had tried something they had never tried, we only had one who was not a raw oyster fan. We left minds blown and all sorts of satisfied from that meal. Well done! read more

Sit at the sushi counter, it's the best spot in the house. Super friendly chefs who love to chat as they work. Everything was delicious but the standouts were the Ocotopus which had an amazing sauce and were super succulent. The other was the local flounder nigiri which was just so fresh tasting with a clean mouth feel. I really wish they had more local fish especially at this price point. It's definitely one of the more interesting sushi places to go to. On a side note oak barrel sushi is closing at the end of the year so if you haven't been there it is a must.
