Richard - the stylist - was amazing (I have a lot of hair so it took a few hours) but he was easy to talk to and did exactly what I asked for (which I always had trouble in the past) I'm giving this only 4 stars because Richard isn't there anymore! The salon is clean and the other stylists seemed good as well so I'll try it again with a different stylist but if it doesn't go well ill need to find Richard again!! This particular location is the worst !!! I have been to the one in Paramus a few times and always find them helpful and well stocked. Every time I go to the Clifton location they have plenty of sales associates but no one seems to actually want to work..I have gone in there at least 4-5 times bc it is close to my home but the sales associates act so annoyed if you ask them for help. This store is close to my house so I went there recently twice. The first time they had a free gift promotion if you spend $21.50 on Ulta cosmetics. Believe me, I tried to find products I needed to make that total but several items were out of stock and I wasn't going to buy something I didn't need. The sales girl told me shipments come in on Thursdays. Well that does me no good....I'm at the store now! Knowing they are offering a promo, why not have enough stock on hand? I went back today and again, two things I was looking for were out of stock or not sold anymore--no one seemed to know, which I found odd. I don't know why items are on their website but not in the store. The cashier asked if I found everything I wanted and I said no, that items were out of stock. She said shipments come in on Tuesdays, a different day than what I was told previously. Very frustrating! What's the point of telling me about shipments when I'm at the store now???? As far as Ulta itself, I hate those low to the ground shelves. Not only is it hard for me to kneel, but I can't read the signs or prices on those shelves near the floor. What are they thinking? I've been to other Ulta stores, but Clifton has the worst parking. It's next to Trader Joe's and other stores and there were times I left because there were no spaces available. I love that Ulta is only a few minutes from my home and I can indulge in my make up fix without trekking to the mall. Think a combination of Sephora on a smaller scale with a great selection of drug store brands, great variety of hair tools plus a salon. I find I can run in quickly to pick up what I need and they usually maintain their stock well. The sales help can be hit or miss, you usually have to hunt someone down who may or may not be able to help you. The Lancome and Clinique specialists (Beatriz and Yvonne ) are the most professional and knowledgeable. Today I was lucky enough to find Debbie and Eva who were both very sweet and helpful. Ulta has a good Loyalty program, (points for purchase that can be used for future purchases. Also look for coupons ($3.50 or 20% off) in the Sunday papers (high end brands are not eligible for the discount but there are plenty of other products to use it on ) If you sign up for the Loyalty program Ulta will occasionally send other coupons, samples and offers in the mail. read more

This place was a terrible experience for me. First of all the layout doesn't make sense, but putting that aside was the customer service, or should I say lack thereof? There were plenty of people on the floor, but not one offered to help me find what I was looking for. There were 4-5 employees at the Loreal counter too busy chatting with each other to help anyone. Then I was stuck in line with only one poor employee having to ring people up. No one provided support for her and she rushed through our transaction. This review is for the salon. The two associates in the salon today could not have been worse. I had an appointment for cut and color, and had confirmed the appointment via their automated email system two days ago. Neither of the associates could articulate anything for the first five minutes of me being there other than "we tried to call you." Actually stating the problem would have been more appropriate to start a conversation. After my probing to find out why I was being told only those five words, I found out the stylist quit, and while they claimed to have tried to call, I have no missed calls from Ulta. Additionally, the male associate essentially called me a liar when I explained that I had no missed calls from Ulta, but confirmed my appointment via the email that was sent. Apparently, "they don't do that." Interestingly enough, I have the email proof that they do do that. They did not offer to reschedule and only continued to blame me for their inability to keep an appointment that was never cancelled with their client. We were basically just KICKED OUT yes - KICKED OUT - of Ulta mid shopping. The lady was so rude and no where did they have a clear sign that stated they close at 6pm on Sunday. The close time isn't the problem, the way the Clifton staff goes about handling this was atrocious. I was lucky to find Niurily at Ulta (Clifton, NJ). She is always on time with her appointments, always very pleasant and approachable. I have been doing my hair with Niurily for about two months now and can honestly say that I am very happy. My hair is curly and she blow dries it nice and straight without burning my scalp or skin. I had an issue in the Clifton store today. There was a problem with the order in which a coupon, reward points and an egift certificate were entered into the system. To make a very long story short, the manager contacted IT to remedy the problem. They were useless and referred her to guest services who were even more incompetent. I stood in the store at the register for at least 45 minutes while the manager was given the run around by guest services. She repeatedly told them that the customer was standing there and would like to check out. They told her that they sent an email to me issuing me a new egift certificate since mine would not work. It did not arrive in my email until one hour after I left the store! Hopefully it will work when I try to redeem it! PLEASE BE AWARE THAT GUEST SERVICES IS TERRIBLE! I am very disappointed with the staff at this Ulta. I was planning on spending a lot of money there, but the staff refused to even acknowledge my existence. When I asked for help in finding a concealer, the worker simply handed me a makeup sponge and walked away. Pass by this place everyday on my way home from work and decided to drop in to see what they have and if I can find a specific hair product I have been looking for by Nexxus. The store has a lot of beauty products BUT no one to help you. Searched around the hair product area couldn't find Nexxus tried to find someone to ask couldn't locate anyone on the floor so went to the register where one lady was calculating receipts (possibly the manager) I said excuse me as I stood in front of her and absolutely no response! Let's assume she didn't hear me I literally, the only person by the registers stood there for a minute and she didn't even budge. I truly feel sorry for spurned shoppers but I've had mostly great experiences shopping at this Ulta. If I need help choosing, there's plenty of support on the floor. I've returned several items (lip color that changed once on my face, an applicator that wouldn't work, etc.) with zero problems. Maybe because I have that little insider card ? The prices aren't the best (i.e., Target is ~ $2 less on drugstore items) but I love having Stila a short drive from my house as well as tons of choices for wavy-hair care products. Absolutely ridiculous treatment. I've been here a few times and have had the same horrible experience multiple times but today was the last straw. I am a mexican, brown skinned women who went in with my melinated puerto rican friend. We were followed quite aggressively and the staff even went over the intercom and said "security to asile 1" when we were the only two customers in that aisle. Upon asking one of the workers for where the bathroom was, I left the products I had been holding with my friend and went to use the facilities. I was the only one in the bathroom and moments later an employee came to my stall and shook my door. I'm shaking as I write this. My friend and I would have bought more but we were so unbelievably uncomfortable we immediately left to pay and were still being watched my multiple employees- including a women talking into a walkie- talkie right behind us. My friend wears a gold chain- and when she went to checkout the employee coldly said "I like your chain- where did you get it?" This is blatant racial profiling and microagressive. Salon review- I had a hair color w Shanna. Started very unfriendly and pissed off. She was quick to apply the colour, but when she was done washing my hair, she simply put me under the hairdryer by the washers and left me there for 8-10 minutes and I was done. I've been to different Ultas before and never left salon "unfinished" She didn't even bother to dry a part of my hair to check the color. Luckily she didn't mess up my colour I will definitely not go back there and will not recommend her to anyone, because she is not professional and clearly doesn't like what she does as far as her profession. read more

Really wish I could give it a 0! I'm fairly new to ulta! I had previously visited this store without a problem. But I had bought a brush that I decided was not for me and when I went to return it without a receipt they gave me a big problem! They insulted me and said they couldn't take it because they don't know where I got it from and are assuming I bought it somewhere else and are trying to return it there! Then after showing them the return policy that they have on the website that states "without a receipt you get store credit at the items lowest selling price" Meanwhile they said they absolutely couldn't take it back even after showing them the policy. Then I spoke to a manager and she whipped out this big flashy sign that was hiding behind their dusty register that stated that without a receipt they couldn't take back the item! I would have understood if the return policy would be displayed. In conclusion I ended leaving unhappy! I then followed by calling the Customer service number and she agreed that I had the correct return policy she advised me that the district manager would give me a call! It has now been over two months after calling the customer service several times contacting them through email. I have yet to receive a call!! I WILL NEVER SHOP AT ULTA AGAIN! This review is for "the makeup artist at the salon " the only reason I booked an appointment was because Sephora was over booked and my makeup artist was not available but never again, she was rude and sarcastic, did a terrible job. If you need your makeup done I recommend Sephora or Mac stay away from this place. You pay $50 , no product and then you have to deal with her attitude. So I got a haircut from someone who apparently was a color specialist .. I went in specifically for a haircut and to thin out my hair. And the lady who scheduled me failed to let me know that the guy she set me up with had just started getting into hair cut and styling .. so that's the one thing. the stylist is sick (which ok ... I was too.. but cmon) doesn't even ask me if I wanna hang my coat, not a lot of interaction which is ok. I showed him a picture of how I wanted my hair. Towards the end I asked if he was gonna thin my hair out and he asks me .. "well do they use the shears on you?" And I'm just like I Dk maybe? I'm not the hair stylist... he didn't have his own so he borrows someone else's .. that one wasn't working borrows someone else's .. and I feel like he still didn't know what he was doing ... I'm not rude and I try to conceal things.. from the front the hair looked fine.. I get home and this is that back looks like .. to my horror I started crying.. I did call them and they refunded me for my cut .. but come on Ulta.. do better.. I'm stuck with this for a while. read more

Unlike Sephora, Ulta has both high and low end items. Ulta never gives you a free sample with purchase (Sephora generally does). The last 3 times I've gone to Ulta they have managed to mess up my transaction. Twice I had to go back in and ask for the free gift with purchase. This last time I went in and spent $20. I provided the cashier with a coupon for $5 off the purchase and the cashier took the coupon scanned it and I assumed I had $5 off the total. Normally I can do math in my head, but the line was long and I was in a rush (my mistake!). So this morning I look at my purchases to find that I was charged $21.40. No $5 off was applied. I called to inquire and they told me I would have to come in for them to "figure out" what happened. Seriously? Terrible customer service. I will no longer be shopping here. Double and triple check your receipts because chances are they screwed you (and I truly believe on purpose since it keeps happening). read more

I came in here to use up some gift cards so I didn't have to pay shipping for one item. I came in at 10:15 on a weekday in January. The store was quiet and I saw at least 6-8 employees. Not a single person talked to me, in fact when I was near the high end makeup they appeared to be two women training or talking store business but they didn't say hi or even look at me when I looked at them while walking by. They had staff sweeping and I was expected to move out of their way and while they were restocking the store, the item I needed wasn't on the shelf as that section wasn't touched yet so I had to hunt someone down. I noticed the store looked filthy for a beauty shop and would never go near an open product there. Dust all over fixtures, makeup smeared on shelves, dirty testers, products for sale on shelves that were open & tested. Having worked for corporate offices of beauty retailers I can tell you that if a store can't remove layers of dust or clean up around testers those testers aren't in good shape either. They have a good selection but I would not trust my health to anyone there applying products to me and will continue to mostly shop online. read more

Bought an item where if you spend a certain dollar amount, you get a free item at the register.. So I did.. Went to the register completing forgetting about it until I was almost out the door.
