This Ulta location is like all the other Ulta locations we've been to. Good. They're all about the same. This is the only Ulta location in Durham. You can find it, and many other big-box stores like Best Buy and REI, at Renaissance Center. Renaissance Center is the busy shopping center across the street from The Streets at Southpoint shopping mall. It's conveniently located just off I-40 exit 276 (Fayetteville Road). My wife can't remember if she's been to this Ulta before. During this visit, she picked up a Wet Brush Pro Shine Enhancer for $17.99 and a five-pack of invisibobble for $10.00. The total local sales tax was 7.5%. Jennifer checked us out and she was great. Polite service with a smile. My wife is a member of Ultamate Rewards. It's free. At checkout, all you have to do is tell the cashier your phone number (tied to your rewards account). Like other loyalty programs, the more you spend at Ulta, the more you get back in discounts. I used the men's room by the salon. It was clean, but out of paper towels. read more

This is a great ulta location. I can always find what I need here! A lot of the time they always have what I need in stock in comparison to the other Ultas I have visited which is nice. They have a very nice press on nails selection and i love that I can find drugstore makeup and high end makeup here, and perfume! There are some things I have to go to Sephora for because Ulta doesn't carry it, but they've started to carry more stuff which is nice. Overall, a great spot for all my beauty needs! read more

Bottom Line: A cosmetic store in the Renaissance Center shopping center that has a wide variety of beauty stuff but is a bit cramped. Overall, I like Ulta Beauty and I find most stores to be very similar. While this location seems to have all of the variety and product of other stores, the layout did feel a little awkward and cramped. But maybe, its because I visited in early December and they had extra inventory in preparation for the holidays. Anyway, Ulta Beauty has a huge array of beauty and body products like makeup, nail care, perfumes, shampoo, hairdryers, etc. They carry some of my favorite brands and items like Clinique lipsticks, bareMinerals foundation, Urban Decay eyeshadows, OPI nail polish and Wet hairbrushes. Most beauty items I am looking for are at Ulta but occasionally I also venture to Sephora or Blue Mercury to round of my collection of goodies. Ulta's wide variety of items include selections that make nice gifts like spa products and lotions. During the holidays they have lot of specially packaged gift sets, robes and such. There was this blonde white woman following us for no reason. We were walking around every aisle and instead of doing her job, she decided to follow us like she had nothing to do. I don't understand why she would follow us around, there are cameras. But we all know why. We are Black, and apparently some people can't get over themselves to not act racist or immature. I love ULTA! But this location is dirty and under stocked! The samples are a mess and there are no clean applicators or tissues available. Almost every product is sold out (basic things like foundation brushes and popular brands of mascara). I have been 3 times this month hoping it was just an after Xmas issue, but it is worse each time. They are also VERY pushy about getting the credit card. I need a new nearby makeup spot for sure. read more

Not a good location. I love ulta and their products. Love their rewards program even more! I've been purchasing "high end" makeup for over 15 years from the brand. This store does not represent the brand well. Poorly stocked, poorly laid out, and poor customer service. I worked retail; I get that there's tough days and it can be a difficult job- but no matter the struggles of day I always gave my customers respect and a smile. I've been to this location multiple times because of proximity and it's not even worth it to go in- buy online to save yourself or go somewhere else. Too many bad experiences. This store is convenient, and closer than either the Walgreens or the Sephora, and ironically enough, is a store that carries products from both, which continuously baffles my sense of who they think their target demographic shopper is...especially since only having a few of the high end, you really never know what they're going to have. So it's always this grab bag, but it's a full price grab bag. I was never compelled to negatively review the place until, while getting in my car to leave (the Nordstrom Rack opening), someone representing ULTA, did a drive by on me and another passer by, informing us that if we were not shopping there, we would be towed. The store was not even open yet. REALLY?! The first business to come to this shopping center that will actually draw a line/crowd (of WOMEN) and you want to harass them? Her logic is lost on me. I prefer Sephora but I also hate going to the mall, so Ulta has more or less become my go-to quick stop for cosmetics. They carry my two must-haves: Urban Decay and Too Faced. They've also got an impressive selection of O.P.I. polishes as well as several other items that I always find myself needing (facial wipes, toner, moisturizer, etc.). What I like most about Ulta, other than its convenient location, is that it carries a wide variety of cruelty free products, perhaps even more than my beloved Sephora does. I have also have only good experiences with the staff there. For the most part they are informed and friendly, if not bordering on the ever-so-slightly too chatty at the checkout line (but I'm impatient, so I'm as much to blame), but they always give me some sample or other that fits with the purchases I'm making, so I really can't complain. I have not tried their salon services because I'm loyal to Rock Paper Scissors, but I also wouldn't imagine trying them here, if for no other reason then, um, it's a cosmetics store. read more

This is your typical Ulta store, but this one really impressed me. I was looking for a new foundation, because I can't ever seem to get the right one for my skin tone. I was walking back and forth across several isles and this sales lady asked if I needed some help. Well I had decided on one particular brand, because I've heard good things about it and asked her what color I should get. She took a look at my face and asked a few questions and told me that she wouldn't recommend the brand I had chosen. She brought me around to another brand and sampled it on my face and explained her reasoning (which all seemed very knowledgeable). I ended up getting her recommendation which was $19 cheaper than the one I had picked out. It means a lot when a sales person truly helps and doesn't just try to sell the most expensive item in the store. Make a customer happy and they'll return to spend more. The service at this Ulta is decent. I drive from Chapel Hill to get my beauty products here and I always have a 50/50 chance of the products I am looking for being there. I don't want to have to call every time I want to go there just so I can see if my products are there. On the bright side, there will be an Ulta opening up in Chapel Hill, next to Trader Joes. I am looking forward to this one and hoping they will change my mind on being an Ulta customer. read more

I went back again recently and the manager was helpful in going into the back to see if they had stock. I also like that they seemed (except for the one product) To be more stocked than usual in products lately. Prices are cheaper than the local discount stores and with a rewards card you can't beat it. I'm updating my review as the workers seem to have gotten friendlier, however, they still are not very familiar with the products. I still shop here because it is an in store ulta, but mostly do my shopping online because they are usually out of the product I need. The store however is pretty clean and well organized. I really wish the employees did know more about their products. When trying a new product I do go in store to try to get more information. I still wont give 5 stars because when I was there, there was a girl with magenta/burgundy hair who was asking customers if they had a card, when the lady said no, the cashier asked if the customer wanted to use hers. If you have an ulta card, you know all points from purchases go to the person whose card it is. The customer doesn't get any rewards, the cashier does, and I felt that to be majorly dishonest. Other than that I would recommend this place, it's really clean and well organized. I went to visit the benefit brows bar at this location and the brow technician waxed my skin so hard that it hurt like hell afterwards. I eventually developed a scab under my eyebrow. I called the location just to ask if there was anything that could be done and the manager had the nerve to say "that scab must of been there before the wax appointment". As if I just have so much free time that I wanted to call ulta and complain about my brow wax. Will never get my eyebrows done here again. read more

DO NOT SHOP AT THIS LOCATION. I have been an Ulta customer for years and my last few shopping experiences at the Renaissance center location on Fayetteville road in Durham, NC have been HORRIBLE. The employees I have encountered racially profile the non-white customers and have ZERO knowledge about the products. When I say ZERO I mean piss poor. When it happened once, I thought it was all in my head, but NO, this is ongoing. On 2/3/23 I was literally followed around the entire store within 20 minutes of me arriving by an employee who was a white woman with thin blonde hair in a ponytail. I watched her follow me from one side to the other, from one testing station to the next, from one aisle to the next. IT WAS RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!! Please note, I had a shopping basket like any other customer, I asked employees, EVEN HER, to locate products like any other customer, I'm browsing and testing products JUST LIKE ANY OTHER CUSTOMER but I was suspicious because of course I'm non-white. Other customers were LITERALLY trying to get her attention and were asking for help and she became agitated because she didn't want to take her eyes off me. I saw her whispering to another white employee, short woman, short jet black hair. I held my composure. Once I went to check out the employee/manager with short black hair tapped the cashier on the shoulder and switched out with her so she could check me out. For whatever reason her whole demeanor changed when she saw my membership account. I was FURIOUS with this entire experience. This isn't even half of what I've encountered there. Needless to say, I won't be returning. Ulta needs to improve their hiring and vetting. I'll update once I get a response back from the complaint. read more

Went to get a haircut from Jamika and it went really really well! I am not usually one to pay for my haircuts and very rarely go to get one, so this was kind of a big deal for me! I booked my appoitment about a week or two in advance on the Ulta website and I chose the Haircut and Style which is priced at $48. I paid an extra $10? (I can't remember exactly how much) for a hair treatment which followed my shampoo. Jamika was very attentive, asked me exactly what I wanted and was easy to talk to throughout the whole appointment! Although I won't get my haircut every 6-weeks as recommended, I will definitely come back to Jamika at Ulta when my hair starts to get crunchy again, maybe a little sooner! read more

My review is based on my Ulta Salon experience with Sarah. I went in, asking for balayage highlights. I came in with 3 pictures of what I wanted, and all three of them showed light blonde highlights but with a significant amount of natural hair color showing. After 5 hours in Sarah's chair, my hair had barely changed color. I was upset because the highlights she gave me were nowhere near as light as I had asked for. I called and complained and agreed to let Sarah fix my hair for free, rather than getting a refund. I wish I hadn't. I don't know what about highlights Sarah didn't understand because I left with completely blonde hair from about 4 inches from my scalp to the bottom. Instead of getting highlights, I got what looked like a 6-month old bad dye job. I expressed my concerns about not having enough natural color in my hair as Sarah was doing the "highlights", but instead of reducing the amount of hair she was bleaching, she just kept going and said I could come back and get lowlights put in at a later date. Sarah's understanding of balayage highlights is nothing like how most people understand it. She didn't put much variation in where the "highlights" started, so although they didn't start at my scalp (correct), they all started at about the same distance from my scalp (incorrect), making it look like a grown-out dye job. Further more, she dyed 90% of my hair below the line where she started the "highlights", so I don't think they conform to what most people would call highlights. Although Sarah did apologize for not listening to me and "getting carried away" when I went back the second time, she still didn't listen when I tried to get her to bleach less hair during her "fix". And although she offered for me to come back to get lowlights at a different date, I knew that would not be enough to fix the hair and I no longer trusted her to touch my hair. I am still working on trying to get my money back. I only agreed to give Sarah a second chance if I could first speak to the salon manager, but when I showed up I was told the salon manager wasn't there. I let her do the fix anyway and severely regret it. I've contacted corporate twice, but the store manager still hasn't gotten back to me within the timeframe they gave me. I had to go to a different salon to get my hair fixed. Instead of doing just the highlights I wanted originally, I had to get lowlights to restore lots of my natural color, highlights to vary the distance from my scalp from which the highlights start (the fundamental characteristic of balayage that Sarah did not understand) and 2 glazes to keep the lightness of the highlights but get rid of the yellow (Sarah told me the toner she was using could only get rid of brassiness by making it darker). read more

I love this store. Tons of products- both high end and low end, tons of testers, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. This location is always busy, but the staff always makes sure to ask if they can help you- sometimes to the point that it's annoying! There are always coupons to print off online (in addition to the ones that come to your inbox if you're a rewards member) so even though the prices on drugstore products might be a few dollars higher than at Target or Wal-Mart you definitely don't break the bank. Their sales are also decent enough- a lot of B2GO offers each week. They seem to get new products quickly after their releases. I can't comment on the salon services (honestly, I forget they offer these most of the time), but I will continue to visit often! read more

OMG! This company has some serious procedural issues if they don't have a way to return gift cards purchased at the local store with the receipts in hand. I was told by this store manager(uggh) that no way could I return them despite no signs posted saying all gift card buys are final! I was to directed to take my complaints to Guest Services who told me to go and buy item in the amount of the gift cards and return them. The next day I attempted to follow those directions but they would not put the refund back on the credit card but could only put it back on my gift cards completely defeating the purpose. Bottom line: Don't buy gift cards at this company. I have had two days fighting for my money. I feel like they have robbed me! Any store that doesn't put the customer first is doomed to fail. Just had the worst experience of my life!! I'm only giving it 2 stars because I had a $6 reward. Anywho, got to the check out line, and waited for about 4 minutes while one girl was busy with another customer. One of their makeup advisors was standing behind the counter, checking people out. She proceeded to laying with paper, with her back turned toward me. She saw me standing there before she turned around to fiddle with paper, and looked at me dead in the eyes after she finished with her last customer. Where is your customer service hat, ladies? Sadly disappointed in that type of behavior. Their MOD (manager on duty) was wearing SWEATS. Hair tied up in a messy bun. All the other girls, were in uniform, with makeup done. How am I supposed to trust you as my beauty expert when you looked like you just rolled out of bed?! The Chapel Hill location I find to be more helpful, and well stocked. This Ulta is amazing! The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about their products. Someone walked right up to me to ask if I needed help, and I just asked her a few questions about the new products, and she knew exactly what I was talking about and was extremely sweet! There wasn't a line at the checkout either, so that was awesome! I love that ulta has the high end brands as well as the cheaper options like NYX. An employee also told me that now if they don't have an item we want, they can order it in store and have it shipped to us! Very convenient! Everyone here complaining that no one greeted you, no one asked you if you needed help etc... stores (and their employees) get busy... get over it. If you need help, ask for it. No one is a mind reader. I have worked retail before and there's A LOT going on that you don't see, so they can't always cater to your every whim. I think the employees here are human beings so I don't expect them to be perfect. If I really need help, I'll ask, and they are always extremely nice when I do. I've never had a problem with anyone here, the entire staff has always been courteous and respectful I will definitely be back to this location! read more

I'm mainly writing this review because I had a great experience at the Benefit Brow Bar but I didn't see a separate page for that. I called for a brow wax and they were able to get an appointment within 20 minutes. My appointment was with Mandy who was GREAT! I'm someone VERY picky about my eyebrows because they are naturally thick and have had a lot of bad experiences with getting them done (burns, half the brow taken off, ect) so for several years I've just plucked them myself. But I just didn't have the time, motivation, or energy yesterday and took a risk. Mandy asked how I like them shaped, drew the outline out and explained it all to me (which helped me understand where I mess up when I do them myself) before doing any wax. It was not at all painful, and she only did a little bit of plucking to clean them up. I was VERY happy with the experience and will definitely be going back when it's time to get them done again :) Thanks, Mandy! I had such a good experience here; I came in and was trying to figure out what type of makeup I wanted to try. They have a huge selection! I'm no expert by any means so I was wandering a bit and gravitated to the Bare Minerals section since I have very sensitive skin, especially around my eyes so I am cautious when choosing any new mascara/eyeliner. Marissa was awesome, she explained which products she recommended and helped me choose a mascara, foundation, and all over face color in lieu of a blush since she asked about what type of look I was going for. It was such good customer service, she was clearly knowledgeable and made me want to try more products but was never pushy about it. I asked her questions from everything from eye shadow shades to contouring/highlighting tips and she was patient and sweet. I will absolutely be back read more

He also cut my hair and when I went to another hairdresser the next week to fix the color, she pointed out that he had snipped a chunk out of the back of my hair (underneath so I wouldn't notice) really short as revenge or something. Over it. I used to live close to a Sephora and loathe going to the mall, so since moving here I've tried this place a few times. Have not been impressed on any of my visits by the customer service, check out efficiency, stock levels of product...all less than adequate. The first time, I was looking for my usual foundation, and since they were out of it, the staff kept trying to upsell me to a different brand that was more expensive. Recently, I went back in with a coupon for $3.50 off a $10 purchase that had been in a mailer. Picked out $60 worth of stuff, and they told me that the coupon wouldn't apply to any of it, then proceeded to show me a long list of brands that was excluded from "ulta coupons." I was googling Ulta to find their hours and the rating on this Ulta caught my eye. Are y'all crazy? First, let me clarify that finding a store which sells BOTH high end and drugstore makeup is a GOOD THING. They are quite obviously targeting those who sometimes like to buy a better quality makeup but like to have the option to purchase a drug store product at a fraction of the cost, which probably works just as well. And there is ALWAYS a $3.50 off $10 coupon to be used in the drugstore section. Second, having shopped at all the makeup stores, specialized or generic like sephora, I can tell you that the help you receive is much more consistent at Ulta. There's always that one sour apple at the Mac counter that acts like its a travesty that they have to step down from their high horse to help you. You know the type. I know all the Ulta workers personally and even on my first few visits they were still just as attentive and helpful. They knew their products, and never tried SELLING me anything, rather just showed me my options. Which may or may not include a drugstore product if it doesn't fit my request! Yes, since it IS a mix of high end and drugstore it means they have a little bit of each. It's not Walgreen's, its not Sephora. They don't care every drugstore line and every high end line. But it has more than enough to choose from. It is always neat and clean, though sometimes popular products (I.e. Becca highlighters) go quickly but that gets fixed on the next shipment. Just ask and they will set it aside for you. Be smart, shop smart and you won't have anything to complain about. read more

They have the products I need most of the time. I went in the other day and they had buy one get one 50% stickers on almost everything that clearly indicated the product I was purchasing. When I showed my cashier, said said 'we can't honor that'. I was kind of annoyed because one mistaken sticker, ok. But 30??? I spoke with the manager and she honored it no problem. I had asked a girl to help me get a concealer out of the holder because they were all stuck and she had an attitude with me, as if I was in inconveniencing her! Management seemed decent but the workers seemed to be annoyed unless they were selling something. The girls in the higher end section seem more friendly and helpful. read more

First off, I'm a big fan of this Ulta location. The store is moderately clean (as clean as it can be with customers who tend to tear up the displays) and their shelves are kept well-stocked. These tend to be my top two complaints about Ulta stores, so points to them! The associates here are generally friendly and kind, even when the store is on the busy side. But during my most recent visit, I had a particularly good experience. I came in for a hair service with Sarah. I have very curly hair, I'd say a mix of 3b and 2c, and she is the first stylist I've had since moving here who I felt truly comfortable allowing near my hair with a pair of shears, much less experimenting on new styles with. She has been very kind, and my curls look really good! She always starts off by asking questions about what I am looking for and talking about how we can achieve that look. She is honest about what is possible, and she works with her clients to find a style that works for them and their hair. She is reasonably quick but never rushes, and she always lets me know if she is running behind. I don't plan to change seeing her anytime soon. As an added benefit, Ulta's pricing is super reasonable for a quality cut, especially since haircuts for curly hair can be extremely expensive elsewhere, and you don't have to put up with the look of terror from a stylist who has no idea how to safely detangle curls, much less cut them. Your curls are safe in Sarah's hands. I would also like to say that, during my time wandering around before my appointment, I spent a good amount of time in the makeup aisles. Usually I am a "drugstore makeup brand" kind of person. I don't have the money to waste on fancy products that may or may not work any better than their cheaper counterparts. However, this time I made my way over to the dreaded "expensive" half of the store in search of a particular makeup product that might work, with very low expectations of actually buying anything. A lovely employee, whose name I believe was Kenya, helped me find a quality product with a reasonable price that actually matched my undertones and met my needs. She absolutely did not make me feel pressured to buy anything that I didn't want or need and let me take a picture of some of the products she showed me so that when I had a little extra money in the future, I could come back and get them. As someone with minimal makeup experience, I felt very comfortable asking her questions and receiving recommendations, as well as walking away with just what I needed. I have tried out the product at home and am very satisfied with what I purchased. This was an all-around great experience! read more

The stylist did do a great job...but when she first told me that my apt should've been scheduled with a less experienced stylist (she is a master stylist?), I offered to reschedule w someone else (which she declined). But I paid for it later w her attitude. While I was happy w the results (she is great at her job), at one point, I should've just walked out. In the beginning, I asked for her opinion on my cut (as in "what do you think I should do?) and she said, hand on hip and exasperated, "I'm giving you what you want." It was so obvious that she barely tolerated me in her chair, even w our attempt at idle chit chat. This is not the first time this sort of rudeness has happened at this salon but, for me, it's the last time. I still love the store and their points program but I'm done w feeling that I should feel privileged that they are taking the time to give service. read more
