We went to Ultreia when they first opened and a friend had to leave early, as the ventilation was so poor that it triggered her asthma. I went 5 years later and it was the same. Good food, but I ate very very quickly. This morning when I went to put that shirt in my suitcase, it smelled like restaurant grease. Very few options for Spanish food in Denver, but I won't be back a third time. This should be fixable. Great opening day crowd. We sat upstairs. Tapas style is good anytime. These folks know their tapas. We ordered the following: Costillas de Cerdo., Camarones Encurtido, Chorizo Picante Y Manchego, Pan Con Tomate and Jamon Serano. They look pretty and they taste great! What got my attention more was the Costillas. It's tender fall off the bones. Comes in two pieces and perfect for sharing! Also I highly suggest the last dish. It's a simple freshly made bread four pieces and that tomato spread with olive oil and salt and add the ham was the best! Very memorable! The above dishes were the usual tapas style size. The Camarones is the second smallest and the Chorizo Manchego takes the price for the tiniest tapa! We ordered three dishes and when we're almost done we waited for the third which was the Chorizo Manchego. It was there all along and we already devoured it! :) There is a bar and location wise it's next to Snooze. Outside seating. Great staff. Good start! If you're on yelp and looking for something new to try, look no further!! We tried this place for the first time tonight and were completely blown away! I've had tapas before, but this place was better than anything else I've tried! I love that there are Portuguese and Spanish influences because it adds another depth to the foods. We got so many items but because they were so good we ate most before I could get pics! Pictured below are a amazing items first sangria which was very refreshing and not too sweet. The pan con tomato which had bread with the AMAZING olive oil/ tomato mix, and jamon and anchovies! My all time favorite and part of the reason I came was the pastel de nata!! A very small and delicious dessert that I've been left craving. The food was amazing, however the outdoor seating was great and the service was AMAZING. Ultreia was at the top of my list for a place to check out. It's inside Union Station and they validate so the valet costs $12. I was disappointed that they don't take reservations, so we arrived a little before 5:00 on a Friday to have a better chance to get a table. We were seated right away on the second floor which was a great location. It took at least an hour for all of the tables to fill and by the time we left, there was a wait. It was beautifully decorated. My friend described it as old world elegant. There are a lot of options on the menu, so we asked the waitress for recommendations and they were all good choices. The cauliflower was probably our favorite small plate. I asked for a glass of wine recommendation and the waitress suggested a glass that happened to be the least expensive. I appreciated that she didn't automatically go for the priciest. The only thing lacking was how long it took them to clear our dishes. Love the ambiance of this place! It is located at Denver Union Station, which gave it that European city vibe! Perfect because this place serves food inspired by Portuguese and Spanish dishes. It is a tapas style, so don't be alarmed when you see the small portions. Prices on the menu are decent, something I'd expect from places like this. Everything we ordered came out to be delicious! On a hot day I do recommend their ornage you glad it's not bitter cocktail (yes it's spelled ornage). Refreshing, and can be dangerous because it's like drinking a cold juice but mixed with gin. Such an amazing experience!! The food was unlike anything we've had before and a great vibe, especially sitting in the balcony. Six of us sampled a good majority of the menu. First El Otona cocktail is a must! Definitely try the octopus, fried artichokes, papas bravas, bacon wrapped dates, and even the pan con tomato, not sure what it was with the tomato but it was delicious! When the staff discovered it was our anniversary not only did they bring us a lovely dessert but also a bedazzled Happy Anniversary card signed by all the staff!! Ultreia served this foodie the best meal in Denver. I am from Spain and not easily impressed by Iberian food outside the continent. Ultreia serves authentic Spanish tapas, including acorn-fed jamón served on pan con tomate, huevos bravas, butifarra, ham croquettes, setas (mushrooms), and an assortment of Basque pintxos. As out of town visitors, we followed the recommendation of a New York Times article and we were pleased. Only real drawback was poor kitchen ventilation which spilled out to seating area. I do not know if that was an irregularity. Tapas were very good. Moroccan ribs were a big winner at our table. We also liked the perfectly crispy-surfaced ham croquettes and its delightful cheesy interior, and several at our table enjoyed the bacon wrapped dates. Shishito peppers were unfortunately nondescript. I loved the Portuguese custard tarts while others liked the chocolate torta which I found unfocused with its many ingredients. A dining companion was very impressed about the Botanica gin and tonic (didn't know you could rave about a G&T) and the red wine he selected. Environment is okay, smaller than I expected, not loud. Brought a cousin from out of town here in a whim and we were happy we did! We went for a snack on a Sunday afternoon, and it wasn't busy at all. We were completely new to this type of cuisine but everything was really good. It is tapas, so everything is portioned into shareable plates. This definitely adds up in the end, so if you're coming hungry with a group, you'll probably soend more than you would dining at a restaurant with typical entree/ courses style. But being a tapas restaurant, it feels more social being able to share all the plates! Our servers were great and helpful with all the questions we had about the menu. Was here for a conference about a month ago and came here for lunch before my coworkers and I returned home. Food here is very good. It's a fusion type place; they have tapas for the table, but there's also individual sandwiches on their menu meant for you to enjoy alone. We got the chicken liver, pan con tomate, shishito peppers, among other apps. I think their tapas outshines the individual sandwich. Came here for brunch. Razor clams: Ordered the razor clams expecting much more than what we got. Didn't expect the dish to be coming from an actual tin, and even if it is, didn't expect it to taste "fishy" (not fresh). Absolutely disappointed. Not worth $23 for a tin of non-fresh clams..... The potato chips on the side are pretty good but it didn't compensate for the disappointing razor clams. It may be a very authentic fish to the Portuguese but I would say that the consumers in the US may not be ready for it yet. Not something that we see in restaurants that often/ at all. How good this place is depends on what you order. I know because we ate here with a friend who is a proponent both of asking the waiter to choose your food for you and of eating like you're watching Netflix. We started with the platter and then once our bellies were bulging, we proceeded to sample a few other things on our own. It turned out that the dishes that the restaurant had chosen for the platter were significantly better than those that came of our own choosing. I learned a few things from this experience. First, it is probably true that any employee at the restaurant is better at selecting things from the menu than you will be. Second, binge eating has diminishing returns, but it does give you some credibility when reviewing a restaurant. For instance, I can tell you with confidence that the ribs are the best thing on the menu. I know this to be true because I have eaten most of the menu. read more

It was less sweet and more dry with a noticeably stronger pinot noir as their main vein in the recipe. And let me tell you, pinots are my favs. So they nailed it. We then ordered a few foods and tapas: Artichoke salad (zesty, tangy with an unexpected creaminess) Pan con tomate (like a bruschetta with Spanish flare) Trout ceviche (it was their special that night--my favorite thing I've eaten in about a month) Setas (this roasted mushroom deal--please note: I HAYYTE mushrooms and I got this because I always try mushrooms once to year to be sure I hate them--and I didn't hate this) And finally, the patatas bravas a crispy potato plate that always reminds us how delicious potatoes truly can be. Everything came with what I like to call doll-sized crispies. Or rather, the little crackers that are the perfect shelves to shovel the food into the face. This bar is the most clutch spot in LoDo. It features a fantastic bar space with great musical vibes, at just the right volume. Came here last night with my fiancé, we sat at the bar while we waited for our table. We've traveled to Spain and have had croquetas and pan con tomate from a lot of different places and we both agree that these were definitely top. The type of bread they use is sooo good and then the crunchy top, delicious! The food was delicious and the service was great. The only reason I'm giving it 4/5 is because I wish the food was warmer. When we got the bread for the pan con tomate (which was amazing) it was cold. We also had the jamon croquetas, stuffed olives, and the ribs. The flavor was definitely there, but the ribs weren't served as hot as we would've liked either. Overall, I would definitely come back, but just ask them to make sure it comes warm. read more

If you're gonna serve tapas, stick to the classics and make it with phenomenal ingredients, don't just completely change the entire dish. The vegetable croquettas and escabeche were awful and under-seasoned and for $25 way over priced. The patatas bravas were also really under-seasoned. While in Denver for a business trip, I hosted a large dinner event at Ultreia. We picked Ultreia since it was located within Union Station which is where the meeting attendees were staying and they had a large enough semi-private dining space to accommodate comfortably a party of 16 (many other venues did not have private/semi private space for a group up to 20). The restaurant itself is not very big and is two levels, with the semi-private space taking up the entire upstairs loft like area. The event planner was very helpful; they were able to print out menus with our logos and also printed seating cards and set them at the table ahead of time. The dinner menu was fixed and there weren't too many options, however, we did opt to add some of the regular menu items as add-ons for the tapas course and as family style sides during the main/second course. The food was decent and the service was very good. Some of the hits and misses from the menu: Hits: Tapas - croquettas; stuffed dates (add-on); Sopa de ajo (first course; interesting); patatas bravos (add on); gin cocktails - the La Rosa was delicious. Misses: rib eye steak - the steak was very fatty. Churros were so-so. The only other negative thing I can pinpoint to was that we all smelt like fried food when we left. I had to immediately shower and wash my hair and dry clean my clothes since the smell was very strong. Overall though, the party enjoyed the dinner event and we had plenty of space and we were comfortable upstairs. read more

This place has it all. Food is spectacular, the service is excellent, great atmosphere and part of Union Station so you can get there by light rail. It's a Tapas restaurant but also has full size meals. I had a cod dish that was heavenly. I wish they had a cooking class to learn how to make their dishes. What sealed the deal was I made a reservation on their website (I think they use Opentable) and told them it was our anniversary and they took special care of us and brought out a dessert after. The concept is outstanding, the face is gorgeous, and the drink options are delightful. Excellent wine list, excellent set of cocktails. The service was quite good as well. And the food was good, above average, but this is not the main thrust of this review. The problem had to do primarily with ventilation and the overwhelming scent of fried food emanating from the kitchen. Per discussion with the server, this is typical. The scent was so distinct and continuous that it became distracting. After leaving, both of us had to wash our hair and clothing promptly as the scent trailed after us for quite some time. Unless this was indeed a single unfortunate ventilatory incident, I cannot envision returning. It was just so distracting. The need to shower simply because of the aroma produced by the kitchen is an imposition not worth the experience. Looking for a good quality unique restaurant while we were in town for vacation. Happened to see this place on a lot of recommendation list online and decided to give it a try! The interior was beautiful however we opted to be seated outside since the weather was beautiful that day. The server was prompt and very helpful with providing us recommendations. We got the croquetas de jamon, pan con tomate with jamon serrano and manchego cheese, and spiced octopus with egg. The food was bursting with unique and electic flavors! It was so delicious! We've been wanting to try Portuguese food ever since our son told us about the food from his trip to Portugal (and we watched a Somebody Feed Phil episode based there) and Ultreia gave us that opportunity and it did not disappoint. Our favorite items were the bacon wrapped dates, the ribs, and the Pan de Tomate. But, the ultimate (and the main thing we wanted to try) was the Pastel de Nata! It is a pastry invented by some monks who had too many left over egg yolks ( they used the egg whites to starch their habits) and we all loved it.
