While staying at the Thompson Denver, we found ourselves deciding it was more convenient to have our breakfast here during our entire stay. Our overall experience was exemplary! Although our final day had a bit of wait time for seating (on a Monday), the food and service was amazing. We had all eaten here during our last stay a few years ago but there was a lot under construction outside. I observed the outdoor seating is available. Inside, everything meshed well with the overall hotel. The food itself - the family pretty much ate almost every breakfast item during our stay. Specific to my experiences with the food: Croque Madame - 4.5/5 - all the ingredients were fresh and complimented each other. Chez Maggy Benedict - 5/5 - Absolutely loved it! The food was good, nothing to write home about, the service was great and the restaurant is super cute, but I will say I was disappointed to see that some menu items have changed. For instance, the steak frites was not available to order for dinner but available for lunch and the weekend brunch. Also, they took the pancakes off the brunch menu which to me is criminal -- but they have it available for weekday breakfasts. I don't know, to me these seemed like unnecessary changes, and as somebody who booked this hotel specifically to enjoy these menu items at this restaurant, I just felt disappointed. Chez Maggy is fancy French restaurant using local Colorado ingredients inside the Thompson hotel. The dimly lit interior has high ceilings with understated upscale decor. The escargot were very large and served in their shells for a beautiful presentation and come with their own mini baguette to soak up the butter sauce. If you like snails, then I would recommend ordering them here. I also enjoyed the mussels in white wine sauce with its light clean flavor. The French onion soup was very cheesy and deeply flavored as you would expect from this classic. The fried calamari were lightly battered and not too greasy but not particularly special compared to the other appetizers I had. I ordered the filet aux Poivre and swapped the fries for potato pave. I think my med-rare fillet was mixed up with someone else's because it was overdone. To their credit, they did comp it and bring me a perfectly cooked one later but I felt like it was lacking salt. I would've liked to order the lamb chops, but they were not available the night. I was there. Service was impeccable! The server did a great job keeping our table of 14 happy. Beautiful space that's shared with a hotel. The restaurant was booked for a reservation so the bar seating was available. During the day, they have happy hour and I tried the beef tartare and escargot as I was doing a food tour and wanted something light. The escargot came with a whole baguette and the tartare had two bread slices. It was so heavy and not a "light" dish. I ended up being so full. The bathroom is located downstairs and has an event space with picturesque seating, the bathroom has toiletries to freshen up and the meal came with a postcard at the end. I'm always on the search for the best French Onion soup. This place has been recommended on numerous social media outlets, so I decided to give it a try. As part of the Thompson Hotel, I had high hopes for delicious soup, but unfortunately it was pretty mid. The broth didn't have much depth and was lacking bold flavors. The portion size was fine and filling. I also ordered a Boston lettuce salad, which was returned b/c 50% of the lettuce was wilted and turned. Not sure how it even left the kitchen looking the way it did, but I guess most of the wilted lettuce was hidden under the top layer of lettuce. We also ordered the crab toast. I didn't love it b/c it was very bready and very much not crabby, but my counterpart really enjoyed it. I ordered the Cordon Bleu, but for some reason the waitress put in the order for some fish dish. This is usually not a big deal, but the wrong order meant that it took a while for our food to arrive and we had to frantically scarf down our food in hopes that we weren't going to be late for the show. The manager did come over to apologize for the mix-up and assured us our food was on its way, but the damage was done. For the record, the Cordon Bleu was a decadent treat and I wish I had more time to enjoy it. My husband thought the Maggy burger was delicious, though he's never met a burger he didn't like. Prior to our entrees, we ordered the Belgian endive salad and the beef tartare. I highly recommend both to share with your dinner companion. Update: food is still bomb! Came with a different group of friends, we ordered the calamari, hamachi crudo, beet salad, filet, and lemon bucatini. Yummmmmmmm. It was all so delicious. The calamari was crispy (I wish there were bigger chunks of squid), the hamachi crudo came with a lovely slaw, and the beet salad was perfection. I loved the pistachio and cheese in the beet salad. The flavors were spot on. The filet was perfectly cooked (medium rare, DUH) and the lemon bucatini was very flavorful. The server also brought us a yummy aioli for the fries that I very much enjoyed. We came here for Easter brunch - so it wasn't a typical meal. We ordered the steak aux poivre which was delicious and it came with crunchy fries. The only downside is that this restaurant charges a 20% service fee which they tell you doesn't include tip. So once you add a 20% tip - you've spent a 40% up charge which isn't advertised on their website at all. I post this just so anyone who considered this restaurant for a future visit will know that they have to pay 40%. That's high. read more

It was light and refreshing perfect over ice. The ceasar salad was very crisp and fresh and not over dressed which happened with a salad sometimes this one was perfect to me. Ryan and I both devoured it all and were both quite pleased the entire meal. Although the portions may seem a little small this filled up Ryan and I well and the quality like this always makes up for quantity of food for price. I'll take that any day over a large amount of mediocre food. I can't wait to come back again soon! And of course can't go wrong with the convenient location for Ryan and I just right in down town Denver 1616 market street! The food is very good for a hotel restaurant, but it's also heavier than the Metallica concert I went to that night! I had the burger which was really awesome - and the fries were the best fries I've had in a while. Steak frites were pretty good - can't complain but can't write home about it. Creme Brule was also just okay. Breakfast was pretty good also. It's a bit on the pricey side (not terrible, some things are like oh yeah, that's reasonable, others seem to be not a good value). Service was pretty friendly. Overall, it's a 4 (3.5) star joint but I deduct a star due to the 20% auto grat added and then getting the sales pitch afterwards about why they should get additional tip. If you're going to auto grat me 20% and point it out to me, that's cool - if you're going to use it to ask more. Not so much. I don't need an HBS case study into the business model of the restaurant... As i said, some of the food is pretty good so I would eat it again. I had been wanting to check out Chez Maggy for a while. I finally had the opportunity. We ordered the crab toast which came out as a large square form of crab with a crispy outer layer. It was not what we expected but was delicious. I ordered the striped bass as my main dish. It was flavorful and the potatoes were so fine they were a little crispy which added a nice crunch to a dish that had a lot of softer elements with the bass. I had the steak frites and a Caesar salad and both were phenomenal. The steak was incredibly tender and not chewy at all, and the fries were perfect, pillowy on the inside with a great crunch on the outside. The salad was fresh and crisp, and the dressing was rich and flavorful without being overpowering. The French onion soup is by far the BEST I've ever had, made with a veal broth, it's rich, delicious and just made to perfection. I loved the bolognese, chef's mother in laws recipe. Chez Maggy's New Year's Eve prix fixe was an absolute disaster--aggressively bad food paired with service that felt deliberately negligent. The "service" started with us sitting ignored for 10 minutes at a table so unstable we had to ask twice for it to be fixed. Throughout the meal, we were essentially abandoned. After dessert, we waited another 15 minutes just for the privilege of paying for this disaster. But the food was the real insult. My friend and I ordered across the menu, giving us a comprehensive sampling of their incompetence. Every single dish failed: over salted to the point of inedibility, overcooked beyond recognition, or utterly flavorless. The shrimp and dirty rice were so salty the shrimp had the texture of stale popcorn. The lobster bisque tasted like melted cough drops. The beurre blanc was so vile we couldn't force ourselves to eat it. When we raised our concerns, a staffer promised to comp a glass of wine. He didn't. We only caught the lie after we'd left and checked our receipt. I'm baffled by the positive reviews this place has. Perhaps the regular menu is better, but we'll never know--I'd genuinely rather eat gas station sushi than give them another dime. read more

What made the soup so unique was using veal bone broth and pepper. It was incredible, including the massive layer of cheese. The French fries were cooked in clarified butter. Super tasty and crunchy. For breakfast, I had to order the Denver Omelette when in Denver. What stood out was the amazing creaminess of the eggs. A must-order. The garlic aioli I would drink so there is that. Also the fries had a best level of salt. The chilaquiles with hash browns again great flavor but you got one egg with one hash brown. Breakfast-only review: So sad to report that they took the French Denver omelet off the menu - surprising given that's the one dish the restaurant's PR reps centered for promo in news coverage when Chez Maggy first opened. It was their whole news hook. We've been 5-6 times just for that perfectly made French omelet but it was replaced with a regular ($23) Denver omelet.
