Alisia is my hair goddess!!! She is THE BEST! I fly from California to Salt Lake just to get my hair cut and colored by her. She also has done my Balrazilian Blowouts for the last few years and I'm obsessed. I trust NO ONE with my locks except for her. Both my dad and I have been going to her for years. She is able to get through my super thick hair and turn it from drab into FAB every single damn time! She doesn't mess around when I come in with split-ends or color that needs correcting. She is honest about where I need to cut my hair to get it back to it's health and listens to my requests if I ever want layers, or want to change up the shape up. We've done it all with my hair! Simple cut. A basic color. Fun funky colors. She has such a good eye for what colors will go well with your skin I trust her completely when I come in. As a birthday gift to myself, I decided to finally color in my virgin dark brown hair. I completed the process about 3 months ago in another state before moving to Utah. After much time and money spent, I was very happy with the results. Unfortunately, I took a risk and went to a salon in Sandy to have my roots done. To say the least, all the time and money spent to get my hair to the right color went down the drain. I left that salon in Sandy with orange roots, a chemically burned scalp, and melted damaged hair .. all after 7 HOURS! It was one of those experiences you just can't make up, that's how awful it was. It was a hard lesson learned. Fortunately, my wonderful hairdresser from back home did her research and recommended that I go to Ulysses right away for a color correction. I was incredibly lucky to have Makenzie Fukuda help me with this ordeal. Bless her heart, Makenzie bravely took on my challenging situation, was very sympathetic and did not hesitate to do everything she could to help me. She explained everything to me during the process of color correcting & conditioning and provided excellent advice and tips for hair care. Makenzie worked her magic and was able to correct the orange color to a dark natural brown. During that first appointment with Makenzie I wasn't quite ready to let go of my hair length even though I knew it was severely damaged from the salon in Sandy. It had taken me several years to grow it out long. However, a few weeks later, I visited Ulysess again for a conditioning treatment and I decided to just go for it and chop off my hair. I felt completely confident in Makenzie's hands and actually felt huge relief as she cut away my long locks. Luckily, this story has a happy ending thanks to Makenzie! I LOVE MY NEW HAIR!! I never thought I'd get so much happiness from a hair cut and color, but I honestly smile every time I look in an mirror or run my fingers through my hair. The cut is perfect and fits me so well. It's really difficult finding someone you trust with your hair. It's even more difficult when you try to stray away from them in order to save money. But the fact of the matter is, if you truly care about your hair, you make sure to put it in good hands. The hands I am talking about belong to Andrew Valtal. I used to go to him back when he was at Lunatic Fringe, but then he opened up Ulysses, a beautiful space full of amazing people. Each stylist individually sets up their appointments and they use the space whenever needed, which is a pretty awesome concept, considering that allows for more flexibility for both the client and the stylist. Anyways, apart from the actual salon itself, let's talk about Andrew. His hands are magic. I believe once won City Weekly's award for the "Best Head Massage" and he completely deserves that title. Not to mention, he gives great suggestions while respecting what you want, and you'll always end up with a great cut. I just moved here from the very humid Louisiana. I found Ulysses here on Yelp...saw the great reviews about Ulysses and it's hip chic vibe and many wonderful things about Jared Gomez. So, I was pleased to find that he, himself, called back asap, giving me his personal line for texting (which he prefers....and so do I!). Pure luck!! He was so accommodating and even came in ON HIS DAY OFF just to do MY hair, so I wouldn't have to wait another week to vamp up my dreary sad locks. He truly loves what he does and is a true artist. I loved watching him take my hair and treat it like an art piece that I would be proud to show off. I might be cheesy, but the way he used those scissors is a true, talent and is so fun to watch! Finding a stylist you can truly trust with your hair is hard to find, especially in a brand new city where you don't know anyone and thus have no word of mouth referrals or other good references. He puts you totally at ease with great conversation and the vintage, artistic, chic, naturally lit loft style space is just so calm , clean, and relaxing...my exact taste. I went in going for a complete new look...going much lighter/blonder than my many shades of red & black thing I've been doing since I was about 14...because I was convinced I'm better with dark dark or fiery red hair. I went in and wanted to let him have creative freedom, as I am completely okay with letting the ARTIST find what would best work for me. I just trusted him immediately to give my hair what it DESPERATELY needed, and that's rare to find on a first time visit. He paid attention to so many details about my features, and talked me through everything he was doing to my hair and instructed me how I could repeat what he was doing so I could get the most impact out of styling my hair on my own. I can't wait to see him in 8-12 weeks to see what he will do next!! I have been going to Andrew Valtal for close to 8 years. He is the owner of the award winning eco-friendly hair salon Ulysses, nestled in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, UT. He and his entire staff are all so nice and welcoming the minute you walk in. The salon itself is quite beautiful and I really love that the design is not like a typical business you see in Salt Lake - but more like a stunning New York loft. A few months after I wrote my first review of Ulysses I made an appointment with Ms. Ashlyn Buchi for a huge hair makeover. That woman is ridiculously talented at what she does! I went in with a completely awful color job I had done a week earlier and to make her work even harder, I wanted an extreme melt AND extensions. She spent a whopping 8hrs with me making sure everything with my hair was perfect! The color, the cut, the extensions, the blending, all of it. She didn't cut any corners and she paid an extreme amount of attention to even the smallest details. I left absolutely loving my hair and feeling a million times better. When someone ruins your hair you feel like you lose part of your identity. Ashlyn not only fixed it but completely made it over beautifully. I wish so badly I still lived in SLC. If I could, I would wait to get my hair done until I make my trips home. Yes, she's that good and yes, Ulysses has the best owner and staff ever. read more

Jared Gomez has been doing my hair for years. I am not a picky hair client, but I am also not a very directive client and half of the time I don't even really know what I want. Jared is very instinctual with his skills and really feels out the person for whom he is cutting their hair. I have gotten pretty A-line bobs and I have gotten extreme asymmetrical mullets, his range is wide. I know he does extensions, although I have personally never gotten any. I went blonde for about 4 months and he was amazing at doing my color. I have very dark brown hair and it is hard to get it blonde. Jared got my hair platinum. The salon look itself i love. It is kind of warehousey, large open space with high ceilings and reclaimed furniture. There is off street parking behind the building. read more

She is always willing to accommodate my constant need for change whether it be color or cut and always guides me in the right direction. Ulysses is the best place to be for a modern, eclectic feel in a salon. The atmosphere is amazing. I literally could sleep and live here if I could. Its got super high ceilings, wooden floors with character, a modern flair for decor and yet you get a taste of the old school with the furnishings. The staff at Ulysses are incredibly nice. Any time I've ever been there it just feels so welcoming and cozy. Erin does my hair fantastically any time I need a change. Or a normal style on the flip side. Unfortunately, she's no longer at the salon. But the other stylists are just as amazing. The salon is also Eco-friendly. I'd say the only drawback to the salon is the parking. There's street parking, but it isn't free until after 6 and is almost always packed. There's an alley way that takes you to a back lot but it's hit or miss as to whether someone will be coming out as you're heading in. The lot is pretty small too. I would say it's only worth going if it's after rush hour in downtown slc. The entrance is located at the door marked Ulysses in the alley way, facing north. Walk in and then up the stairs and through the door on the left. I know I was confused when I first went on how to get in! read more

I initially was going to write a pretty positive review until this morning while I was taking a shower. I was washing my hair and assessed more of my haircut and I wanted to scream...literally! I wanted a LONG bob with my hair thinned out but not with blunt layers. What did I get? A short bob with drastic layers. I have low tolerance for my hair screw ups and right now my blood is boiling. Because I used it with a groupon, I don't plan on calling them and complaining. I know the stylist did her best and I really liked her as a person. She was super sweet, but this is nothing personal - just business. As a haircut in general - it's not bad. Also, she was super nice about me not tipping her because I only brought my American Express and had no cash (I plan to tip her when I'm in the area). Also, it's better if you contact them via facebook then trying to leave a message if you don't know which stylist to choose. I have called them numerous times and eventually had to resort to facebook (which i hate to do) in order to reach u.lys.ses. I got a response right away and was able to contact someone with a swift response via text. A plus about this salon is that they open on Sunday, which was sort of the only time I could go and get a haircut. BUT there were few downfalls, especially if you are short-stature and in need of a elevator. 1. There is a long flight of stairs. 2. They do not have sinks that lower or have booster seats (we had to improvise with phone books). The mirrors are small, so if you aren't a certain height, don't expect for you to be able to see your face. The ambiance of the place was very contemporary industrial sort of look and I wasn't sure if I liked the smell of breakfast food when I went in. Will I go there again? To be honest, I don't know. I've had my fair share of hair disasters. The stylists say "i've never seen hair this thick before," or "I'm not really familiar how to cut curly hair." I walk out looking like I'm wearing a helmet, or like I'm legally changing my name to Mufasa (and dressing the part.) But that all ended one day when miss Ashlyn Buchi started doing my hair. She tackled this lion's mane like she'd been doing it her entire life. In addition to the amazing Ashlyn, I've watched the other stylists make a work of art on their client's head, and I've never walked in without being greeted by smiling faces. Ulysses is all around the place to be-from the modern outside door, up the stairs decorated with vintage items, and right into the shop-it keeps your eyes busy and your mouth smiling, but doesn't miss a beat in the comfortable ambience, either. It has a nice, hip, urban feel and the entire staff is fashionable, which I think is important to help convey that they're not only familiar with the styles that are popular for hair currently, but also in the fashion and design worlds. I've been nothing short of impressed every time I go to Ulysses, and something else that is really appealing to me is that they feature a new local artist every month or so. It's really interesting to constantly have the art work in the salon changing, and spot-lighting local talent. I would highly recommend anyone who is bored with their hair style/stylist, new to the Salt Lake valley, looking for friendly and fashionable experts, and/or open to a change for the better, go and try out this one of a kind place. I thought I'd never find a salon or a stylist to be loyal to, but Ashlyn and Ulysses have converted me. It is always time and money well spent. But don't go unless you're willing to be bombarded with compliments and questions about your hair, because it will happen ALL the time. Ulysses is a fantastic salon. This is due in part to Andrew (the owner), who has been my stylist for over six years and would continue to be if it weren't for my relocation last month. I have gone from long to short, no bangs to bangs, red to black to brown, and I've always left pleased. Andrew has always been very respectful of my personal style yet still offers thoughtful suggestions when I ask. And of course, the salon - it is so hip! But not in an in-your-face kind of way; the environment is comfortable, with awesome music, tons of magazines (from the NY Times to Star), an almost filled event calendar, and of course the stylists - which really do make the salon what it is (awesome!) I had such a great experience at Ulysses today with Makenzie _beautybykenz . She did a balayage and cut for me. I told her what I was wanting and we talked about what would be the best way to achieve it. After our mini consultation she re-stated what I wanted and how she was going to do that before she started. This was really great to make sure we were both on the same page. My color came out exactly how I had it pictured in my head and she cleaned up my hair cut as I'm wanting to grow it out a little bit but still wanted it healthy. I loved how well she listened! The salon is seriously cool and stylish too. Really cute salon! I recently went here and loved everything about it. It's hard to find, but once you do it's not a big deal. It's so cute on the inside and so cozy cute. You HAVE to try Kenzie! She's AMAZING!! She did WONDERS to my hair- cut- color- highlight the whole "sha-bang". I needed to save my hair and went to her on a referral from my boyfriend's barber. As a brand new client literally asking, and trusting her to work magic,I was nervous and hoping she would understand what I needed. She not only took into consideration that I was trusting her, but she did it. She saved my hair that was dried out, and made it look brand new. After searching high and low, reading every review about the salon and giving it some thought- I decided to call Andrew (the owner) and schedule an appointment for a cut and consultation on color. Andrew was prompt in responding to my voicemail and was able to schedule me the same week. Not knowing what product line they used or what school of theory Andrew was based in was a bit unnerving for me but I felt confident in his abilities given his customer satisfaction record. I came up the stairs to the loft salon and immediately noticed they are a Kevin Murphy salon (leading in the nation Top 5) instantly I was calmed. Andrew came around the corner and greeted me- genuinely. He consulted with me about my wants and challenges I've had with styling. I felt comfortable sharing with him that I struggle with trichotillomania (hair pulling) and he assured me that he could work with what I have going on. So we talked for roughly 15 minutes about what I wanted to do and what would be best given my profession and hair issues. We agreed on a cut and a future color. He showed me a product I can use that will help hide my gray hairs in general - but it can also help with In between color processes. He gave a great scalp massage and got to know me better. He asked if I was ok with him cutting my hair dry- which I was and he went straight to cleaning up my cut. My hair feels great- I know that sounds odd but the way it lays is super important to me and I couldn't have hoped for a better experience- especially as a first time client in a new city. I highly recommend Andrew- and mind you I studied at a Vidal Sassoon school so my expectations are high. He's reasonably priced given he's the owner and they're on SLC. I ended up buying the recommended products and some session spray- now I'm waiting for my color appt next week. Can't wait for that!! Definitely give his salon a chance- you won't be disappointed. If you want healthy, shiny, white-blonde silver goddess perfect hair Ashlyn Buchi is your girl! I was getting my hair done at another unnamed salt lake salon and needless to say $300 later I came out with whorish blue hair (I did not ask for). I came to Ashlyn after finding her on Instagram and I am literally singing her praises to everyone I know! This girl knows what the hell she is doing, she has so much natural talent and it doesn't hurt that she has white blonde silvery hair herself, so she knows how painstaking getting that light can be! She is so quick moving and yet makes sure you don't leave the salon until not only are you beyond satisfied but she is as well. I recently relocated to California and postponed getting my hair done until I came back up to Utah. She is worth any length of travel, I promise you! It also doesn't hurt that she is so down to earth, hilarious, and makes you feel as though you were long lost bffs from preschool. The space is incredible and refreshing for Salt Lake. ...Jared has been cutting my hair since he was in hair school (where I first met him). I've followed him to different locations over the years until (and after) I left SLC. Luckily he moved to NYC for awhile and I was able to have him cut my hair while he was there. I've been in SF and now back to Brooklyn and whenever I'm in SLC visiting family, I always make sure to get in an appointment with Jared. Based on his other clients I've either followed or preceded its obvious he has a great repertoire with people and folks are really thrilled with his work.
