First time here. Wasn't too busy at all and had a large variety of items to pick from. Really enjoyed all the items and would be back, if in the area.

Recent visit and all was well except I missed out again on the Ilocos empanadas! The chicken tamale could have used some seasoning but everything else was great.

Wonderful bakery! So many options, plenty of parking as it's located in a strip mall. Very clean and organized inside, employees are very friendly. I appreciated the ingredients listed with the name of each item as this was my first time here.

Umaga Bakehouse is located in a shopping plaza, with other Filipino businesses nearby. There was a large variety in this store, some items were not typical of what I've seen near me. Merienda/Snacks, desserts, sweet, savory items; by the piece or shareable. If I lived in the area, would be able to sample them little by little but we were just visiting (mid 8/2025). Since I don't know pricing in Chicago, I would say similar to NYC prices. As far as the food, some we liked, others were just ok. For the pies, we got the buko pie slice first- the coconut slivers were hard and it was dry so skipped getting the whole pie. Instead, we got the whole egg pie which was a winner. Pichi pichi and puto bumbong looked appetizing but they were not soft when eaten right away. Need to be heated up. Halo halo had a lot of beans and a caramelized crumble topping. Was good but not what I prefer in terms of ingredients. Good snack buns like the corned beef bun (multi-pack, $5) and longganisa bun ($4 each). Special ensaymadas were $5.49. Salted egg one had a custardy filling and was pretty good. I got a taste of one of their tres leches but was too sweet for me. Added points for the ambiance - the warm tones and food displays are inviting; just a few tables inside though but we had to sit and taste some of the goodies already. And for service which was very friendly.

*5 stars with an asterisk. Had the cheesy bread today, a copy of Porto's from San Diego and if you know - you know! Let me tell you it's great! The sugar sprinkles make it sweet and the cheese melts in your mouth. We had it literally off the oven. Almost burnt our tongue. Also off the oven was the pork empanadas. The filling was generous and tasty. Empanadas for me however is a flaky pastry crust. This one is not. It's basically bread. Now I know that other bakers do that. I'm just telling you that seared in my mind as a child is that empanadas has a thin layered crispy crust around it. Thus the * on the five stars. Umaga has a lot of superlatives to offer - they all can't be out of the ball park. Kissel please don't hate me.

I enjoyed checking out what Umaga had to offer on my first visit recently and lounge the variety of pastries they had. I came across many Filipino pastries and sweet and savory treats that I was not familiar with before. I tried three different pastries that had Coconut, Corn, and Ube centric with other ingredients in the mix. They were super scrumptious. I liked them all. I'll be going back here. Check them out.

Incredible selection of Filipino baked goods and desserts at a reasonable price. They had so much to pick from but I got the Ube pandasal with cheese and another Ube bread and they were both so soft and delicious. I'd skip the Ube matcha though bc the matcha was pretty watered down but overall a great experience here.

The bakery is fully stock with their goodies. It gets busy but the line moves pretty quick at check out. And customer service is great.

Oh my Jollibee!!! I just arrived here two days ago from Miami. It's -6° and I had to try this Filipino bakery out. The 30 minute ride totally totally worth it. Every single item that I picked up here was amazing. I'm actually coming back again tomorrow morning to get those rice dough empanadas. This place definitely gets a "ah hell yeah!"

Their Señorita breads are the freshest and best--baked to order and available on a first-come, first-served basis. It's a little a bit of wait but definitely worth it.

Conveniently located in a plaza with free parking. Plenty of prepared food options to choose from. We mostly picked up bundles of prepared pastries but next time we are going for all the food behind the counter--beautiful delicious looking pastries Majority of prepackaged pastries we enjoyed and there were so many options to choose from. The best was the ube tres leches--worth every penny. Very very clean location too!

When I visited San Francisco, I visited a Filipino bakery and was obsessed with their sweet rolls they called "star bread." I knew I would be able to find something similar at home given Chicago is such a foodie city -it didn't take me long to find Umaga bakery on Yelp. Now I'm from the south side of the city, so you know I was committed to driving to the opposite end of the city for these sweet rolls. The drive did not disappoint. The store is very neatly kept together and I love the bright orange colors, makes everything look vibrant. They make the seniorita bread made to order, but it's so worth the wait for those buttery and sweet rolls. You can smell the bread as soon as you walk into the store :-) I look forward to the occasional drive to the north side to try their other pastries l.

I'm sure their bake goods are way better than their drinks review. My friends and I stopped by to try out their ube horchata and ube cold brew. It was such a disappointment. The cold brew just tastes like regular bitter cold brew with no sweetness from the ube. The horchata tasted decent but definitely can't taste any ube. I wouldn't waste your money on these drinks.

We got two cupcakes to share -- the purple velvet and the main squeeze. The purple velvet is ube butter cake, ube mousse, and ube cake crumbs. The ube flavor is both sweet and nutty and the mousse topping was light and delicious. The main squeeze is lemon cake filled with lemon curd, cream cheese frosting, and a buttercream lemon on top. Both were incredible, but my favorite was the lemon! I loved that the lemon flavor was light, and the cream cheese frosting balanced it out really nicely. The space is so cute inside! It's also a lot larger than I was expecting. We grabbed a seat at one of the tables inside to enjoy our treats. I will definitely be back with my toddler for a cupcake date soon!

I actually don't like truffle or croissant but this was flaky, and the rock sugar (I think that's what it is?) on top is so addicting. the cream truffle filling was flavorful but not overpowering -- longanisa egg sandwich + hashbrown: 7/10 just wasn't a standout for me -- mushroom adobo: 8/10 it was flavorful - I would order again but not sure it's worth almost $20 for drinks, we both got the hot yam but my boyfriend got it iced and I got it hot -- it tasted better iced but it was still lacking in ube flavor. the coffee also didn't taste strong enough for me personally honestly I really wanted to like this place more but for almost $100 for everything and the long wait, I expected at least half of the items to be perfect but I felt like only the truffle croissant felt like a 10/10 for me I will say the staff was very sweet though -- maybe it's a better experience dining in, so I think next time I will wake up early to eat inside and hopefully be able to give a higher rating :-)

I was skeptical at first because it is a local chain, rather than a singular location. However, it lived up to the hype. Service: it was extremely busy when we came in. The line was almost out the door. They have a system in place for ordering and seating so it worked well and fast given how busy they were. We didn't have any questions on where to order or where to stand when waiting for a seat. The staff were friendly and helped us find a spot to sit at. Ambiance: classic cafe in a city. Loud chatter, but it's a vibe. Very colorful and fun interior with cool textural elements. We had a seat that was facing the street so it was fun to people watch as we sipped and ate. Food: amazing breakfast selection! We ordered the morning sandwich and barbacoa bowl. The morning sandwich had THICK scrambled eggs which were super soft and tasty. I could've used more salsa verde on it. The bread was barely toasted. I'd rate the sandwich a 3.8/5. It got the job done. The barbacoa bowl was "really good" according to my fiancé. A great source of protein, fresh ingredients, nice flavor, and great portions. He would rate it a 5/5. Coffee: I am a coffee snob so I am quite harsh when it comes to reviewing it. Their machine is a cute La Marzocco. Appropriate sized "for-here" glasses according to the drinks. Plus, they were really cute. Wide variety of drink selection from your standards to the more girly-drinks (if there is such a thing). We ordered a cappuccino and small hot mocha. Latte art 4.5/5, temperature 5/5, flavor 4/5. The espresso didn't stand out to me, very standard flavor profile. However, the chocolate in the mocha was delicious. It's more of a rich, dark chocolate. Nice thin layer of foam. Would recommend to try at least once when you're in Chicago! Glad to have stopped in.

We visited around noon on a Sunday, and after reading the reviews here, I wasn't optimistic there would be many pastries left. Maybe I should play the lottery, because luckily there was no line and a pretty good selection of pastries left. The staff were super friendly and there were so many unique flavors of baked goods. We decided to split several and opted for the blueberry cloud cookie, chai cinnamon roll, banana pudding croissant, espresso cornflake cookie, and potato focaccia. The shop was more of a small take-out operation, so we took the pastries to a nearby park to eat. Everything was absolutely divine! The group favorite was the focaccia- the creamy potatoes and cheese brought a rich flavor that was perfectly balanced by the fluffy bread. The chai roll was perfectly soft and delicately spiced, completed with that soft cream cheese frosting and gooey center we all like to see. My personal favorite was the banana pudding croissant- the dough was so crispy that I'm pretty sure others could hear the bite, and there was a generous amount of filling with fresh bananas and visible vanilla beans in the whipped cream. The espresso cookie was super soft- while I couldn't taste the espresso very clearly, I absolutely *loved* the caramel-coated cornflakes topped with sea salt. Super unique and would definitely order again. Despite their decadent appearances, none of the pastries were too sweet. Already plotting a return visit and can't recommend this shop enough!
