The main reason I gave this four stars is because it's all you can eat. It's pretty good sushi and they have a couple neat twists on some rolls. I always like that and I usually order at least one "special roll" each place has. They are all included here so it feels better taking a chance on the Mexican roll or the Chicago special. Whatever roll they create or rename is great to try if its all in the price. The service was ok. Huge language barrier, but that sometimes means great sushi. This time it meant awkward looks as we asked questions about what types of sauce were on a roll or requested more tea. Back to the sushi. Pretty good and in my books worth every penny of the $18.99 for the all you can eat. I also liked that they made your rolls as you ordered, it wasn't like one huge buffet where the salmonella just waits to be discovered. Not a long wait clean table clean location, server, absolutely terrible, making the rest of the experience absolutely terrible, when I walk into a restaurant willingly spending money I want a GREAT experience, food was "decent" if server was more prompt and pleasant and didn't have a "I hate my job" look on him, would 100% give it a second shot considering I live in the area, to Owner or manager, great job training host and keeping place clean. Bleh. Similar to my opinion about Umi Sushi. I just can't copy and paste that review? The appeal here is the All You Can Eat lunch for $15.99. There is nothing appealing about it. Here's why: normally, 2 piece nigiri is $3+ each and rolls are $4+ - $10+. It comes down to quantity vs quality. I will always pick quality of food, especially when we're eating things raw! The cuts of fish are too thin and short so the individual pieces are mostly rice balls. My last piece, I left the small ball of rice and just ate the fish. The server said by leaving it, I'd be charged extra; so, my boyfriend finished it. I can't even discuss the rest of their menu because it's simplicity complicated. For instance, appetizer dishes called calamari tempera and jalapeño poppers are not Japanese. Fantastic spot! I am constantly hearing stories about how fantastic the place is and all that stuff. So, I met up with an old co worker friend from the airport and we decided to check it out. It was also byob. I ran next door to the liquor store and grabbed some revolution brewing beer and got to work on some sushi. I absolutely loved it and ate til my stomach couldn't take anymore. I wonder if these individuals truly know what really delectable Sushi should be in terms of taste, what quality and freshness is really all about when it comes to exceptional Sushi. I am rating Umami Sushi with 3-stars because they have a BYOB policy, but the service is dreadful. The deep sea, crunchy shrimp, and sapporo rolls were my favorites. My husband really enjoyed the spicy salmon. The sushi here is just A-OK. I am glad we came here for dinner and tried it, but I don't plan to return. You will wait and wait and wait to get your first rolls. Want to order more rolls? You better place your entire order as soon as the server takes your order. Nothing really stood out for us. The sushi rolls were very typical -- nothing unique or outstanding -- the usual boring sushi rolls that we have had time and time again. We have eaten at over 50 sushi restaurant (including some in Japan). As a sushi foodie and sushi snob, I know exceptional sushi when I taste it and this was very, very average sushi. My husband and I came in recently for all you can eat at around 3pm. It was our first time there, and as soon as we walked in, we could tell it was going to be a good experience. Our server was very friendly, helpful, and patient. He always had a smile on his face, was ready to answer any questions we had, and was very accommodating - making sure we had all we needed and took away what dishes we didn't. The kitchen staff was also very friendly and had a pleasant demeanor. It seems Umami has gathered some nice staff. Together, before tip, our bill amounted to $35. We both enjoy maki rolls and mostly cooked sushi, so I can't comment on the sashimi here. We ordered miso soup, gyoza, yakitori, Japanese fried chicken for starters and for the sushi, we had the spider roll, california roll, and chicken teriyaki roll. The miso soup was good, with seaweed and small bits of tofu. It was quite tasty and a nice start. The gyoza were also good, clearly fresh, and ever so slightly browned to lend a bit of flavor. I normally like them a little darker, but these were good - we even ordered a second plate of them! The sauce also complemented them nicely. The yakitori were presented well (very cute!) and tasted great. The sauce on it was delicious too! My husband really enjoyed the Japanese fried chicken. I am not a big fan of breaded chicken, but he likes that sort of thing and appreciated Umami's take. It came with what he described a barbecue-type sauce (which he liked). As for the sushi, the spider roll was amazing. I try to order it at every sushi restaurant I visit, and this was one of the best, maybe even THE best. If you like crab tempura, definitely give this one a try. The california roll was about what we expected, but you could tell the ingredients were very fresh. The avocado especially tasted fresh (I love avocado, and if you do too, you can tell if it's been sitting out). The teriyaki chicken roll was a sort of strange pick of my husband's, but it turned out to be a very tasty surprise! If we hadn't been stuffed already, we might have gotten another one of those. :) We didn't splurge on drinks, but I noticed they had "Japanese soda" on the menu, and I definitely would want to try that. Both of us lamented that they didn't have any bubble/pearl teas. We tend to each get one whenever we have Japanese, so that's an easy $10 they could have made on us if they had tapioca pearls and a blender! :) For dessert, they had mochi available, but we were too full to even consider dessert. The venue itself is charming. It is a corner of a strip mall across from a nice condo complex on Cumberland. There are several little boutique shops side-by-side, such as a bakery and a Polish pierogi place. I could definitely see coming to Umami for lunch or dinner and stopping by for some cookies, pastries, or pierogi to take home. The location of the restaurant itself used to be a Blockbuster video, and I was amazed at what the owners did with the place. When you first walk in, the foyer is really spacious and feels kind of refreshing. Inside the restaurant, we didn't even have to wait a minute, as our server was very attentive and greeted/took us right away. There were a very few patrons there, maybe one or two other tables during the course of our meal, but it was about 3 p.m. on a weekday, so likely their off-time. We were seated in a lovely, private booth. The decor was very earthy, lots of dark wood colors that contrasted well with the huge open window space that let so much light in. It gave me a sense of calm, personally. The one thing I would maybe suggest is that the entrance to the kitchen was behind a room divider and a fabric curtain, which could easily be a long-type noren instead. I've seen some restaurants do this - they take a noren (a type of sectioned, decorative curtain usually used in ramen shops) and use it for their kitchen entrance. It still provides a bit of privacy for the back, while being very light, airy, functional, and of course decorative. It might be comfortable than the room divider and (what looked like) heavy fabric drape/curtain. If the owner reads this, you should compliment your server(s) and chef because they were wonderful to us! As for us, the service, food, price, and location was top-notch, so we will definitely be coming back. It is closer and nicer than Sushi Para (which was our go-to all-you-can-eat sushi place). With the all you can eat price tag (plus BYOB), Mr. didn't feel guilty ordering 7 (yes, 7.) rolls for himself. I, on the other hand had 2 and had to force myself to either eat the third I ordered or pay the additional fee to take it home it with me. So, if you're an average sized woman with an average sized appetite, I wouldn't go out of my way unless you're with your husband who is a Marine built like He-Man. In that case, go for it. My co-workers and I used to be big fans of this place until a recent visit changed all that. We went for lunch on a Tuesday and it was unusually busy for that time of the week. There were only two waiters taking care of all the customers so service was very slow. It took them nearly ten minutes to bring us water and after my co-worker complained that he glass was empty it took another 20 to get her a clean cup of water. In addition it took over 30 minutes to bring out our appetizers and about another 10-15 minutes to get our sushi. The icing on the cake was when we caught our waiter picking his nose in the back corner and made no gesture to suggest that he washed his hand after finding his gold. We were there for over an hour, long past my lunch break ended. Luckily my boss was there suffering with us so that wasn't an issue but something for them to think about. I'm Filipino and I've eaten at many Asian restaurants in my life so I know that service is usually lackluster at these establishments. But at this level of ineptitude I don't think they'll be seeing us there ever again. Which is a shame because before that incident this was definitely a good bang-for-your-buck all you can eat sushi place that served some surprisingly good variety of appetizers along with the good sushi. You can choose items ala carte from the menu but you might as well spend the $19 (dinner price) on the buffet and get just about every item you want. It includes various rolls, sashimi, and appetizers. Unlimited gyoza is always a win in my book! If you do the buffet, there is a little paper menu where you write down how many orders of each item you want. The server picks the sheets up, brings them to the chefs, and in a short wait later you'll get a plate full of the food you ordered. Keep filling those sheets out until you're stuffed silly! **Updated Review** Umami has the highest quality all-you-can-eat sushi I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot. While some places limit their menus to leave out expensive fish like tuna, super white tuna, etc. or maybe only allow basic rolls, Umami gives you full reign to order anything you want from their huge list of loaded specialty rolls and all types of fish from tuna, salmon, red snapper, to eel, squid, and octopus. There's no limit to the amount you can order, you just better make sure you finish it. My friends and I always come with the intent of eating at least double our money's worth and I think we've done will with as many as 27 rolls ordered between a group of 5. They have boats to make the presentation wonderful when you order a literal boat-load of sushi. There are great appetizers that we always try and limit just to save stomach space for MORE SUSHI! Another great perk is that it's byob with no stupid corking fee or anything, so when you see that the price is $20 for all-you-can-eat, that's what you pay (plus tax and a generous tip of course!). The only real issue, and it can be a big issue some days, is the wait. We've waited over an hour to get in some times. That said, they'll take your number once you arrive and check in so that you can wait in the car, or stop by another close shop. Last time we were there, we were told an hour wait so we went and sat in the car and 20 minutes later we were called to sit. Friendly staff, did I mention all you can eat sushi? I just destroyed 12 Unagi, 8 Tuna, 8 Salmon, 1 eel roll, 1 spicy crab roll, I salmon skin roll, 1 Atlantic roll and 1 umami roll in 15 minutes!!!!!!
