First I must admit I haven't been to Umberto's of Manhasset in about 1 year. The quality, ambiance and friendly welcoming atmosphere went from stellar under big Mike's management to intoleralble soon after he left. My daughter and I used to go all the time. The staff made a point of knowing our names and greeting us warmly everytime we walked in. There was always Italian songs playing, the place was very clean, even the bathroom, wait staff always checked on you without being intrusive, most all the food was very good. I am pretty critical, especially of Italian food. Mike even made a special pie for us after I described what I liked. It was fantastic especially after Mike put his special finishing touch to it. I never had better before or since. That all changed after Mike left. We went 3 times and could not bring ourselves to go back again. Sad. However a new Umberto's has just opened, 1/24/2023, in Glen Cove right behind Covac Vacuums on Glen St across from St. Pats. They were very busy. I got a pie to go. It was very good. Not as good as Mike's... yet. I will have to get to know them and see if they can or will go the extra mile like Mike. I hope so because they are close to home and I would love to have a place to go to that has the quality that Mike created in Umberto's of Manhasset when he opened that restaurant. read more

We went in for an early dinner (4pm) before going across the street to see a movie. We do this often. Our waiter came over and we asked for ice water while we looked at the menu. We got water but no ice and no straws. Then we had to wave down our waiter so we could place our ordered. The place was empty. We ordered a large Caesar salad to share. My husband ordered the chicken vodka parmigiana plate with penne. I ordered a pasta dish. Mine was hot but my husband's was not hot at all. He never sends his food back so he ate it the way it was. His penne came with marinara sauce not the vodka sauce so we waved for the waiter to come over again. We asked how come the penne didn't have vodka sauce since he ordered the chicken vodka parmigiana not the regular chicken parmigiana. He said we would have had to request that. We've ordered this dish many times in the past and never had to request the vodka sauce. But what made it worse was that he didn't even offer to change it. We also had to ask for a basket of bread and not once did anyone come over to ask if we wanted a water refill. The place was empty so no excuse for the poor service. Only 2 tables were occupied and we were one of them. And they were quick to give us our bill. Cleared the table, we blinked and the bill was handed to us. We've been to Umberto's in Manhasset many times but was extremely unhappy this time. Gino's is a few doors down from Umberto's. We will most likely give them a try next time. read more

Yummy food with plenty of options. The Grandma pie is my absolute favorite-- it's SO good. We also like to get the buffalo chicken pizza which is delicious. The buffalo chicken pizza is definetly on the heavier side, but still satisfies the craving. The only pasta dish I've tried from here is the vodka chicken parmesan which came with 2 large pieces of breaded chicken making it easily shareable. Nice & simple decor. Unfortunately the service was not great. Ordered for 4 people and they forgot 1 of the orders and it took forever to come. By the time the other 3 people were done eating, my chicken parm hero finally came. The pizza was too salty for our liking. The Fettucine alfredo was good but we've had better somewhere else. Btw, we never got bread when they sat us down. What got annoying was it took a long time for us to get our bill. The waiter was not too attentive and we tried to get his attention a few times. Food was decent but our server was incredibly unfriendly and rude. They had a special of burrata with "balsamic caviar" with no price listed. My father asked our waiter if he could tell us what balsamic caviar was and he simply replied "you don't know what caviar is?" We had received our starters before getting any drinks to the table and had to ask for them. Small interactions with our waiter throughout our dining experience made us feel not welcomed. Sitting here now, for a Monday afternoon lunch. About 15 minutes after sitting someone asked us what we wanted to eat. No one ever came to us for a drink order. Odd. We are fine with water, and at this point I'll save my money and skip a drink. At 30 minutes one sandwich came out, and the waiter was surprised we thought the appetizer mozz sticks would have come out already? Still waiting on my side salad, and my daughters entire lunch.... oh yeah, and the mozz sticks .. 2/26/20: another lunch visit. Again sandwich before everyone else's food. I didn't send it back this time, just waited for colleagues to receive their food. Caesar salad take 2, no change from first experience. Pizza and pasta is so good. My lesson learned. I actually love the food here and have spent a lot of money at this establishment. But last time I went, two guys behind the counter were NOT wearing masks and preparing food. We had the baked ziti and the fresh pappardelle pasta with crumbled sausage. Really delicious. We were pretty hungry and So excited to get our food I didn't get to even take a picture of the pasta. Great place for all the pizza lovers out there! There are tons of different flavors to pick from, plenty of seating, and quick service. The buffalo chicken pizza is my favorite. The chicken chunks are tender and sauce has quite a kick to it! Definitely more flavorful than other pizzas I've had before. The white pizza is also delicious! I'm a big ricotta cheese person so I appreciated how generous they were with the ricotta. The pizzas had plenty of sauce and cheese but surprisingly they weren't overly greasy. The sandwiches are also amazing, especially the prosciutto and mozzarella cheese one. When heated, the prosciutto becomes slightly crunch and the flavor permeates the whole sandwich, making every single bite rich and creamy. The vodka pizza was just okay though. It didn't quite have enough sauce on it and the crust was slightly too crunchy for my taste. Will definitely be back to get more pizza from Umberto's. read more

Sorry, it's a major nope. The wait staff is busy and very good given the hustle they must endure. No problems with the waitstaff. Pizza: order a slice and it's old and reheated House tossed salad: good! Then it goes downhill quickly. Fried calamari was absolutely horrible. Limp, not a crisp or a crunch to be had. It's obvious they don't know how to fry calamari, and as easy as that is, it's clear that no one ever taught the kitchen staff how to do it. First problem is they don't get their fry oil hot enough. That would solve 1/2 the problem. But it's also clear that they don't know about adding a touch of corn starch or baking powder to the flour dredge as a crisping agent. Even if that had, though, oil that is not up to temperature will always produce a limp, oily fry. It does, and at Umberto's it did. Nice, cold Peroni Beer on tap served in a tall Pilsner glass. That was so good that it almost made me forget about the inedible calamari. The pizza problem is easily solved though-- Simple: don't sell old slices to tables. Don't sell them to walk-ins and take outs either, but for goodness sake, don't sell them to the patrons who are ordering off the menu at tables. So, even though Pasquale, the very good waiter with the accommodating demeanor was very good, I can think of no reasons to return. Wish I could be more positive. We in the Metro area are aware of what the moniker "Umberto's" has conjured up for many years, this particular permutation of the famous restaurant misses the mark. read more

We usually like Umberto's. Service is usually decent and the food is pretty good. However! Last Monday, we went to dinner and the service was not that great. Our server was a bit rude and curt. We ordered the capellini with prosciutto and took 1/3 of it home. Two days after that, I was enjoying the leftover capellini when I felt a sharp object in my mouth. I spat out what was in my mouth to discover a type of metal wire in my food. It was the length of an extended staple and was sharp indeed. I was grateful I did not consume it or that it cut the inside of my mouth. Umberto's, please make sure you take better care of your hygiene in the kitchen. Also, your waitstaff could be friendlier. Best pizza in LI. Perfect sauce (it's the real deal!) and cheese on a great crust . The grandmas slices and the cappuccino are my favorite, and the tortellini in brodo is fantastic when under the weather. We always bring our toddler and they're sweet with kids. With brick oven pizza, the crust can be too "done" at times. This only happened once here, and when I called back about my order, they took care of the situation immediately. Being from out of town, we were in search of a couple of great pieces of NY style pizza. Umberto's did not disappoint. We each had a slice of the Bianca and Vodka. Both were delicious. The Bianca was creamy and cheesy while the Vodka had just enough tomato flavor and then the creamy authentic Vodka sauce flavor. We enjoyed our lunch so much in fact, we are ordering two whole pies to go before our business meeting to put in the car with us for the trip home. Very disappointed. I placed an order for delivery and when I received it, one of the items was wrong. I called them and let them know I had asked for Mozzarella, not Marsala sauce on my hero. He was somewhat apologetic, but backhandedly placed the blame on me saying "that's why I repeated the order" followed by "of course this is my last call". Ultimately he apologized and offered to send a replacement hero (grilled chicken, broccoli raabe with mozzarella- really nothing too complex) While waiting for the hero to be re-delivered, my family opened the Buffalo wings, came with a side of Italian dressing instead of blue cheese. Mistake, but I didn't say anything. Forty-five minutes later the hero still didn't come. I called back, was met with will be there in 2 minutes. It was. Except after all that, it was wrong again, still no mozzarella. I called back to let them know that the order was wrong again, after 45 mins. Instead of an offer of a credit or refund, I was met with "he misunderstood you, people make mistakes". Yes, you're right people do make mistakes, but twice?!? On the same order?! If he misheard me the first time I could understand, but after I made it clear the second time I had requested Mozzarella, not sure how you could mess that up again. I didn't even mention the Italian dressing with the wings. Bottom line, as a long time Manhasset resident who frequently orders from here, I cannot say my family will be back. I NEVER, ever post on here but this is so beyond my comprehension I had to share: Today is my 9th day of being bedridden in the hospital eating hospital food so I needed to change it up.. called Umberto's of Manhasset and ordered a cauliflower crust personal pizza for myself and a Grandma pie for the hospital staff on my floor. The delivery guy called me when he got here and said he'd bring it up. Never brought it up. Then security called to say 'the pizza wasn't paid for so I called Umberto's of Manhasset and asked the girl who took my order and credit card, "why is delivery guy telling security that he needs to be paid? One of the nurses said she go down so I gave her $10 to tip the delivery guy. She comes back with the Grandma pie [which was ice cold] and the $10 tip stating the delivery guy left so she couldn't tip him. I call Umberto's of Manhasset for the 3rd time to make her aware the personal cauliflower crust was not delivered. She puts me on hold because she's trying to contact the driver. After 10 minutes of being on hold I suggested she just credit my credit card for the cauliflower crust. She puts me on hold again! Someone else picks up my call and tells me in the snottiest most obnoxious tone [your parents should be so ashamed of you] that they will not be crediting the personal cauliflower pie! I asked to speak with the owner and she hangs up on me! Not only am I appalled by the rude and lacking of customer service, [shame on Umberto's employees] but after telling them of my accident and injuries sustained and that I'd be here another 3 weeks they showed no compassion, no empathy, no respect whatsover and had the gall to treat me like a POS customer. rigatoni bolognese now changed recipe. after years of enjoying pieces of meat and true bolognese sauce. the dish is now tiny pieces of ground beef salty bright red tomato sauce, the peas & mushroom are still in the dish and very small amount of tiny slivers prosciutto. umbertos mgr claims it has not changed and barely acknowledged me. very poor customer service/appreciation. Ordering to pick-up or delivery is always GREAT! The 2 time I dined there ... well, it's not so great. One waitress told my friend she is not allowed to change her order while we were still in the process of putting in the order for the rest of the table. Another time... we were rushed out. They don't give spoons and run out of bowls... I went with different groups each time so it's kind of weird... The food is great.
